PREVIEW COACHING STAFF MEET THE UTES

“This will also be our first year hosting games on the Pac-12 Networks and we are excited to showcase our new home,” Hogue said. “We are hoping our new facility, and another successful home conference season, will help with new recruiting opportunities. Visibility for our program is critical for recruiting.”

“Last year’s home record in the Pac-12 was certainly an improvement,” Hogue said. “We hope to make another jump this year.”

The Utes welcome back six returning starters, but will boast a diverse corps of leaders to compensate for the loss of four accomplished athletes, three who served as the captains of last year’s team. “’Cheese’, Kate, ‘Tay’ and Trina (Chalese Hadley, Kate Dickman, Taylor Jordan and Trina Gomez) will split captain duties this season,” Hogue said. “This is the first time that we have ever had the votes completely split four ways. All four of these young ladies bring something valuable to this group and they will do a great job as our leaders.”

“Taylor is ready to play either corner,” Hogue said. “She knows the game and can step in at any time. Plus, she looks as good as I’ve ever seen her offensively. She’s playing the game like a senior and thinks like a coach.” Freshman Hannah Flippen is the front runner to assume everyday duties at second-base for the Utes. She was a career .441 hitter with 181 hits, 143 runs and 68 RBI as she helped Bonita Vista win the CIF title last season and was finalists in 2011 and 2013. “Hannah will be our starting second baseman, replacing Sweet,” Hogue said. “She received votes for captain as a freshman, which gives you an idea as to why we think she will be able to step right in and be an everyday player. She’s going to be an exciting player to watch.” Two more freshmen will be seeing time at shortstop this season. Freshman Anissa Urtez hit .541 with a .788 slugging percentage on 46 hits for 24 RBI to go with 34 runs scored and 10 stolen bases at Downey High School in Long Beach, Calif., to earn a spot on the 2013 Press-Telegram Dream Team as well as a first-team all-league selection. “Anissa had a fantastic fall season at shortstop,” Hogue said. “She can probably play any spot on the field, but we have given her a lot of time at short, and she has led the way.” Versatile freshman Bridget Castro led Calvary Chapel High School to the CIF title in 2011 and

“’Cheese’ is once again starting the season as our center fielder,” Hogue said. “She’s a team captain and takes charge in the outfield. She’s a gamer. She plays the game with passion and absolutely loves to compete and loves to win.” Junior right-fielder Marissa Mendenhall tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with 13 doubles last season. She also tied for seventh in the Pac-12 with a team-high three sacrifice flies and tied for fourth in the league-only stats. “’Bug’ is slated to start in right field again,” Hogue said. “After coming to us with experience as a catcher and a third baseman, she has now played the outfield long enough to call it her home. She will continue to be someone whom we look to for a high number of RBI’s and still loves to be up to bat when the game is on the line.” Gomez was one of eight Pac-12 players to boast a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage last season and she hit .308 at the plate with a .400 on-base percentage. Gomez, a Riverton, Utah native, tied the Pac-12 single-game high with three steals during second game of doubleheader at Southern Utah (4/24) and also had a hit and scored three times against the Thunderbirds. “Trina is valuable option for us in the outfield and can also be used as a pinch runner,” Hogue said. “She is one of those players who I would have loved to have for four years instead of two. Every single area of her game has gotten better since she got here, and she was really talented to begin with.”

“Pacheco had a great freshman season,” Hogue said. “Just having her back there keeps the double play in order. We don’t face a lot of teams who are willing to even attempt to steal off her. This fall, Pacheco was our best hitter from start to finish. I believe she thinks of herself as a solid defensive player, but her bat was so hot this preseason that I think she may start to consider herself a real offensive threat.” Junior Shelbi Everett will bring a wealth of versatility to the Utes.

Mariah Ramirez finished 10th in the Pac-12 with 152.2 innings pitched in 2013 and had an impact at the plate as well. Ramirez went 6-for-10 at the plate to help Utah to series victory over No. 2 Arizona State (4/19-4/21/13).

“Everett can do a little bit of everything,” Hogue said. “She is ready to step in as a catcher or as an outfielder right out of the gates. She has been fun to coach because she just reminds you that it’s a game and it should be fun and you should play loose. We even put her at first a few times, and the game just seems pretty easy for her.”

“She is swinging the bat well right now,” Hogue said. “She’s matured as a hitter over her last two years. She’s more selective and if that continues into the season, her offensive game will completely change. It’s exciting to consider her not just as a pitcher, but to play multiple roles for us this year. She’s even played several innings at first base.”

Bella Secaira helped Marina High School win a Sunset League title and was the 2011 Daily Pilot Player of the Year after hitting .450 with 28 RBI. She earned first-team All-Sunset League status in both 2010 and 2011. “Bella is like another coach on the field,” Hogue said. “She knows this game really well, so there really wasn’t much of a learning curve for her when she got here. She’s been great for our pitchers because she coaches them pitch to pitch in the workouts. That’s something you rarely see in a freshman.”

Sammy Cordova enjoyed an impressive prep career at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., as she was named Orange County Player of the Year in 2012, Pitcher of the Year in the Sunset League last season and to the MaxPreps All-American team and ESPNHS All-State First Team as well as a MaxPreps NFCA Player of the Week. “Sammy is a freshman who has a lot of movement and mixes speeds well. She’s done nothing but improve since she’s been on campus. We will continue to help her gain confidence by giving her some comfortable innings early when we have a lead. She’ll play a role as a closer for a while until we see what she can do. Hopefully, she’ll earn some starts quickly.” Junior Kendal Bergman will provide a fourth pitching option for the Utes in 2014. “Berg picked up a ball and threw it underhand for the first time at the end of last year,” Hogue said. “She’s been throwing to hitters and getting ready to back up the other three pitchers. She will also continue to have pinch hit and DP opportunities.”

Coming off an injury during her senior season at Snow Canyon High School, incoming freshman Autumn Shipp joins the Utah program after picking up Deseret News Second-Team All-State honors in 2012 and honorable mention status in 2011.

TEAM INFO.

“Our focus this year has been exclusively on us,” Hogue said. “We haven’t even looked at the opponents that we have on the schedule. We’re just trying to keep the focus on who we are and what we do each and every day.”

Jordan will compete for innings at both corner positions in the Ute infield after earning Pac-12 AllAcademic Second Team honors in 2013.

Hadley returns to anchor the Ute outfield in center after tying for the Pac-12 lead with six triples in all games and three during league games. The South Jordan, Utah native tied for fourth in Pac-12 in sacrifice flies and ninth with 27 hits in the Pac-12’s conference-only stats.

“Kayce is pitching without pain for the first time in a long time,” Hogue said. “She had hip surgery in May. She looks great and feels great. I can’t wait to see what this kid can do with a body that doesn’t fight her. She isn’t a freshman anymore so she’ll have a sense of what to expect this go around.”

Catchers Sophomore Shelby Pacheco comes back behind the plate for the Utes after an impressive debut campaign in 2013. She started 49 games and was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention last year after tying for sixth in the Pac-12 in triples and sacrifice flies during league games.

PREVIEW

An exciting schedule is in front of Utah in 2014 as the Utes take on a schedule that includes 30 games against 14 opponents who qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but Hogue said the Utes will simplify their outlook heading into the new campaign.

“Kate spent the majority of this preseason transitioning from an outfielder into an infielder,” Hogue said. “That’s an uncommon move at this level of softball, but she is very athletic and has done a really nice job. I’m most excited to see how she can help this team win games with her bat. She is swinging it great.”

Outfield

COACHING STAFF

Utah held a 6-6 mark in league home games last season thanks to series victories over No. 15 UCLA and No. 2 Arizona State in Utah Softball Stadium.

Dickman, a second-team All-Pac-12 selection as a left fielder in 2013, will be a utility player, seeing time in left field as well as first base. Dickman led the Pac-12 with 15 doubles, tied for fifth in Pac-12 with four triples, finished 10th in the Pac-12 during league play with a .361 batting average.

“Bridget has taken reps in every infield position since she got here in August,” Hogue said. “She’s a really dangerous hitter, and is versatile enough to use as a utility player. We plan to give her a lot of at bats this year because she has proven in the preseason that she can help us win games with one swing.”

Pitchers

Utah will have four arms at its disposal on its pitching staff in 2014 as sophomore Kayce Nieto, returns after earning Pac-12 Honorable Mention as well as a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2013.

Nine Utah softball home games, 11 overall, will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks, beginning Mar. 20 against BYU. League games against Oregon State (Apr. 4-6), Stanford (Apr. 17-18) and California (May 1-3) will be aired live from Salt Lake City. A pair of Utah’s games at Arizona State (Apr. 10-11) will also be televised.

“’Stewy’ (Stewart) has been slated at third base again,” Hogue said. “She had an impressive freshman season, and she made only two errors the entire year. In the position she played, and in the conference we’re in, that’s certainly worth bragging about.”

league title in 2010. She enjoyed a decorated prep career as she was named 2011 CIF Player of the Year.

TRADITION

“This will be our third year in the Pac-12 and only our second year in our new stadium,” seventh-year head coach Amy Hogue said. “All of our Pac-12 opponents who we’ll face at home this year haven’t been to our new stadium (Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and California). We had success last year at home beating every Pac-12 team that travelled here. We’re excited to host the other four Pac-12 teams who haven’t been to our new facility.”

Infield

Sophomore Kristen Stewart was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team Honorable Mention pick in 2013 after hitting .393 at home against Pac-12 opponents with a .571 slugging percentage on three extra-base hits (two doubles and one home run).

Assistant Coach • Third Season

Head Coach • Seventh Season • Utah, 1994 In 14 seasons with the University of Utah softball team either as a player, assistant coach or head coach, Amy Hogue continues to build Utah into a competitor in the best softball league in the nation, the Pac-12. In six seasons as the Utes’ head coach, the sixth coach in program history, Hogue has a 157-167-1 (.483) record at Utah and sports a 354-249-1 (.586) overall record in 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, which includes six seasons at the NJCAA’s Salt Lake Community College. Under Hogue’s guidance, Utah ended its 2013 season with a 6-6 mark in Pac-12 games during its inaugural season in Utah Softball Stadium, including series victories against No. 15/T-15 UCLA and No. 2/3 Arizona State. The Utes hit .309 in league home contests and outslugged their Pac-12 opponents (.508 to .467) at home, while on-base percentage was equal at .380. Three Utes hit over .350 in the 12 conference home games. Utah won seven conference games last season, compared to two victories in 2012.

On an individual basis, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA First-Team All-Region award in 2008, while Tia Palauni and Whitney Holm have been named to the second team each of the last two seasons. Ute players have earned 16 different all-conference awards since 2008. Six Utes were named to Pac-12 All-Conference Teams in Utah’s inaugural season in the Pac-12 in 2012, including Holm, Palauni, Generra Nielson, Katelyn Elliott and Kelsi Hoopiiaina on the Honorable Mention squad, while Kate Dickman received Honorable Mention status on the All-Freshmen Team. Nielson posted one of the best single-season performances on the mound in school history in 2012. She led the Pac-12 and was 10th in the NCAA with a school singleseason record 294 strikeouts in 2012. She was also third in the league with 237.0 innings in the circle and finished fourth with 21 wins. At the plate, Kara Foster became Utah’s all-time career home run leader as she hit 64 career round-trippers and is second on the school’s all-time list with 165 career RBI.

Prior to moving to SLCC, Hogue was an assistant coach at Utah from 199699 where she was involved in all facets of running the program. Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah’s graduate assistant coach from 1994-95. From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from 1994-96. Hogue also coached an accelerated travel team, called The Sting. She guided her club squad to a .725 winning percentage. In her last two seasons, The Sting racked up 137 wins. Hogue’s playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. From 199194, Hogue helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women’s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins. She earned second- team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit .455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school’s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series.

Thomson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Copper Hills High School, in 1996, and served as an assistant at Southern Utah University in 1998. Before joining the Utes coaching staff, Thomson taught pitching lessons in the Salt Lake Community and surrounding areas since 2002. Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has four children: Mikaela (14), Chase (11), Cayden (8) and Quinley (2).

Livreri was previously an assistant coach at UNLV from 2009-11 after spending the 2007 and `08 campaigns as a volunteer assistant coach. The Rebels went 153-126 (.548) with Livreri on the bench, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. The Las Vegas native started her collegiate playing career at Colorado State University-Pueblo before transferring to UNLV for the 2005 and ‘06 seasons. Despite only playing her junior and senior seasons with the Rebels, Livreri made a significant impact on the program. She finished ninth in the school record books in career RBI (75) and eighth in career walks (60). In UNLV’s single-season record book, Livreri is fourth in walks with 31 in 2006, eighth in doubles with 12 in 2006, eighth in RBI with 38 in 2006 and tied for 10th in most games played with 63 in 2005. Livreri was selected to the Mountain West Conference’s AllTournament and All-Conference Teams in 2005. She played one season in the Italian Professional League for Nuoro after completing her intercollegiate playing career. Livreri earned a bachelor’s degree from UNLV in University Studies in 2006 and obtained her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership in 2008.

TEAM INFO.

In 2011, Utah headed into the final weekend of the regular season with a shot at a Mountain West Conference crown heading into the final weekend of the season. During her first season in 2008, the Utes were picked to finish last in the MWC, but battled for first place until the final two games of the season before taking third.

Before taking over the helm at Utah, Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College’s softball team from 1999-2004, instantly creating a successful program. She went 197-82 (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in 2004. SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins’ inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in 2003. At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003. With the Bruins, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003.

A former USA Softball Men’s National Team pitcher, Thomson played for the national team 2004 - 2009. 2007 he helped the national team finish second at the ISF Men’s World Cup in Prague, posting a 2-0 record from the circle with 18 strikeouts. He was named Best Pitcher at the NAFA World Series in 2006. A four-time ASA All-American, Thomson helped the Salt Lake Miners finish second at the ASA Men’s 23-under National Championship twice.

Maggie Livreri is entering her third season on the University of Utah softball coaching staff in 2014. Livreri will work with Utah’s outfielders, catchers and hitters.

PREVIEW

Utah put up a 26-6 non-conference record in 2012, which included a 12-game win streak and a win at No. 24 New Mexico. Generra Nielson became the first Ute softball student-athlete to ever receive weekly recognition as she was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 19, 2012 after throwing a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against Colgate. The no-hitter was the second of her Utah career, and the 25th in school history. She also tied her career high with 16 strikeouts and did not issue a walk to a single Raider hitter and struck out eight of the first nine hitters she faced. Nielson’s other no-hitter at Utah came in a home game against Idaho State on Apr. 1, 2011.

Hogue’s players have also been successful off the field as well. Three Utes were named to the Pac-12 Softball All-Academic Team in 2012 in addition to a total of 28 All-Academic awards received through five seasons in the Mountain West Conference from 2007-11. Also last May, Kendall Bergman earned the Outstanding Freshman Academic Achievement Award from the Mining Engineering Department.

Cody Thomson enters his fifth season as a full-time assistant on the Ute coaching staff. Thomson served as a volunteer assistant coach for Utah since 2004, working primarily with the Ute pitchers.

COACHING STAFF

Second baseman Jackie Sweet was named to both the Pac-12 and NFCA Pacific Region Second Teams and became the first-ever Ute to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Apr. 8, 2013. Sweet helped Utah pick up its first-ever series victory over a Pac-12 foe after winning the final two games against No. 15/T-15 UCLA Apr. 6-7 in Salt Lake City. The Utes also faced No. 9/10 Oregon in a mid-week three-game set in Eugene on Apr. 2-3. Sweet turned in a .550 batting average in the six games, which included two doubles, a triple and home run for a .900 slugging percentage, on 11 hits in 20 at-bats for five RBI. She also turned in a .571 on-base percentage in addition to a stolen base.

Ute softball players have received the Occie Evans Award, the University of Utah’s top senior female athlete in a team sport during two of the last three years. Sweet won it most recently in 2013 and Nielson was recognized in 2012. Hogue won the award herself in 1994.

Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the June 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine ranked Salt Lake City the third-best big city for jobs and fourth-best city for tech jobs in May 2012. The magazine also recognized Utah as the “Best State for Business and Careers” for the second straight year in 2011. Men’s Fitness magazine named Salt Lake the “Fittest City in the Nation” in 2009. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial and communications hub of the Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey and rated as one of the top 10 most socially networked cities in America. Salt Lake is also home to worldrenowned medical and technology industries.

MEET THE UTES

Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball), Utah Blaze (Arena Football) and Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).
