SEASON OUTLOOK Last year, the story of the Utah baseball team was youth. This season, those freshmen all have a year of experience under their belts. The Utes return 19 letterwinners from last year’s 21-31 team, including all but two starters in the field. Leading the way for Utah is junior pitcher Mitch Watrous, who was an honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection last year. “We are experienced this year,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “All the returning players are a year older, they’re a year stronger, and they’ve been through the grind of a Pac-12 season, with seven freshmen playing significant innings last year. I think we’re a more mature team. I think we’re better physically. But the experience factor is the important thing for me.” Key losses for the Utes include pitcher and first baseman Trey Nielsen, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. Outfielder Tyler Relf, a four-year starter and last year’s team batting average leader, and Joe Pond, who pitched in 64 games over four seasons, both graduated. Pitcher Brock Duke, who suffered a ligament injury early last season, will also be redshirting this year. INFIELD At first base, senior TJ Bennett returns for his second season. He started 40 games last year, mostly at first and third depending on injuries, hitting .232 with 20

RBI and tying for the team lead with three triples. This summer he was his league’s hitter of the year. Freshman Hunter Simmons, who was a first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League selection at Saint Francis High School, will also be in the mix at first. “We feel that TJ’s best position is first but he can move to third if we need him to,” Kinneberg said. “He’s got that strong leadership that is invaluable. Hunter will see time at both first base and designated hitter, and possibly in the outfield. He has really shown some progress this fall. We need him to get as many at-bats as we can. He’s a guy who will add a lot of power to our lineup in the future.” Kody Davis started 31 games at second base last year before struggling late in the season with injuries. He hit .273 with seven doubles and was tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with 14 stolen bases (14-of-15). “Kody makes us go, and when he was out of the lineup last year that really hurt us on both sides of the ball,” Kinneberg said. “He’s much stronger and his shoulder is fixed. I’m looking for him to be our leader out there on the field in some capacity.” Cody Scaggari and Cory Hunt will both be playing for a spot at shortstop. Scaggari, who struggled at the plate early last year as a freshman but saw continued improvement as the season went on, started 30 games and hit .240, going 6-of-9

Kody Davis was tied for sixth in the Pac-12 last season with 14 stolen bases.

in stolen bases. Hunt, who also saw significant time at second base last season after Davis was injured, finished second on the team with a .287 batting average including three triples (tied for the team lead), two home runs, and 18 RBI. “Shortstop is going to be a battle,” Kinneberg said. “Both Cody and Cory will probably see time at shortstop or second base.” At third base, Dallas Carroll was second on the team in batting average before suffering a broken foot at the end of March last season (although he returned for Utah’s final games of the year). He finished the year hitting .282 with seven stolen bases, 12 RBI and two triples. “I have so much confidence in Dallas defensively,” Kinneberg said. “That’s reassuring.” Utility junior infielder Biss Larsen hit .130 last year over 15 games (five starts). Biss can play first and third and is in the mix to start at designated hitter. “Biss had one of the best fall seasons of anyone we have,” Kinneberg said. “He can possibly earn a spot against left-handed pitching at first base. Biss adds important depth and versatility to our lineup.” OUTFIELD With the loss of Relf in right field, Wyler Smith will move from left to right as his replacement. Smith was third on the team last year with a .277 batting average. He had 12 RBI and two triples.

Mitch Watrous has been one of Utah’s top pitchers for the past three seasons.

SEASON OUTLOOK Braden Anderson, who was tied for third in the Pac-12 in stolen bases (16-of24), returns for his second year in center field. Anderson hit .275, was second on the team with 50 hits and was also second with a .387 on-base percentage. “Wyler is probably the most improved player that we have on the team,” Kinneberg said. “He really did a great job during the summer building up his body. With him and Braden in the outfield, they can cover a lot of ground with their speed and it will be comforting to our pitching staff.” In left field Tyler Yagi has started 114 games over three seasons, returning last year after a two-year break for an LDS mission. He hit .198 last year with 10 RBI. Freshman Josh Rose, who was an all-league selection at Granite Hills High School, will also see time in the outfield, while Simmons will also be in the mix. “Left field could rotate depending on the needs of our offense, whether it is left handed or right handed,” Kinneberg said. “Tyler Yagi is a senior who will be able to help us, as well as Josh Rose, who is left handed and is going to be a very good player here. Along with Simmons, they will compete for the left field spot.” Utility player Zach Jones played in seven games last year.

Dalton Carroll, who went 4-8 with a 3.89 ERA as the Saturday starter in 2013, is the only pitcher in the Pac-12 who did not allow a home run last year (min. one inning pitched per game). Carroll had 41 strikeouts and was second on the team in innings pitched (78 2/3). “Dalton and Tanner are a year older and stronger, so we feel like they’ve got a great chance to improve on the good years that they had last year,” Kinneberg said. Both sophomore Bret Helton and senior Zach Adams will be considered for the fourth starter spot. Adams has spent most of the past three seasons injured and has only played in seven games since the start of the 2011 season, but is healthy to start the year. Helton, who made four appearances on the mound last season in addition to playing in the outfield and at designated hitter, had eight strikeouts in four appearances, including pitching an inning of Utah’s shutout of USC. Adams could also play a role as a reliever. “Our fourth starter is up in the air,” Kinneberg said. “We’d love for Bret to come in and be able to fill that role because he’s a hitter as well, so he would pitch on Tuesday’s and be able to hit on the weekend, which would help us. The wild card of our staff is Zach Adams. He is healthy and throwing great, and we will see what role PITCHERS he develops into. He may be a late-inning “I felt last year pitching was the strength guy who comes in to help us win, or move of our team, and with most of them back into a starting role. That remains to be and a few additions, I think we’re stronger seen.” on the mound than we’ve ever been,” A solid group of relievers returns in Kinneberg said. “Mitch will be our Friday seniors Nick Green, Luke West and Josh night guy and we expect him to have a Chapman. Green pitched in a team-high great year. He’s worked extremely hard to 28 games and also led Utah with a 2.17 make a big year for himself, so his progress ERA. He had two saves with a 0-2 record, has been very good. We feel like he has a and held opponents to a .242 batting chance to really be an impact pitcher in average. West pitched 18 games and was the Pac-12.” often called on in long relief situations. He Watrous finished with a 4-4 record was second on the team with a 2.75 ERA, last year with a 2.81 ERA as Utah’s Friday going 4-2 with two saves. Chapman went starter. He also had a pair of saves after 3-2 with two saves and a 2.84 ERA in 19 starting the season as a reliever. He finappearances. He had 30 strikeouts. Also ished second on the team with 64 strikereturning is senior Ben Mordini, who has outs. Watrous started and earned the win pitched in 21 games over three years with in both of Utah’s shutouts last year, and 11 starts. tied the school record with 12 strikeouts Several newcomers also look to make an against Saint Mary’s. impact on the rotation. Freshman Dylan Tanner Banks, who started on Sunday’s Drachler was a first-team all-state seleclast year, went 2-5 with a 4.72 ERA. He tion at Spring Valley High School in Las walked just 12 batters all year to rank third Vegas. Hunter Rodriguez redshirted last in the Pac-12, and allowed just one home year as a freshman and earned a host of run all year. Banks had 31 strikeouts. accolades coming out of Deseret Vista

High School in Phoenix. Junior Nolan Stouder was an honorable mention allregion selection at the College of Southern Idaho. “Green and West absolutely saved us last year,” Kinneberg said. “They are back end bullpen guys who have each had a great fall and are ready to go again. Drachler is left handed and could be a matchup guy or work himself into the fourth starter role by the end of the year.” CATCHER Senior Konnor Armijo and sophomore A.J. Young, who shared time at the position last year, both return. Armijo hit .261 with nine doubles. He was tied for third in the Pac-12 in pickoffs (4) and ranked fourth in the conference in runners caught stealing (16). Young hit .211 in his debut season and tied for the team lead with three home runs. One of his three home runs came off 2013 first-round draft pick Mark Appel, one of just two players to homer off him last season. Freshman Max Schuman, who played at Arcadia High School in Arizona, tied for the state lead with 12 home runs in high school and will also see time at designated hitter. “A.J. and Konnor are both back and will do the majority of the catching depending on who is hot,” Kinneberg said. “We will decide who catches 3-4 games during the week. Max is the catcher of the future and we want to get him innings. He adds a left-handed power bat to our lineup and is progressing well after a good fall.”

Braden Anderson was tied for third last year in the Pac-12 in stolen bases.

The dedicated and personable Bill Kinneberg is in his 11th season at the helm of the University of Utah baseball team. He was named head coach of the program on Sept. 15, 2004, marking his second stint in the Utes’ dugout. Utah is entering its third season in the Pac-12. Kinneberg led Utah back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1960 in 2009, as the Utes won their first Mountain West Conference tournament with a 9-3 win over San Diego State in the championship game. Utah won two games at NCAA’s, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern in the Fullerton Regional. Several players have earned national honors under Kinneberg. C.J. Cron was a two-time firstteam All-American in 2010 and 2011, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, the two-time District Player of the Year and a two-time MWC Player of the Year. Ryan Khoury earned first-team AllAmerica honors in 2006, and was also District Player of the Year and MWC Player of the Year. Kinneberg has had four players drafted in the first 10 rounds out of Utah, including the Utes’ first-ever first-round selection in 2011, when Cron was the 17th overall pick. Stephen Fife was a third-round pick in 2008, while Rick Anton went in the eighth round in 2011. Most recently, Tyler Wagner was drafted in the fourth round in 2012. Kinneberg’s teams have rewritten the record books. Cron shattered the career batting average mark during his three seasons. Jay Brossman holds records for hits, doubles and total bases. Corey Shimada ranks first in the record books for triples, stolen bases, runs scored and walks. Tyler Wagner has a schoolrecord 17 career saves. In 18 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, Kinneberg has a record of 487-481. He earned his 400th career victory in the 2009 NCAA tournament with a win over Gonzaga. Kinneberg has coached collegiate baseball for 29 years. His teams established school records for victories in a season at UTEP in 1985, Wyoming in 1990 and Utah in 1996. During Kinneberg’s first stint as Utah’s head coach in 1996, he led the Utes to a 30-22 record. His squad tied for third place in the Western Athletic Conference’s Northern Division and three players earned all-WAC honors.

Kinneberg has also made his mark on the national scene. In 2010 he served as the head coach of the US National Team that won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships in Japan. Kinneberg has done several stints with USA Baseball. He served as the pitching coach in 2007 and 1999. The 2007 pitching staff turned in a 25-12 mark in international competition, and finished with a scant 1.93 earned-run average. Kinneberg also spent several years as director of the organization’s athlete development program. Prior to joining the Utah staff, Kinneberg worked for the Chicago White Sox organization as a minor league pitching coach. From 1996 through 2001, Kinneberg was the associate head coach at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats were 124-102 and advanced to an NCAA Regional during Kinneberg’s tenure. He served an assistant baseball coach at Arizona State from 1992 through 1994. During the 1993 and 1994 seasons, Kinneberg helped lead the Sun Devils to back-to-back appearances in the College World Series. Kinneberg was the head baseball coach at Wyoming from 1986 through 1992. While in charge of the Cowboys’ program, Kinneberg guided his team to the WAC playoffs in five of his seven seasons. In 1990, he earned WAC Coach of the Year honors, leading Wyoming to a 37-18 record. Kinneberg coached 16 All-WAC players while in Laramie. Kinneberg served as head coach at UTEP in 1985. Prior to that, he was an assistant at UTEP for four seasons. In addition to his duties with USA Baseball, Kinneberg worked with the Italian Olympic team in 1984, serving as pitching coach. Kinneberg is a 1980 graduate of Arizona. He played two years with the Wildcats, going 7-4 on the mound with seven saves, including an appearance in the 1979 College World Series. Kinneberg earned a master’s degree from UTEP in 1982. Kinneberg and his wife Janet reside in Sandy, Utah. They have two children, Joe (13) and David (11).

Pitching Coach 6th Season

Hitting Coach 7th Season

Mike Crawford is in his sixth year as the pitching coach at Utah. The Utes have consistently been towards the top of the league in several pitching categories. Last season Utah surrendered just 13 home runs to rank second in the league in fewest home runs allowed. The Utes tied for third in the Pac-12 in pickoffs in 2012. Utah led the conference in fewest hits, doubles and home runs allowed in 2011. In 2010, Utah led the conference in fewest walks, hits and home runs allowed. The team finished second in opposing batting average and saves, behind only College World Series participant TCU. Utah set a school record for strikeouts en route to winning the MWC Tournament in 2009. Last season, Mitch Watrous was tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in batters struck out looking. He was tied for fourth in the Pac-12 in fewest earned runs allowed and tied for second in fewest doubles allowed in 2012. Crawford has had four Utah pitchers drafted, most notably Tyler Wagner, who was a fourth-round pick to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012. Wagner set a school record with 17 saves during his career. Rick Anton was an eighth-round selection to the Dodgers in 2011 after leading the conference in wins and ranking third in strikeouts in 2011. Brian Budrow and Jordan Whatcott were each drafted in 2009. Crawford previously spent two seasons as associate head coach at Yavapai College where the Roughriders were 41-16-1 in 2008. They climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national polls, and won their league with a 30-8 mark. Crawford’s pitching staff was one of six schools in the 13-team league with an earned-run average below 4.00 (3.81). Yavapai was fourth in the conference in strikeouts (393). From 2002-05, Crawford was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. He helped the Apaches to a pair of second-place league finishes (2004, 2005), and the 2005 pitching staff had the lowest earned-run average in the conference (2.66). As CC recruiting coordinator, he saw three of his four recruiting classes play for a regional championship. Before that he worked two seasons at Pima College in Tucson, Ariz. Crawford played at the University of Arizona from 1999-2000. He was a starting pitcher for the Wildcats both years and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Week in May, 1999. He graduated from UA in 2001 with a bachelor’s of science in communication and went on to get his master’s from the United States Sports Academy in 2008. The Tucson native’s playing career began at Yavapai College as a starting pitcher in 1997-98. In 1998, he was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Pitcher of the Year. Crawford and his wife, Sarah, have an eight-year-old son, Kolby.

Assistant coach Bryan Kinneberg is in his seventh season on the Utah coaching staff. He serves as hitting coach and is the third base coach. From 2009-11, Kinneberg coached C.J. Cron into one of the best hitters in the country. Cron, who was a two-time first-team AllAmerican and a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, was a first-round draft pick in 2011. Cron and James Brooks finished first and second in the MWC in 2011 in batting average, while Cron led the nation in slugging percentage. In 2012, Brooks was second in the Pac-12 in doubles, tied for fifth in home runs and ranked in the top 10 in the conference in slugging percentage. In 2008, Utah led the conference with a .323 batting average. Utah was third in the Pac-12 in triples (18) last season. Kinneberg previously spent two years at Oklahoma State as its volunteer assistant coach. At OSU, he assisted with the hitters and infielders and coached first base. The Cowboys led the Big 12 in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2007, including batting average (.319), doubles (144), home runs (86) and slugging percentage (.518). In addition, the team fielded at a .971 clip. While on staff at OSU, Kinneberg saw the team make two postseason appearances. In 2007, the Cowboys were one win away from the College World Series, falling to Louisville in the third game of the Super Regional. OSU went 83-41 while Kinneberg was on staff, and had a school record 11 players taken in the MLB draft in 2007. Kinneberg played at North Carolina State where he was part of two NCAA Regional teams. He also played for Phoenix College in Peoria, Ariz. Kinneberg was an all-district player there, ranking among the league’s best hitters. Phoenix played in the NJCAA national title game in 2001. He graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in philosophy. Kinneberg and his wife Stephanie have a son Gavin and daughter Ella Grace.

SMITH’S BALLPARK The University of Utah plays in perhaps one of the most beautiful settings in the nation. Nestled in downtown Salt Lake City, but with sprawling views of the 11,000-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountain range, is Smith’s Ballpark.

Smith’s features seating that curves towards the playing field to enhance sight lines for every seat. The suite level is one of the closest upper decks in the nation, offering fans the amenities of comfort without sacrificing proximity to the field of play. The outfield is asymmetrical (345 feet down the left-field foul line, 386 to the leftcenter alley, 420 feet to center field, 373 feet to the right-center alley and a 315 feet down the right field line). Right field has a short home run porch; bullpens are on the field, directly in front of the fans. Not only is Smith’s field home to the Utes baseball program, but it’s also home to the Salt Lake Bees. The Bees are the Triple-A farm club of the Los Angeles Angels.

UTAH ATHLETICS HISTORY The latest chapter in Ute athletics history began on July 1, 2011, when Utah officially became a member of the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah’s reputation as an athletics power was established long before it joined the “Conference of Champions.”

TWO NO. 1 PICKS IN THE SAME YEAR Utah made NCAA history in 2004-05 when it became the only school ever to produce a No. 1 NFL and NBA draft pick in the same year. Quarterback Alex Smith was taken by the San Francisco 49ers and center Andrew Bogut went to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Football is 628-435-31 in its 119-year history. In the mid-1990s, the Utes evolved from a conference contender to a national force and they now play to sold-out crowds in 45,017-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium. The original “BCS Buster,” Utah is 2-0 in BCS bowl games with wins over Alabama (2009 Sugar Bowl) and Pittsburgh (2005 Fiesta Bowl). The Utes won nine consecutive bowl games from 1999-2009, tying for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history and the longest since Florida State won a record 11 straight from 1985-96. Utah has finished in the nation’s Top 25 six times, including a No. 2 ranking in 2008 and a No. 4 finish in 2004. Men’s Basketball has thrived throughout its history, winning an NCAA Championship in 1944 and finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 1998. Utah, which also won national championships in 1916 (AAU) and 1947 (NIT), has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 nine times. The Utes rank in the top 15 in the nation in all-time victories (1,685) and sixth in regular-season conference titles (29). Utah’s 27 NCAA Tournament appearances and 35 NCAA Tournament wins rate among the top 25 programs. Women’s Gymnastics boasts 10 national championships and eight runner-up finishes. Utah is the only school to qualify for all 32 NCAA Gymnastics Championships and has captured the most All-America awards. Utah holds every gymnastics attendance record, averaging more than 11,000 fans a home meet for the past 22 years and nearly 14,000 over M E D I A

the past four years. In fact, Utah won its third NCAA women’s all-sports season attendance title in 2013, averaging 14,349 fans to its home meets. Women’s Basketball has averaged over 20 wins a season since its start back in 1974-75. The Ute women have received 17 NCAA Tournament invites since 1982—advancing to the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight once. They have won 22 conference championships. Utah was the WNIT runner-up in 2013. The Men’s and Women’s Ski Team has captured 10 NCAA Championships, including five in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. Volleyball has participated in 10 of the last 15 NCAA Tournaments with two Sweet 16 finishes. Softball has qualified for the postseason 18 times (13 NCAA) and has five College World Series appearances (four NCAA). Women’s Soccer has played in the NCAA Tournament in five of the last 11 years. Baseball won the 2009 Mountain West Conference tournament and claimed two victories at the NCAA Regional. Other Ute athletic highlights include: Men’s Tennis (24 conference championships), Women’s Tennis (three-consecutive NCAA appearances from 2010-12), Men’s Swimming and Diving (24 conference championships), Women’s Swimming and Diving (2006 MWC champion) and Women’s Cross Country (1981 AIAW Division II National Champion).
