The University of Utah athletics program will begin its membership in the prestigious Pac-12 Conference beginning in 2011-12. Founded in 1850, the University of Utah now encompasses 1,500 acres in the foothills of the towering Wasatch Mountain range. Starting his fifth season as the head coach of the University of Utah swimming and diving team, head coach Greg Winslow is continuing to develop the Ute squad and leading them into their inaugural Pac-12 conference. Six school records and one conference record were broken on the women’s side in 2010-2011, while the men set 6 school records respectively. The 2010-2011 seasons proved to be good one for the Utes. The women held an 8-6 record with a 5-3 finish against MW competition. The women had a strong showing at the conference tournament finishing in fifth with a score of 443. The men finished 3-8 overall and 0-5 in conference matchups. They posted a score of 471 and finished fifth at the MWC Championships. Seven Ute women were named to the all-MWC team as well as three relay squads. They were joined by six all-MWC men and four men’s relays. For the 2009-10 season, the Utah men’s swimming and diving team finished with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 record in MWC competition. The Utes finished sixth at the MWC Championships, scoring 401 points along with eight athletes being named to the All-MWC team. They ended the season by beating rival BYU, which ended a five-year losing streak against the Cougars. As for the Ute women, they finished their campaign with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-4 record in the MWC competition. At the MWC Championships, the women finished fifth with 377 points and six athletes were selected to the All-MWC team. The Utah women’s team ended the 2008-09 season 11-2-1 and finished fourth at the 2009 MWC Championships after scoring 469 points. The Ute men’s team improved throughout the season, defeating Air Force and narrowly falling to BYU and Wyoming, before finishing sixth at the 2009 MWC Championships, totaling 326 points. Winslow coached the third women’s All-American in Utah history and the Utes broke 10 school records and five MWC records on the women’s side and four men’s school records In 2007-08, his first season at Utah, Winslow led the Utah women’s squad to third place at the 2008 MWC Championships and it was one of the first signs that this young team will be a contender for years to come. The Ute women ended their regular season with a 6-5 overall record and were 5-3 in conference. A young Utes’ men’s team showed flashes of its potential with a sixth-place finish at the 2008 MWC Championships (353.5 points). Winslow came to Utah after four years as an assistant at Arizona State University. He coached 12 All-Americans during his tenure, which began in 2003. Six of his swimmers qualified for the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials, while other swimmers represented Great Britain and Hungary in the 2004 Olympics. Winslow helped lead the 2005 women’s squad to a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships, while the men’s squad finished in 14th in 2006.

In August 2005, Winslow became the head coach of the Sun Devil Aquatics swim club, overseeing a staff of 12 coaches. The Sun Devils placed third at the 2007 USA Swimming National Championships. He also coached the team to the 2006 Western Sectional Championship and won the 2006 and 2007 Junior National Women’s Championshipd. Five swimmers qualified for the Olympic trials, including five national and eight junior national qualifiers. Winslow’s athletes broke 22 Arizona state records, while his girls team set national 13-14 age group records in the 200 free relay and the 400 long and short course relays. Sun Devil Aquatics was named USA Swimming’s No. 1 Silver Medal Club in 2007. During his time with the Sun Devils, Winslow qualified four athletes for the US National Junior team. That is the most swimmers one coach has ever qualified at the USA swimming level in history. Winslow served as the CEO and head coach at Air Force Academy Falfins swim club from 1999-2003. While with the Falfins, Winslow increased the number of swimmers in the program from 53 to 140, added five assistant coaches and started programs at two new facilities. He developed seven national qualifiers and his athletes set 28 Colorado state records. Winslow was named the 2001 Colorado Coach of the Year. He served as the USA Swimming Colorado coaches representative from 2002-03 and worked as an assistant coach at Air Force from 2001-03. Winslow began his coaching career with the Valley Swim Team in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1996. He led Valley to its first city championship in 1997 and the seasonal state championship in 1998. Valley won the State Spirit award both years and Winslow was named the 1997 Colorado Seasonal Coach of the Year. His first collegiate coaching job was as an assistant at Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., from 1998-99, where he helped guide the Huskies to their highest NCAA Division II finish in school history. Winslow swam for the University of North Dakota for four years, where he earned All-America status in 1996. He played a key role in leading the men’s team to four conference titles, serving as team captain in his final two years. Winslow earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from North Dakota in 1998. He was married in August 2002 to his wife Jessica and the couple’s first child, son Noah, was born in August 2008. Their second child, Tatun, arrived November 4, 2010.

Beginning as a volunteer coach at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in 1999, King moved onto becoming the head coach at St. Cloud Apollo High School and later the assistant women’s and men’s coach at Monticello High School, where he helped swimmers to numerous men’s and women’s top 8 state finishes and a men’s 100 fly state championship. He left Monticello High to help co-coach the Monticello Swim Club. From 1998 to 2004, he assisted athletes to sectional and zone qualifications, three state records, and six different state championships. He also saw one qualifier for Junior Nationals. Since 2004, King has been on staff at the Stanford International Swim Camp, helping coach athletes with Olympic swim coaches Skip Kenney and Richard Quick as well as Olympic Medalist Lea Maurer. King returned to St. Cloud State University as assistant men’s and women’s coach for two years and trained his team to 9 All-America titles and 9 school records. He is coming to Utah from Milikin University in Illinois, where he spent the last year as head men’s and women’s coach and aquatics director. King graduated from St. Cloud University with his degree in social sciences and secondary education, with an emphasis on history. He also minored in coaching. He also has completed his Master of Science in Sports Management degree.

Richard Marschner is beginning his first season as the diving coach at the University of Utah. While attending the University of Louisville, Marschner was a four-time Conference USA diving runner-up and qualified for the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Diving Zone qualifiers. He graduated from Louisville in 2005 with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.S. in Justice Administration. Following graduation, Richard worked in multiple high diving shows around the world from 2005-2007 including places like Dalian, China; Metz, France and Lake George, NY. He performed multiple stunts including 70 foot high-dives, fire-dives and other stunts at various theme parks. While still in college, Marschner spent his summers as the head diving coach at the Owl Creek Country Club, coaching kids ages five to 18. While coaching there, he was named Country Club Swim Association 2003 Dive Coach of the year. From 2004-2007, Marschner was the head coach of the high school group as well as an assistant coach for Junior Olympic group for the Louisville Area Diving club team. In late 2007, he was announced to be the first diving coach at the University of New Orleans since 1992 and was charged with restarting the dormant program. While at UNO, he coached two divers to the NCAA Zone D meet, had divers finish in the top-eight 11 times in two years at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, and two divers were on the Sun Belt Conference Honor Roll with the whole men’s team having the eighth-highest GPA in the US. Prior to coming to Utah, Marschner was the head diving coach at UNO as well as for the Green Acres Country Club in Metairie, La.

Lisa Pursley Assistant Coach First Season

Jonas Persson joins the University of Utah swimming and diving coaching staff for his first season in 2011-12.

Lisa Pursley will join the Ute coaching staff for the 2011-12 season, its first competing in the Pac-12 Conference.

Persson has competed against the highest levels of international swimming, including the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where he was a member of the fifth-place 4x100 free relay and finished 11th in the 4x100 medley relay. Persson was a part of the European champion 4x100 free relay in 2008 and the bronze medalist squad in 2010. He remains a Swedish recordholder and the No. 2 sprint freestyler in the history of Sweden.

Pursley was a three-time All-American at Arizona and was also named an Academic All-American, earning the Mary Roby Academic Achievement Award as well. In 2006, the Olympic Trials qualifier helped the Wildcats to the Pac-10 championship.

During his collegiate career, Persson set seven school records at Tennessee where he was an All-American and team captain for the Volunteers. In the classroom, Persson obtained a Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Sports Studies and a Bachelor of Business Administration from UT and also served as a graduate assistant on the staff of 2011 SEC Coach of the Year, John Trembley. He was an Academic All-American and SEC Academic Honor Roll selection in 2007 and 2008, working primarily with the sprint group. Persson helped expand Tennessee’s international recruiting network by communicating with athletes, coaches and parents in 16 different countries. Persson has already put his education into practice as he has conducted contract negotiations with the Swedish Olympic Committee and a top-five swim team in Sweden

Graduate Assistant Coach Second Season

Hailing from West Valley City, Utah, Van Leeuwen begins her second season on the coaching staff after graduating from the University of Utah where she swam throughout her college career for the UTes. Throughout her years on the Utah swim team, Van Leeuwen broke school records across the board in many freestyle and relay events. In 2007, she was named to the All-MWC team for the 200 and 400 free relays. She was also on the All-MWC team in 2009 for 100 breast, 200, 400, and 800 free relays, and the 400 medley relay. Van Leeuwen was listed as an MWC Scholar athlete during her junior and senior years.

She graduated from Arizona with a B.A. in Elementary Education in 2007 and has worked as a swimming coach at the Phoenix Swim Club while pursuing her master’s degree at Arizona State. Pursley previously swam under Winslow while attending Coronado High in Colorado Springs. During the summer of 2008, Pursley worked for the Auburn Tigers swim camp where she helped create and coach dry land and swimming workouts for high school athletes. The following summer, she was an assistant coach for the Pine Crest swim team in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., under the direction of head coach Jay Fitzgerald. Last year, Pursley was an assistant swimming coach at Rutgers University under head coach Phil Spiniello. Pursley’s family has a swimming background. David Pursley, her brother, is a record-holding former Ute swimmer. Her father, Dennis Pursley, is the former Director of USA Swimming and is currently the Director of Swimming for Great Britain.

Charlie King is in his fourth year at the University of Utah and has seen a lot of success while coaching at the collegiate and high school levels.

The University of Utah women’s swimming and diving team is looking for a successful season in its inaugural Pac-12 season in 2011-12. The Utes lost a strong senior class from last year’s team, including Natalie Edge, Kristian Evans, Maiya Otsuka, Alyssa Woodliff and Kwan Ling Yu, but they welcome back several top performers from last season as well as six new team members. “The women’s team is small this year, but they have a lot of talent,” Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. “We’re looking for a break out year on the women’s side.”

Caron was honored for the 100 and 200 fly along with the 200 IM. Zuch earned her spot in the 200 free and the 100 back, while Swartz took the honors for the 50 and 100 free. Walters made the team in platform and the 1-meter dive. Caron, Swartz and Zuch all hold places in the Utah record book, including a number one slot for Caron and two for Swartz. The Utes anticipate that all three will be competitive in the Pac- 12 and could possibly earn All-American accolades.

Backstroke Schedule

Both Swartz and Zuch are only sophomores and are expected to make big a impact for Utah this season and over the next two years. Swartz, Utah’s current school record holder in the 100 free, will return to compete in freestyle events. Swartz is also in the record books for the 50 free and multiple free relays. Zuch will also be back. She holds the second-fastest time in the 500 free in school history and the thirdfastest 200 free in school history.

Swartz will be a force in the backstroke events. As a freshman in 2010-11, Swartz smashed the standing Ute 100 back record by 2.5 seconds.

Maddie Jamora will add depth in the freestyle sprint events. Jamora hails from Kapoli, Hawaii and won the OIA 50 and 100 free state champion and set the state record in the event

Senior and co-captain Sarah Cox, along with Danielle Caldwell, will also compete in backstroke events.

Distance freestyle events will be headed by Rebecca Bott and Kayla Buck. The two will be joined by freshman LeighAnne Oliver.

Caron holds yet another school record in the 200 IM and will continue to lead the Utes in this discipline. Ligeza will also competing in the IM events for Utah.

“I think she has just scratched the surface of what she is capable of,” Winslow said. “She is already stronger than she was at the end of last year.”

Diving

High hopes are aimed toward Caron for the 2011-12 season. Coming off her best season to date, Caron is the reigning two-time MWC champion in the 100 fly. At the NCAA Championships last season, she placed 30th in both the 100 and 200 fly events. Caron also claims the number two spot in the Utah record books for both the 100 and 200 fly. Breaststroke

Zuch, Nicole Ligeza and Oliver will represent Utah in the breaststroke events.

“This is the most talented group of divers we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said Winslow. “Both Jasmine Matkovic and Walters are putting together some fantastic dives.” Walters is entering her junior year and is looking better than ever. Last season, Walters was the MWC 1-meter champion and the MWC Diver of the Week on Dec. 7, 2010. Matkovic, an Australian native, comes to Utah after placing third in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the 2010 QLD State Championships.

The Utes kick off the season at the Intermountain Shootout (Oct. 7-8) where they will take on Northern Colorado, Colorado State and Colorado Mesa. Next, they will take a trip to California to face Stanford (Oct. 20) and California (Oct. 21). Following that, the Utah women face Washington State on Oct. 29 in their first home meet of the season. The Utah woman begin November with UNLV (Nov. 5) at home. Utah is on the road for the remainder of the month, facing Colorado State (Nov. 10), Colorado School of Mines (Nov. 11), and Denver, Northern Arizona, and Seattle University (Nov. 12) in a multiteam meet. At the tail-end of November, Utah diving will compete in the Wildcat Diving Invitational (Nov. 17-19). December brings the Incarnate Word Invitational (Dec.17-19). In January, the Utes will welcome Arizona to the Ute Natatorium (Jan. 7), then will face Oregon State and UCLA (Jan. 14). The Deseret First Duel against rival BYU (Jan. 27) comes at the end of January. Utah then will face Air Force (Feb. 10) for the second time in Colorado. The regular season wraps up with a home meet against USC (Feb. 17). The Pac-12 Diving Championships will take place in Federal Way, Wash., on Feb. 22-25 with the NCAA Zone Diving Championships held March 6-10 in USAFA, Colo. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala.

“Zuch and Ligeza should be able to step right into where Otsuka left off,” Winslow said. “Both will be great on relays and are really driven. We are excited to have Oliver and to see what she can do.”

Senior Hannah Caron represented Utah at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Samantha Zuch is already in the top three of the school record book in two events, the 200 free and 500 free.

Traycie Swartz set two individual school records in the 100 back and 100 free and was a member of two school-record-setting relays at the 2011 MWC Championships.

Women’s Season Outlook

Last season, six Ute women were honored with all-Mountain West Conference recognition. Four of those chosen, Hannah Caron, Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch and diver Ellis Walters, will compete for Utah this season.

Freestyle

As the Utah men’s swimming and diving team embarks on its inaugural Pac-12 Conference season, the Utes hope to compete for a top spot with a strong core of returners coming back from last season as well as seven new team members. “I think this is going to be our best year on the men’s side,” Utah head coach Greg Winslow said. “Last year was fantastic. We broke six school records, including a 19-year-old one, so this year promises to be even better.”

Robinson earned his spot for his performance in the 200 back for the second straight year and in the 400 medley relay. Applin was honored for the 200 IM and for the second consecutive year in the 100 fly. Three Utah men’s relay teams were recognized, with returners Applin and Gunnarsson in both the 200 and 400 free relays and Fiascone as a part of the 400. Applin and Robinson also swam for the all-MWC 200 medley relay team. Foo was recognized for 3-meter and platform dives. Leadership is key for the Utes this season. They will look to senior co-captain Robinson and junior co-captain Andy Lamb as well as seniors Bonicelli and Murray to provide guidance for the entire team. “We have some great leadership in our seniors,” said Winslow. “Those guys know what it takes to be successful. They’ve accomplished a lot while leading this team, including beating BYU for the first time in several years.”

The incoming freshman will be a big part of the Ute freestyle lineup as both Nick Soedel and Winter Heaven figure to be huge assets to the Utah squad this season. Soedel comes to Utah as a two-time CIFDI champion in the 100 free and a Sunset League record holder in the 50 free. Joining him is Heaven, an Alaskan native. Heaven broke an unprecedented seven state records and broke every school record at Kenai High School. Heaven earned Swimmer of the Year honors in 2010 and 2011. Also competing in sprint freestyle events is junior Bjorn Gunnarsson. Last season, Gunnarsson finished 16th in the 50 free at the MWC Championships and won the 100 free during regular-season competition against Wyoming. “Sprint freestyles should be really strong,” Winslow said. “Gunnarson, Soedel, and Heaven, will be the three guys we look to there. Soedel is one of the top freestyle sprinters in the country and Heaven is a really talented kid. Both have the ability to do something really special.” Bonicelli will be the strength of the distance freestyle races. He is the current Utah record holder in the 1650 and will be Utah’s main distance competitor. Breaststroke

Applin and Corey Williams will return to compete in the breaststroke events. Last season, Applin placed 12th in the 100 breast at the MWC Championships and Williams took 15th in both the 100 and 200 breast events. Alongside them will be freshman Ken Titges, who was a two-time all-conference selection at Eastern Illinois. As a prep, Titges placed sixth in the state of Illinois in the 100 breast as a junior and seventh as a senior.

Diving With all three top Ute men returning, the men’s diving team has high expectations for this season. Foo, Brandon Stopplemoor and Caleb Herrick all placed in the top 10 at the MWC Diving Championships last season. Foo and Stopplemoor had top-20 finishes at the NCAA Diving Regionals. IM Murray and Applin will be back to compete in IM events. Last season at the MWC Championships, Murray placed eighth in the 400 IM while Applin took the sixth spot in the 200 IM. Applin earned a spot on the all-MWC team with his performance. The IM frontrunners will be joined by Tilges. Backstroke Lamb, Robinson and Fiascone will be the frontrunners for the Utes in the backstroke events and newcomer Soedel will join the ranks. Robinson placed fifth in the 200 back at the MWC Championships and was named to the all-MWC team for the second straight year. Butterfly In 2011, Applin placed fifth in the 100 fly and was named to the all-MWC team with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time. Applin is one of the top butterfly swimmers in the country and is expected to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Heaven and Murray will also swim in fly events.

Schedule The Utes kick off the season at the Intermountain Shootout (Oct. 7-8), where they will take on Air Force and Colorado Mesa. Next, they will take a trip to the Golden State to face Stanford (Oct. 20) and California (Oct. 21). Following that, Utah face UNLV (Nov. 5) in its first home meet of the season. Karson Applin will serve as a co-captain this season after earning two all-MWC awards in 2010-11.
