There are not enough doctors that are like him. PM&R REHABILITATION THERAPY Letter from patients: “Thanks to the PT department staff for the care that they put into my recovery program. I have graduated to outpatient therapy. If it had not been for the great start with your department, I would not be doing as well as I am today. I also went to Oneida Health Care for daily exercises. They “threw me out” last Friday and had me start OP PT on Wednesday. I am not using a walker, have been cleared to drive locally, and if I am not too tired, can get around the house without the cane. When I was admitted to Upstate I was in terrible shape, as you well know. Thanks to all of you and the good Lord, I am making a remarkable recovery, still working hard. Thanks again to everyone who put up with my humor.” “Thanks to Todd Charland PT and kelly Meyers PT for the wonderful care of our daughter. Although we are a five-hourcar-ride away, we could ‘see’ our daughter’s progress over the phone. We could hear her confidence grow after each PT session. Your encouragement, enthusiasm and skilled guidance that lead her through her rehabilitation are truly appreciated.” Letter from a patient: “Thanks to the wonderful people who work in your University Hospital Outpatient PT Office in Manlius. Bette Lou Sgarlata in the front office always seemed glad to see me. She worked diligently to schedule me and always encouraged me with comments on the improvements. Every time I walk up a flight of stairs, get in and out of my bathtub or go for a walk without a

cane, I quietly thank the therapists—Cassie Terpening PT, kelly Meyers PT, Tim Stayer PT, Terry Clark PT and Christine Reiger PT who worked so hard for over a year to help me get better. I felt they truly cared about me. They pushed me to move, heal and have faith that I would get better. They each had their own area of expertise and ideas—that together—made it possible for me to believe that I could beat this injury and walk one my own. Every time I went to that office, no matter which therapist worked with me, I felt that they were totally focused on getting me better. While I appreciate the entire team, I want to take a moment to thank my main therapist Cassie Terpening PT for absolutely going above and beyond the call of duty. While she eventually felt like family to me, she never stopped being the consummate professional therapist. She pushed me when I needed to be pushed; she encouraged me, lifted me up and made me get better. She was caring and addressed my many questions, concerns, physical difficulties and fears. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for her. Terpening was also acknowledged by another patient along with Sgarlata for making “every aspect of my treatment excellent.” Another patient said receptionist Sgarlata “is so welcoming and extremely helpful. I found Dr. Fink to be very thorough, caring and just a genuinely nice person. I would recommend him to anyone.”

SURGERY CENTER The Surgery Center has an “excellent staff.” Michelle Dixon “was wonderful.” She “settled my granddaughter down” by giving her a little bear and some candy. “My granddaughter asks to go there all the time now.” SURGERY-GENERAL Thank you for referring my husband to surgeon Dr. Barbara Robinson. When he was having a bad day, “the girl who wrote his menus knew what he liked.” Once when she had to leave, she felt guilt when he had to be intubated again. “The nurse told me not to blame myself. This was comforting to me and I was

able to work knowing he was getting the best care possible.” The ED also managed to keep him alive every time he came in. “I would always brag about the great job the ED did as that is where I work. When they knew Ray was coming in, they were ready and waiting. The nurses took extra good care of me, as a wife and employee. I am starting to tear up as I will always consider the ED and 8E my extended family.” Letter from patient: “I want to express my gratitude for the outstanding clinical care delivered by Upstate staff. From Internal Medicine to oncology to Hospice Care and finally Palliative Care, the medical professionals at Upstate guided us through a “lifecycle” of care in just six days. It is in no small part, thanks to this team that we were able to cope and make sound decisions during difficult times. A special thanks goes to the first interaction we had at Upstate with Dr. elliot Rodriguez in Emergency Medicine. He was professional, helpful and sympathetic to our situation. He worked with my mom to ease her fears and offered great encouragement. Thrown into a situation with more questions than answers, Dr. Peter Cronkright, in Medicine systematically worked through the issues and provided us with thoughtful, intelligent, intuitive answers as he learned them. We leaned heavily on him for guidance, analysis and clear thinking. He was gracious and kind to the entire family and we are incredibly grateful to him. I believe that Dr. Cronkright is one of the most exceptional providers I have encountered—Upstate should be proud to have him on their team. karen Fallat RN coordinated the necessary conversations with the appropriate

individuals or departments and kept the family inside the circle of knowledge with clear, compassionate communication. Dr. Stephen Graziano, in Medicine, walked us through an overwhelming amount of information with clear, steady and calming presence. He patiently talked through the issues, answering honestly with clear and articulate explanations. And finally, Dr. Barb krenzer, Medicine, whose knowledge, trustworthy and empathic ways helped us through this challenging journey.” Letter from patient’s family: “I recently had to take my husband for a medical procedure at Upstate, where he needed wheelchair service. As I pulled into the drop off area, a guard advised me to advance to the dismemberment area. Then I was very cordially greeted by the Ambassador Services personnel. The gentleman proceeded to help my husband, escorting him personally to the department for his procedure. After parking and a friendly shuttle ride back to the entrance, this same ambassador recognized me and personally escorted me to my husband. After the procedure, another ambassador escorted us both to the waiting shuttle and we were loaded and transported back to the garage—the shuttle driver even helped get him settled into our vehicle. All I can say is WOW! And a huge thanks to you for this service.” Letter from volunteer: “Upstate Hospital now with the Children’s Hospital and the new acquisition of Community General is certainly a major health care industry in CNY. As a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, I see that guests from all over are grateful for our area’s health care services.”

The information she provided made things easier for all of us, and her presence helped lighten the mood. Dianna’s attitude was infectious— her positive energy carried over into the OR. I am grateful to have such excellent colleagues.”

Manager, Spiritual Care—”for the wonderful care you gave to our son/brother Michael Schoeneck during the last days of his life. “We were all able to see the PatientsFirst Philosophy and the Patient and Family Centered Care model at University Hospital come to life. Whether it was finding chairs for 10 family members, or the staff continuously checking in on our family, or for the Family Lounge area—a large enough place for our family to gather, the environment felt comfortable. Michael continuously commented about how compassionate the staff during the 13 days he was at University Hospital. We were all extremely impressed and observed first hand what a difficult job it is work in a healthcare environment. During Michael’s last hours on New Year’s Eve of 2010, our nurse Amanda was remarkable in checking in on us. She had the hard job of telling our family that Michael no longer had a heartbeat. That will be something never forgotten.

HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY TABLE Last year, the Upstate grounds crew learned that a tree in the Weiskotten courtyard had to be cut down because of safety concerns. For years, many had tried to save the ailing American Black Walnut tree. To preserve the tree in the only way possible, some wood was salvaged. The planks were cured for a year in the carpentry shop in the basement of Upstate University Hospital. President David Smith liked the idea of creating a table from the wood for the Health Sciences Library. Sean Behm, an Upstate carpenter, offered to make the table, basing its design on the work of architect/ woodworker, George Nakashima (1905-1990). In keeping with Nakashima’s designs, the top of the table retains the angled curve of the tree trunk, is built entirely without nails and screws, and is constructed with handmade wooden pegs, wooden dowels and glue. “Woodworking is my passion,” said Behm, who took just a week and a half to build the table between standard carpentry requests.
