PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAMS “I am proud of our residency program’s legacy. Not only is the integrated role of our pharmacist a recognized, valuable resource across the institution but the value of our residency program is also acknowledged. Over the years we have expanded our program to include PGY-2 pharmacy residencies in key clinical areas (Pediatrics, Ambulatory Care, Infectious Diseases and Geriatrics) and have increased our PGY-1 program capacity while maintaining a rewarding training experience involving close mentorship from astute faculty preceptors. Our residents’ balanced involvement in medication management and advanced clinical pharmacy services makes them well prepared for success in PGY-2 residencies or establishing themselves as practitioners. It is my pleasure as director of pharmacy at Upstate to support and advance our efforts to develop the pharmacy leaders of tomorrow through residency training.” Luke A. Research and Publications our residency program provides both pGy-1 and pGy-2 pharmacy residents the opportunity to develop proficiency in research, manuscript writing and publication. With the introduction of our innovative eight-month research Certificate program, our residents have the opportunity to gain a strong foundational knowledge to help pave the way for success with their current and future research endeavors. the upstate pharmacy services translational research team (upstart), in collaboration with the upstate pharmacy residency programs, has worked tirelessly to create a

“Pursuing a residency at Upstate has been a dream of mine since my first introductory rotation as a student at Upstate. The preceptors and residents immediately welcomed me into the “Upstate family” and taught me more than I had ever thought was possible. I felt like I belonged at Upstate. I was drawn to the teaching certificate offered through St. John Fisher College’s Wegmans School of Pharmacy, where I completed my pharmacy education. It felt rewarding to give back to the students where I went to school. The research certificate offered in this program sets Upstate apart from other institutions.

PGY-2 - AMBULATORY CARE RESIDENCY “The PGY-2 Ambulatory Care residency is a cosponsored program between Upstate Medical University and St. John Fisher College (SJFC) – Wegmans School of Pharmacy (WSoP). The residency, which began in 2011, primarily focused on developing services in an Internal Medicine medical residency training site. However, over the last several years the outcomes achieved by the clinical pharmacist and residents have influenced expansion of collaborative pharmacist practice to other adult outpatient specialty areas, such as Inclusive Health Services, Neurology and Rheumatology. It is the philosophy of the program to develop a strong clinical practitioner with a foundation in primary care but also educate the resident on critical aspects of sustainability and the elements of developing a successful business plan. The partnership with WSoP enhances the resident experience by developing academic teaching skills and mentoring pharmacy students for future opportunities in pharmacy practice. The blend of academic and clinical pharmacy provides the resident with the skills and abilities to develop a practice in either setting. The role of academic pharmacy is to drive innovation and I believe our program accomplishes that. I look forward to continuing to pioneer innovative pharmacy practice models in ambulatory care.” Elizabeth (Lisa) Phillips, BS Pharm, PharmD, CACP, BCACP PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program Director, Associate Professor and Chair, of Pharmacy Practice and Administration

“I chose to pursue additional training in Geriatrics after realizing the ongoing interventions this growing patient population requires in every phase of care. Working in multiple settings throughout the Geriatric residency allowed me to experience the gaps that exist in the transitions of patient care, and motivated me to find a career that encompassed addressing these issues. The PGY-2 in Geriatrics fully prepared me to fulfill my current responsibilities as a discharge pharmacist, where we focus on reducing medication errors and ensuring access to medications during the transition from the hospital to home. Utilizing the knowledge gained during residency, I can focus on reducing potentially inappropriate medications in the elderly and recommend alternatives to ensure the safest therapy for our patients. Training at Upstate provided the support and advanced curriculum needed to become a well-rounded clinical pharmacist, and I am confident I will continue to use what I have learned throughout my residencies in my everyday practice.
