From the Editor

In this Issue:

Evangelist Ericka Ward EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Special Greetings to all of you who continue to support Divine Concept Group in prayer, donations and your presence. We have endured many trials to get to this point‌ this marks 5 years of service to our community. We have all faced challenges in life that have caused us to question whether we could go on any further or should we just give it up. But when we press forward the rewards of enduring are great. The word tells us to endure hardness as a good soldier, to press toward the mark of the high calling which is in Christ Jesus, to be careful for nothing but in all things through prayer and supplication, make our requests known unto God. The word is full of exhortations that say DO NOT GIVE UP. When we push beyond our limitations we can realize that God is truly able to do anything and we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us. God has given each of us assignments and they may seem too big to fulfill, but with Gods help we can do anything and truly exceeding abundantly above all that we could ever ask or think. So press on, you can realize your dream when you push beyond your limitations and fully lean and depend on the Lord

Andre Robinson Andre Robinson is a young man with a heart to worship and a vision to serve God’s people through the ministry of music. Since he was a young boy, Andre always knew he had a different path than his peers. He began singing at the age of five in the similar place of many artists—his local church. A couple years later, he won an elementary school talent show, which developed his desire to establish a career in the gospel music industry. Throughout the past few years, Andre has won numerous talent shows, performed with the Virginia Mass Choir, auditioned for BET’s hit singing competition, Sunday Best, and opened for Gospel-Great, Luther Barnes. The young worshippers’ musical gifts also extend beyond singing. He plays several musical instruments including the piano, all brass, woodwind and percussion; although, his voice still serves as his most distinct instrument due to its ―spiritual and prophetic‖ nature. This anointing provides a diverse sound to Andre’s music ministry, with the ability to transcend generational boundaries. ―I love to touch lives,‖ he said. ―There are so many ways you can connect through music and I believe music is another way to hear from God. Robinson’s greatest influence is his grandmother because, ―She would sing you over and under the pew like Mahalia Jackson,‖ he explains. He also looks to Christian Music Innovator, Mali Music, as another source of inspiration. Andre is currently pursuing his degree in music media at Norfolk State University. Throughout this journey, he continues to use his life as a means to show others the greatness of God. ―I believe in a true worship sound that reaches people where they are,‖ he said. ―Worship is a lifestyle—something that you model each and every day.‖

Mara Suggs Mara Suggs, is a native of Hampton, VA. She is eleven years old and is a sixth grader. She enjoys dancing, taking piano lessons, and singing. Mara’s gift for singing was marked when she was 8 years old in third grade. She entered her school’s talent show and won second place with her vocals to ―Hero‖ by Mariah Carey. She then began to pursue voice lessons with Edustar Academy of Performing Arts. She entered the talent show in 2011 singing, ―I’ll Always Love You‖ by Whitney Houston and won first place. In addition, Mara wrote her own song entitled, ―You Be You,‖ and entered it into Hampton City School’s PTA Reflections Program. She won Honorable Mention in the Musical Composition category. In her last year at her elementary school as a fifth grader, Mara entered the talent show once again, and sung ―I Believe In You and Me‖ by Whitney Houston and won first place. Though this was her last year at her school, it would not be her last time on stage. In 2012, Mara signed with Native Productions to manage her and Austintouch Productions to produce her, and she released her first single on October 21, 2012. The same day, Mara opened with a vocal tribute to Whitney Houston for a stage production featured at Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts. She returned to the Ferguson in December 2012 and opened for gospel artist, Euclid Gray. Mara is working on her musical career and her first CD of inspirational songs. Her music can be found on CDBaby, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Spotify, Sound Cloud, E-music, and online radio stations.

C1-Daniel Ballard Professionally known as Gospel Rapper C1, Daniel Ballard was born in Long island, New York, however, he currently resides in Newport News VA. Life in NY was not the same as he presently lives. Bad influences caused him to make iniquitous decisions and walk down the wrong path, but he always knew that he had a calling on his life. As a youth growing up in the streets of New York, Daniel possessed a powerful mindset that he could make a difference and save souls for the kingdom of God. Daniel started rapping at the age of 16 and developed wonderful skills. Many secular rappers who noticed this influenced him to sell drugs to make money, and told him that it was the only way he could get in the record industry and ―make it Big‖ in rap entertainment. He didn't go that route for long. Daniel asked God for a special gift to rap unto the people. God gave him this give gift, but unfortunately used it for the wrong reasons. As a result, he felt that God allowed everything to be stripped and he became homeless. One night when he prayed for God to come in his life and let His will be done, God gave Daniel a dream that revealed he would be very successful. However, this dream revealed Daniel in God’s Glory as a Gospel Rap Artist. In the dream, God told him that his job would be to save souls all over the nation and deliver people from bondage through powerful lyrics. He clearly understood his calling. From that point, Daniel adopted the name C1, which stands for Chosen One. C1’s mission is to make a positive impact and save souls for the Kingdom of God. C1’s first EP, ―The Purpose,‖ has a clear message revealing his testimony and calling to spread the gospel through his inspired lyrics. ―Condemn Me‖ shares C1’s transition from darkness to light, while ―Awesome‖ gives God the praise for his victory. ―Yes I Believe‖ professes C1’s faith in God and asks his listeners to call upon the Lord to be saved. ―My Vow‖ shares details about C1’s promise to God to not go back on his word, to continue sharing the good news. ―Fire In My Bones‖ is a song that declares war on the enemy. Finally, with ―Increase,‖ C1 asks God for more love, patience, and wisdom to carry out HIs perfect will for his life.

The Taylor Singers The ―Taylor Singers‖ is a family group that has been singing for many years. This group began with soloist Sis. Christine Harrison, her melodious voice could be heard every Sunday morning during worship service before the pastor’s sermons. Later came Barbara, Shirley, Gwen and Sheila. The sisters and their niece continued to carry on the family tradition of singing to the glory of God under the leadership of their parents Leslie and Annie Taylor. Time moved on as did the children. The group took a sabbatical and later returned with the dynamic duo Sheila and Gwen with ―On the Jericho Road‖. Shirley and Barbara returned with full force singing Gods praises. In recent years the group reformed to include Shirley, Gwen, Sheila, Ramona, Anita, Linetta and Carl. The group as it is today is comprised of Shirley, Gwen, Ramona, Anita, Linetta, Meredith, Geneva, and Dwyane. They continue to represent the Taylor Family keeping this family tradition alive and a strong belief that through God all things are possible. With competitions such the Pepsi Cola Showdown where out of thousands of people the family placed third. Engagements have included Family and Friends Day, Pastoral Anniversary, Installation Services, First Ladies Day, Birthday Parties and many other functions, the family has built a reputation of willingness to serve God and give their all to every performance. The Spiritual Gifts of West Tennessee The soul stirring sounds of the Spiritual Gifts will have you stomping your feet, raising your hands in praise and worship, and will put rhythm in your head and body. The Spiritual Gifts is a gospel quartet singing group that was established in 2004 by Rhonda Emery. The group started with a total of five members and has expanded to 11 members including musicians. The Spiritual Gifts have compiled four completed CDs which were all written and produced by their Visionary, Rhonda Emery and some its members. They are currently working on their fifth CD entitled, ―God Can Do It.‖ They also obtain the rights to their music. The following musical instruments are used to produce their rich sound: the keyboard, the drums, the lead guitar, rhythm guitar and the bass guitar. The Spiritual Gifts has also taken their ministry to another level by giving back to the community. They support The Freewill Shelter and Outreach, a nonprofit organization, developed to provide Education, awareness and a second chance to those individuals who were once incarcerated.

Shannon Presley Since his youth days when singing in the church choir was mandatory, Shannon developed an interest of gospel music. However, outside of the church hip hop music was grabbing his attention. From Run DMC to John P. Kee there was the same amount of interest of the two. Once the arrival of Kirk Franklin's hit single "Stomp"; Shannon was amazed how the love of his two styles of music came to a clash. Later in life he found a passion to write music lyrics but he never knew the direction to take his writings. When struggles presented themselves in his life, he began to refer back to those songs he sang in the choir as a kid for inspiration. Suddenly building a relationship with God he focused his writings on rap lyrics pertaining to Gospel. Going from when it was mandatory to sing the gospel he now openly sings the gospel in rap form as he seeks to delight himself in the presence of God. 8

MSF: Making a Brighter Tomorrow for People with MS The world can look dark at times when you are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Some are in figurative darkness, looking for answers about this mysterious, disabling disease and how to cope with it in their lives. Some may even be in literal darkness, robbed of sight by optic neuritis – one of the many, varied symptoms multiple sclerosis can bring. Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system. Immune cells in the body attack the insulation covering the nerves, causing scars to form in the brain and spinal cord. Depending on the location of these scars, nearly any part of the body can be affected. Some lose the ability to walk, to see, to speak clearly. Others may have no visible symptoms but may be affected by crippling fatigue or severe pain. In addition, sometimes symptoms may come and go with no warning. The unpredictability of the disease can bring those affected to a dark place. Bringing Back the Light The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MSF) strives to bring light back into the lives of those with MS today with dozens of helpful programs, and to make a brighter tomorrow through advocacy and quality-of-life research. People with MS, their families and friends, and healthcare providers turn to MSF for a comprehensive approach to helping people with MS maintain their health and well-being. From emergency financial assistance to exercise & wellness programs, we offer programming and support to keep them selfsufficient and their homes safe, while our educational programs help them to learn to successfully manage the disease to maintain the best quality of life. The services offered by MSF can be life-changing. Ruthann, for example, applied for and received assistance through the MSF’s Homecare Assistance Grant Program. The program provided for a caregiver to help in the home, which in turn prevented Ruthann from having to move to a nursing home. “I want to say a big thank you to all at the MSF for helping me,” Ruthann wrote, “by sending someone to help me to care for me and my house. The work I can no longer do is now being done. Thanks to you, now I am able to stay in my home and enjoy my retirement years with my husband.” Help the Light Shine Established in 1986, the MSF is a publicly-funded charity. All MSF programs are funded through voluntary contributions; there are no membership fees or charges for any MSF services. So, the support of the public is essential to our ability to help individuals with MS to meet their daily needs. Will you shine your light against the darkness caused by MS? Please get involved today. To learn more about how you can support the MSF, please visit http://www.msfocus.org/support-themsf.aspx or call Hildy Berger, Fund Development Coordinator, at 800-225-6495.

Sunday Conference Speakers

Evangelist Valerie Langhorn The sixth of seven children, by wonderful parents, Valerie was not just born on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, {also the birth place of this years American Idol winner, Candice Glover}, but she was also raised in Holiness. Although Holiness was all she knew, Valerie did not give her life completely to God until she was invited to St. John COGIC in Newport News, Va, as a sophomore while attending Hampton Institute. She always knew God had a call, and His hand on her life; because whatever she did or found herself involved in, while in sin; she stayed in touch with God and His Power of Forgiveness. Valerie met her husband, Calvin, in church over 30 years ago; learned how to be a "good thing", in church; learned how to live Holy, in church; learned how to love her neighbor, in church, and is daily learning {in church}, that whatever she is going through, whatever the trial, whatever the test, God promised, ..."Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us." So, if anyone asks you, "what's the matter with Valerie?" Just tell them, "she is saved, sanctified, Holy Ghost filled, and running for her life." NOTHING ELSE REALLY MATTERS, RIGHT?

Evangelist Ericka Ward, D.D. Evangelist Ericka Ward is the founder and president of Divine Concept Group and Editor In Chief of Unveiled Purpose Magazine. She is also a grandmother of granddaughter Aniyah age 6. A psychiatric nurse/supervisor by vocation, her professional experiences have included being an officer in the U.S. Army, an Educator at Hampton University and twenty-three years as a registered nurse having worked with physical rehabilitation patients, deaf, blind and multidisabled residential students, and the majority of her career spent caring for adults in the state mental health system from short-term care patients to those with involvement in the legal system: either deemed incompetent to stand trial or not guilty by reason of insanity. Having a passion for educating and training, she is excited to be making a transition in her career into Staff Development & Training. Ericka was saved at the age of 7 on a U.S. Army base in Germany; she received the baptism in the Holy Ghost in a college choir rehearsal at Hampton University in 1985. She operates in the gift of prophesy within her ministry of exhortation and teaching. Since childhood she has always found true joy in encouraging others and sharing Jesus with anyone!!! She is a licensed Evangelist in the Church of God in Christ. She has been a member of the St. Johns COGIC under the training and guidance of her spiritual father, Bishop Samuel L. Green Jr. for twenty-five years. Evangelist Ward was honored with a Doctorate of Divinity degree from Norfolk Seminary & College in May of 2000. She has served in prison ministry for almost 20 years. She has also served as an announcer and co-host for the ―Faith for Living-Richer Life" television broadcast. Ericka loves to sing and has been an alto voice in her church choir the ―Faith for Living ―television choir‖ and Sanctuary Choir. She was also an original member of the gospel group Earl Bynum and "As We Are‖, and presently sings in the gospel group ―Sisters4Christ‖, with her sister Stephanie Barnes and two dear friends and sisters, Davanna Davis & Tamla Young. Having coordinated youth and family seminars in the past, it has been her dream to win souls and encourage others through events and activities that strengthen youth, families, and the community. Through her personal adjustments to balancing marriage, motherhood, and career coupled with previous life experiences she was inspired to seek out a few of her friends to work towards creating an event that would truly build women of all ages and minister to the diverse needs and responsibilities women bear. The culmination of this meeting of the minds and Ericka’s desire to help women to find their divine purpose, led to the birth of Divine Concept Group a 501c3 organization/ministry which helps others in any way we can to fulfill their Divine Purpose. Evangelist Ward ―Sister Ward‖, or ―sister Ericka‖ as she is known by many, loves people and endeavors to make her life’s work a reflection of all that builds and fulfills the Kingdom of God. It is her desire to be a source of support and inspiration to others as they seek out Gods Divine plan for their life. Contact Evangelist Ward to speak/minister at your event:

Spencer Wells and the Genographic Project THE GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT: YOUR STORY. OUR STORY. THE HUMAN STORY. At A Glance: The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where we originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Our team, led by renowned population geneticist Dr. Spencer Wells, has created a revolutionary new platform for studying deep ancestry to lead us on this journey. The project is a not-for-profit, multiyear, global initiative by National Geographic that uses genetics as a tool to address anthropological questions on a global scale. Launched in 2005, the first phase of the Genographic Project enlisted a consortium of 11 global regional scientific teams who, following regional institutional review scientific protocols, completed sample collection and DNA analysis in their respective regions. So far, more than 450,000 members of the public purchased a Genographic Project DNA Swab Kit to trace their own ancient ancestry. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the Genographic Project Public Participation Kits return to the research and to a Legacy Fund for indigenous and traditional community-led language revitalization and cultural projects. Building on the science learned from the first phase of the project and using new technology, the Genographic Project entered its second phase in 2012 with the release of the updated Geno 2.0 Kit. The project is open to members of the public to participate by purchasing a Geno 2.0 DNA ancestry kit from the Genographic website. Participants can also choose to register on the Genographic website to connect with other participants who share the same deep ancestry. Working together, we are unveiling the story of the greatest journey ever told: how our ancestors migrated from their African homeland to populate the Earth tens of thousands of years ago. Core Project Components: Scientific Research – The Genographic Project scientific consortium is charting a more comprehensive map of the early stages of human history by carefully comparing the DNA from world populations that have been genetically and geographically stable for hundreds or thousands of years. Ongoing field research grants leverage the knowledge gained from the first phase of the Genographic Project to answer remaining questions on the genetic diversity of humanity. Grants will look into how many different migrations out of Africa there were and how, if we all share common ancestry, do we all look so different. Public Participation– The Genographic Project encourages direct participation of the general public through public and educational 24

outreach in this real-time science research project via the purchase of a Geno 2.0 DNA Ancestry Kit for US$199.95 (free shipping and handling within the US). Kits may be purchased securely online at www.genographic.com. The Geno 2.0 Kit uses cutting-edge technology to shine a powerful new light on our collective past. Participants will learn the regional affiliations of their ancestry and if they have genetic traces of Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestry in their DNA. Participants can also choose to join the Genographic community by registering online. Members will be able to connect with other participants to find shared ancestors and play an active role in the historic quest to map the genetic journey of us all. Legacy Fund – A portion of the net proceeds from kit sales help fund ongoing research and the Genographic Legacy Fund. The fund supports community-led indigenous conservation and revitalization projects around the world. National Geographic Society: National Geographic, which developed the concept of the Genographic Project with its Explorer-inResidence Dr. Spencer Wells, provides overall coordination for the project, including management of grant and field operations, sales and distribution of the Participation Kits, communications, education and other related activities. Genographic Consortium: Internationally recognized experts in human population genetics and related disciplines, located at 11 research laboratories and universities, led regional efforts to obtain and analyze DNA samples from indigenous populations during the first generation of the Genographic Project. One additional scientist focuses on DNA collected from ancient samples. The participating centers are located at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (USA), Institut Pasteur (France), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain), Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Russia), La Trobe University (Australia), Fudan University (China), Madurai Kamaraj University (India), National Health Laboratory Service (South Africa), University of Auckland (New Zealand), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) And the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide (Australia). International Advisory Board: An international advisory board, composed of leading global authorities in a number of related disciplines along with representatives of indigenous communities, oversees the selection of populations for testing as well as the adherence to strict sampling and research protocols. The board also helps determine initiatives to be carried out under the Genographic Legacy Fund.

Spencer Wells speaks to an audience

SPENCER WELLS, Ph.D. Genographic Project Director Spencer Wells is a leading population geneticist for whom the Genographic Project represents the ultimate marriage of his two great passions, biology and history. The scientist, author and documentary filmmaker has dedicated much of his career to studying humankind’s family tree and closing the gaps in our knowledge of human migration. Now a National Geographic Explorer-inResidence, Wells is spearheading the Genographic Project, calling it ―a dream come true.‖ His hope is that the project, which builds on Wells’ earlier work featured in his book and television program ―The Journey of Man,‖ and which is being conducted in collaboration with other scientists around the world, will capture an invaluable genetic snapshot of humanity before modern-day influences erase it forever. Wells’ own journey of discovery began as a child whose zeal for history and biology led him to the University of Texas, where he enrolled at age 16, majored in biology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa three years later. He then pursued his Ph.D. at Harvard University under the tutelage of distinguished evolutionary geneticist Richard Lewontin. Beginning in 1994, he conducted postdoctoral training at Stanford University with famed geneticist Luca Cavalli-Sforza, considered the ―father of anthropological genetics.‖ It was there that Wells became committed to studying genetic diversity in indigenous populations and unraveling age-old mysteries about early human migration. Wells’ field studies began in earnest in 1996 with his survey of Central Asia. In 1998 Wells and his colleagues expanded their study to include some 25,000 miles of Asia and the former Soviet republics. His landmark research findings led to advances in the understanding of the male Y chromosome and its ability to trace ancient human migration patterns. Wells then returned to academia where, at Oxford University, he served as director of the Population Genetics Research Group of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford.

Spencer Wells and the Genographic Project Following a stint as head of research for a Massachusetts-based biotechnology company, Wells made the decision in 2001 to focus on communicating scientific discovery through books and documentary films. From that was born ―The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey,‖ an award-winning book and documentary that aired on PBS in the United States and on National Geographic Channel internationally. Written and presented by Wells, the film chronicled his globe-circling, DNA-gathering expeditions in 2001-02 and laid the groundwork for the Genographic Project. He is the recipient of numerous scientific awards, grants and fellowships, including the 2007 Kistler Prize for accomplishment in the field of genetics, and was recently appointed Frank H.T. Rhodes Visiting Professor at Cornell University. Since the Genographic Project began, Wells’ work has taken him to dozens of countries, including Chad, Tajikistan, Morocco, Papua New Guinea and French Polynesia. He has published three books, the most recent of which is ―Pandora’s Seed: The Unforeseen Cost of Civilization,‖ and is hard at work on his fourth. He lives with his wife, a documentary filmmaker, in Washington, D.C.

Science Proves Biblical Truths ~Ericka Ward Through the Genographic Project It has been proven that all mankind originated from two people referred to as Adam & Eve whose origins were in Africa. (The Garden of Eden) The genographic project allows you to have a DNA kit analyzed to determine your family migration from Africa to where you are today. The kits are just under $200.00 and well worth the discovery of those genetic truths thousands of years ago about ourselves and our families that family histories cannot begin to describe. Get your own report on your families migration from Africa and the breakdown of your genetic make -up all the way back to Adam & Eve!! The Genographic Project is an ambitious attempt to help answer fundamental questions about where humankind originated and how we came to populate the Earth. Using the latest genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns in DNA from participants around the world, our team of world-renowned scientists led by Dr. Spencer Wells, seeks to reveal our migratory history and to better understand the connections and differences that make up humankind.

ALIGNING YOUR WALK DEEPER WITH GOD Prophet Marcia Kinslow Does your spirit feel sluggish from time to time and in need an adjustment and alignment with God? People call out to God for revival although I agree with the Word! It’s important to do some housecleaning by fasting. Consider setting aside time for sacrificing the things that are pleasurable to you for “HIM Our Lord”. His Word declares in Isaiah 58:5 Is it a fast that I have cho-

sen, a day for a man to afflict his soul… 58:6 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? 7 is it not to share your bread with the hungry and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast ouT;

Consider fasting to align your spirit closer to God! When you really want to hear from God it is important to put some pleasant things on hold for a time to hear from God! Also, It is important to learn to listen to what He wants to say to us which may not have anything to do with what you need to hear about! His ways are higher and better than ours! If you would like to see some significant changes in your life agree to fast with us September 10 – October 1, 2013. It could be a Daniel fast of vegetables, fruits etc., no pleasant breads, deserts, or just eat one meal a day for 21 days. Whatever your needs are you may have to modify especially if you are on a doctor’s care or medications. You may need to fast television, news, telephone (certain times of the day) whatever may be hindering your walk with God. The fast also helps to break yokes for others so ask God who and what to pray for others during this time. Make sure to take time to prayer when you would have eaten and if you are eating reflect and seek God for what to pray for. Keep a journal and write out what He shows you… We will have a get together at the end of the fast for a Prophetic Gathering on October 4, 2013 at 6:45 pm, location to be announced. You are the Pearl by Jack Stoskopf If there is one thing I’ve learned in life is that through nature I can glean valuable life lessons. One of these lessons I learned early in life but never saw the application for my own life until recently. I was in fourth grade if I remember correctly and we studied about the state of Hawaii and Pearl Harbor. We learned the process of how pearls are formed when something like a grain of sand entered the oyster’s shell and caused it to feel pain so it would coat the sand with nacre which is in essence something of its own self. I would ponder this from time to time. I always had this attraction for pearls. I even gave my girls an oyster on their birthdays of which when they opened them they would discover the pearls inside. We would then place them in a necklace setting together. Over the years I would think about at length about what it was about oysters and pearls I was to learn. I began to study this a little bit and I discovered that not all oysters survive the process of forming the pearl and some develop infection and die. The others take years to coat the sand and turn it into something rare and valuable.

I knew all these things but for the life of me I didn’t grasp the real life lesson. I even posted on my Facebook page over a year ago I felt I was missing something but it was nice just know something beautiful could come out of pain. As a survivor of sexual abuse I was always questioning and trying to find something good in what happened but all I felt was pain and coped self destructive behavior. I saw myself as something less than ―normal‖ people. I was ashamed of who I was and thought if you only really knew me you wouldn’t like me. After much soul searching, many tears and conversations with God one night I saw the LIFE LESSON I was missing. I simply heard the words ―Jack’ you aren’t the oyster. You are the Pearl.‖ I heard the voice of God and it has forever transformed my life. I don’t know the source of your pain but one thing I do know, no one escapes the wounding of the soul. You, much like myself may have many questions of a painful past and focus on that pain. Maybe you have sought love and affection only to be used and left empty inside.
