Welcome to UNT! One of the first things that we suggest for a successful start to your freshman housing experience is to contact your roommate and begin talking about what you are both planning to bring to college. There is nothing worse than having two microwaves and no TV; or two of everything. Pack carefully. You will not be able to bring everything you own and have it all fit in your room. Remember, first pack everything you will need, then pack the things you will want. This way you will know what is necessary and what can wait until some space clears up. Remember, your residence hall staff are available to help you with your questions or to help you and your roommate create a roommate agreement.

Move in pro-tips from UNT Housing Whether you’re moving in to the residence halls for the first time or the fifth time, here is some useful information about moving in. Tip #1: Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, chair and dresser drawers for each student. When deciding what other items to bring, keep in mind that some halls do not have elevators. Tip #2: Some students choose to coordinate with their roommate and only bring one of each of larger items such as a microwave, mini-refrigerator and TV to maximize the space in the room. Tip #3: Remember you will be responsible for cleaning and restoring the room to its original state when you move out. For this reason, we recommend adhesive strips or hooks rather than nails. Another helpful tip is to purchase a shower curtain that you can throw away at the end of the year so that you do not have to clean the shower curtain that is provided. Simply fold the shower curtain we provide and place it in a drawer or in your closet for safe keeping. The following lists are not all inclusive, but includes the most frequently asked items. For more information, please see the Housing Handbook here http://housing.unt.edu/housing_policies

So, what should I pack? • Your ID Card: You’ll receive your ID at orientation, but don’t forget it at home when you move to campus! You will need your ID for check-in, getting into your residence hall and having access to your Dining meal plan. If you do not have an ID Card before you arrive, you will be issued a temporary card that you may use for a few days until you get an ID Card. • Sheets, towels and other linens: Extra-long twin sheets, pillow, spare pillowcase, blanket, mattress pad, towels, washcloth, etc. Your bed comes with a mattress, so (thankfully!) you don’t need to pack that. • Bathroom supplies: If your room has a connecting or private bath you will need to bring toilet tissue, hand soap and bathroom cleaners. After you check in, connecting and private baths are not supplied with toilet tissue, and you and your roommate will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining them. Shower curtains are provided, but feel free to bring a decorative shower curtain. For students who have a community bathroom, that bathroom is stocked and cleaned by UNT Housing staff. Everyone will want to bring typical toiletry items, a shower caddy/tote and shower shoes. • Clothing: Every room has hanging space and a dresser. Think practically about what you will need/wear. Maybe you can trade out summer and winter clothing. Also, you probably will end up getting lots of t-shirts from different organizations around campus. • Removable adhesive: Tape, tacks or nails cannot be used on the walls (but are OK on bulletin boards). Removable adhesive may be used for hanging posters and pictures on walls. Please be advised that any damage to the walls or the paint will result in damage charges when you move out. • Coaxial cable jumper for your TV. You will need to provide a jumper cable to connect your digital television to the wall outlet. You will also need a digital converter box if your television doesn’t have a built in digital tuner. • Dishes: Silverware, cups, plates, bowls, glasses, dish soap, dish towel, paper towels, etc. • Laundry supplies: Laundry basket or bag, and detergent for washer, fabric softener, stain fighters, etc. There are laundry facilities in every hall. • Cleaning supplies: broom, dustpan, mop, small hand-held vacuum. You can check out a full sized vacuum at your halls front desk. • Health care products: First aid kit, allergy, headache or stomach medications, adhesive bandages, sunscreen, etc.

• Throw rug: Student rooms are not carpeted. A 4’ by 6’ or 5’ by 8’ rug should fit in all rooms. You might want to coordinate bringing a rug with your roommate ahead of time. • Appliances that do not have exposed heating elements such as toasters or toaster ovens are allowed. Toasters and Toaster Ovens are allowed in College Inn, Honors, Legends, Mozart and Santa Fe Halls. Please see website for a listing of appliances that are not allowed in the halls.
