Debbie Hamlett A

s we start a new year filled with hope and potential, you continue to be at the center of all we do. Every day we tell important stories from across the country, Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin. Your investment in Milwaukee PBS is essential to our ability to serve you and your neighbors. Because you choose to support us, we’re able to bring you intelligent, thought-provoking, educational programs. This month, we’re thrilled to bring you Season 10 of FINDING YOUR ROOTS, NOVA, SECRETS OF THE DEAD, Season 4 of MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE and ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL. You’ll also see the 3rd Season of JOHN MCGIVERN’S MAIN STREETS and Season 10, the last one for DOC MARTIN. Plus, a new British series FUNNY WOMAN about a small-town beauty Queen in the 1960’s who dares to dream big and follow in the footsteps of her idol, Lucille Ball. AUSTIN CITY LIMITS 9TH ANNUAL HALL OF FAME will honor John Prine. He started writing songs at age 14, served in the Vietnam War and even joined the post office as a mailman. Prine was widely known as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation. His signature blend of humorous lyrics about love, life and current events as well as melancholy tales from his life still hold meaning today for many. Angel from Montgomery is one of those songs for me. I bet you have a favorite too!

FINDING YOUR ROOTS (NEW SEASON)

Join Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to uncover the surprising ancestral stories of 28 cultural trailblazers with fascinating histories. The series ends with an exploration of how science and history can inspire the next generation. Guests include: Alanis Morissette, Ciara, Valerie Bertinelli, Brendan Fraser, LeVar Burton, Dionne Warwick and Tracy Morgan just to name a few. Beginning 1/2, 7PM 10.1

Next month, tune in for the premiere of GOSPEL LIVE! PRESENTED BY HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR. This special musical celebration honors the legacy and influence of Gospel music in America. Contemporary secular artists and renowned gospel singers perform their favorite gospel classics. This one is not to be missed! Member contributions combined with other private support make up the majority of our operating budget at 64 percent. Every contribution absolutely makes a difference. Thank you again for your unwavering support of Milwaukee PBS! With appreciation,

Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager COVER Courtesy of Milwaukee PBS

MITTENS AND MORE 2023 RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATIONS

T

his year Milwaukee PBS brought back its Mittens and More charitable campaign after pausing the drive during the pandemic. The station asked for donations of new hats, scarves, mittens and gloves for all ages. Donors provided 2,958 items that served 21 agencies in our community. A large number of the items were lovely hand knit and sewed items. All of the community serving agencies who received items expressed their thanks for providing these items for those they serve. Milwaukee PBS wants to thank all of those who donated to this cause so generously. We know that heads, hands and hearts will be warmer this year thanks to you.

MILWAUKEE PBS January Program Highlights

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW: ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE CENTER Watch ROADSHOW's first visit to Alaska for treasures that include a 1969 Rolex Oyster cosmograph, an English bass violin, and Susan Butcher’s 1990 Iditarod trophy. Which Anchorage find is worth $50,000 to $100,000? 1/8, 7PM 10.1

THE COST OF INHERITANCE: AN AMERICA REFRAMED SPECIAL

Explore the issue of reparations for African-Americans. Building on key issues of diversity and democracy; slavery and its aftermath; and socio-economic indicators, this documentary puts real people and their family histories into the reparations debate. Personal stories, expert interviews and rich archival materials underscored by evocative music weaves a narrative around the issue of reparations today so many years after the historical understanding of the end of slavery in America. Noted speakers address the cumulative impact that Reconstruction, Black Laws, Jim Crow, modern day violence, discrimination added to divergent wealth trajectories and opportunities firmly rooted in the system of enslavement. Individuals seeking to bridge our human divide share their reparations quests and we begin to understand the myriad of initiatives already happening across the country on local, state & national levels to make reparations a reality. 1/8, 9PM 10.1

NATURE: BIG LITTLE JOURNEYS

Small animals, even tiny ones, must sometimes make epic journeys to find a home or a mate. While the distances may not seem monumental to us, to these little creatures the journey is monumental. Grasses appear like skyscrapers, mounds become mountains and raindrops fall as big as cars. Meet six heroic, tiny travelers risking it all to complete big journeys against the odds. 3 part series begins 1/10. 7PM 10.1

THE BROKEN PROMISE

After World War II, humanity declared that genocide would never be allowed to happen again. But "never again" has become "again and again," from Cambodia to Bosnia, Rwanda, China, Ukraine, and sadly more. What makes people dehumanize one another? Why does it keep happening? And what can we do to make "never again" a reality? THE BROKEN PROMISE explores the mechanics of genocide, the conditions that allow it to occur, and the ideas and institutions that stand against it. The film presents the raw, unflinching firstperson stories told by the survivors of genocide, and examines how the trauma of genocide ripples through generations.

NOVA: WHEN WHALES COULD WALK

A spectacular fossil graveyard reveals a 43-million-year-old whale that had four legs and could walk. Follow scientists as they search for new clues to how mammals moved from land into the sea to become the largest animals on Earth. 1/31, 8PM 10.1

AL CAPONE: Prohibition & Wisconsin New Documentary Explores Al Capone’s Connection to Wisconsin

T

he legend of Al Capone looms large over the state of Wisconsin, but how do we know if one of the most infamous men in American History actually visited the Badger State? New photographs and correspondence reveal not only personal friendships and a more playful side of Al Capone, but that he was trying to purchase property in the northwoods of Wisconsin. In AL CAPONE: PROHIBITION AND WISCONSIN, Brian Ewig and Traci Neuman bring to light a new angle on the man who was once public enemy number one. The half-hour documentary features the family Al Capone corresponded with, and the story of how they found out their grandfather was friends with one of the most infamous men in American History; a friendship that was hidden away for 90 years. The documentary also highlights personal stories from Al Capone’s oldest living granddaughter, Diane Capone. After living her whole life without revealing her family history, Diane has finally decided to tell the true stories of her grandfather.
