Debbie Hamlett L

ife’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King

We’re kicking off a new, regular, monthly, segment on 10THIRTYSIX™ called HOW WE HEAL, that explores education and real-life stories to help shed light on an often-misunderstood topic – mental health. Psychotherapist Elizabeth Cramer will explore the symptoms of depression and anxiety, along with the risks of suicide and treatments. February 15th at 7:30PM on Channel 10.1. Our podcast, SPEAKING OF …THE MISSING PEACE - An investigative audio series highlights domestic violence cases in Milwaukee County with a focus on the victims, and innovative approaches to possible solutions. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, domestic and intimate partner violence homicides have gone up 84% since 2019. This isn’t just a Milwaukee issue. Listen wherever you get your podcasts starting on February 23rd. Milwaukee PBS archives are filled with amazing treasures. Our team is combing through decades of video that showcase the performers, marching bands, animals, circus wagons and clowns into a new special called REMEMBERING THE GREAT CIRCUS PARADE. Tune-in on February 29th at 7PM on Channel 10.1.

FINDING YOUR ROOTS

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the extraordinarily diverse roots of journalist Sunny Hostin and actor Jesse Williams—telling long-lost stories of African and European ancestry that compel his guests to rethink their own identities. 2/6, 7PM 10.1

Did you know? In the year 2000, Milwaukee PBS produced the first live high definition broadcast nationwide for PBS, THE GREAT CIRCUS PARADE! GOSPEL, a new four-hour docuseries exploring the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Musical styles come and go, but there is one sound that’s been a constant source of strength, courage, and wisdom from the pulpit to the choir lofts on any given Sunday: the gospel. February 12 & 13 at 8PM on channel 10.1. And on BLACK NOUVEAU, we'll hear from Rael the Artist, a musician spreading the good news through blending gospel and hip-hop genres. The 25-year-old "gospel rapper" based in Madison, WI shares a powerful testimony grounded in overcoming doubt and health challenges with the help of faith, family and his music. February 8th at 7:30PM. Your support makes a difference, thank you!

Milwaukee PBS Producer Everett Marshburn First in State to Receive Gold Circle Honor

T

he Midwest/Chicago Chapter of the National Television Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that Milwaukee PBS’ Everett Marshburn will be honored in February as the first in the state to be inducted into the 2024 Wisconsin Gold Circle. The academy honors those who have devoted 50 years or more, making significant and enduring contributions to the industry and the vitality of the television industry. Gold Circle inductees set the standards of achievement we can all hope to emulate. For 55 years BLACK NOUVEAU producer Everett Marshburn has believed in the power of public television to tell important stories. Everett said he is proud and

humbled to have been selected for this honor. “I am proud because it is a comprehensive honor celebrating a career, not just a project; and humble because I know none of us achieves this honor alone, my implied success is because of a number of people who share their time and talent with me to make meaningful television, “ Everett explained. “When my name was called as being the first person to be admitted to the Gold Circle, I was stunned. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I couldn’t speak for a few seconds. This is an incredible honor that I will spend the rest of my career trying to live up to.” Induction into the Gold Circle will be February 11, 2024. Milwaukee PBS’ BLACK NOUVEAU airs the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM on Milwaukee PBS 10.1 or watch on demand at milwaukeepbs.org.

On the LOCAL SCENE ON TV 10THIRTYSIX™ The important conversation around mental health continues with a new series called HOW WE HEAL. The series will explore education, resources and real-life stories to help shed light on our mental health and the healing process. ADELANTE talks with Mariana Rodriguez, the director of the Latina Resource Center, about how to prevent relationships that lead to domestic violence. We talk to Jessica Solt who has a rare mutation known as hereditary diffuse gastric cancer and Lily Alvarado from the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation talks about loans for women and minority businesses. BLACK NOUVEAU Rael the Artist, whose specialty is Hip-Hop gospel, is featured. Journalist Joanne Williams discusses her documentary THE EXCHANGE: KAUKAUNA & KING 50 YEARS LATER which airs later this month on Milwaukee PBS 10.1. THE ARTS PAGE Viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at The Wolves. This coming-of-age drama from Renaissance Theaterworks is insightful, energetic, and a pure delight. We meet the cast and crew behind the Pulitzer Prize finalist play.

ON DIGITAL RHYTHM CAFE MKE Look for new performers in late February. Featured first is Rayven, an artist based in the Midwest. She was heavily influenced by gospel icons such as Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin, and Tasha Cobbs. Milwaukee PBS’ digital-first series Rhythm Cafe MKE recognizes Milwaukee artists. Watch at milwaukeepbs.org/RCMKE or with the PBS App. SPEAKING OF … Milwaukee PBS producers Alexandria Mack and Scottie Lee Meyers focus this season on a growing crisis too hard to ignore: a crisis of domestic violence. The new season is called THE MISSING PEACE and is supported by the International Women's Media Foundation and will be available in late February. Learn more about the podcast at milwaukeepbs.org/missing-peace. Please visit milwaukeepbs.org for complete program schedule.

PALEO SLEUTHS

The one-hour program PALEO SLEUTHS explores a series of paleontology excavations that showcase the changing landscape and animal life on America's Great Plains – beginning 34 million years ago with the Ice Age. Through interviews with paleontologists, modern-day footage of excavations, historic re-enactments, archival photographs, and animations with 3-D models that bring pre-historic figures to life, the program features fossil discoveries in the Great Plains that challenge popular understanding of the origins of mammals. 2/7, 10PM 10.1

GOSPEL with Henry Louis Gates Jr. to Premiere February 12-13 at 8PM on Channel 10.1

P

BS announced GOSPEL, a new four-hour docuseries that explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song. from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., premiering in February 2024 on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS App. GOSPEL reunites acclaimed Harvard scholar and documentarian Gates with directors Stacey L. Holman and Shayla Harris after recently teaming up on MAKING BLACK AMERICA: THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE. The series will premiere on February 12 and 13, with a special companion concert premiering February 9. From the blues to hiphop, African Americans have been the driving force of sonic innovation for over a century. Musical styles come and go, but there is one sound that has been a constant source of strength, courage, and wisdom from the pulpit to the choir lofts on any given Sunday: the gospel. In GOSPEL, Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and Photo Courtesy of McGee Media

African American Research, speaks with dozens of clergymen, singers and scholars about their connection to the music that has transcended its origins and now spreads “the good word” all around the world. The series features interviews with notable names including Dionne Warwick, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, Rev. Otis Moss III, professor Michael Eric Dyson, and aweinspiring musical performances of Gospel favorites “Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus,” “Total Praise,” and others from talents including The Belle Singers, Cory Henry, Celisse, and more. GOSPEL is more than the soundtrack of the African American experience, “it’s the beating heart and soul,” said Gates. “From the Great Migration to today, the history of Black gospel music and preaching is one of constant movement, and it’s long been a dream of mine to bring it to public television. We’re blessed to have such outstanding partners in delivering this series and concert at a time in our nation when the need for Gospel’s transcendent,

healing powers is so great.” Stacey L. Holman and Shayla Harris, the series producers and directors, said, “It was such an honor to reunite with the incredible team that produced THE BLACK CHURCH on another powerful examination of Black spiritual expression for PBS. For centuries, the sacred sounds of gospel music and Black preaching have testified to God’s goodness and grace while embracing the rhythms and riffs of blues, jazz and hip-hop. They were the way that African Americans found their voice and their power in a strange land and have resonated far beyond the church’s walls. By weaving intimate interviews with dynamic live gospel performances throughout the series, we want our viewers to fully experience and be energized by this uniquely African American art form of prayer, praise and promise.” “I’m so grateful to have been able to work again with the incredible team of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Stacey L. Holman, and Shayla Harris,” remarked executive producer Dyllan Continued on page 27

BEYOND THE POWDER: THE LEGACY OF THE FIRST WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY AIR RACE

This documentary film follows the female pilots of the 2014 Air Race Classic racers as they make their way across the country, while telling the story of the first women's cross-country air race of 1929, also known as the Powder Puff Derby. The first Women’s Air Derby in 1929—which was comprised of 20 women, including Amelia Earhart—was flown from Santa Monica to the finish line in Cleveland, kicking off the National Air Races. The country watched as these brave women made history flying cross-country, breaking into a competition that was thought to be for men only. They encountered sabotage, death, and all the difficulties of flying at the dawn of aviation. Today the Powder Puff Derby continues as the Air Race Classic, carrying out the legacy and spirit of the original racers. 2/20, 10PM 10.1

GOSPEL with Henry Louis Gates Jr. to Premiere February 12-13 Continued from page 11

McGee. “They’ve created yet another impactful and important series that invites audiences to enjoy and celebrate the sounds of gospel.” PBS’s Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, Sylvia Bugg said “GOSPEL celebrates a treasured genre of music that has influenced African American culture and communities, and we are excited for audiences to join Professor Gates on this joyous exploration into a very unique and ardent art form. This four-hour series also expands upon PBS’s efforts to engage communities across America, helping to build greater awareness and understanding.” GOSPEL concert showrunner, Kristen V. Carter, said, “I am elated to partner with McGee Media, Done + Dusted and Friends at Work to acknowledge, honor and celebrate the rich legacy of Gospel music and the contributions that this genre has made throughout history and culture. We are excited to bring gospel and secular artists

together for this incredibly inspiring celebration!” Throughout its four hours, GOSPEL gives a look at the history of Black religious music and preaching, showcasing the symbiotic relationship of words and song present in any Black church. The series examines the origin of Black gospel music, which blended the sacred spirituals with the blues tradition and soared to new heights during the Great Migration. This music served as an outlet for the anger and frustration of living as a Black person in America, which remains true today. The series also explores the evolution of preaching styles over time, and the impact of class, gender, cultural innovations, and consumer technologies shaped the development of gospel since its conception.
