Advice to keep you financially healthy, wealthy and wise. Summer 2016 | No. 165

Quick Tips to Keep Your Money Safe Debit card fraud isn’t breaking news. It has been around almost as long as the first debit card, but recently the amount of fraud has been rising. At Unison, we want to do everything we can to keep our members safe. When we notice large amounts of fraud occurring from one merchant or location, we will restrict signature transactions for that merchant until the fraud subsides to reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions to your account. Transactions can still be completed using your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you attempt a transaction and your card is declined, try the transaction again using your PIN. We have put together some quick tips you can take to be proactive about keeping your funds safe and preventing fraudulent activity on your account.

1. Periodically check your account balance and transactions and review all statements. If you have access to online banking, check your transactions and account balances frequently. If there are transactions that seem suspicious, contact us immediately. It is also good practice, especially if you do not have access to online banking, to review your statements for accuracy and fraudulent transactions. 2. When using an ATM, always check for skimmers. An ATM skimmer is a device placed over the card reader, ATM keypad or both that is made to replicate the look of the original ATM. When the card is inserted, the skimmer collects the information to be used later. As you enter your PIN number the keypad records that information as well.

Always check for a skimming device before using an ATM. Look at the keypad for anything out of the ordinary such as raised buttons or edges that seem out of place. If the card reader is raised from the ATM, softly tug on it. If it moves or you feel there is an external device attached, contact the financial institution with the information and do not use the ATM. 3. Choose a PIN number that can’t be easily guessed. Never use the last four digits of your Social Security number, your phone number, your birthdate, your anniversary or any sequence of four numbers that can be easily guessed such as 1234, 4321, 0000, 1111, etc. as a PIN number.

Creating Lifelong Saving Habits Teaching your child to save from an early age builds financial habits that can be carried throughout life, and that’s why Unison makes a point to celebrate Youth Week each year. Every family chooses what method to use to teach children how to manage money such as giving an allowance on a regular basis, giving allowance when chores are completed or not giving an allowance. One method includes giving your child a regular allowance and splitting it into three jars; one for sharing, one for spending and one for saving.

see something later they want more, they will have to learn from the decision and wait until their next allowance to purchase the additional item. Sharing: The sharing jar teaches your child to save money for gifts or donations to a charitable organization. The child can choose the organization to donate to, or the money can be used to give a gift for someone’s birthday, for Christmas or another event. Spending: The spending jar contains money that your child can spend immediately on anything they choose. It’s important to give the child the freedom to choose how and when to spend this money. If they spend it all at once and

Savings: The saving jar can be used to save up for a particular toy or goal that is realistic and reachable in a short period of time. If the timeframe gets too long your child can lose interest in the toy and savings process. The savings jar teaches the lesson that the child can’t have everything all at once, and some things they really want will need to be saved for.

Teaching children to work on a budget helps them be successful no matter what financial situation they find themselves in once they leave the house - from college days to retirement and beyond.

With these three tips in mind, you can continue to build your child’s financial knowledge as he or she gets older.

Five Area Students Receive John Aman Memorial Scholarship Unison Credit Union proudly presented five outstanding students with the John Aman Memorial Scholarship this year. Each winner received a $1000 scholarship to assist with furthering their education. The awards are given in memory of John Aman, the first CEO of Unison Credit Union. His commitment to the credit union industry and the community were evident through his passion for volunteerism and putting the needs of our members first. Winners were selected based on the ability to demonstrate the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” through volunteerism and giving back to their communities. The following students received the John Aman Memorial Scholarship for 2016: Ethan Van Thiel, Kimberly High School, has given back to the community by volunteering through organizations such as the Fox Valley YMCA, Salvation Army, Miracle League of the Fox Cities and Fox Valley Pop Warner Football. Ethan’s character shows through the lessons he has learned while helping the community, including a story of fixing an elderly couple’s yard fountain without being asked. “I learned that day that it is the little things that can make the biggest imprint. Something as simple as fixing a decorative fountain can have such a huge impact on a couple and change their outlook on life.” Ethan plans to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering in fall to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering. Micaela Fafnis, Kaukauna High School, has given back to the community through participation in many

organizations such as the Salvation Army, Wisconsin Historical Society, Community Blood Center and Bridges of Appleton. Micaela will attend University of Wisconsin Green Bay to pursue a degree in a S.T.E.M. field of study. Hannah Dornfeld, Little Chute Career Pathways Academy, has completed many hours of service at various organizations in the Fox Valley area including the Boys and Girls Club, United Way Youth Board and Little Chute High School Mustang Mentoring Program. Hannah will be attending University of Wisconsin Madison in fall to pursue a degree in Project Management. Samuel Hubbard, Wrightstown High School, has given back to the area community through participation in many organizations including the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Feed My Starving Children, Red Cross Blood Drive and Giving Hands Thankful Hearts. “It was amazing watch so many people from

so many different styles of life join forces to put together such a powerful and successful fundraiser to help end cancer,” said Samuel about the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Samuel will attend University of Wisconsin Madison to pursue a degree in Biology. Justin Knapp, Union Grove High School, has served his community through many organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Caledonia Historical Society, Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization and Monday Night Hot Meal Program. Justin plans to attend University of Wisconsin Madison to pursue a degree in Computer Science. Congratulations to each scholarship recipient, and we wish you nothing but success in your future! Keep an eye out in December for the John Aman Memorial Scholarship application information.
