welcome How do you stay on track with your health goals after the excitement of a new year fades? Mix it up! Variety is one of the keys to rekindling the energy needed to reach and sustain goals. By trying a new class, going on an outdoor adventure, and changing up your routine, you do your body a favor by giving it a challenge. Keep the resolve of your goals alive by engaging your body and mind in novel ways. You can do it, and we are here to support you. Gail Mametsuka, Assistant Director, UCSF Fitness & Recreation

5 Keys for Fitness Be Realistic Make sure your fitness goals fit your real life, and set the bar accordingly. If your goals are unreachable, you’ll get frustrated and quit. If you set the bar too low, you won’t get anywhere. Work with a trainer to help with goal setting.

Bakar Bootcamp page 9

Create a Plan Schedule time for the activities that support your health and stick to it. Prepare healthy meals weekly, pack your gym bag, sign up for classes, and take advantage of all the convenient services that support your goals. Partner Up When you commit to others, you’re almost guaranteed to follow through. Workout with a buddy, team up with a trainer, attend group fitness classes, join a league, or plan fun and healthy activities with friends. Embrace Variety The body and mind thrive on novel experiences. By trying new activities and adding in a little variety, your body will respond kindly. With hundreds of classes, trips, leagues, and machines-there’s no excuse for staying in a rut.

Restore Body & Mind Making time to slow down, rest, and restore the body and mind is critical, (not optional), for total fitness. Without regular stretching, massage, and other relaxation practices, you’ll burn out or get injured. Gentle care for yourself equals better fitness.

our mission is to enrich the human spirit, quality of life, and community at UCSF

message from the chancellor To stay fit and healthy, try something new! Join a walking club, take a Pilates class at the on-site gyms at Parnassus and Mission Bay, go for a run in Golden Gate Park before or after work. Also, work out with others—a friend, your spouse, or your kids. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, UCSF Chancellor

explore the friendly waters youth aquatics at Mission Bay Be a part of our long tradition of fun, education, and safety. We have coached children to swim and gain confidence in the water for more than 50 years. Our programs are designed to meet the needs of children with a wide range of abilities. With fun names like Starfish, Seals, and Dolphins, your little ones will be more excited than ever to advance their aquatic skills. Come test the water and make a splash with us! See pages 17-18 for the group lesson schedule.

Parent and Child Lessons Please note that parent participation is required for Levels A and B. Level A Ages 6 months to 2 years • Little or no previous water experience Level B Ages 18 months to 3 years • Have two or more previous water sessions, or • Submerge reluctantly/not at all, or • Require flotation support at all times, or • Would benefit from parental presence and support

Pre-School Lessons Ages 3 to 5 years; no parent participation.
Your children will advance through the following three levels as their skills progress:

Starfish Children start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water. Children will start to learn the most elementary aquatic skills, which they’ll continue to build on as they progress through the other levels.

Seahorse Lessons builds on the basic aquatic skills learned in Starfish, and give children further success with fundamental aquatic skills performed to a slightly more advanced degree. This level marks the beginning of independent aquatic locomotion skills.

Frog The objective is to build on the skills previously learned by providing additional guided practice of basic aquatic skills, at slightly more proficient performance levels and greater distances. Skills in this level are performed independently. Fees

Children’s Swim Lessons Our Youth Aquatics program is designed to meet the needs of children ages 6-15 with a wide range of abilities, from initial water adjustment to advanced skills and techniques. Lessons for ages 6 months to 5 years can be found on page 15. Guppy The objective is for children to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, while helping them feel comfortable in the water. Children will learn positive attitudes, good swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water at this level.

Sea Turtle Children further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back, laying the foundation for future strokes.

Angelfish Your child works on coordinating the front and back crawl, along with survival floating. Scissors and dolphin kicks, along with the fundamentals of treading water, are introduced. Seal The focus is on improving swimming skills and increasing endurance. This level continues to build on the sidestroke and introduces the breaststroke and butterfly, along with the basics of turning at a wall.

Dolphin Performance and refinement of all the strokes are emphasized with a focus on increasing distances. Flip turns are also introduced.

Shark Students refine their strokes and learn to swim with more ease, proficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.
