These classes are for recreational purposes only; you can learn a new skill, fine tune an old one, or simply keep in shape. There are no pressures, exams or grades - just relax and enjoy! Classes meet once or twice weekly. All GauchoREC classes are open to UCSB students, faculty, staff, alumni, affiliates and community members. Holidays have been taken into consideration and most class dates have been extended to provide makeup sessions.

Classes do not meet May 23 - 25. UCSB students are eligible for a reduced fee. In order to receive the student rate, be sure you use your uMail address when you log in to your online account. Professional Rescuer teaches responses to bleeding and soft tissue and muscular skeletal injuries in adults, children, and infants. The course also covers how to use an AED on an adult or child victim of cardiac arrest, and how to use personal protective equipment to stop the spread of diseases. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Bobbi Houghton

This course will teach the fundamentals needed for all levels of swimming instruction. WSI certification is often required to teach swimming lessons and for summer employment at camps, athletic clubs and recreation departments. Health Coach Certification Prep Course

The American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard and lifeguard candidates with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Swimming ability required; swim prerequisite details on website. Upon course completion, participants receive ARC Lifeguard Training and ARC CPR certificates (both valid for two years). California’s wilderness with camping, backpacking, canyoneering trips and more outdoor adventures. Take your skills and thirst for competition to the next level by joining the Second Annual Gaucho Gauntlet or 8th Annual Climbing Competition. Adventure Programs is proud to offer surfing lessons as its newest instructional course this season. The course is open to students, faculty, and community members of all skill levels. The first few members who register get free wetsuit rentals, and others enrolled in the course receive a half off discount on surfboard and wetsuit rentals. Another brand new AP offering is the Women’s Adventure series of trips and classes. These programs aim to inspire and support women to experience the great outdoors with other thrill seeking females. The first trip this quarter is backpacking in Sequoia National Park. Future events in the series will include camping, kayaking, climbing trips and more. Looking to go on your own expedition? The Adventure Rental Center has everything you need from tents and sleeping bags to wetsuits and kayaks. Leave it to us to get your gear in check so you can camp, backpack, or surf your heart out.
