Recreation Center Memberships All UCSB students enrolled in 12 or more credits automatically have a membership to the Recreation Center through student fees. We also offer a variety of memberships that can be purchased in one month, three month or annual increments. Membership includes access to the Recreation Center including pools, fitness centers, indoor climbing, activity courts, locker rentals and equipment checkout.

Sustainable Living We use intentional operational practices in our thoughtfully designed facilities such as solar panels, reclaimed water, artificial turf fields, hand dryers, natural lighting, optional-flow toilets, and waterless urinals to reduce the impact on the environment. The Recreation Center has paved the way for other energy-efficient campus recreation centers across the country.

Community Impact Giving Back We love contributing to our beautiful community which provides so much for those who live here. The Department of Recreation gives back in a variety of ways:
3rd Grade Swim to College Program
Helping Our Neighbors As one of the designated emergency evacuation shelters for Santa Barbara County, the Department of Recreation opened the Recreation Center doors for 18 days in December 2017 for Thomas Fire evacuees. The American Red Cross set up a shelter on the Multi-Activity Court and provided beds, blankets and food. Recreation staff worked around the clock managing facilities and assisting the Red Cross to ensure members of the community had a safe place to escape the natural disaster.

Beach Wheelchair Thanks to a generous grant from the UCSB Coastal Fund, a beach wheelchair is available for use at Campus Point. The chair is free to use and no UCSB affiliation is required. Visit our website for checkout procedures.
SMERF The UCSB Jack Canfield Student Medical Emergency Relief Fund (SMERF) was created to assist UCSB students experiencing medical emergencies. The fund ensures students receive support as they work to attain their educational goals after unexpected crises.
Sustainable Practices The Recreation Center has earned a LEED EB (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, Existing Building) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council through facility initiatives and operational practices.

Gaucho REC
Recreation & Exercise Classes
Gaucho REC (Recreation & Exercise Classes) offers a wide variety of classes so you can learn a new skill, fine tune an old one, or simply keep in shape. Most classes meet once or twice a week.
How to Register Gaucho REC classes occur on a quarterly schedule. You can register for classes through our online registration portal found on our website or in person at the Recreation Customer Service Center. Membership to the Recreation Center does not include access to Gaucho REC classes.
Gaucho REC Instructors You will be encouraged and motivated by our highly knowledgeable Gaucho REC instructors. Gaucho REC classes are taught by professionals with specialized skill sets and experience in the class topic. Our instructors love teaching and are passionate about what it is they teach. We hope you come away from attending one of our classes inspired and interested in a new activity you will enjoy for a lifetime.
Who can participate? UCSB students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members can take part in Gaucho REC classes! Age restrictions and pre requisites apply to some classes. We also offer a wide array of youth programs (see page 21 for more information).

Recreation & Exercise Classes Certification Classes We offer a range of nationally recognized certification classes that teach safety and survival skills such as CPR/ FirstAID/AED, Wilderness Medicine, Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instruction as well as Babysitting.
Arts & Crafts Recreation is so much more than getting your pulse rate high, sometimes you need to feed the right side of your brain. Let your creativity flourish in an arts & crafts class. We offer an array of pottery classes in our fully equipped pottery studios taught by master artisans with over 50 years of experience. Weaving class students have the opportunity to learn fiber arts from our knowledgeable and experienced instructor who teaches beginners how to get started and aid more experienced weavers with mastering new techniques. We have over 15 looms participants can use to work on their projects. You are sure to leave these classes with new skills and beautiful works of art!
Dance Participants in our dance classes will learn basic techniques and get comfortable with specific dance styles while getting a great workout. From Hip-Hop to Ballroom, and everything in between you can learn how to heat up the dance floor. Dancing is a great way to learn about a different culture and burn some calories in a fun environment.
Enrichment Classes We believe that recreation is more than being outdoors or working out. Our enrichment classes represent a wide variety of recreational interests from learning about essential oils and herbs to communicating with sign language. Music
If you are UCSB Faculty or Staff and eager to get out of the office, we offer lunchtime classes that will get you moving! Of course you're invited to participate before and after work too! The Fit For Life and L.I.F.E. Circuit classes mix cardio and strength exercises for a full body workout.
If you have dreams of being a rock star but have never picked up an instrument, start with one of our music classes such as Guitar or Drumming. You will learn the fundamentals first and will be creating music in no time.
Martial Arts & Self Defense Martial Arts classes have been taught through the UCSB Department of Recreation for over 50 years. These classes are fantastic for participants looking to exercise while building confidence and training the body, mind and spirit to work as one. Many of the classes focus on self-defense, coordination and building cultural awareness about regions where the traditional art began. Classes include: Aikido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, Filipino Kali & Eskrima, Kendo, Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do.
Sports Are you interested in a new sport but still need to learn the basics or can’t afford expensive equipment? If so, Gaucho REC sports classes are for you! Our sailing lessons at the Santa Barbara Harbor are the best deal in town and a brand new fleet of Learn to Sail boats was launched in 2018. There has never been a better time to sail. Other popular sport based classes include tennis, indoor rowing and Olympic weightlifting. Santa Barbara offers picture perfect views for playing sports so get off the couch and in the game by learning the basics with us.
Mind & Body Yoga, Pilates and massage are the key components to our Mind & Body class offerings. All three practices add much needed balance to one’s life both literally and figuratively. We offer a variety of yoga and Pilates classes that will strengthen your core and calm your mind as well as massage classes where students learn the fundamentals of therapeutic massage therapy. recreation.ucsb.edu | 9
Fitness & Wellness Group Fitness & Cycling Group Fitness and Cycling classes are designed to offer participants a well-rounded exercise experience. Choose from a wide variety of classes with the Group Fit All Access Pass ranging from energetic cardio such as Zumba or Cardio Kickboxing to strength classes such as H.I.I.T. or Chisel & Sculpt. Our certified instructors will ensure that you get the most out of your resistance training exercises through emphasis on proper form, technique and intensity. The Group Fit All Access Pass gives you unlimited access to all of our Group Fitness classes so that you can try a new class every week or stick with your favorite class throughout the quarter!
Fit Squad Fit Squad classes are perfect if you have a busy schedule. The Fit Squad offers 15-minute group fitness classes held in a few convenient locations throughout campus. Fit Squad classes are free to participants.

The Wellness & Fitness Institute is a human performance lab designed to provide education, experience and health consultations utilizing various assessment tools and tests. Every UCSB student is eligible for a free comprehensive fitness and health consultation per academic year. Students can visit the Wellness & Fitness Institute (Room 1502 at the Recreation Center) for a walk-in consultation during operating hours. Visit our website for current hours.
The WorkStrong Program is a UC-wide initiative that provides specialized health and wellness programs for UC employees who have been injured on the job. WorkStrong is a comprehensive 12-week program designed to reduce the risk of further injury and promote overall health and wellness. The program is free to participants and designed to fit each individual’s needs. Physician referral required.

Sport Clubs What is a Sport Club? The UCSB Sport Club program is comprised of student-run teams that compete at regional and national levels. While clubs are organized for the primary purpose of competition, our program emphasizes skill development, team-building and socialization. All clubs practice regularly and travel to other colleges and universities to compete. New participants of all skill levels are welcome! UCSB students who are full-time and in good academic standing are eligible to participate in the Sport Club program. Prospective athletes can visit our website to get in contact with team officers.

Sport Club athletes have exclusive access to a private weight room at the Athletic Performance Center (APC) located in Rob Gym. The APC provides strength and conditioning services designed to enhance athletic performance and decrease probability of injury. APC staff and student interns help Sport Club athletes to train consistently, sensibly, and systematically in a safe, clean and professional environment.
The UCSB Sport Club Athletic Training Program gives Sport Club athletes the opportunity to receive professional help from certified Athletic Trainers and student interns for sports-related injuries. The Department of Recreation was a pioneer in offering athletic training services to Sport Club athletes and has become an aspirational standard for universities across the country. The program offers athletic training services on-site for most Sport Club games and events held on campus. Student Athletic Training internships are also available.

ADVENTURE CLIMBING CENTER Climbers of all levels are welcome in our Adventure Climbing Center which includes a 30ft climbing wall, bouldering section and educational area. Learn new techniques in clinics and classes held every quarter. Free to all UCSB students (not including shoes and harness). Open daily from 11:30am until 30 minutes before the Recreation Center closes.
Adventure Ropes Course Our ropes course offers a variety of challenges, obstacles and activities designed to bring participants closer together and expand personal limits within a supportive environment. The Adventure Ropes Course is great for events, team building, and private parties.
Mobile Climbing Wall We bring the adventure to you with our 26-foot Mobile Climbing Wall featuring realistic rock features and four auto belay climbing stations. Rent the Mobile Climbing Wall for your upcoming event and look for us at local community festivals as well.
Outdoor Gear Rentals Going on an adventure but don’t have the gear? We have the outdoor equipment you need for camping, backpacking, kayaking, surfing, SUP, climbing and more! Visit the Adventure Rental Center (located at the Recreation Center) or Campus Point Rental Center to rent gear. Climbing gear can also be rented at the Adventure Climbing Center. Interested in unlimited outdoor gear rentals all year long? Purchase an Adventure Pass for access to all of Adventure Programs’ rental centers. Special Events The Department of Recreation hosts numerous special events that bring students, faculty, staff, community members and alumni together for a fun-filled, unforgettable experience.
Climbing Competition Adventure Programs has hosted the Top Rope Climbing Competition for over ten years. Climbers of all levels are welcome to challenge themselves on routes in the Adventure Climbing Center.
Mindful Monday Find your center at this quarterly event. Participants are encouraged to practice the art of mindfulness by being fully present in the moment. We collaborate with UCSB Health & Wellness to feature a variety of mindful activities such as meditation, tai chi, yoga, sound healing and more.
Reel Rock Dodgeball Tournament In memory of Alec Torchon, Dodge, duck and dive is a night of intense rivalry, athleticism and costumes at the annual Dodgeball Tournament. We collaborate with UCSB Life of the Party to create a fun tournament and festive atmosphere each year in Rob Gym.
Hallowheels It gets spooky at the Recreation Center around Halloween because Gauchos show up to roller skate in their best costumes. Enjoy a night of skating, a movie on the big screen, a DJ, pumpkin painting, free food, and more. The Reel Rock Film Tour brings the best in climbing and adventure films to local audiences across the globe. Join Adventure Programs for a showing of Reel Rock at the IV Theatre every year with prize giveaways, contests and more.
UC Walks Take a walk around campus with the Department of Recreation at the annual UC Walks. UCSB Faculty and Staff are encouraged to walk for good health at this UC-wide event.
Warm Up at the Rec The Department of Recreation and UCSB Office of Student Life partner each year to host a night of rollerskating at the Multi-Activity Court with music, a movie on the big screen, food, and prizes. The event features free food and great music so Gauchos can skate into the spring quarter.
Turkey Trot Runners have enjoyed breathtaking views of the UCSB lagoon and oceanfront at the Turkey Trot 5K/10K for over 40 years. The race is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Yoga Nights We invite you to get zenned out of your mind every quarter at Yoga Nights. We partner with UCSB Life of the Party to hold an evening yoga class for students to de-stress and recharge This not-so-typical yoga class features an interactive social and giveaways.
FUN & FITNESS FESTIVAL The Fun & Fitness Festival is the Department of Recreation’s annual showcase event that takes place during UCSB’s Week of Welcome every fall quarter. The festival showcases all that Recreation offers including fitness, sport and adventure demos. Meet Sport Clubs, compete in Intramural games, watch live performances, learn about upcoming events and more! Attendees also get tons of free giveaways and food from our sponsors!

Aquatics If you are looking for a relaxing activity or an all body workout, visit our pools! Swim laps, take a plunge off the diving board, play water polo or just enjoy the spa during our drop-in swim for adults. Classes such as kayaking and SCUBA also take place in the pool area. Our pool deck has lounge chairs, a grass area, shaded tables and a beautiful view of the mountains!

Youth Programs The Department of Recreation has provided quality youth programs for the Santa Barbara community for over 40 years and serve thousands of youth annually. In addition to Youth Swim Lessons, we offer multiple camps each summer and birthday party opportunities!
Jr. Lifeguards Jr. Lifeguards is more than just a summer camp! Participants are trained by lifeguards on topics including oceanography, first aid, CPR, water rescue techniques and lifesaving methods. Ages 9-15.
Summer Day Camp Your little ones will have a summer of fun in our weekly camp sessions. Campers enjoy activities including the Adventure Ropes Course, swimming, gymnastics, campus explorations, and more! Ages 5-14.
Surf & Kayak Camp Not only do campers participate in activities like surfing, SUP, snorkeling and beach volleyball but they also have the opportunity to interact with marine life and learn more about our oceans. Ages 9-15.
