Editor’s page Watch the birdy!! Well the swallows are back! So is the warmth too. Every shade of green has changed the canvass and the short days seem a distant memory. Funny how time seems to speed up or slow down depending on our perception: Years fly by, yet winters are long. So intern we feel that summers are short and with the pressures of life it can slip by all too fast. I remember as a boy feeling like the summer hols lasted forever and now it feels like Xmas comes around every 3 weeks. Perhaps as a boy I had no concept of time other than how late I could stay out before I was in trouble. Living in the moment came natural back then! Staring up at a pair of swallows that are now nesting in the shed, watching them dance with the wind, I slip into the moment where time does not exist. Lost in the now!

It is also time for a new raft of exhibitions at the Balman Gallary on page 42.

Where for a brief moment there is a dynamic flow of connection and time is irrelevant.

Queens hall at Hexham has a whole new line up too. See their full listings on page 52.

Thanks to Mother Nature for providing these moments of peace!

Finally I would like to draw your attention to Spirit of Africa charity based in Prudhoe. In a world of charity shops and huge organisation it is lovely to see a small team making a huge difference on the ground in Africa. See their story on page 26.

Getting out and about is a great stress buster and the Tyne Rivers Trust team are looking for volunteers to help along our river. Check out pages 22-23. If ever a man understood living in the moment, it’s Roger Clegg. He has captured the Tyne Valleys beauty for many years and we appreciate his offerings for our publication. See his work on page 16-17 and an article about Steel Rigg on page 43. He also has an exhibition at the Forum Cinema in Hexham until the end of May and is well worth a visit.

Let the clocks stop and enjoy the moment!!

M ic hael Doughty

Julian Thompson from Anderson & Garland sheds some light on whether antiques represent a good investment, page 36 – appears all a question of timing.

Ryton

Jack & Jo’s

Hedgefield Farm main road between Stella and Ryton Here at Jack & Jo’s, we’re passionate about growing, opening from March 1st right through until the end of September. We began our business almost four years ago and in that time, we have begun to bloom. Located in Ryton, we have three access routes into the farm, with the main one being just off the main road at Ryton, turning into Hedgefield Farm. This year, we are looking to become even more accessible by installing a disabled ramp. While manageable at present, we know this can be improved. From bedding to basket plants, and patio to perennials, Jack and Jo’s are here to meet all of your gardening needs. We also stock a range of trees, shrubs and climbers as well as bamboos, alpines and herbs. To enable you to make the most of your gardening purchases, we currently have a range of quirky pots, troughs and baskets. In addition, we have a spectacular offer on compost bags. Pop along and pick up three for £12 and kick start your gardening season. Why not take advantage of our potting service while you’re here or bring along your own pots and pay only for plants and additional compost? We love to offer people the chance to come and work alongside us as we nurture our plants and trees. We particularly encourage those with learning difficulties, ill health and injuries to come and spend some time potting and planting. Whether for an hour or a whole day, we are delighted to welcome both children and adults, along with their parents and carers, to get involved in this project. We have received very positive feedback, with many guests finding this a very peaceful environment to be in, and enjoying the benefits it gives to others. Despite our gardening season running from March to the end of September, we continue these community projects all year round. Other activities include painting garden furniture, washing pots and planters and other jobs as we prepare for the new season to come round.

Large Car Park Debit Cards Taken Parking alongside tunnels for easy access In winter we open 1 Dec for Holly Wreaths and Christmas Trees, orders taken from end of November

Even our flowers are happy!

Currently, Jack and Jo’s is run by an incredible team of volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to you all, we really appreciate and value all that you bring and contribute to the nurseries. As we plough forward, we are keen to invest and develop our facilities such as install toilets, clear land, build new fencing etc. We also are seeking relevant grant funding to support us in our new ventures. If you are interested in getting involved in any of the above, please do contact us. We would love to have you on board! While we continue to grow, we have plans to turn the farm buildings into dorms suitable for Scouts and other groups who may like to spend time here. In turn, these facilities could also be used to support respite care activities and projects. As we move further into spring, we warmly invite you to come and visit us at Jack and Jo’s. Whether you’re picking up a plant for yourself, or a gift for someone else, we’re sure to have the perfect item to help your garden grow. Don’t forget, we also offer delivery service within 5 miles and this is free on orders above £25!

Our Director, Susan Mackirdy, has set herself a big challenge: to cycle 204 miles alongside the Tyne over three days at the end of May – a lot further than she has ever cycled before. Do have a look at her blog (susanmackirdy.wordpress.com) to see how many times ‘cake’ is mentioned!

ackirdy, has set herself a big challenge: to cycle 204 miles alongside ays at the end of May – a lot further than she has ever cycled before. blog (susanmackirdy.wordpress.com) to see how many times ‘cake’ is Tyne Tidal Challenge

Please come and join us for our main summer fundraising event - walking the tidal reach of the Tyne, on Saturday 21stJune 2014. Choose from three distances: 23 miles from Wylam, 13 miles from NewcastleQuayside, 4 miles from South Shields (including the ferry across the river). All walks finish at Tynemouth, where we will have a celebration for the walkers and supporters. It’s £15 for adults to enter and all of these entries will receive a 10th anniversary T-shirt. If you raise more than £100 in sponsorship, we will refund your entry fee on request. It’s only £1 for under16s and there will be a prize for the child that raises most sponsorship! Deadline 8th June Please check our website at www.tyneriverstrust.org/events for details on how you can register to join our walk and set up your own fundraising page.

The NEXT Ten Years: What Remains to be Done? Anyone who has witnessed the vast improvement in the quality of the Tyne over the last 60 years would be forgiven for thinking it is ‘fixed’. It has gone from a dirty, smelly, heavily polluted river, particularly in its tidal reaches, to a river that everyone can enjoy, with its regenerated quayside, wild open spaces and opportunities for canoeing, rowing, swimming and fishing. Water quality is hugely improved and the Tyne is now back to being the best salmon river in England. The biggest improvements to the Tyne, like all rivers, have come about as a result of more stringent environmental laws. But legislation doesn’t tackle all of the problems. Our work demonstrates that many issues are too small to show up on the legislative radar. Working closely with local communities, we target specific improvements, eg silt and erosion reduction, fish passage improvements and invasive species management, alongside education programmes. We are concerned that school-age children do not receive the practical riverside learning that allows them to really understand how rivers work and how important they are. Please help us to help the Tyne for the NEXT ten years!

Spirit of Africa The Birth of the Spirit of Africa Charity: Carol Tree’s Story At just 18, my daughter Lauren went to a South African orphanage to work as a volunteer. During a visit to Lauren, I went to meet the children she lived with and was asked if I wanted to meet an injured Zulu woman who was being cared for by the orphanage’s care in the community project. The small, round mud hut was on the outskirts of the village. There I was introduced to the woman, who had suffered severe burns to her breasts. She had been cooking on an open fire in her hut. The pot of hot water hanging over the fire had accidently tipped over her. So severe were her injuries that she could no longer breastfeed her small baby. All that was in the hut for the mother and her three poorly-dressed children was one bed, throw, chair and cooking pot. Without the support of the charity to provide milk for her baby and a monthly food package, they’d have starved. My flight back to UK was leaving within hours. As I washed my filthy feet in a sink in the airport’s ladies’ toilets, tears streamed down my face. For me, it was impossible to see what I’d seen and do nothing. It was to be several years before I could begin fundraising and with the help of friends Annie Barr and Margaret Beachamp, the Spirit of Africa Children’s Charity was started.

Fundraising Since 2010, Spirit of Africa has raised money through events, from a sponsored Scafell climb to wine tasting. This year, we have our annual ball at Slaley Hall, people will be running the GNR, Carol is doing a sky dive and we’ll be yarn bombing a tree!

Ithembalihle School and Foster Home Spirit of Africa’s funds have built a pre-school for 40 children in Sankontshe village, in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. Our project is called Ithembalihle, ‘place of hope’. Six volunteers, two of them teachers from Prudhoe Castle First School, gave up annual leave to partake in the build. We employ a local teacher and nursery assistant. This July, our two volunteer teachers are returning to share UK teaching methods with teachers in South Africa. At Ithembalihle, we have a foster care home for 19 children, cared for by local women. Older children are housed in a purpose-built dormitory - babies sleep with Thandewi, who heads up the project.

Trustee Carol recently returned from visiting Ithembahile, where she organized a beach trip. ‘Many of the children had never been to the beach,’ Carol explains. ‘The only way to get them into the sea to play was by example! I hadn’t taken a swimming costume so walking into the sea fully-clothed caused great amusement – the children soon wanted to join me. When I saw the children laughing and screaming with pleasure, I knew Spirit of Africa was making a difference.’ Because of our supporters’ generosity, we make a difference to 19 homeless and 40 village children, who now get an education putting them on the path to escaping poverty. We can show you where every penny of your money gets spent.

The Tyne Valley Thanksgiving Tree We need £15 000 per annum to care for our children. We have a unique idea to raise money, directly involving you. This October, Spirit of Africa will complete a yarn bomb in a secret Tyne Valley location, to create a Thanksgiving Tree. Yarn bombing involves covering the tree with colourful, crocheted squares (thanks to Pauline at Ready Steady Knit). The tree will be made up of over 1000 crocheted squares, each representing a loved one. The squares are made by Tyne Valley people and women in South Africa.

How Can I Help? Become involved by donating just £5 for one crocheted square, giving you the chance to leave a dedication of love, thanks or remembrance to a loved one. Donate through our Virgin money-giving page on www.spiritofafrica.org.uk, leaving your name and dedication within the message box. Wade Opticians As summer approaches and we all head outdoors (hopefully) many parents worry about children wearing spectacles when playing sports. Luckily, there are a number of options available so that good vision does not need to be compromised. The first most obvious solution is a safety frame with enhanced lenses designed to protect the eyes in case of impact. However some children dislike having any eyewear for sports such as rugby or football. The next option is contact lenses that mean children are not encumbered with frames. There various wearing modes such as daily and monthly lenses with daily lenses that can just be thrown away after use preferable for certain sports. Children are usually surprisingly good at getting lenses in and out and they can be worn all day or put in before games. A good optician will take the time to ensure that the child and parents are comfortable inserting, removing and caring for the lenses before allowing them to take them home. The final solution is a procedure called Ortho K. This revolutionary treatment uses a contact lens designed for the user’s eye that is worn overnight. The lens is removed in the morning and child will have good vision all day. This has the advantage of being managed by parents and is fully reversible when discontinuing lens use. Many children enjoy the freedom of Ortho K also known as the surgery free alternative to laser. Ortho K and contact lenses do not need to be just for children who play sports, they are suitable for many children (depending on prescription). Some children like to wear them daily so that spectacles are rarely worn and some like to wear them when required. Many parents assume that lens wear is not an option for children. This is no longer true. As long as the child understands the responsibilities of lens wear contact lenses or Ortho K may be an option. Contact lenses should always be fitted by a registered optician and regular aftercare appointments are essential to minimise risks. All children should have adequate protection from the sun to ensure the eyes stay healthy and reducing the risks of conditions in later light such as cataract and macular degeneration. As soon as the weather is suitable for sun lotion sunglasses should be worn as a general rule. Regular eye examinations are recommended for all children and are free on the NHS. Eye tests not only check for the need for prescription but also asses the health of the eyes. Children should be checked annually unless advised by an Optometrist.

Anderson & Garland

Julian Thomson, Director of A&G

Investing in Art

In an era when traditional forms of investment are volatile, people are turning to art and antiques as a tangible way of handling capital. This is no new concept. In the 1970s, the British rail pension fund famously invested in art - seeing high returns in the 1980s, when they sold at the height of the market. Investing in art is no different to the stock market, in that the rule of buying low and selling high applies. So where do you start? Our experiences at Anderson and Garland may help.

East Meets West

There has been an explosion in the values of Russian art lately, mirroring the Russian economy. When the Chinese economy boomed, so did the price of Chinese art and antiques. After the fall of communism in the 1990s, new and increasingly wealthy investors were desperate for Russian art. As they became more affluent, their tastes changed and their choices became more selective, pushing down the market for more modest pieces. In China, a huge population and strong national pride is fuelling an appetite for the best pieces and also antique pieces of more modest value. Right now, Chinese art has stabilized but quality items still command premium prices . However, in the long term, could China follow the Russian model? As the entrepreneurial classes develop sophisticated tastes, will their interest turn to the higher end of the market? We are now seeing a trend from these markets buying fine English silver and classic French furniture! Brazil and India are seen as emerging economic powers and could follow the same pattern.

Back Home in the North East

At Anderson and Garland, we’ve noticed the value of some traditional antiques of modest quality is sliding. However, when we sell examples of 20th century design, the prices seem to rise. Two items from the same estate illustrate this trend perfectly. In a recent sale, a good Regency period bookcase made a respectable £1 200, while a plywood table made over £4 000. Why so much for a piece of plywood, which some less savvy auctioneers could have sidelined? A mixture of provenance, ie a famous owner, a famous designer and a history of ownership from new explains it.

Provenance and Period Design

Provenance is one of those magical phrases. It can add serious value to a piece. Quite simply, provenance is where something has come from. Thus an item from a famous house is worth more than a similar object without such history. Combining a famous house and famous owner can send the price into the stratosphere. Similarly a famous designer can also add value. Pieces by Chippendale, Robert Adam and their contemporaries will hold their value, because there is a finite supply and steady demand. People interested in ethical investment also value the fact that antique furniture does not destroy the rain forests in the way new pieces do.

Pure Gold

Two areas of the market run by different rules. Because silver and gold are commodities, their prices fluctuate with the market. The provenance rule still applies, though. A silver item by a famous maker will always be worth more than a piece by a lesser one.

The Pitman Painters and Hirst Versus Hockney

On a local level, works by artists like 94-year-old ‘pitmen painter’ Norman Cornish have seen steady gains for the last two decades. Works by Cornish’s near contemporary Tom McGuiness still offer value: top flight examples of his work will fetch the same as a mid range Cornish. And will contemporary artists like Damien Hirst stand the test of time as well as Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and David Hockney have?

Simply the Best

The best piece will always be worth more than a mediocre one. And in the same way as you wouldn’t invest with a back street stockbroker, always buy from an auction house with a long track record, membership of professional bodies and the knowledge to advise clients well.

Joan Miro and Michel Maly – International Art in Northumberland This spring, Corbridge’s Balman Gallery is brimful of the spirit of Spain, France and Italy. The latest 20th Century Master to feature in the Gallery, Spanish print supremo Joan Miro, is showing now. Miro’s exhibition is followed by French artist Michel Maly’s contemporary classics, featuring passionate portrayals of French cafe life and Venice. Meanwhile, popular Newcastle artist, Kevin Day, is coming to the Discovery Museum, Newcastle.

Miro – Spanish Master Joan Miro is a renowned Spanish painter, whose paintings spill over with life. Drawing on his personal universe of symbols, Miro created a truly original world, in the joyous colours of Catalonia. He made many prints throughout his career and in 1954 was given the Venice Biennale printmaking prize. George Hemingway famously acquired Miro’s most famous painting, ‘The Farm’. Miro died in 1983. A broad range of Joan Miro’s vibrant original prints will be on show, from now until 21st of June. ‘A Dog Howls at the Moon,’ by Joan Miro

French Cafe Life, Maly Leading French artist Michel Maly was born in 1936 in Blois, France. This internationally acclaimed artist started painting in 1955 and exhibiting in 1959. Michel was awarded the ‘Prix Fénéon’, the University of Paris prize. In 2006 he published his book Maly. Michel Maly’s work has been constantly exhibited all over Europe, America and Japan. Michel Maly’s work often features French cafe life and is suffused with the atmosphere of France. Other paintings capture the mystical beauty of Venice. The passion which makes Michel’s work so admired is clear in his own words: ‘As soon as the brushes begin to manipulate colour on the white canvas, my anxiety disappears. Quickly, everything is organized, light moves. When I am drawing colour, I think I no longer exist. I am only in my canvas.’ This a must-see exhibition, running from 21st June.

Day at the Discovery Kevin Day’s solo show was so popular at the Corbridge gallery that his work has been moved across to Newcastle’s Discovery Museum, where he is currently leading the Balman Gallery @ Discovery exhibition. Art lovers in the area have strong, genuine affection for Kevin’s evocative paintings and prints, some of which feature local scenes. There is a superb range on show at the Discovery, so see it now.

Hexham Hidden gems along the wall A while ago I was sitting in the Twice Brewed Inn on the Military Road when a crowd of bikers came in having journeyed up from the south. As is the case these days they were mainly in their sixties. Much to my intense irritation one said that the countryside was not as good as some other places they had been to. My first thought was “Get off your bike, get away from the major roads and walk”. They were speaking in ignorance – what they did not know was that just up the hill is a unique landscape of great drama, beauty and a history to rival anywhere on this planet. It is one of the world’s most iconic historic sites - Steel Rigg! Steel Rigg is brilliant. It provides one of the quintessential views of Hadrian’s Wall and it is very easily accessible from the car park. It gives easy access to the Wall to those whose lack of mobility would otherwise deny them the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent views along the crags and the distant Crag Lough. The defensive use of the crags is obvious from here as Hadrian’s Wall follows the line of Peel Crags, Highshield Crags, and Hotbank Crags. Recently the Northumberland National Park Authority has extended the easy access to the Wall itself revealing much better and more extensive views. It is possible to take good pictures a few metres from your car. This makes it a boon to idle, overweight, and unfit old photographers like me who sometimes cannot get up in time to walk to other locations for the more unusual views of sunrise along the Wall. It is a bit rash to say that it is never the same for any two visits, but the variety of pictures available throughout the year is incredible. For a start, the sunrise and sunset move from a long way south of the Wall in winter to a long way north of the Wall in summer. From the same spot this can give you totally different pictures depending on the height of the sun, the length and direction of the shadows, and change in sunlit areas. You can add to this the great variation in weather and the changing colour of the vegetation through the seasons. It is possibly the best location on Hadrian’s Wall for spectacular low lying pockets of mist particularly in Spring and Autumn. A short walk in either direction along the Wall offers further great places to photograph or to simply enjoying being there. To the east there is Sycamore Gap (frequently known as

44

Robin Hood’s tree) and Crag Lough. To the west towards Winshields Crags the view back along the Wall becomes even more expansive showing the distant crags at Sewingshields. My interest in Steel Rigg is landscape photography. To most it is a day out with the family. The photographs we take are the most vivid memories we can have. The better those photographs the more vividly we can relive that moment in time. Some of us prefer that the family and/or friends should be looking into the camera. In this instance decide if you want to fill the picture with people or whether you want to show them against the fabulous view. Alternatively, and my preference, is to take the picture of the place with people enjoying themselves within it. Enjoy your photography this Spring. If you wish to see my photography it is still on display at the Forum Cinema in Hexham until 27th May. For times to visit the exhibition go to www.forumhexham.co.uk to find when it is open for viewing.

Hexham ADHD – hyperactivity in kids treated with drugs that stimulate the nervous system?! Firstly let’s look at what Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is. ADHD in children covers a broad spectrum of behavioural disorders, however according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) hyperactivity is the key criteria in a clinical diagnosis in the UK. A child with ADHD may be particularly hyperactive or predominantly inattentive or a combination of both. These children are in a constant state of ‘high alert’ finding it extremely difficult to focus or concentrate for any length of time. They are easily distracted and are unable to shut out background stimuli to focus on the task at hand. This is often reflected as ‘disruptive behaviour’ in the classroom such as inappropriate calling out, excessive chatter, inability to sit and listen quietly to the teacher or apply themselves to set objectives. These children are often scatty and disorganised as they become quickly disinterested with everything they do constantly moving onto the next project and never finishing the last. As adults, these people often have lots of things ‘on the go’ but never really complete anything, are often unable to fulfil ambition or realise life dreams because they are constantly waylaid by other distractions. Children with ADHD often suffer with sleeping difficulties as they cannot ‘switch off’ and have difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep as the slightest sound disturbs them. Poor sleep in infancy can be an early sign in babies who may go onto to develop ADHD. They startle easily with noise, movement or touch, cry readily and are fussy at the breast. The parents often find themselves ‘tiptoeing’ for fear of the baby waking and handle them cautiously to avoid the baby jumping and crying. With all this activity and overstimulation children with ADHD often become tired and irritable from adrenal exhaustion and reactive hypoglycaemia/ low blood sugar. These slumps in energy often occur mid morning and mid afternoon. Snacks during the mid morning break at school, usually something sugary, leads to that child bouncing off the classroom walls. So what happens in the brain of a child with ADHD? When a baby is growing in the womb the

first organ system to develop is the nervous system. The nervous system controls and coordinates every other organ system and function of the body. The nervous system has to go through stages of development as an infant grows into a child and eventually into an adult. Primitive reflexes are part of the immature nervous system in a young baby and in normal development these primary reflexes are integrated by the developing higher centres of the brain. However, in a child with ADHD, some of the primitive/primary reflexes fail to become integrated and one of the main retained primitive reflexes involved in ADHD is the Moro reflex which should be integrated at around 3-4 months of age. Testing for a persistent Moro reflex is an important part of the assessment of a child suspected of suffering with ADHD. Additional signs of a retained Moro reflex include: vestibular disorders -motion sickness, poor balance, poor co-ordination; physical timidity; visual perception disorders - inability to ignore extraneous and irrelevant material eg: movements in the visual periphery; slow papillary reactions, photosensitivity, difficulty with print on white paper, reactions to fluorescent light; auditory hypersensitivity - difficulty screening out extraneous noise; allergies, decreased immunity and recurrent infections; adverse drug reactions; easily fatigued; dislike of change; and poorly developed carbon dioxide reflex. Babies or children with a retained Moro reflex often show consistent resistance to lying on their back on the change table, during sleep and when swimming.

Astonishingly, ADHD in the UK is treated medically with drugs like Ritalin which actually stimulate the nervous system. The idea behind this is that the drug supposedly ‘sharpens’ the focus of the child. In my opinion, stimulation of the higher brain centres with these types of drugs simply act to mask the effects of a persistent Moro reflex. However, common sense suggests that this is not an appropriate or healthy approach to further stimulate an already hyperactive child. This just leads to chronic adrenal exhaustion and a multitude of health problems further down the line. At Family Chiropractic we address the child as a whole by looking at re-regulating the function of the nervous system with specific exercises designed to integrate retained primitive reflexes. We also make adjustments to improve the cranial/spinal function and address any dietary issues or nutritional deficiencies that are having an adverse effect on that child’s health. I am passionate about helping children function at their best and at Family Chiropractic we offer every baby or child a ‘Free Kids Check’. Please call us on 01434 605688 if you would like to schedule a visit at my practice.

Secondary psychological symptoms include: anxiety; excessive reaction to stimuli - mood swings, tense muscle tone; inability to accept criticism; cycles of hyperactivity followed by fatigue; difficulty in making decisions; low self esteem and insecurity. As a Chiropractor with over 20 years of clinical experience, I often find severe restrictions in cranial bone function in children with ADHD. Inappropriate function of the cranium/ skull and spinal column can create stress on the nervous system causing ‘neurological confusion’.

Summer Chutney We’re now nearly half way through the year and spring is definitely in the air. The last thing we’re thinking about is food that reminds us of shorter days and long, dark nights. The only upshot of winter is that hearty stews, soups and preserves are most popular at that time of year. Why am I bringing this up now in the spring, I hear you ask? Firstly, I want to address the many misconceptions that exist about preserves. I think what initially comes to the forefront of our minds is how we use this product – on toast many of you would say. Yes, that’s true, but preserves are so much more than that. They are extremely versatile. I know the majority of you lead busy lives and the last thing to think about is how to utilise the preserves on the shelf at home. Trust me, a preserve can add so much to a meal and for all you new age gardeners out there, bottling is a way of preserving what was grown in the garden over the summer, whilst minimising waste. Why not recycle the fruit and vegetables of your labour to savour during those long dark days – a reminder of the summer and your achievements? Take a day out, visit the garden centre, and pick out what you want to grow. Tomatoes are perhaps easiest, but it’s your choice. Remember that vegetables, as well as fruit, can be used to make jam! If you buy tomatoes, dependent on the weather, you could be left with under ripe tomatoes. Don’t despair - I have just the recipe. I make preserves for a living and the most important thing to remember is that everything must be sterilised: jars, lids and equipment. I use the old-fashioned method of placing jars and tools in a hot oven at 220 degrees C for 25 minutes after they’ve been washed and rinsed in very hot soapy water. Lids are placed in a pan of boiling water for ten minutes and then dried off in a warm oven. You can do this in two stages, but don’t bring the jars out of the oven. Air is the enemy

58

when making preserves. Trust me, once you’ve tasted the fruits of your labour, there’s no going back. Chutney is something I love and it’s relatively easy to make. Initially brought over from India, we have adapted this preserve to suit the British palette; it’s so versatile and can be used in both summer salads and hot dishes. The sweet, sour, heat and spice make it irresistible as versatile as tomato ketchup.

Green Tomato Chutney

You will need a stainless steel pan with a heavy-bottomed base, jars, lids, a jam funnel, wooden spoon and ladle, as well as kitchen towels.

Note

Towards the end of the cooking, stir frequently to ensure the chutney doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan. The last thing you want is burnt chutney. Once the chutney is cooked, pour it into hot, sterilised jars, up to approximately 5mm from the top of the jar. Wipe clean, then seal with the lid. Store in the refrigerator and it should last for up to 8 months

Ingredients 2.2kg green tomatoes (5lb) 1.8 litre vinegar (3pints) 1kg apples peeled (2lb) 1 level tbsp salt 450g onions (1lb) 4 tsp English mustard 450g sultanas (1lb) 2 tbsp all spice or mixed spice 1 kg Demerara sugar (2lb)

Method

Chop the onions, tomatoes and apples into smallish pieces. Place in a heavybased pan, along with the sultanas, sugar, vinegar and spices. Cook on a gentle heat, until all the sugar has dissolved. Don’t try to rush this: chutneys need long, slow, gentle cooking. Once all the sugar has dissolved, raise the heat and cook steadily until the chutney is thick. You can test chutney by dragging the wooden spoon along the bottom of the pan. If it leaves a clear line for a few seconds, it’s done.

Major Changes for the Family Court Family lawyers are bracing themselves for a sea change in the way that the family court system works; these changes came into force on the 22 April 2014. Many of these changes won’t be noticed by members of the public who rarely need to use the court system. At Major Family Law we are prepared for these changes and we want to ensure that you know about one essential change. The process of mediation helps people to split up with less stress and less cost than using the court process. Mediation has been available to people going through family breakdown for over 10 years. As from the 22 April 2014 people were no longer able to access the court system unless they can satisfy the court that they have been to a mediation information and assessment meeting. Legal Aid for mediation is still available and the criteria will be widened to encourage people to attend, rather than issue court proceedings. Where

MJF

one person is entitled to Legal Aid for mediation, the whole cost of mediation will be paid for by the Legal Aid Agency. Prior to the changes, the attendance of the applicant at a meeting was desirable but not mandatory. After the changes, the family court can reject any relevant family application without the applicant’s proof of attendance at this meeting. A few people will be exempt from attending the meeting, depending on their circumstances. Naturally they will need to prove their case before the court issues their application. In response to these changing times, Major Family Law are the lead provider of a new national mediation initiative, Lawyer Supported Mediation (LSM). Carpets at Wholesale Prices Boosts Retailer after Expansion “The expansion of our retail operation last year with the opening of a huge new carpet depot in Gateshead has boosted our buying power significantly and we have been able to pass these savings directly to our customers.”, these are the words of Joel Dickinson, Operations Director of Karpet Mills, the North East’s biggest stockist of quality carpets. He adds, “We have completely filled our new 8000 square foot shop next to Matalan on the Tyne Bridge Retail Park near the redeveloped centre of Gateshead. All of our carpet depots are bursting at the seams with carpets at genuinely wholesale prices that any customer can buy.” Joel, is the sixth generation to join the company which has been selling carpets for over 100 years and explains the success of the business since it was founded in 1878, “We have a very simple philosophy – sell quality carpets at low, low prices – backed up by first rate customer service.” He adds, “We have buyers across Europe sourcing products at crazy prices. The demand from our 3 branches allows us access to products in high volumes at heavily discounted prices. We pass these

savings directly to our customers. We will not be beaten on price. We offer the lowest prices and the best service. For customers who haven’t visited us before, we invite them to see why we have been successfully selling carpets for over a century – old fashioned service; modern day, competitive prices.” The previous Durham Pine site in Gateshead offers two floors of showroom space which houses over 100 rolls and 1000 remnants of carpet and vinyl. All parking charges for the large pay and display car park will be refunded to all customers who visit Karpet Mills. There are prices to suit everyone from £2 per sqm to £45 per sqm. “Our prices are very very competitive. We sell carpets at prices that other carpet shops buy them at. We have heavy weight wool twists priced as low as £7.99 per sq. or Axminster at £17.99 per sq. and can offer fitting within two days by one of our 15 teams of professional, time-served carpet fitters”. “We understand what our customers want and try to provide that in a simple and efficient way”. “Our prices are the most competitive around and with a free estimating service, professional fitting and complete aftercare
