Editor’s page Spring has Sprung? Well it certainly heading in the right direction! The sun is getting stronger everyday and nature is beginning to stir again. The Spring picture competition entries certainly cheered up our office. Thanks to all the entries and congratulations to AMBER NICHOLSON, Age 7, who designed our front cover - Well done Amber and all our other prize winners! This issue is jam packed with things to do which should help to shake off those winter blues. Down on the River Tyne, the Tyne Rivers Trust continues to do great work come rain or shine. See how they are helping fish passage and creating new habitat on page 26. Julian Thompson from Anderson & Garland auctioneers gives us an insight in to what’s hot and what’s not in the Antique trade on page 36. New to the TVE, I am delighted to have the Kielder Observatory on board too. Throughout this coming year they will give us an insight in to their fascinating

work which starts in this issue on page 22. Roger Clegg captures Allen Banks in it’s best light on page 16. He goes on to explain his love affair with this area on Page 44. The National trust are actively fund raising to fix the ‘ wobbly ‘ bridge at Allen Banks. If you would like to help out then see their article on page 47 regarding fund raising. Talking of the Nation Trust, see their 2 page spread of listings that should get you out and about on pages 48 / 49. Berlinda Ambrose in her own honest and sometimes challenging style looks at child hood infections on page 55. Keep up the good work Berlinda! The Balman Gallery in Corbridge has secured some great exhibitions this spring. See their full listings on page 43.

So let’s get out of the house and enjoy this special area we call our home.

Welcome To Your Optimum Health

We are qualified practitioners of well respected, evidence based techniques (and medical techniques) and provide a flexible, unique package for particular health issues or for any individual needs. We understand how chronic pain affects the body. By helping you to utilise the energy within and removing barriers, you can lead a healthier life (both physically and mentally). We specialise in musculoskeletal techniques such as deep tissue Tui Na massage and the Emmett technique for a gentler, longer term solution to injuries or posture problems. In addition we practice microsystems techniques such as Reflexology, Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy.

We would like to welcome you to your new clinic in Ponteland called Optimum Health. Optimum Health was established in 2007 and moved from Hexham to Ponteland in January this year. As Practitioners of a range of well-chosen techniques and pain management specialists, we would like to support you to reach your maximum health and wellbeing potential by aiding recovery from injury or illness Throughout my life I have been fascinated by the human body and health. As a young child I often suffered severe bouts of tonsillitis which at the time felt as though I spent more time being ill than being well. Following removal of my tonsils I began to experience better health and vitality as I was finally able to eat a more varied diet. At school I studied Anatomy, Physiology and Health. Thus began my journey of learning about the human body. Over the following years (I won’t say how many) I have continued to learn more and more about health and well-being. In 2007 I was to take a different road from working for the NHS. I went on to study complementary medicine / therapies and to opening my own business. It has always been my dream to create an environment where people can come to find the answer to their health problems and to learn how to become involved in their own health and well-being. In December 2013, Alun and I took over office space in Ponteland and have done just that. Barbara Ellis I have lived in Edinburgh most of my life but moved to Northumberland in 2011 to join Barbara in her clinic. My introduction to massage was through Barbara. Throughout my working life I was suffering from back pain due to heavy lifting. After just 2 sessions with Barbara my back never felt stronger. Her attitude to health and well-being encouraged me to take the steps to study manual therapies and I have adopted the approach –”look after your body and your body will look after you”. Alun Epps At Optimum Health our mission is to provide relief of pain, stress and anxiety; supporting general wellbeing, nutrition and health maintenance. We provide education and awareness that lifestyle, diet and posture have a knock on effect to health in later life and should be addressed as early as possible. Young children will always get the best results as their bodies are more flexible and bad habits have not set in. However, teenagers are more at risk of developing poor lifestyle choices and it will be through education of families that we will be able to create healthy adults. We like to help raise awareness on the best methods of keeping well by creating good habits for as many people as possible for a healthier life. What do we do?  We assist in the relief of pain and reduction of stress.  We help you to ensure health, wealth and vitality throughout life (because good health and positive energy allows a better working life and a positive attitude).  We support individual clients in a way that suits their body and unique circumstances, in order to maintain overall health.  We utilise the energy within the body and remove barriers to a healthier life (both physically and mentally); making you feel and perform better.  We challenge people to lose 10lbs in weight or gain 10lb in muscle depending on what is necessary to meet their overall health requirements. Our programme of care begins with a full health evaluation. This includes physical examination and computerised Posture imaging – an objective, visual method to identify sources of pain related to misalignments in posture. The use of our Acu-Graph imaging system provides a visual method to identify nerve energy and blood flow.

We have a track record of helping you achieve real results and have the overall health and well-being knowledge to help clients feel better and maintain their health, wealth and vitality. Better health impacts on all aspects of your life. The long lasting results come from working with the nervous system, muscle structure and circulation. Re-occurrence is minimised with our aftercare programme. "Emmett therapy: My experience: I had never heard of Emmett therapy. This surprised me, because I have had chronic problems with back, hip and shoulder pain for almost as long as I can remember, and I often joke to people that I have tried ‘every therapy known to man’, without much success. The therapy is very gentle and non-invasive - no scary cracks or alarming crunching. In fact it’s so gentle it’s hard to believe at first that it will have any effect, but after just one session I noticed a big improvement, and people even remarked that I was looking well. Some even noticed that I was standing up straighter. After a few sessions, not only had the acute problem which had led me to seek help disappeared, but other long-standing problems had improved greatly. I haven’t had a treatment for several weeks now, but am feeling good, standing straighter and generally much improved. Thank you so much." P. Birch, Haltwhistle

Two things drive us here at Optimum Health: 1. An evidence based approach to overall well-being 2. The matching up of traditional whole body techniques with modern technology Our philosophy is to work in collaboration with GP’s. This enables us to share information with them so that they have the full picture of our client’s management of their condition. We advise people to consult their GP whenever seeking our services. We would love to meet and have you come and discuss how we can help, either with overall health and well-being or with specific back, neck, shoulder or joint pain that you may have.

‘Thank you so much for sorting my shoulder out in only three visits. The frozen shoulder was so painful and showed no sign of spontaneous recovery before I consulted you. The treatment you gave has been extremely effective with steady improvement following each visit. Your understanding and caring approach was much appreciated and I am very grateful for what you have done for me’. ( Alan - 2013)

Open Days – Each Thursday throughout March : 9 am -7 pm If your goal is to get healthier in 2014 then now is your opportunity. We are offering new clients a full health evaluation, including physical examination and Computerised Posture, Nerve and Blood Flow Imaging for just £85 The cost for a new client visit is normally £115. That’s £115 worth of service for £85. This offer expires on 10 April 2014. Call us:- 01661 823333 Or pop in to: Optimum Health, Smithyside, First Floor, 7 Bell Villas, Ponteland, NE20 9BD More information can be found at www.optimumhealth.org.uk info@optimumhealth.org.uk

Kielder Observatory Kielder Observatory is a unique visitor attraction, set in the heart of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. The Park was awarded its Gold Tier Dark Sky Status in December 2013 – this makes it the largest area of protected night sky in Europe and third largest in the world. If, like most of us, you live in a built up area, you’ve probably never experienced a completely dark sky – to do so is an amazing experience and one you will never forget! Kielder Observatory was founded by Gary Fildes who is now Director of the facility and lead astronomer at many of its events. The building itself was designed by Charles Barclay Architects – it was designed to be in keeping with the surrounding forest and to be environmentally friendly. As such, it is solar and wind powered. Since its opening in 2008, Gary and his team of dedicated volunteers have welcomed over 50,000 visitors, firmly placing the Observatory at the forefront of the astronomy revolution taking place across Britain. They are supported by a superb team of Trustees and by Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust. Gary’s driving force in developing the Observatory was a passion and determination to make the splendours of our universe more accessible to the public. The awe-inspiring spectacle of a clear, dark night sky has captured the imagination of stargazers not just throughout the North East but also from further afield, with visitors travelling from all over the UK to attend events. The Observatory attracts adults, children, families and both amateur and professional astronomers. It also hosts an ever-increasing number of private events which range from school outings, to Scout/Guide events to family celebrations. In Gary’s own words he is ‘living the dream’, being able to share his passion and knowledge with more and more people, in an environment that is so special and unique to the UK. Joining Gary this month, as Assistant Director and fulltime astronomer, will be Nick Howes. Nick is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and has worked for 10 years as a science writer, as well as running his own observatory in Wiltshire. He has written for Astronomy US, Sky and Telescope and Spaceflight and has also contributed to guest articles for NASA. His images of comets and asteroids have also graced the NASA home pages on many occasions. With effect from 1st February 2014 the Observatory will be opening its doors seven days a week. Events on offer include the very popular Aurora Nights, Universe Full of Stars Nights and Family Astronomy Events. Gary has also responded to public requests and introduced some specialist events which include Astrophotography Nights and Telescope Workshops. June sees the introduction of our Cosmology Workshops – a dedicated course that runs from 1pm through to midnight with interactive talks, discussions and learning activities, followed by observing later in the evening Come along to an event to enjoy the inter-active shows, learn about the night sky and view it through the powerful telescopes. Observe the beautiful Milky Way and deep sky objects such as galaxies, see the sun’s surface using our solar telescopes and be amazed by passing comets and shooting stars. Meet experienced astronomers and learn how to take stunning photographs of distant objects in the universe.

Tyne Rivers Trust

Tyne Rivers Trust

The fishing season has started, and the river is starting to warm up at last! Here at Tyne Rivers Trust we are helping to ensure the safe passage of all species of fish, both up and downstream, between all the stretches of our rivers. This is especially important for all migratory species such as eels, sea trout, and of course, salmon which need access to the whole length of a river system, arriving from the sea at one end of the river system to the shallow gravels in which to spawn at the other, then back down again. We seek funding for our work to restore river flows and enable fish passage, especially through past man-made obstacles. We also seek help from local individuals to help us to monitor our rivers throughout the Tyne catchment covering 2,700 miles of rivers and streams! River obstructions range from huge weirs, such as the one at Hexham Bridge - which often may not be removed, and therefore might require a fish pass – to shallow weirs in streams, which may simply need some wooden baulks (railway sleeper-sized beams) to channel the flow sufficiently for fish passage.

Significant recent achievements

Project scope and timeframe

Newbrough Burn fish easement (pool and step):

Overall, our work aims to reduce the ecological impact of physical barriers to fish migration throughout the Tyne catchment. We map and prioritise the most significant riverine obstructions and where appropriate, we raise funds and deliver improvements to them. These improvements can range from full removal to technical (engineered) and near natural (fish easement) fish pass solutions. By reducing the impact of obstructions we will primarily benefit fish species, although other elements of freshwater ecology may also benefit i.e. macro-invertebrates. By tackling man-made barriers and impoundments we may restore the river to a more natural state – with good ‘hydrological’ and ‘geomorphological’ function. People then benefit from more robust ecosystems and healthy fisheries.

Completed in 2011 and funded by DEFRA (the Government’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs), this derelict weir was a barrier to migratory fish in this tributary of the South Tyne. TRT helped the children of Newbrough First School to raise salmon for some weeks in their nearby classroom and they seeded this first generation above the weir. By electrofishing every year above the obstruction both before and after the project, we were immediately able to establish how effective this easement was.

Catchment-wide mapping and prioritisation

We work to record new Tyne obstructions - including decaying structures which sometimes become obstructions - and to gather information on those already known. Our monitoring is helped enormously by the information coming in from our volunteers and the general public. We monitor the effect they are having, assessing cost-effective remediation options to achieve maximum benefit for the river. We are delighted to have new redds, (‘nests’ of fish eggs laid by mature ‘hen’ fish) above previous obstructions .

Whitley Mill

Stocksfield Burn, Old Ridley Ford (Wooden baulk and box pass)

Defra also funded TRT to improve fish passage on this main Tyne tributary, and work was completed in Spring 2013. Here we have used wooden baulks to modify flows over this complex road ford, ensuring that fish can travel above it in a wider range of flow conditions. We have since observed fish migrating over the structure and spawning in the upstream gravels.

Devils Water (Rowley and Ham Burn obstructions)

During 2012/13 we were funded by the Environment Agency to install four low-cost fish passes on river obstructions on this Main Tyne tributary. The Devils Water flows into the Tyne near Corbridge and is an important river for salmon and sea trout. EA monitoring found that there were, ‘lower-than-expected’ levels of fish in the river’s upper tributaries. Bottom left: Dalton, Top Right: Whitley Mill, Middle: Juniper and Bottom Right: Barker House (under construction).

Progress We have worked closely with the Environment Agency (EA) to establish a joint strategy for improving the Tyne’s most serious obstructions. The Trust supplements the EA’s list of known obstructions with our own surveys; and there is a fisheries monitoring element in the official Water Framework Directive assessments which also highlights the damaging effect of obstructions.

Rock Ramp at March Burn Riding Mill

March Burn at Riding Mill fish easement (Rock Ramp)

In Summer 2012, Tyne Rivers Trust improved the March Burn’s accessibility to all fish species through the construction of a ‘closeto-nature’ type of fish easement on this main Tyne tributary. The weir was an ancient structure which couldn’t be removed. Our specialist contractors installed for us rows of boulders, to create a natural-looking, ‘stepped’ river bed. The work which was funded by Defra, has opened up approximately 18 miles of river upstream!

Barker House

What next?

The Trust is currently working towards building two substantial fish passes at Hexham Bridge on the main body of the Tyne and on the Derwent at High Dam in Gateshead. Dalton

This in addition to a programme of smaller fish easements, including Holtwhistle

I am delighted to have been invited to write a feature about metal detecting in the Tyne Valley Express. As an experienced and fanatical detectorist, I have over the years acquired a knowledge of history that books and classrooms cannot teach. Our area is steeped in history and this has led to many great finds both from myself and my detecting friends. So for this edition, let us look at what we can expect to find in and around the Tyne Valley.

THE ROMANS

Most people are going to think of the Romans because of Hadrian’s Wall and the forts along its route, but to a detectorist like myself this can be misleading. Yes there are artefacts and coins found but not in the quantities that you may expect. A lot of the folk that built and manned the wall and said forts were conscripted soldiers and slaves. They owned very little in the way of possessions or money. Occasional finds such as silver denarii / brooches and the odd interesting artefacts, like the “Short Staff” end – see picture. The short staff was used to direct troops into battle. This bronze example in the shape of an eagle was the emblem of the legions. Lost near Haydon Bridge about 1900 years ago, it is still complete and now sits in the Roman Museum in Ravensglass, Cumbria.

THE MEDIEVAL TYNE VALLEY.

The valley is littered with medieval churches, and villages, and a lot of the field boundaries still exist today as they did 1000 years ago. If we are going to find silver and gold coins on our day out, most will date from this period. These coins are known as hammered coins. This is due to the process used to make them by striking a blank disc in between two dies. With the arrival of the Normans came many coin mints in the UK. Over 80 major towns and cities are thought to have struck coins at some point during the medieval times. Coins were minted in Newcastle, Carlisle, Durham and one mint is even thought to have existed in Corbridge. These English coins were mainly made of silver and gold. See below an example of a gold coin found within the valley. Most of our larger villages in the area were in existence either prior to, or soon after the arrival of, the Normans. Sadly some villages disappeared when the plague arrived in the 1300’s and a lot were burnt to the ground. Some churches were spared and still exist today, even though there are no signs of a village close by. An example being the church at Throckrington, where a medieval village once stood. Close by, Little and Great Bavington suffered the same fate and the church at little Bavington has been long lost. To a detectorist, areas like these can be productive, as the land is accessible, well ploughed and have not been covered by urban sprawl. A gold, one quarter noble of Edward3rd, dating from 1361-1369. This is a fine example which I found close to Riding Mill. A noble was 80 pennies, making this a 20p piece.

THE SAXONS DID YOU KNOW – Any person in the UK finding an artefact of 300 years or older that is made of precious metal, gold, silver, etc, must declare the find within 14 days. It’s very rare to find Saxon artefacts in Northumberland, however a few really nice pieces have been found recently. Little is known about the Saxons in this area, and DR. Robert Collins of Newcastle Museum Services is trying to collate as much information as possible. A lot of the information comes directly from detectorists like myself, who willingly declare all our finds to our local FLO (Finds liaison officer). Right is a Saxon sceat dating from the late 600’s AD which was found close to Hexham. Most probably minted in Europe or a traveling mint, this coin is made of silver and is about 10mm in diameter. The Saxons also brought gold coins called the tremissis to the North east. I have been lucky enough to see one found locally.

The coins we see and use today are milled coins. The earliest milled coins produced in England date back to around 1562. Milled coins did not fully replace hammered coins until around 1662. Coins were made from copper in their lowest denomination. Silver and gold signifying higher denominations. Modern intensive farming practises using fertilizers are blamed for eating away artefacts, even silver is degrading.

DETECTING

As a rule we detect only to a depth of around 4-6”, which surprises many people. Keeping to this depth allows us to interpret the information provided by the detecting machine more accurately. Landowners can be safe in the knowledge that I am not digging large holes / trenches causing damage and livestock welfare issues. Modern detecting machines provide a lot of information of what may be buried prior to opening up the ground. They have the ability to scan out scrap metals like iron. If you have an interest to know what may be beneath your feet on land you own, albeit a paddock, pastures or farm land, I would be happy to come around with a spare machine and spend a few hours with you. You just never know what might come up. Contact Glen Hood on 07949141670.

Get started on the highly addictive craft of sock knittin g

We have been having such a busy winter here at Ready Steady Knit that I just wanted to bring you up to date with all of the goings on. Our charity knitting has been very successful and great fun too. Back in November we supported the Big Issue Foundation’s Big Knitathon. Our knitters were very productive and we sent off a big parcel of about 150 knitted squares towards their project to knit the world’s biggest blanket. Our customers have also knit hundreds of jumpers and hats for babies in Africa. Jean Pollard, retired nurse from Wylam, is going back to the Joshua Orphan and Community Care Foundation in Malawi later this month with a huge load of the tiny knitted garments, so many that she stopped counting at 200!! Our latest charity knitting project is a little closer to home. We are asking our customers to knit woolly hats, scarves and gloves which will be distributed by The People’s Kitchen to homeless and vulnerable people in Newcastle. The patterns can be collected from the shop and completed hats left with us too. Here is a scarf pattern that can be quickly knitted in double knitting yarn and will be cosy and warm for a homeless person.

Anderson & Garland I have put together a list covering some of many different collecting areas in the world of antiques. This article covers a small section of the wide range of antiques, but it should give you some of the first easy steps into finding great value pieces and starting a collection.

Gold has also fallen slightly since recent highs as the Far Eastern economies pause for breath.

Antique Furniture

Ceramics and Porcelain

In the antique furniture market there are vast amounts of styles and types. The best quality items by internationally recognised makers are still performing well. However at the more modest end of the market, antique furniture represents great value for money when compared to new pieces. Furniture currently fetching good prices includes: - Chesterfield Sofa’s/Chaise Longue - Armchairs by good makers such as Howard and Sons - Inlaid French furniture - Retro furniture from the 1950’s-1970’s Furniture struggling to achieve values of 20-30 years ago - Antique dining and bedroom furniture - Bookcases Period furniture is usually that made within the reigns of kings and queens . Some examples include: English Antique Furniture Styles: - Georgian (1714-1812) - Regency (1812-1830) - Victorian (1837-1901) - Edwardian (1901-1910)

Antique Silver

Quality diamonds also command a very good price in the current market. Throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries Chinese, porcelain was exported to the UK in large quantities. Popular amongst Chinese porcelain styles were Famille Rose and Famille Verte. English porcelain was also widely exported. Some of the popular factories and designers are: - Moorcroft - Clarice Cliff - Royal Doulton - Wedgwood - Royal Worcester

Clock and Watches

There are many varieties of antique clocks and watches. They are usually collected not just for their beauty but for functionality. Popular antique clock and watch types include: - Longcase clock (English name of the Grandfather clock) - Carriage clock - Bracket clock - Mantle clock - Wall Clock - Watches - Pocket Watches Popular antique clock and watch makers: - Japy Freres - Charles Frodsham - Gustav Becker - Rolex - Omega

Antique silver has been one of the most popular sellers on the market recently. There has been a boom in recent years, as both the global recession and the demand for raw materials from China increased prices of precious metals including silver. As a result, in some cases good silver has been sold too cheaply on the high street for scrap prices rather than at auction, where higher prices could have been achieved for period and highly decorative pieces.

Other Popular Antiques Categories:

English Britannia Standard silver and Sterling silver from the 17th Century through to the 20th Century is of the highest quality and commands good prices.

Antique markets are changing constantly. What is popular today might not be popular tomorrow. The value and popularity of an antique can be influenced by many factors.

All English silver has a hallmark or stamp. This provides some important information about your antique silver i.e. - The standard of silver used - Origin of the silver - Date the silver was made - The maker of the silver

Remember the saying ‘buyer beware’ when it comes to buying antiques. Here are a few tips on how to protect yourself.

This information is vital in determining the age and value of your antique silver. Here are a few popular antique silver makers: - Tiffany - George Jensen - Omar Ramsden - Hester Bateman - Paul Storr

36

- Art - Antiquities - Books and Manuscripts - Fishing - Maritime - Glass - Toys and Dolls

- Chinese Jade - Architecture and Garden - Decorative Arts - Maps, Atlases, and Globes - Musical Instruments - Textiles

- Most importantly, research pieces you are interested in buying. - Also do your research on the “Auction House”. If they are not a member of any professional institutions or associations then caution is advised. - Ask a professional for there opinion. We have specialists at our salerooms delighted to give advice, whether you are buying or selling. Your local auction house is always a great place to start a collection or to have your items appraised.

ENLIGHTEN G R E E N H O U S E S NEW LIGHT - NEW LIFE

This spring sees an exciting range of work at Balman Gallery, from ‘Toon Art’ to Joan Miro, Spanish Master. In the gallery, we have paintings from renowned Newcastle artist, Kevin Day. The series of 20th Century Masters exhibitions continues, when Joan Miro’s work comes to Corbridge. And ‘Toon Art’ is showing at Balman Gallery @ Discovery, alongside the Discovery Museum’s hit ‘Toon Times’ NUFC show.

People-Watching Paintings: Kevin Day

‘Embrace,’ Kevin Day

Kevin Day’s intriguing paintings leave a lasting impression: the wistful faces appeal to the people-watcher in us. Kevin depicts people in everyday environments, or staged scenarios, where the figures have a cinematic quality. Vermeer-influenced Kevin has achieved great recognition in a short period, having exhibited in acclaimed galleries in London and Italy. Kevin’s exhibition runs until 12th April. His work is now highly collectable.

‘Toon Art’: Balman Gallery @ Discovery Museum

Well-established and new artists to the Gallery are showcasing their passion for the beautiful game. We have sourced rare paintings and sketches from Alexander Millar, famed internationally for his Geordie ‘Gadgie’ paintings, for the show. ‘When Saturday Comes,’ Alexander Millar

Miro Comes to Corbridge

‘Homage to Joan Miro,’ by Joan Miro World renowned Spanish Catalan painter Joan Miro was born in Barcelona in 1893 and from his 20s lived mostly in Paris. There will be a broad range of Miro’s increasingly rare, iconic original prints on show. Previous exhibitions have included work by Picasso, Chagall and Matisse - all proved popular with art collectors. Influenced by Fauvism, Cubism and Dadaism, Miro was associated with the Surrealists, but had a very individual style. The Joan Miro Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art Study was opened in Barcelona in 1976. He died in 1983. Miro’s work is on display from 19th April to 31st May.

‘Fairs Cup,’ Signed by Players Wendy Parkin and Mark Scorer put paintings forward for ‘Toon Art’ and were chosen from many hopeful artists to exhibit. Mark’s painting of the iconic Fairs Cup team is signed by 21 of the players.

Hexham

Home at Allen Banks “I have travelled all over the world and this is the most beautiful place I have been,” someone said to me when I was out walking one day. Where was this magical and heavenly place? Was it Machu Piccu or perhaps the Victoria Falls or maybe the Seychelles? No, it was much nearer to home and a little Northumberland secret. It was ALLEN BANKS! Allen Banks is brilliant; it is not very big, but what it lacks in quantity it sure makes up for in quality. It is archetypal English woodland and, like much English woodland, it is not independent of the influence of mankind. It was created in 1850 as an ornamental woodland. In 1942 the Bowes-Lyon family donated it to the National Trust so people could enjoy it the way they had for nearly one hundred years. Allen Banks is dominated by the steep sided, tree clad gorge of the lower part of the course of the short and beautiful four mile long River Allen. It is like a woodland TARDIS – not a large area, but a positive maze of beautiful and dramatic paths. On the east side is Moralee Fell and the delightful, secluded Moralee Tarn. I am an Allen Banks groupie and a frequent visitor - I find it both restful and inspiring. It presents seemingly endless opportunities for photography. On the theme of groupies, I am also a bit of a tree groupie and enthusiastically enjoy photographing them. I will hotly deny any claims that I have been seen hugging trees. As always, to try to do something well you need to devote time and effort. I have been to Allen Banks probably hundreds of times. I know when to go to Moralee Tarn for the marsh marigolds and, later, the water lilies. I know where and when to go to find the best autumn colour and the most spectacular location for snow covered trees. There are places where the wooded paths allow glimpses of distant vistas and dramatic views – I know them as well. Allen Banks is a great place to take children – on a hot summer’s day they can swim in the river about ten minute’s walk from the car park. So, whereas my interest lies in the trees and the scenic paths, it is also a great place to photograph friends and family. Remember, when you photograph people to decide whether you wish to produce a picture of them or a picture of them at Allen Banks which will better represent the day out. That little bit

44

of thought can turn a simple record of your visit into a picture and a memory to value. Allen Banks has an abundance of wildlife if you are prepared to sit and wait. Within a few metres of where I have been sitting, deer have walked past me and a goosander sawbilled duck caught a fish. Much closer I have seen stoats and, amazingly, a pine marten. At a greater distance, I have watched kingfishers fighting. The river above Plankey Mill runs through the Staward Gorge which is equally worth a visit with a walk to Staward Peel on its high and dramatic ridge. Spring is on its way; add Allen Banks to your list of days out. Whether as a hobby or for memories of a great day out - enjoy your spring photography. If you wish to see my photography, from April 11th to 27th May, it will be on display at the Forum Cinema in Hexham. For times to visit the exhibition go to www.forumhexham.co.uk to find when it is open for viewing.

Save the 'wobbly' bridge at Allen Banks For years, people have enjoyed crossing the 'wobbly' bridge at Allen Banks in the Tyne Valley, unfortunately since the bridge and surrounding footpaths were badly damaged by floods in May 2013 that has not been possible. The Bridge is one of the only surviving historic features of Susan Davidson’s Wilderness Garden, created in 1850. It is one of the key things that makes Allen Banks so special and is much loved by visitors. We launched the ‘save the wobbly bridge’ appeal on Wednesday 22 January 2014 when the bridge was completely

dismantled. Since then the team at the National Trust’s Hadrian’s Wall Country Group have been overwhelmed by the support for Allen Banks as well as the Victorian suspension bridge and would like to say a huge thank you to every one who has contributed so far. An amazing amount has already been donated but our appeal is ongoing and if you want to see the 'wobbly' bridge rebuilt for future generations to enjoy, then please visit the Allen Banks website. Alternatively you can send a cheque made out to 'National Trust' to: Eric Wilton, National Trust - Hadrian's Wall Country Group, Unit A, Council Yard, Hexham, Northumberland, NE49 0ND. Thank you.

Ear infections - and the lies we are told As a young child I suffered from chronic, recurrent ear infections and tonsillitis. All the medication I was given ruined my immune system, and because my immune system became so compromised my parents were further ‘advised’ to medicate me for every other little ailment in case I was ‘overcome’ by every bug. I was also vaccinated to within an inch of my life, as medical belief was (and still is) the more vaccinations you had, the better your immune system would be. My immune system plunged to ‘Loch Nessian’ depths I later developed severe eczema and eventually an autoimmune condition. When I look back, it horrifies me how I was made to endure so much mismanagement of my health.

misalignments (including the jaw, due to its proximity to the ear canal) contribute significantly to poor lymphatic and venous drainage from the ear (via the Eustachian tube).

Did you know by the age of 1, 50% of children will have had at least one episode of otitis media (ear infection), and by the age of 3 this reaches over 70%? Up to 1/3 of children will have 6 or more episodes before starting school and some can have up to 12 episodes per year.

Medical management of ear infections include antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants and in chronic cases, surgery. There is little evidence for the effectiveness of these therapies, and in the UK GP’s are advised against the routine use of antibiotics for simple cases of otitis media as the condition is often self-limiting. Overuse of antibiotics causes further depletion of immunity as ‘good bugs’ in the body which contribute to a healthy immune system are killed indiscriminately. Antibiotic resistance is also commonplace, so what will you do when you might need them for a life threatening illness and you have developed resistance to them? Grommets are surgically implanted into the Eustachian tubes and are used to drain the build up of fluid in the ear; they often fall out and do nothing to address the root cause of the problem. At the end of the day ear infections are a manifestation of disharmony in the body. Just ‘treating’ the symptoms does nothing to correct their true cause.

Risk factors to developing ear infections include birth trauma (forceps, vacuum extraction and prolonged labour), early introduction of solids, immune compromise and poor nutrition. Birth trauma is very common and often underplayed; the stress on the cranium (skull) and spine (particularly in the neck) can create misalignments of the vertebrae and cranial bones and these areas of dysfunction result in pressure on the nervous system. Since the nervous system and immune system work together to create optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately spinal misalignments create stress in the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response and increased susceptibility to infections. Furthermore spinal and cranial

Early cow’s milk consumption (including formula) often predisposes a child to otitis media, this being one of the most significant contributions to middle ear problems in children due to its mucus forming properties. Introduction of solids before 6 months can place a strain on an infant’s immature digestive tract predisposing that child to immune related problems and allergies. Compromised immunity leads to susceptibility to infections more so if there are poor dietary habits and cranial/spinal issues.

Holistic management is the key here: evaluation for the presence of spinal/ cranial problems by a chiropractor, dietary

modifications including the elimination of cow’s milk, and supplementation to support immune function. Fortunately for me a miracle happened that stopped the ‘drug taking merry-goround’ and my health was restored. For the first time someone had taken the time to look at me as a ‘whole being’, rather than just a ‘sum of my parts’- that someone was a chiropractor and I owe my life to chiropractic. My family are now ambassadors for alternate health creation, and how true health (not just the absence of symptoms or dis-ease) can be achieved; our lifestyles have altered to reflect our understanding and deep respect for how sacred our body’s innate intelligence enabling optimal function without interference. Family Chiropractic are holding Free Kids Health Checks, so call us now on 01434 605688 to find out more!

Wondering where life will take you next?

It’s all in the pot Hello readers, Where does the time go! And I’m wondering how many of you took up the challenge in my last article and made the pie? Honing your skills in preparation for this year’s Christmas dinner. But as we find spring just around the corner, I doubt many of you at this moment in time will want to even contemplate that thought. Let’s face it, by now, most of you will be fed up with stews and steaming puddings and are looking forward, perhaps, to something a little less fussy to prepare: a simple green salad, fresh fruit or meat grilled simply on the barbecue. It doesn’t seem to matter what we put on the table so long as it’s easy and comes out of a packet, jar, tin or frozen and the least work it involves the better. Quality food takes a back seat again. Of course, supermarkets are first to get in on the act with all the spring bulbs and plants now appearing on the shelves. Everyone is now being subconsciously guided without even realising it; directed to purchase what the supermarket promotes. Don’t worry, we all fall prey to this strategy, as we long for warmer days and lighter nights, and the urge to be outdoors. The last thing on our mind is food. Everything but the kitchen sink is designated a place in our busy lives: holidays, events, weekend breaks; interesting isn’t it. I’d say there are a few of you reading this and hear you saying – that’s me. Yes, convenience plays a big part in our everyday lives – that’s what living in the 21st century is all about. We have every gadget imaginable to prepare food, but I suspect most are hidden in the back of cupboards never to be seen again until something else takes our fancy. Take a look, see what you’ve got in there, bring it out of retirement and use it. If all you have is a pan that’s fine, that’s all you need. See my recipe below.

58

For this recipe you will need - a large sauté or frying pan.

Chicken and bean casserole 4 chicken thighs 5 waxy potatoes

(New potatoes such as charlotte are best)

4 large tomatoes 2 tins of cannellini beans 4 fresh garlic cloves - crushed 1 tsp dried mixed herbs (Herbs de Provence)

4 Chicken stock cubes 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp oil Salt and pepper for seasoning

if you’re using a casserole dish cover with tin foil. Cook in a moderate oven 160°C/gas mark 5 for 35 minutes. Note: make sure the frying pan you’re using is heatproof. Enjoy!

Method Pre heat the oven to 160°C/gas mark 5 Peel and cook the potatoes – drain and set aside. Season the thighs with salt and pepper and place in the hot oil skin side down. If you wish, you can remove the skin first before frying for a healthier option. Fry until just browned on the underside, and remove from the pan. Remember the chicken will continue to cook in the casserole.

www.elizapepperpot.co.uk info@elizapepperpot.co.uk

Make up the stock cubes to 1 litre of boiling water. Roughly chop the onions and quarter the tomatoes, place in the pan the chicken was cooked in. After a minute or so, add the garlic; it is important that you don’t add the garlic first as it burns very quickly and leaves a bitter aftertaste. Fry until the onions and tomatoes are just softened. Cut the cooked potatoes into thick slices or cubes. Place the chicken back in the pan along with the onions, tomatoes, potatoes, cannellini beans and stock. Add the herbs and Worcestershire sauce - taste to see if it needs more seasoning and add accordingly. Place a lid on the pan;

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? 5 year guarantee on new double glazing.

relationship when there are clearly unresolved issues? I am very fortunate to have forged a professional relationship with a local relationship counsellor whose area of expertise lies in assisting couples and individuals to heal or move on from broken relationships.

If only the emergence from old relationships into the world of starting afresh were so predictable and reliable. Irrespective of the length of a relationship, there is always some level of sadness and mourning when it ends, but for some people, moving on from a previous relationship can prove some overwhelmingly difficult that it causes loss of function in all aspects of the person’s life.

Put away all stereotyped 1970’s images of marriage guidance, this is emotional maturity 21st century style. Graeme works with couples, whether or not they want to try to save the relationship, with individuals to help them come to terms with what has happened and move on, and with entire families where it is appropriate to involve the children.

In my profession, relationship conflict and pain goes with the territory. On the other hand, I am neither trained nor equipped to deal with the emotional side of relationship breakdown; my role is to resolve practical issues arising within a prescribed legal framework. It is something of an oxymoron: relationship and marriage breakdown is a distinctly emotive issue, and yet the solutions I offer as a family law solicitor largely eschew taking account of how either party may be feeling. So how do I support a client who is faced with making practical decisions about a future beyond the

He is firmly of the view that many people instruct solicitors too early, simply because they do not know who else to turn to. He is right that this can lead to unclear and conflicted decision making, which is both flawed and reactionary. He helps people to work through feelings of grief, fear, anger and depression, and supports them towards self-compassion, mutual respect and ultimately the ability to move on from the relationship and the hurt. Whilst this kind of work is not a new phenomenon, what is a significant shift is the legal profession’s willingness to acknowledge that feelings and emotions need to be dealt with and supported to allow for a more effective and balanced resolution of any practical and legal issues.

Having always sought to take an holistic approach to advising my clients, this is an ancillary service that I am very pleased to be able to offer. Whether the client spends time in counselling before returning to me, or whether the two professional approaches work concurrently, the result is a smoother, clearer and less painful transition for all involved, and not just the client receiving the counselling. The sessions are of course entirely separate from my involvement and entirely confidential, but many clients would not be aware of, or consider such a service if I were not able to make the referral. Acknowledging and accepting the end of a relationship can mean more than getting a Decree Absolute. Helping a client to move on is as important as advising on the law.
