JOY THIGPEN ON STYLING YOUR

WEDDING CEREMONY This season, so many weddings will take place outdoors and if not, you’re certainly going to take photos outside of your venue. We asked styling expert Joy Thigpen to what to keep in mind when crafting a ceremony, from decor to landscape.

Your good side Put yourself in the best light. Orient your ceremony around the time and placethe light will be most pleasing. It will make your pictures and the experience itself more beautiful. If you don’t know when or where that would be, ask your photographer-— they’ll be happy to tell you! It will make their job easier and their work look better!

Mother Nature If you’re getting married under a tree, don’t stand directly in front of the tree’s trunk. Stand off to the side, under the arch of the limbs— unless the tree is incredibly large or dense or straight with no low-lying limbs. If you stand directly in front of the tree, you can visually block or even merge with the tree. If you stand to the side, the tree will frame you.

Minimalism Don’t over do it on the decor. If you’re getting married in a beautiful outdoor location, be careful not to compete with 36 | tullemag. com

or distract from the environment. If you’ve got this amazing view, for example, don’t block it with a big dense floral arch.

Your budget If you are on a limited budget, put most of your effort into creating a strong focal point and scene where you’ll be standing. Don’t worry as much about the places that fall outside of that frame. If people have a beautiful place to look, they won’t notice what is beside or behind them as much.

Your background Styling is about more than just making it pretty. Think creatively about how to incorporate traditions and rituals that are meaningful to you and leave the rest. Consider how you would do your wedding if you had no preconceived idea of how one was “supposed” to be. The route to making your ceremony the most beautiful is to make it genuinely authentic to who you both are deep down. —joythigpen.com

WEDDING DESIGN Bringing in furniture to create a unique wedding design is growing in popularity, but it’s all about the manner in which you arrange it. Krista Jon of Archive Rentals shares how to bring in rentals that play to your wedding’s overall feel.

Be practical Take the opportunity to create a beautiful space out of a functional necessity! From a vintage vanity dripping with florals used as an escort card display, to a custom chalkboard program that doubles as a piece of art! There are so many unique ways to add personality and design to your big day that double as functional!

Be colorful Don’t be afraid of color and pattern! Adding a pop of color or an unexpected print to a lounge or tablescape is a great way to add interest to your decor.

Be consistent Make your big day cohesive! When working with multiple vendors, it’s so important to make sure that everyone understands the vision you have for your wedding! I love when we get to design florals (Krista Jon for Archive Florals) and use our collection of rentals (Archive Rentals) for a wedding, that way we can 38 | tullemag. com

make sure that the wedding is seamless.

Be chic Don’t overlook the dining chairs. We truly believe that dining chairs are so impactful when it comes to the overall look of a wedding reception. It’s so worth the investment to swap out those standard chairs for ones that will add so much prettiness to your big day!

Be creative We love involving the groom in creating a lounge that he loves. Forget the groom’s cake and go for a groom’s lounge! What guy wouldn’t love a cigar or whiskey lounge? My partner and I (Crosby + Jon) even designed a surprise donut shop for a lucky groom who happened to be a police officer! Needless to say, he was so surprised and that extra special touch made his day that much sweeter. —kristajon.com archiverentals.com crosbyandjon.com

PHOTOGRAPHER MARIA LAMB ON WEDDING

TIMELINES Ask any given bride, the hours seem to fly by on your wedding day! It’s easy to become disorganized when you’re feeling short on time, but photographer Maria Lamb explains to Tulle the importance of a timeline to keep things running smoothly!

Work with your photographer This is huge! Make sure you chat with your photographer about your timeline to make sure there is enough time to capture every detail of your day. It’s important so you as a couple aren’t rushed and you can enjoy the whole process. This will only add to your day and enhance the moments you have with your bridal party, family, and most importantly, your soon-to-be spouse.

Hire a day-of coordinator The last thing you want to be doing on your wedding day is running around to make sure things are in place. This job should NEVER be for the bride or the groom. You shouldn’t lift a finger. Having a coordinator will eliminate the hundreds of questions directed at you and ensure a smooth wedding just as you planned it. Working with a coordinator increases the communication between venders and allows your photographer to zone in on what they need to focus on.

Clear your space Have a bridesmaid clear the space in your 40 | tullemag. com

getting ready room and have a designated area for everyone’s things. This creates a clean and less frantic atmosphere and, of course, better photos.

Plan a first look I do love the anticipation of the groom seeing the bride for the very first time as she’s walking down the aisle. However, I feel that you can also create that intimate, romantic moment without hundreds of people staring at you and bright flashes going off. First looks, prior to the ceremony, are something I highly recommend. This will give you and your fiance some time before your big day to just be together and enjoy the moment.

Trust your photographer Choose a photographer and vendors you fully trust. That way, you can let everything go and just enjoy the day, the photos and the things that are most important. Also, choose vendors (specifically photographers, videographers and DJ’s) that are well-networked and have a back-up plan in place on your wedding day. —marialamb.co

BIKINI CLEANSE FOUNDER NICOLE POLLARD BAYME ON

GETTING BRIDAL FIT We all have goals of getting fit before the big day and too often, life gets in the way. We asked BikiniCleanse™ founder Nicole Pollard Bayme for her best tips on shedding those extra five pounds that are both fun and easy!

Workspace to gym Why waste 8 hours at a desk when you could be burning calories at the same time? Think of your office as a small exercise room. During lunch, use your chair for bench dips or do lunges from one end of the room to the other. If you want to take this workout to the next level, bring in an exercise ball! It’s perfect for ab exercises and good for your back when working on the computer.

Sneak in a workout It’s amazing what an extra 5 minutes of exercise can do. In addition to your trips to the gym, try adding some yoga in the morning, take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk to the store for your groceries. You can burn an additional 50 calories or more without breaking your busy schedule!

Try something new It’s easy to get stuck in a fitness rut when your schedule is packed. Try a spin class or an aerial yoga class! This will help 42 | tullemag. com

adverse your muscle memory and work you out in places that may not have had enough attention. Plus, learning something new is always a fun challenge!

Plan and exercise We all know how stressful last minute wedding planning can be. Have the caterers been paid? Is the seating chart right? To deal with the stress of planning, try exercising with your fiance to burn some calories and burn that energy! This will help keep you stress-free and work off those extra pounds in the process.

More pillow talk Who says working out needs to be a chore? Get some extra play time in with your fiance for a fun and sexy workout! For optimum results, make sure you’re on top or try some, ahem, advanced positions. —bikinicleanse.com

JACIN FITZGERALD ON ENJOYING

wedding planning If you’ve just started planning a wedding, you may be asking yourself if there is a way to enjoy the process. The answer? Yes! We asked industry expert Jacin Fitzgerald what she would tell brides who are in the beginning stages of designing their day.

Slow down! Take a moment to enjoy being engaged. The wedding flies by! That amazing time where the excitement is building and you’re working together to plan your big day is something to savor— even through the guest list and seating chart challenges.

Choose your priorities wisely Decide on your top two priorities for the big day. Whether you want the best band in town or the most incredible venue, you need to agree on what’s most important to you so you can allocate your budget accordingly and avoid monetary stress about less important items.

Hire a wedding planner Biased, yes I am, but if you have a busy job and little time for dealing with logistics, a wedding planner will save you time, stress and in many instances, money. My goal is to work with my clients to spend their money wisely (see #2) and not frivolously. And rather than accept44 | tullemag. com

ing commission on rentals and other goods, I extend that discount directly to my clients. I also want to partner with my clients so they can still enjoy the planning parts they were looking forward to most, without feeling like they’re missing out on the “good stuff” like tastings, linen colors and flower mock-ups.

Keep your eyes on the prize Don’t get so caught up in the details that you forget what’s waiting for you at the end of the aisle— your spouse is the most important detail of all and once the confetti has been cleaned up and sparklers have burnt out, your marriage officially begins. It’s the best part of the entire wedding!

Listen to your partner If your fiancé wants to wear that pretty blue tie he’s had his eyes on, but it doesn’t 100% match with the custom chambray napkins you chose? Let the man have his tie. Remember it’s about both of you. —jacinfitzgerald.com
