One of my favorite quotes from F. Scott Fitzgerald and it could not ring more true. There’s something so special about this time of year and in turn, the weddings this time of year. The deeper, richer colors, the sparkling, glittering details against bold backdrops, the incorporation of lush greenery and natural elements.

MIX AND MATCH Remember the time that all of your best friends showed up at that party, wearing totally different outfits that coincidentally complimented each other? Neither do we.

MELISSA VOSSLER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BELLA BRIDESMAIDS

Mixing and matching bridesmaid dresses is a modern concept that allows individuality and coordination to live happily ever after, and we are all for it! But sending your girls into the wild all alone to find their piece of the puzzle can be stressful for them and disastrous for your wedding album. A killer eclectic mix may appear natural and organic, but the truth is, a successful blend comes with careful thought and planning. In other words: the “effortless look” takes some serious effort. So if you love the concept but are intimidated 24 | tullemag. com

by the process, follow these tips from Bella Bridesmaids for coordinating your Pinterestworthy party! Determine a single starting point Maybe it’s a special dress that would be perfect for your Maid of Honor or maybe it’s a perfect shade of blush pink. Whatever it is— saying “I do!” to one detail is very helpful, because it gives you something to build off of. It’s easy to get confused and overwhelmed, but once you choose one thing you love, you’ll find yourself able to decide on the next one.

Do your homework Jumping in with your girls may sound like a nice team building exercise, but it’s important to do some work solo if you want everyone singing Kumbaya when it’s over. Scheduling a Preview Appointment at a Bella Bridesmaids showroom will help you narrow down the options, leaving you with a diverse but manageable pool of pre-approved styles and colors. If something is missing or not working the way you’d hoped, you can always take a step back and adjust— but the absence of excess factors will keep everyone on the same page and ensure that you leave you with a look you’ll love! BRUMLEY & WELLS COURTESY OF BELLA BRIDESMAIDS

Know thyself (and do whatever you want!) Keep in mind that not everything you see on wedding blogs is perfect for your day. Personality plays a big part in wedding planning and every decision should leave you comfortable and excited. That means mixing and matching looks for your bridesmaids should only be done in a way that you’re totally into. Some people are A-OK with any combination of colors, styles and fabrics. Some people are cool with varied lengths, while others only want to mix tones if the dress is the same. Maybe you require even numbers or you’re down with tulle, but not taffeta. MUNSTER ROSE ON FLORALS FOR YOUR

SEASONAL CELEBRATION Fall and winter bring a wealth of beautiful hues, textures and blooms to the forefront of the wedding industry each year. We asked top floral designer Jackie Reisenauer of Munster Rose to fill us in on how to incorporate these seasons into florals.

Embrace the season If you’ve decided to get married in the fall or winter (especially in the Midwest), you must be ready to embrace the weather and the season. Use colors, flowers and foliage that look autumnal or wintry. Light springtime hues amidst a rich background of fall foliage? It’s neither natural nor pleasing to look at. Rather, fit your floral to the season.

Be flexible

In the floral world, things change fast as the season turns from summer to fall. Be open to small, last minute foliage and floral substitutions. Those gorgeous Cornelian Cherries that were fruiting (and perfect) two weeks before your wedding may be overripe and a little mushy by the time your big day rolls around. But don’t worry! An experienced designer can sub them out with another beautiful fall berry that will be popping up just as the cherries are dropping out.

Don’t limit yourself We told you to embrace the season, but 30 | tullemag. com

that doesn’t mean you have to go all-out oak leaves and pine boughs. Remember, it’s a wide, wide world. When it’s winter here, it’s summer somewhere else. Like Chile, for example. Chilean peonies, which can be more expensive during the summer months, are actually in season during our winter months.

Candles, candles, candles It starts getting dark early in the fall and winter. But there’s an upside to a four o’ clock sunset— you can fill the afternoon with candlelight. Go crazy with candles in your decor. They immediately add warmth and interest to your tabletop display.

Protect your bouquet

A snowy, wintry setting is beautiful for photos, but if the temperature is below 33 degrees, your flowers will be sad. And if they’re white, even sadder. Talk to your florist about making a secondary smaller bouquet for outdoor photos or schedule your photos so outdoor shots happen after the ceremony. —munsterrose.com

FIORE BEAUTY SHARES HOW TO CREATE

ULTIMATE BRIDAL BEAUTY There are many plates to keep spinning during the wedding planning process, but beauty should not be left to the last minute. Glam guru Janel Benson of Fiore Beauty gives Tulle the perfect recipe for looking your best on your big day.

Assemble your team Make sure you have a beauty team you love doing your hair and makeup and if you can, keep them around for touchups. Some brides don’t see the value in making beauty a priority like they would their photographer or venue, but it’s a bummer to look back on photos of your wedding if you’re not thrilled with how you looked. Having your artist there for touch-ups also makes it nice knowing someone else is taking care of the details like worn lipstick.

Keep it subtle Figure out your hair color at least a month before and trim hair as needed based on your wedding hairstyle. Stay away from any drastic changes right before—bangs, layers and extreme highlights are never a good plan.

Tend to your skin You want your makeup to look flawless, so exfoliate at least a week before 32 | tullemag. com

your big day and make sure to moisturize! Again, the week of your wedding is not a good time to do a chemical peel or switch your skin care regimen.

Make time for beauty sleep Get plenty of rest. Makeup can cover a lot of things, but can’t hide you from looking tired.

Remember to enjoy Smile, relax and enjoy all the festivities! There’s so much planning that goes into your wedding and it all goes by so quick. Don’t forget to take it all in— the friends, family, emotions. It’s time to celebrate! —fiorebeauty.com

PEARL AND GODIVA ON HOW TO PLAN

YOUR WINTER WEDDING Instead of trying to recreate that summer feeling you adore at warm weather weddings, give the charm of the season a chance! Pearl & Godiva Co-owner and Creative Director Sheena McDonald Murray shares how to bring that winter magic to life for your big day. We received an inquiry from a sweet bride-tobe who had her dream wedding all worked out, from the sun-drenched terrace, pastel blooms, sheer white linens and outdoor dining. But the problem was that it was to take place on December 27th in Northern Europe, where it would be dreary, wet and in the low 30s. What she was looking for was not ideal, but what we felt was more of a pity was that she was ignoring the beauty of the season.

Make it glisten and shine Embrace the darker evenings and go wild with flickering candle light. Be bold with metallics, and watch the landscape of your wedding glitter.

Snuggle up Our hearts melt when we see a bride snuggled in a warm, woolen cardigan. That cozy comfort juxtaposed over a flowing ethereal gown— bliss. Be creative with your outer layers, looking to soft wools, cashmere and hand-spun yarns.

34 | tullemag. com

Perfect your palette Fall is abundant in the most stunning array of colors, from windfallen leaves to voluptuous berries tumbling off the branch. The rich tones of fall have a never-ending appeal, evocative of the scents and smells of our favorite season.

Soften the tones Winter brings a crisp freshness and the low sun casts a pearly, white glow. Keep your colors muted and effervescent. If any season allows some sparkle, it’s this.

Mind the holiday cheer If your nuptials should fall over the holiday season, beware of the holiday cheer being too cheery. Consult with your venue ahead of time and make sure that your stunning spaces won’t be cluttered with other decor that could clash horribly with your own aesthetic. Leave the Christmas crackers for home. —pearlandgodiva.com

JENNA KUTCHER ON CREATING YOUR DAY WITH

stress-free planning Let’s be honest, planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful endeavors. As a photographer and former bride, Jenna Kutcher knows the struggle and sees it firsthand. But you’re in luck! She’s here to share how to make it through with your sanity intact. I know before our wedding I had never planned a soiree for 200+ people, I had never assembled invitation suites or made a menu. Wedding planning can be a lot of things, and stressful is one of them. Your wedding day is the greatest day of your life; your worlds collide, all of your favorite people are in the same place at the same time, and you are finally married to the love of your life. It’s all amazing and perfectly imperfect but I want to take the chance to save you a little stress while you plan the best party of your life!

Remember that you are planning a marriage One of the easiest ways to check yourself before you wreck yourself is to remember that after your dancing shoes come off, you are a wife. If you look at your future and the hundreds and thousands of days you will get to spend together, the pressure will lift from the one day you are consumed by. Yes, your wedding is amazing but so is the fact that you are married. Be the kind of wife you want to be while you are planning your big day. In the big scheme of life, the little things won’t matter. 36 | tullemag. com

Prioritize your budget Let me spoil a secret, weddings are not cheap. It’s so important early on to look at your budget and prioritize. Think of the things that are the absolute most important to you and find the perfect vendors to execute on your big day. For us, we knew that photography would be important but flowers were not, so we splurged on our photographers and got our flowers from the famers’ market! Whether your budget is big or small, take the time to really prioritize the big wedding items so that you can disperse the financials appropriately.

Follow your heart This sounds fluffy, but I’m being totally serious. This is your wedding, not your mothers (sorry moms!. This is your debut as a couple and a chance to show off the things you love, what makes you unique; this is your party. Of course, you want

to ensure that your friends and family have an amazing time but don’t get caught in the game of people pleasing (you will always lose). Team up as a couple, figure out what you want your day to be, incorporate your most important family and friends and let them know what’s important to you, what is non-negotiable and how they can help you execute one heck of a party!

Step away from the planning No really, step away. While we were planning our day, we would plan specific dates where there was one strict rule: no wedding talk. Put that binder down, step away from the seating charts and take a deep breath. Remember when you were just dating and you weren’t consumed with RSVPs, centerpieces, cake and lace linens? Yeah, me neither. Take a little time away so that you can reconnect as a couple, after all, you will never be engaged again so use that word “fiancé” with pride and enjoy every minute. Too many couples wish away their engagement and I just want to tell them, “This is such a wonderful chapter in your story! Enjoy planning your marriage, envisioning your future and spending a few Saturdays tasting cake!”

Hire vendors you trust Hire wedding professionals who love their job, know what they are doing and are the experts you need to guide you through your wedding day. You’ve never done this before, we get that! Let us help you plan an epic party, because guess what? If you are having the best day ever, so are we. I can’t stress the importance of assembling a team that you love, that supports your vision. If you have to micromanage your vendors or if you feel like you are on an island all alone planning your day, you will want to pull your hair out. Be very considerate as you curate your team, make sure you mesh well with your vendors and hire people who want to invest in your life and your wedding day! It will make all of the difference! Wedding planning can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. I hope that you put your marriage before your wedding and realize that it’s just one glorious, imperfect party where you are supported as you whisper the vows that you will rely on for the rest of your days. Make the process of planning that event fun, keep it light, follow your heart and when it gets too stressful, take a step back. Happy planning, darlings. —jennakutcher.com

ELIZABETH MESSINA ON HOW TO CHOOSE A

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER Your wedding day lasts for a few hours, but the photos last for a lifetime. Choosing that someone to capture moments for you is a crucial part of planning your event, so we’ve asked top wedding photographer Elizabeth Messina to share how to make sure you’re on the right path. Here’s what you should be looking for in this specific vendor.

Research their work First, do you like their photographs? This may seem obvious, but really take your time to look through a photographer’s website. Do you like most of the photos you see? Loving the dress in an image is not the same as loving a photograph of a dress.

Trust yourself Your sister or best friend may love a photographer, but their images may not really move you. A wedding is perhaps one of the most personal events in your life, so chose a photographer whose photos you love.

Establish a connection Reach out to those whose work you like the most. Try and have a conversation with the photographer (of course, meeting in person is a good way to connect, but not always possible). A photographer is intimately involved in most aspects of your wedding day, so having a personal connection is important. You want to 38 | tullemag. com

To see more of Elizabeth’s work, find her on Instagram @elizabethmessina and on elizabethmessina.com.

feel at ease around your photographer. The more calm you feel, the better your photos will be.

Talk through the timeline Be sure to include your photographer in figuring out the timing for your wedding day. Typically, a planner will create a schedule for your wedding day, but just try to include your photographer in the conversation so they can give you feedback on the areas where they may need a little more time to capture the photos that are important to you.

Mind your budget There are talented photographers at all price points, so be mindful of your budget. Wedding photographs are incredibly special and if you are patient and thoughtful in your search, you will find a photographer in your budget that you feel comfortable with and whose images you love. Remember, just like your perfect mate, you only need one perfect photographer for your wedding day.

RACHAEL ANN LUNGHI ON THE FALL AND WINTER

COLOR PALETTE “I think my favorite part of fall is the colors,” says Rachael Ann Lunghi, event designer and stylist at Lace & Likes and Siren Floral Co. Using the colors of the season can bring your wedding to life and cast a bold, rich and at times, cozy aura over the event, no matter the weather. It can be tricky, so we asked about working with these darker hues this time of year.

Visit the flower market Even though I live in Southern California, I cannot wait for the burnt oranges and yellows, deep reds and pinks and all of the more dramatic hues that fall just naturally creates. You can still enjoy all of these colors—even though the trees don’t necessarily change—just by heading to the flower market. When the fall comes, the market is such a magical place. There’s liquid maple branches everywhere, perismmons, pomegranates, red charm peonies, romantic antikes galore and all kinds of other gorgeous colors and product to choose from. Fall and spring are without a doubt my two favorite times to shop at the market with what’s available.

Go dramatic

Some of my favorite weddings (at right) incorporated a more dramatic fallinspired palette. Rich scarlett colors are

contrasted with wild foliage, all to create a romantic, lush effect. My go-to list to include in the fall: Pieter B garden roses, red charm peonies, persimmon branches, marigolds, fall leaves and branches, Koko Loko garden roses, romantic antikes, deep red amaryllis. From left to right: Renata Stone, Big Bear Photo; Megan Guerrero, Studio Castillero

Historically, brides collected their wedding items in trunks called Trousseaus. They would store and organize their most precious items in a Trousseau and as an homage to the past, Trousseau & Co has created a modernized version of this trunk, complete with pockets and space for everything the contemporary bride needs on her wedding day. Inspired by old hat boxes, the Trousseau is lined in velvet, the perfect material to protect your most important belongings. Each Trousseau is monogrammed with brass initials and made to order specifically for the bride and her bridesmaids.

We knew the hilltop of Chateau Le Dome at Saddlerock Ranch was the perfect place for us the second we stepped foot onto it. We wanted our wedding day to feel like an intimate gathering, elegant yet organic. A local, farm-to-fork dinner served family style at long tables covered with lush greenery and textured blooms. Lights, candles and chandeliers twinkling everywhere. Our family and friends kept saying it felt like a scene from a fairytale, that they had never been surrounded by so much love in one place. I always say “love is in the details.” Our wedding was full of little details that came together to create the softest and most romantic day. I picked every piece—from the rose gold flatware to the sparkling rosé toast—to create a warm and heartfelt atmosphere. Many things were custom or handmade, which made them all the more special to us. Derek has a love for creating music and I have a passion for writing. Toss cones rolled from vintage sheet music and old romance novels were the perfect way to blend those two things into our wedding day. While I was visiting for my bridal shower, my mother-in-law gave me the most special gift—Derek’s grandfather’s wedding band, which was engraved by his grandmother with “My love forever.” I sewed a piece of lace from my gown around the ring and snuck it into a tiny pocket in Derek’s suit jacket, so that his grandfather would be there with us and close to his heart on our wedding day.

My biggest piece of advice for current and future brides (besides to enjoy your engagement!) is to create a dream team. Find people who you love to be around and will love working together. This was one of our highest priorities when picking out our vendors and we cannot imagine our wedding day without a single one of them. Though our wedding was beautiful, what we will always treasure most are the words and love from our family and friends that day. We asked Derek’s father, who means the world to us both, to officiate our marriage. It was the most heartfelt ceremony I could ever imagine and it meant so much to have someone so special to us stand by our side as we read the vows we wrote for each other. Our guests are still telling us to this day they wish that they could go back and live our wedding day over and over again. We feel the same way. —From the Bride
