Volunteer Leaders Share the

“Why”

of Giving to Cancer Research For 30 years, Gateway for Cancer Research has been bringing together the shared passion and collective drive of cancer researchers, physicians and philanthropists to advance transformational cancer research at some of the world’s most renowned institutions. By investing exclusively in innovative, early stage clinical trials that are the critical first step in evaluating new cancer medicines, treatments and therapies, Gateway helps to give those facing a cancer diagnosis more options, more time and better quality of life. “The driving force behind everything Gateway for Cancer Research does is, of course, our patients and helping them live longer and feel better while we dedicate ourselves to finding a cure for their disease,” said Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, Founder and Vice Chairman of Gateway for Cancer Research. “Cancer clinical trials are vital to finding a cure for cancer – a disease that touches every person in one way or another.” Mr. Richard J Stephenson, Founder and Chairman of Gateway, and Dr. Stephenson’s passion for developing improved treatments, and ultimately cures for cancer, is evident through the support they provide the organization. Their dedication to cancer patients and unrelenting commitment to advancing the future of cancer care is amplified by their generous financial support allowing Gateway to allocate 99 percent of every dollar donated directly to cancer clinical trials. “As business professionals and philanthropists who embrace the privilege of helping others, we are guided by a moral code: When you see someone who is less well off than yourself, and you are in a unique position to do something about their plight, without harm to self, family or Lord, you simply step into the opportunity and do it. Our family is guided by this adage in all we do and we’re fortunate to be a part of this generous community who clearly are driven by a similar sentiment,” said Mr. Stephenson.

Photo: Bob & Dawn Davis Photography & Design

To fund its life-changing mission, Gateway also relies on the generosity of forward-thinking supporters and dedicated volunteers. Giving of their time and talent and recognizing the value of investing in cancer research, volunteers are vital to Gateway’s success. Meet three volunteer leaders – Molly Stockley, Jill Krigsten Riley and Tawnya Bond. Their many contributions through

service on the board of directors and planning committee of Vino con Stelle, Gateway’s signature Arizona fundraiser, help bring to life Gateway’s mission to change the face of cancer care forever. Here, in their own words, is what drives their passion.

Molly Stockley

Jill Krigsten Riley

Tawnya Bond

What inspired you to become involved with Gateway for Cancer Research? Molly: I have been a volunteer and donate annually in the name of my friend, Kristi, who lost her battle to cancer at the age of 28. Gateway for Cancer Research is important to me because it focuses on funding Phase I and II clinical trials. This is where the greatest impact is in fighting cancer. Tawnya: Like most of us, my enthusiasm for this organization stems from immediate members of my family who have both survived and suffered losses. Jill: I am truly motivated by family and friends who have confronted cancer. I lost my grandmother and aunt to breast cancer and most recently, two dear friends, who fought so hard, all succumbing to this dreadful disease. I have witnessed many friends who have had cancer and survived thanks to research and clinical trials.

What makes Gateway different than other charities you have worked with? Jill: I donate my time as a volunteer and Vino con Stelle committee member to Gateway because I hear the progress that Gateway for Cancer Research is making in such a short amount of time. Funding for these trials goes directly to cuttingedge research. Tawnya: The fiscal differentiation, 99 cents of every dollar raised supports the mission, directly funding cancer clinical trials.

Also, the exceptional patient experience. I recently joined the board of directors for Gateway and it’s clear, when moving to approve a new trial for funding, that we are only interested in research which places the patient front and center of trial design.

Why is Gateway important? Molly: Gateway truly humanizes trials. I get to witness people who have directly and indirectly benefited from Gateway’s installment of research and clinical trials. And they don’t focus on just one cancer type, ensuring that innovative research, practice changing discoveries, can happen for anyone diagnosed with cancer. Gateway is saving lives!! Tawnya: With the ubiquitous nature of this disease, unfortunately, we will all very likely be faced with a close friend or relative, or even personally experience hearing those dreaded words, “You have cancer.” We need an organization like Gateway for Cancer Research to pioneer the way toward improved treatments and ultimately cures for cancer today and for generations to come. Leaders like Dr. Stacie and Richard, Jill, Tawnya and Molly have 18 million

“why’s” to support cancer research – that’s the number of people worldwide who will learn they have cancer this year. Gateway is driving forward the transformational research that will bring hope and healing to cancer patients today and put an end to cancer as we know it.

LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to May By Bill Dougherty

Hello everyone. We hope you survived the holidays and the crazy month of January. There is a glimmer of hope with recent strides in medicine, that things may return to normal by this spring or summer. While this is good news for our country and the world; it is even better news for the fundraising community, which like so many other entities have been paralyzed for the last year. Having learned a lot about our country and each other, all we can do is move forward and treat one another with dignity and respect. We are fortunate to live in the greatest country in the world. Elsewhere, famed talk show host Larry King has died. I will always thank Julie Bowe, who was instrumental in securing my interview with the talk show great a decade ago. It was one of the greatest hours spent with an industry giant. As I have said many times in the past, you never know what you will get when you interview a celebrity. There is a special place for Jane Fonda, Johnny Carson, Donna Summer and Chevy Chase and I do not think it is above us. You get the picture? In this issue, we are pleased to welcome several guest editors. They include Laurene Hayden, an ayurvedic healer, wellness coach and counselor. John Spead, a personal trainer and nutrition counselor.

Hillary Littleton, who comes to us from the public relations and events wing of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Her first offering showcases the long life of recently deceased designer Pierre Cardin. Famed motivational speaker, fashion designer, educator and 2004 Trendsetter Patsy Lowry; will share inspirational topics and guides to personal success and entertaining. We are delighted to welcome these fine people! GOTCHA! You all remember a blonde and blue-eyed wannabe socialite with the wicked glint in her eyes. She thought she was on the fast track to high society, only to be dumped by her high-profile attorney boyfriend. His kids detested her, and he quickly married someone else. This is the same woman who also got into a near physical fight in the parking lot of All Saints school with a hugely successful real estate agent. Well, the other day her special order at AJ’s Fine Foods did not arrive; she not only took out the checker helping her but also two store managers much to the horror of affluent shoppers in the specialty store. Some things never change ‌

CHECKING IN WITH LAURENE HAYDEN

The Nature of Healing: Wisdom of the Ages from Yoga & Ayurveda “The great task is accomplished by a series of small acts.” – Lao Tsu The blank pages of a new calendar remind us that we can make our lives whatever we want them to be!

Trouble is, New Year’s resolutions often don’t bring about lasting change. Research shows that after 6 months less than half the people who made resolutions have stuck with them. That number drops to 10% after one year. But there are strategic ways to create the beautiful healthy life you desire! The question is: “What can I do to maximize my chances of making changes which will have a lasting, positive effect in my life?” The wisdom of Yoga & Ayurveda holds the key. These traditions teach us that lasting change takes place gradually, gently, over a period-of-time. Every habit, action, consumable and illness; in fact, everything in our lives; is there because it has served some purpose, at some level of our being, at some time in our lives. So, rather than just trying to use will power to stop doing something you perceive is having a negative effect; it is helpful to first ask yourself, “What need is it connected with, now or in the past?” Once you can understand this aspect of your choice or circumstance, you can begin to develop healthier ways to get those same needs met or realize that the needs of the past don’t even serve you today. “If we lack emotional intelligence, whenever stress rises, the human brain switches to autopilot and has an inherent tendency to do more of the same …” Robert K. Cooper, PhD, NYT Bestselling Author Emotional Intelligence includes the state of self-awareness. At the unconscious level, we operate from habit. Using the tools of presence, yoga and mindfulness from a place of awareness; we can observe our own behaviors, including thoughts, words and actions. Take it up a notch to self-awareness and we begin a new habit of regular self-observation that leads to questioning, evaluating and considering positive change. Deepak Chopra calls this our “witness consciousness”, that aspect of us that can look upon ourselves as if from a clear vantage point above, and we can cultivate this habit as a foundation for lasting change. “Emotional intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding and

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray By Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson CEO The idea of a Corvette with the engine located behind the driver is nothing new; car enthusiasts have been dreaming of a mid-engine Corvette since the mid-60s – and for 2020 that’s what we got. The 8th-generation Corvette has arrived and boy, is it a world-beater. My wife Carolyn and I were honored to be at the historic unveiling of this car and made the decision to purchase one right then. The driving dynamics and technology are something to be applauded. GM’s new-generation LT2 small block provides plenty of shove and the C8 is ferociously quick, hitting 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and tearing through the quarter-mile

Legend Rudi Gernreich On April 7, the innovative, gender-bending fashions of 1960s-mod legend Rudi Gernreich come to Phoenix Art Museum in Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich. Organized by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, the major exhibition showcases more than 80 ensembles by the acclaimed designer who created the “monokini” topless swimsuit, the thong, and unisex clothing.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Gernreich, who was Jewish, fled Nazi oppression as a teen and immigrated to Los Angeles, where he faced further discrimination. He eventually found safe haven in the performing arts community and the gay rights movement and started creating fashions that prioritized individuality, non-conformity and liberation. Fearless Fashion highlights Gernreich’s rise to prominence and how his revolutionary work continues to influence fashion trends. “This exhibition is so timely,” said Helen Jean, the Museum’s Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design. “It underscores Gernreich’s rejection of conventional ideas of identity and his commitment to promoting gender fluidity, body positivity and the equality and beauty of all people.”

Lead with listening. Whether you are entering a conversation already in progress or creating one from scratch, active listening allows for context and understanding, especially with controversial subjects.

Avoid off-color humor. Making a quick-witted connection is entertaining, deprecating yourself or others is not, and parties are for celebration.

Avoid conversation domination. Interrupting, blathering on about your exploits, and imposing your will has no place at a lighthearted gathering.

Ask open-ended questions. Be curious by exploring for additional connections with thought-provoking questions.

Share the stage. Allow others to contribute to a discussion and express differing opinions while reserving judgment.

Practice. Review what you liked about past interactions, then practice creating ways to engage others and rehearse in the mirror.

Politely withdraw. Share appreciation with those in your conversation for the exchange, meaningful or not, and politely excuse yourself. Nothing further is required.

Be provocative. Share just enough to pique interest and depart the conversation. Exchange calling cards if there is interest to continue the discussion.

Follow up with a handwritten thank you to create an opportunity for deepening the connection.

Q&A with Your Transition Concierge Q: A:

How did you get into the luxury real estate business?

Q: A:

What does life transitions mean?

Q:

What types of services do you offer?

A:

I offer typical real estatre services, and concierge services ranging from prepping the house to estate sales. I’m also a Real Estate Special Commissioner, and trained mediator, who can help with conflict resolution and ease the stress associated with life transitions. I have the skills and services to really benefit people going through life’s transitions.

When I divorced, my luxury Paradise Valley home was sold through a Real Estate Special Commissioner. It was a tough transition for my family, which drove my passion to help others. I started Your Divorce Concierge, where I offered services related to divorce transitions. This business merged into Your Transition Concierge, when I added real estate services in 2013. My career has blossomed, as my passion is purpose! I now assist clients during any, and all stages of life transitions, especially when a luxury home is involved.

A life transition can be anything ranging from upsizing or downsizing, to divorce and estate liquidations. All of us undergo some life transitions throughout our lives. Basically, any sort of move is a transition. For some, the transition is a ripple, for others, it can be a riptide. Having someone that deals with this everyday can be a source of comfort.

When it comes to court issues, there is often a gap between the legal transaction and the real estate transaction. I fill that gap with Your Transition Concierge, which goes above and beyond the duties and skills of a real estate agent. In short, I assist with compliance for existing legal and financial agreements and court orders. There is no extra fee. In fact, my process streamlines the transaction, and ultimately serves to reduce time, stress and fees. If you or someone you know is in a life transition or just looking for a real estate investment or home, please reach out to me.

DESIGN AND STYLE

At Home With Christopher Coffin By Christopher Coffin You could say that my homes have been like Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor’s husbands. Each one has been my favorite and my last. My current house is such a gem because it is elegant, comfortable and it speaks to the person I am. It functions perfectly for everything I do, from running my business, Christopher K. Coffin Design, to hosting lovely dinner parties. I can’t believe I’ve lived for almost 20 years in my Scottsdale home and there’s peace knowing I’m not looking for anything bigger, better or different. To make your home a place of serenity, here are my tips for making your house – your perfect match. 1) Make quality a priority I’ve never regretted keeping quality in mind for materials and furnishings. A perfect example is my Clive Christen kitchen with Carrera-marble countertops and high-end appliances. I picked them when I remodeled before I moved in and my kitchen still looks like it was installed yesterday. Spend as much up front for quality as your budget will allow. Wait temporarily for something until you can afford it rather than selecting something quickly that could fall apart in a few years and give off a low-quality vibe. 2) Good design is timeless My home itself is basically the same as the day I moved in. I fell in love at first sight with the unique architectural design, including the round room with 20-foot ceilings, which serves as

32

my sunlight-filled home office. I’m still in awe every day I walk into the enormous living room with clerestory windows and exposed beams. I selected a timeless hardwood flooring to replace the dated-looking white carpet that was there before. The room shows off my collections, including vintage portraits of British aristocrats. My Louis Vuitton luggage isn’t hidden away for my next trip, it’s stacked in my living room under an antique desk. My dining room has a beautiful Welsh dresser displaying my treasured collection of antique “Old Paris” dinnerware. These rooms have a classic, sophisticated look and are as breathtaking today as they would have been 100 years ago. 3) A good home is never done You don’t have to live completely free of trends or strong personal styles. When I’ve craved a refresh, minimal changes have gone a long way. Over the years, I’ve traded out fabrics if I wanted a different color or pattern. Let’s say, just for the sake of an example, that the hottest color in the rainbow suddenly becomes lime green. If you want that in your home, work it in with pillows or throws or in other subtle ways. Never opt for a trendy color for things like cabinetry, countertops or your appliances. If you’re ever in doubt, that’s where a professional designer comes in handy. Their expertise can be invaluable for helping you avoid décor mistakes so you can create a home you truly fall in love with forever.

INNER-VIEW WITH A MASTER CRAFTSMAN – RANDY WOLFE/WOLFE WOODWORKING

Design – When Cabinetry Becomes Furniture By Barbara Kaplan, IFDA, ASID Allied Member Randy Wolf is a lover of art and design which he combines with his enormous gift to bring wood to life, so much so that the forms he creates speak to every environment they are placed in.

Tempe, where he builds everything with his own hands and supervises apprentices who are eager to learn, now from him! He has made a huge impact on the quality and craftmanship in our Valley.

He started his apprenticeship at the young age of 17, when he realized woodworking was the music of his soul, and this passion has inspired him through his career to bring life to cabinetry and furniture pieces with his own hands.

Two years ago, Randy took a few weeks sabbatical to explore his passion in Thailand, Cambodia and Bali. He called his journey Eat, Pray, Carve, because he carved side by side with the old-world craftsmen there, to learn their secret techniques.

He began learning his craft in San Francisco, via Skokie, Illinois, from old world craftsmen whose experiences ranged from Historic Victorian Preservation to antique reproduction furniture. He learned trade secrets from these relationships that gave him the ability to reproduce any furniture style from an existing heirloom or photograph. His work transforms spaces and becomes treasures.

Randy loves the challenge of the word personalize. He listens to his clients and helps them interpret their heart’s desires.

Reacquainting with the love of his life Ali, and girlfriend at 13 years of age, eventually brought him to Arizona. Randy set up his inspirational woodworking company in

When commissioned for a project, he encourages his clients to have at least one visit to his shop before the work is completed, so changes can be made to ensure their happiness with the final design. Randy sets up the project in his shop, exactly the way it will be installed, with doors and drawers hung and fit. Randy says, “In addition to creative expression that drives my passion, it is the joy of partnering with clients to give them

interiors that inspire and that they love to live in!” When the homeowner of a Moroccan theme kitchen viewed her kitchen for the first time in the shop, Randy said “The woman squealed with joy for 20 minutes, then spent the rest of the time fanning tears while saying, ’Oh my goodness! Dreams can come true, but this is so much more than we expected!’” Recently, one of his kitchens won first place as the Millwork Industry partner. Over the years, Randy has been published in Luxe, Better Homes and Gardens and Colorado Homes and Lifestyles. Randy Wolfe is a master craftsman who works through his fingers, but his talent truly begins in his heart!

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based ACFC provides physical, social and much-needed financial support directly to families who are managing the health and well-being of a loved one with pediatric cancer. CHARITY SPOTLIGHT – BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE’S

Ellie & Michael Ziegler Invest in Kids Community leaders and philanthropists Ellie and Michael Ziegler have invested $1.5 million in Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) initiative to build out cutting-edge Makerspace Studios in the youth development organization’s 8 branch locations. The initiative will provide opportunities for upwards of 6,000 youth annually in kindergarten through 12th grade to explore, innovate and ultimately fuel interest in Arizona’s growing science and tech career fields. The Zieglers often focus their philanthropy on projects to help youth succeed. In 2012, Ellie and Michael initiated a back-to- school shopping program called Prep Rally with the Scottsdale Boys & Girls Clubs to provide new clothes and shoes to youth and teens in need so that they could return to school with confidence, ready to learn. They continued funding, planning and helping kids shop for six years; inspiring community support and volunteering that has helped to keep the annual shopping event going strong. In 2018, they gave $1 million to complete safety and technical updates and a teen center refresh at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Vestar

PROFILE: COLETTE SKIN STUDIO

Colette Skin Studio Opens in Scottsdale By Beth McRae In a move that illustrates a strong public interest in natural products, veteran esthetician Kimberly Carson has opened Colette Skin Studio in Scottsdale, Ariz. Named after her 10-year-old daughter, the studio carries Biologique Recherche, a holistic skincare line out of Paris. Carson is a native and recently moved back to the Phoenix area from Los Angeles to open her new business. The new studio specializes in natural, pure products and holistic treatments. “The concept behind Colette Skin Studio is to provide personalized skincare for each client and to prove that you can have astonishing results without sacrificing your health for beauty,” said Founder Kimberly Carson. “I’ve been using the Biologique Recherche protocol for many years now and find that the results are second to none.” Founded in the late 1970s by a family of artisanal skincare experts, Biologique Recherche came about through the passion of biologist and physiotherapist duo Yvan and Josette Allouche. They devised an exclusive, customized methodology of cosmetic treatments adapted to every skin type and based on products with a high concentration of active ingredients. Biologique Recherche started as a research and development lab, focusing exclusively on formulating products for beauty professionals who were disappointed by the products available at that time. “Women, in particular, are actively asking for purer skincare products,” Carson added. “They are doing their research and finding that much of what they use is laden

with impurities and chemicals. Biologique Recherche is very on point with that trend. Prior to opening Colette Skin Studio, located at 4225 Brown Ave., in Scottdale, Carson was a longtime esthetician in Los Angeles, with over 25 years of experience. Family ties brought her back to the Phoenix area with her husband and three kids. Carson is one of only two estheticians locally to carry the Biologique Recherche line; she has competed the Biologique Recherche Academy, as part of her training. Prices start at $150 for a 60-minute session. Colette Skincare Studio is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. PIERRE CARDIN RETROSPECTIVE

A Futuristic Fashion Visionary By Hilliary Littleton

Introduction Pierre Cardin. “There’s no one on the planet who is not going to recognize that name,” said the designer’s close friend and fashionista, Amy Fine Collins. And yes, he was one of the most infamous designers with an impressive career – seven decades to be exact. Cardin surpassed the term “fashion designer” as he touched so much in his time on earth. He didn’t use history books to inspire his designs – instead he looked toward the future and invented modern style. Early Years

er, who at the time considered himself to be very ordinary. Immediately following, he worked under Elsa Schiaparelli, and in 1946 at the age of 20, even though he never attended a fashion or tailoring school, he was hired by Christian Dior. As the first tailor working under Mr. Dior, Cardin took part in creating “The New Look” collection. Wanting to break out on his own; in 1950 he created his namesake brand, Pierre Cardin.

Brand Expansion Starting in the 60s, Cardin fell in love with international markets. He believed fashion was global, paving the way for a new customer base. He decided to use Asia as a market for high fashion. He drew inspiration from their culture and opened numerous factories to build the local economies. He also hired Japanese model, Hiroko Matsumoto, to be the face of his advertisements and ultimately his muse. Cardin’s show locales included the Great Wall of China, sands of the Gobi Desert and Moscow’s Red Square. Cardin

Licensing When it came to growing his business, Pierre Cardin knew where the money was - licensing. His multimillion-dollar empire stemmed from licensing his name and designs to more than 800 products. Some of the most creative examples were a 1972 AMC Javelin and an executive jet by Westwind, both completely outfitted in Cardin panache. Beyond this, the wide range of products with the Pierre Cardin license and logo could really only be described as miscellaneous or bizarre. In 1981, his fortunes also bought him the oldest Art Nouveau restaurant in Paris, Maxims, which he absolutely adored. This wide range of brand licenses were seen by some as a complete sell-out. In the fashion industry, it’s common for a fashion brand to extend into cosmetics, perfume, or even home. Yet, Pierre Cardin expanded his branding into just about any knick-knack you could think of. Cardin’s closest confidants have even admitted that his brand may have lost some credibility from these choices, but also gave him the financial cushion to never take out a loan throughout his entire career. Closing Cardin dressed some of the chicest women throughout history including Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow, Marlene Dietrich, Sharon Stone, Naomi Campbell, and his longtime love French actress, Jeanne Moreau. Cardin had often said that his work liberated him. In 1992, he was awarded into the Academy of Fine Arts, the highest honor one can achieve in France. With an impeccable memory, the fashion veteran recounted his entire life’s memories in the House of Cardin documentary, released just 9 months before his death.

41

PIERRE CARDIN RETROSPECTIVE – CONTINUED Pierre Cardin passed away in Paris at the age of 98 due to natural causes on December 29, 2020. His zest for life and passion for his craft stayed with him until the end. Following his death, the fashion world paid tribute. Fellow French designer, Jean-Paul Gauthier, who apprenticed for Cardin in the 70s, thanked him for “opening the doors to fashion and for making my dream possible.” The designer appointed family members and close confidants to lead the business. Cardin once said when asked his secret to longevity, “I have always worked in my own style, which is different from all others. It was always my intention to be different, because that is the only way to last.”

MODERN OYSTERBAR CHOPHOUSE

Seafood and Chops at Their Best! The Verve From the street, this tucked away gem is unassuming. But do not let that fool you . Once inside the posh glass doors, an elegant selection of music plays from overhead ranging from Patula Clark to The Smiths. There is live music on the weekends too. The room is adorned with amber and brighter crystal chandeliers. There are cozy booths, cocktail tables and upper lever banquet. Copper ceilings and an entire wall of chopped wood canvas this eclectic yet elegant mood. The interiors are hip and quietly elegant. But there is more. A beautiful fireside patio awaits complete with high tops and sofa seating. This is all simply at the touch of a switch inside the dining rooms as large firehouse doors roll up to create a truly majestic setting. Guests feel as if they have been transformed to a far away place. These people really know the restaurant business. Starters Since their specialty is oysters and the menu has a lot of different offerings, it is difficult to select just one. We chose the Oysters Rockefeller. There are few places that even serve this 1960s hors d’oeuvre anymore and if they do, they do not measure up to these. They are splendid. You must try them. The warm seafood plater is another must. Scallops, shrimp and king crab round out this truly amazing starter. The fish is soaked in a combination of white wine, garlic and various herbs that make this dish unusual and a splendid first coarse. Once you finish this amazing dish, you are greeted with hot towels, which is such a classy touch. There are also several great starter salads including a chop, a Caesar and a bountiful house salad.

44

All are served with fantastic house-made dressings too. Soups include Manhattan clam chowder, which is hard to find, and a marvelous French onion soup. Try at least one, you will not be disappointed. There are also several large entrĂŠe salads, including a crab louis, a grilled filet and an ahi tuna. All these fine dishes are served with the crunchiest dinner rolls and herb butter imaginable. If you are eating in establishments that have followed the revolting trend of charging for bread; once you try this, you will always return, and they are free! Mains Although this is a tremendous seafood place, try a steak and go surf and turf for the evening. The steaks are incredible, and the selections are vast. The six-ounce filet is a perfect option to combine with a piece of fish or shellfish. The steak sauces are unbelievable! Since all are made on the premises, they offer unique tastes and are a break away

from most sauces that often taste like burgundy. The selections of these additions are vast and worth the try. The Salmon is served with a unique rub that brings out great flavors. We highly recommend this too. There are also huge, seared scallops, king crab legs and an enormous lobster tail. Fried chicken, Baby back and short ribs round out this menu. But wait there’s even more! There is also a wide selection of burgers, club sandwiches po’ boy sandwiches and some of the best sides you could ever imagine. They include mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, Cole slaw, Brussel sprouts, roasted wild mushrooms, cream corn and the best asparagus you will ever taste. If you cannot find something on this menu, then you might as well stay home! Dessert Our fine server suggested the flourless chocolate cake and key lime pie. The chocolate cake was huge and offered a unique hint of almond. The key lime pie was equally amazing and was served with blue berries and a light cream sauce. They also serve a unique bread pudding with a bacon twist, a crème Brule, house-made ice cream and various after-dinner drinks and dessert wines. Modern Oysterbar Chophouse 10050 N. Arwen Arwen is an adorable 10-month-old longhair Chihuahua mix who is as unique as the character she is named after. This cute pup was brought to the Arizona Humane Society after she was abandoned at a house when her previous family moved and did not take her. An unfortunate and unnecessary action, as AHS has dedicated staff to give resources and tips to pet owners in need of help through its Pet Resource Center. Not much is known about this sweet girl’s past but it is assumed that she did not get a lot of socialization or experience “dog things” like walking on a leash and will need a family that is patient with her and dedicated to giving her the training she needs to help boost her confidence. Additionally, because Arwen loves being around other pups, she may do best in a home with another social dog as that may also help boost her self-esteem and bring out the outgoing side of her! Meet Arwen at AHS’ Campus for Compassion location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix by scheduling a Virtual Adoption by Appointment at azhumane.org/adopt. Her adoption fee is $200 and includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.

Shawn About as handsome and regal as they come, Shawn is a handsome eight-year-old domestic longhair that closely resembles his wild cousins with his gorgeous coat and mane. This sweet kitty was brought to the Arizona Humane Society by a Good Samaritan as a sick stray when he was found underweight and not feeling well. Treated in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, he is now looking for a forever home to treat him like the royalty that he just knows he is. Shawn is a sweet but sometimes shy boy who will need a little patience while getting acclimated to his home. However, once he opens up he is very cuddly and is the first to give big loud purrs, instead of roars, to say hello. He would also love a family that helps him keep his fur as shiny and beautiful as it is now by helping him with some brushing every now and then. Meet Shawn at AHS’ Campus for Compassion location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix by scheduling a Virtual Adoption by Appointment at azhumane.org/adopt. His adoption fee is $50 and includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.

The German Heiress By Anika Scott Few throughout the world realized just how devastated Europe was following World War II. We did not have television yet or the internet to show us glimpses of a war-torn world. However, author Anika Scott easily transforms you almost instantly to a ravaged post-Nazi Germany of 1947. Amongst the ruble and decaying flesh, a wealthy woman searches for answers to missing loved ones who by this time are far away in distant cities across the former Fatherland. While Clara holds very well done but false identity papers that claim she is another woman, the British secret police are hot on her trail. Clara may be in search of loved ones, but she hides a deep and very dark secret under her post-war romances and tall tales. The German Heiress is a fascinating read not only for the plight of its main character Clara, but also for those left in the wake of perhaps the most devastating War of the last century. Throughout the book, there are characters that drop in and out of night clubs, British Army holding facilities and ever abandoned Nazi ammunition bunkers. We won’t spoil any of the twists and turns of this brilliant read, but its highly recommended for anyone who enjoys history.
