LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June By Bill Dougherty

People are talking about the crazy autumn that was the month of October. We introduced 10 new Trendsetters to the world at The Camelback Inn and what a night it was! The Heard Museum celebrated Moondance as a fall favorite for more than two decades. It was smashing. Then there was the 25th anniversary of Compassion with Fashion brought to us by the Arizona Humane Society. Absolutely brilliant too. We rounded out the month by attending the Jason Rose collaboration Tiananmen at the Phoenix Theatre Company. It’s no secret I’m not a musical or theatre fan. However, this play is extraordinary and clearly bound for the lights of Broadway. And we got to see it before the rest of the world. For more reasons than one, we are so lucky to live in Arizona. Last year we lost famed Scottsdale gallery owner Riva Yares. In my opinion, she was one of the greatest influences on art in Arizona. Along with the late Troy Murray and his former wife Marilyn Murry, the three changed the face of Scottsdale and made it a cultural phenomenon and worldwide art center. Recently Ms. Yares’s three grandchildren, great vocal talents in their own right, wrote and sang a beautiful and melodic tune to remember their incredible grandmother. The group, Just Seconds Apart composed of Sela, Ari and

Alex Poulos, has received a great deal of publicity for their offering ‘A Song For You.’ It’s a fitting tribute to one of the greatest ladies who graced our state. Riva Yares one to Bravo! We hope you enjoy the much-promised showcase on Phoenix Heart Ball Honorary Chairs Carolyn and Craig Jackson. While they weren’t able to make the annual Heart Ball shoot in October, we hope this makes up for their absence. They are a dazzling duo and do great and often overlooked things in our community. Enjoy! IN COCKTAIL POLO NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ...

Two women who were quickly jettisoned out of high society reared their ugly heads at a recent charity gala. How could either of you have the nerve to show up. You’re both sociopaths, pathological liars and thieves. Maybe that’s why you were more than happy to have your photos taken together. Beware social community these two blondes are complete frauds. They tried to infiltrate the rarified world of the chosen few and they’ll probably try it again.

2024 Trends & Ideas for Living Room/Great Room By Barbara Kaplan, IFDA, Allied ASID

www.BarbaraKaplan.com

Decorate for The Holidays and Be the First to Have Next Year’s Big Trends!

Being aware of upcoming Trends can be a fun way to instantly update your home’s decor and style. Especially this time of year when these trends will dress up your home for the holidays and then you will be right in style for the new year! Living room and great room trends may be as simple as a new statement piece of furniture, a new grouping of pillows or a new lamp. An easy way to update for the holidays and into the new year. Here are some mindfully chosen dynamics for new palettes, new textures, new ideas for what makes a house a home. Here is inspiration for you to make changes to your décor as you evolve into the holiday season and beyond. Whichever of these trends resonates with you, they all lead to living rooms or great rooms you’ll want to spend time in. 1. WALLPAPERED CEILINGS SPEAK The latest focal point is wallpapered ceilings which are becoming a bold alternative to plain white paint. You can be bold with patterned wallpaper, then weaving in those colors throughout the rest of the room. Alternate patterns and color from the ceiling to connect the ceiling to the room. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns as long as they remain in the same color family. 2. ENTERTAINMENT AS A FOCUS A high bar can be an interesting focal point in living/great room layouts and create a gathering area for conversation and entertainment. You can expand this to be a custom designed bar with a sound system and projector screen. Don’t forget to create a custom designed cover in the style of your room for the TV screen for times you want this room to be for more formal entertainment. 3. ACCENT WITH JEWEL TONES Introduce contemporary jewel tones and set against neutrals, which can add a sense of luxurious drama. People often are afraid of strong color, but done in the right combination, jewel tones and richer colors can still feel elegant and refined. Pick colors you love and make sure that they complement each other. By the way black and white are great additions for adding contrast and heightening the drama. 4. UNSCRUCTERED SEATING When space allows, don’t think traditional layouts, and play with flexible seating arrangements. Modular and multi-directional couches allow you to face in many directions with the new sofa trends. This unique room may need to accommodate a varying number of people, from larger groups to entertain, to smaller,

12

immediate family-only evenings. Multi-oriented furniture allows for a larger room to maintain intimacy for even individuals who are reading or enjoying a fire in the fireplace. The different views in the room can be addressed with a multi-directional sofa. 5. MIRRORS TO FOOL THE EYE Mirrors are back in vogue in new and old ways. Even shining metallic surfaces are applied to furniture, and accessories. It is a great way to update an existing piece of furniture. The most tried-and-true example is a mirrored wall. It can be one piece or be in mirrored squares paneled across a wall. Mirrors are timeless material and in the right setting be luxurious, simple, futuristic, and elegant. They work magic to enlarge any space. Don’t hesitate, because mirrors can be applied anywhere from walls to cabinetry and furniture, you can also incorporate the material as an accent, opting for shiny objects that reflect light and add surprising visual interest. I once mirrored a miniature piano. What a jewel! 6. BIG FURNITURE-SMALL SPACES Even in small spaces you are better off bringing in oversized furniture rather than too small! Small furniture makes small rooms look even smaller! A small sitting room will feel bigger with a large sofa, and then just add a large potted plant. It will fool the eye! It’s all about the drama and making a statement. 7. MARBLE FOR FURNITURE We have enjoyed granite for its durability in kitchens and bathrooms for decades. Now the slightly softer and more porous stone, marble is being introduced as furniture pieces. Marble is still very strong and easy to live with. It comes in many colors and patterns and brings an unconventional charm to any room … especial the living room/great room. The look of a marble piece of furniture is a surprise and so dramatic!

LIFESTYLE EDITOR

Entertaining Beyond Wonderful By Patsy Lowry

“Open yourself to extreme, excessive, extravagant grace.” – Bo Sanchez Just once – entertain over and above any previous dinners that you have ever hosted. Only invite close friends that you truly care about and love. GO FOR IT!!!!! The rewards will be great and your friends will never forget the romantic dinner that you all shared. All you have to do is follow your heart (and a few directions.) For this special, once in a lifetime occasion, remember, more is always more, and never, never enough. Think about what creates your romantic, sumptuous, beautiful and properly set table. Everything that you do must be done with your style (perhaps a little more over the top than you’re accustomed to doing.) Confidence and a sure hand is essential. Pay attention to every detail. Focus on the quality of each item seen, presented and served.

Approach the planning of your romantic dinner with a sense of occasion and joy. Make it look easy, even if itís not. Your party is your own piece of theatre. Set your stage isa new and magical way. Take what youíve learned and have learned from others and make it even more personally your own. Your romantic dinner will be well worth the expense and effort. Share the romance, sense of occasion and love, no matter what happens. Have plenty of wine and champagne on hand.

HELPFUL TIPS 1. Focus on the lighting by using lots of votive candles, romantic music (Barry White, for example), fresh flowers (colorful and lots of them – everywhere.) 2. Pay attention to where your guests will be seated. Create place cards with lots of hearts and romantic sayings. For example, “Love lives.” 3. Your cocktail hour should last no longer than 45 minutes. 4. Do everything that you can ahead of time. Spend every possible romantic moment loving being with your guests. 5. Encourage your guests to wear a ìloveî outfit. Yours should be sensational, sparkling and very romantic. 6. The queen of all wines is champagne. Champagne speaks of romance and celebration. Serve very cold with beautiful champagne flutes. 7. Prepare a welcoming toast by speaking from your heart. Be sure to stand up, look at every guest and then tell them how much you appreciate and love them and why you invited them to this special occasion. Let romance, friendship and love permeate every possible moment. Everyone should leave with a memory of a very special, romantic occasion.

Craig and Carolyn Jackson

With the 2024 Scottsdale Auction around the corner, what are some of the exciting elements of this year’s event that you’re most looking forward to? Every January, the Scottsdale Auction delivers nine days of action-packed excitement, and our 2024 event, January 20-28, will be one of the most extraordinary to date. On Friday, January 19 before the event gets underway, for the first time in our history we’ll be hosting a live “Rock the Block” concert with Grammy Award-winning rock band Foreigner for what could possibly be their final performance together in Arizona. We’ll also feature an incredible array of more than 1,900 auction cars on this year’s docket. Headlining this year’s offerings will be a rare, highly desirable, one-of-one 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari. The hottest ticket in town is Barrett-Jackson’s Opening Night Gala. Can you tell us a little about that? The Opening Night Gala on Sunday, January 21, is a one-of-a-kind affair, celebrating another Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction with live entertainment, gourmet food and signature cocktails. Invitations to this exclusive event are provided to Barrett-Jackson’s registered bidders and consignors. It’s our way of expressing gratitude to our bidders, consignors, VIPs and special guests for their unwavering support, and it’s also a fun, relaxing chance for everyone to catch up with friends, make new ones and dance the night away. What are some of the elevated experience packages BarrettJackson is offering this year? For the most discerning customers, we’re featuring several premier Barrett-Jackson Experiences fueled by our official hospitality partner, On Location. Each package offers an incredible way for guests to enjoy premium hospitality and connect with like-minded enthusiasts like never before. It truly is the best way to take in all the excitement that the Scottsdale Auction encompasses while doing so in a luxurious, elevated way. These three separate packages include Craig Jackson’s Skybox, the Luxury Lounge and the Staging Lanes Experience, and each feature several exclusive hospitality amenities including gourmet food and a private bar. Barrett-Jackson is an incredible automotive celebration, but you don’t have to be a car aficionado to enjoy yourself, correct? Our Scottsdale Auction serves as an excellent event for like-minded

18

enthusiasts across all generations to come together and celebrate this hobby we all love, but it’s not just for bidders, consignors and enthusiasts – it has something for everyone. It’s an incredible social experience for everyone. You can stop in the auction arena to take in its electric atmosphere of competitive bidding, or you can sip champagne and stroll through the tents to see spectacular vehicles on display and shop the marketplace for everything from boats to Birkins and other luxury items. We host over 300,000 people over the nine days, with guests flying in from around the world – it’s truly a place to see and be seen. Can you tell us a little bit about the philanthropic initiatives at Barrett-Jackson? Barrett-Jackson first began as a charity car show in 1967 to benefit Scottsdale’s art center and the community’s library, and that philanthropic vision of our founders – Tom Barrett and Nellie and Russ Jackson – remains a large part of what we do today. To date, we’ve helped raise more than $154 million in funds as well as immeasurable awareness for more than 200 charities across the world. Over the years, we’ve had many incredible charity moments on the auction block, including many with notable celebrities like Nicole Kidman earlier this year, Pitbull in 2022, as well as Steven Tyler, Michael Phelps, Bret Michaels, Sharon Stone, Guy Fieri, Zac Brown Band and the late Muhammad Ali and Siegfried and Roy. We’ll have several incredible charity cars featured at the 2024 Scottsdale Auction this January that will be announced over the next several weeks and we look forward to creating many more memorable charity moments.

MOONDANCE AT THE HEARD MUSEUM 2023

Well, it’s a marvelous night for a Moondance every fall around this time and this year was no exception. Sharron Lewis completed a tremendous task pulling off one of the most elegant and beautiful events of autumn and she looked simply stunning doing it. Everywhere you looked in the stately museum, you saw more turquoise jewelry than on a reservation. Cowboy attire that Gene Autry would have envied was also seen. This mixed with some of the most dedicated philanthropists in the community. The night was a celebration of indigenous art from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

CORTNEY’S PLACE FASHION SHOW The early bird catches the worm and if you happened to be at Nordstrom, Scottsdale a few weeks ago, then you certainly did. We hadn’t been in the Seattle specialty store in quite some time. But what we saw amazed us. First, we were introduced to the savvy store GM Mary Nell Maddox, and she was lovely, welcoming and gracious. Benée Hilton-Spiegle and Diane Lehman and others did a tremendous job making sure we were introduced to everyone there. The early morning breakfast served to benefit Cortney’s Place and the fine things the organization has done and continues to do for our community. The family-founded charity focuses on programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was a beautiful morning filled with great information, stunning fashions, great champagne, food and focus. Breathtaking beauty: Joelle Hadley and those mesmerizing eyes. Well done ladies!

PHOENIX HEART BALL ADDRESSING LUNCHEON 2023 Mountain Shadows proved the perfect and very intimate setting for the Phoenix Heart Ball to host their annual addressing luncheon. Director of Food and Beverage, the dashing Jim Gallen, made sure that the luncheon was absolute perfection. Lisa Portigal and Dee Vecchione chaired the bash, and they did a spectacular job. 2023 Heart Ball Chair Charlene Berge Blum arrived and departed in purple sequins and dazzled. But it was her ever-chic Honorary Chairman Carolyn Jackson

TGEN RUNWAY FOR RESEARCH 2023 Margaret Merritt and Tim Braun

Alarm clocks rang bright and early just as the season crept into fall. Everyone jetted to Neiman Marcus Scottsdale. The cultural epicenter of all things chic and beautiful. Anyway, Vice President and General Manager Tim Braun, a huge philanthropist in his own right, welcomed an overflowing crowd into Scottsdale Fashion Square. Style icon Margaret Merrett did a smashing job with Agency Arizona models that graced the runway. Spotted! Former top model Terri Webb who came out of retirement for the show. She is even more beautiful than when

she departed the catwalk. Chris Beckley lent tunes and sounds as only he can. But wait! It gets even better. Robert’s Catering pummeled everyone with a splendid early morning full breakfast complete with champagne and mimosas before the show got underway. Justine Hurry and Beth McRae chaired the morning. Everything they touched turned to gold! Vicki Vaughn was finally recognized for her non-stop and ultra tremendous efforts for TGen. HUMANE SOCIETY COMPASSION WITH FASHION 2023 Janine Jacobs and Monte

Twenty-five years ago, Betty McRae and her two daughters Beth and Stephanie devised a plan to create a fashion show and small luncheon for around 200 people. Today that luncheon now stands as the most prolific and sold-out luncheon in the Valley. A few weeks ago, more than 1,200 of your closet friends attended the 25th annual Compassion With Fashion luncheon at the Camelback Inn. The resort did a spectacular job. Not a glass of champagne went empty and not a plate forgotten. This jewel in the Marriot collection really has their respective act together. Lauren Smith and Leah Alexander did a masterful job chairing the event from start to

finish. Tish Fry managed to convince everyone to donate in a live auction and a paddle raise. The room went into an absolute frenzy! The amount of money raised was simply stunning. But since its not polite to talk about money, we’ll just say they did a terrific job! Aside from the parking problems associated with an ancillary valet company, the afternoon was a smashing success. How blessed we are to have Page Grier and Dr. Steve Hansen of the Arizona Humane Society. Every day they make an incredible difference in our furry friends lives and those who love them. Bravo! INNER-VIEW: ED WINKLER, ARIZONA CONCOURS

Arizona Concours d’Elegance The sixth edition of the Arizona Concours, and the second year at the lovely Scottsdale locale, the show and competition will focus on some of the world’s most superb examples of the art of coachbuilding and car design, displayed in the luxury atmosphere of a stylish garden party.

n

The Art of Automotive Design n

The next Arizona Concours d’Elegance, a premier automotive event partnered with Scottsdale Arts, is scheduled for January 21, 2024, at the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center. A splendid array of 100 rare and historic automobiles will be displayed with the overarching theme of “The Art of Automotive Design.”

Ed Winkler and Chuck Stanford Jr. are co-chairmen of the Arizona Concours. Here, Winkler responds to a series of frequently asked questions about the event: What is a Concours d’Elegance? Concours d’Elegance is a French term that means a “competition of elegance” and refers to an event where prestigious vehicles are displayed and judged. The term dates to 17th-century France, when aristocrats paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during summer weekends and holidays for public acclaim. The Arizona Concours d’Elegance continues that heritage by displaying and judging prewar, postwar and contemporary collector cars that are exceptional and highly valued. The Arizona Concours, a 501 (c)(3) qualified nonprofit, brings to Scottsdale 50 highly skilled concours judges from across North America who examine about 100 cars in 15 classes, awarding the best in each class, from which will be the car chosen as Best of Show. Who puts on the Concours? The Arizona Concours is produced by a committee comprised of 25 members, all volunteers; there are no paid positions. Additional support is provided by Scottsdale Arts, also a 501 (c)(3) qualified nonprofit. More than 150 volunteers come together on the weekend of the event to provide the necessary manpower for the Concours operation. Why do people dedicate so much time to putting on the event? The car community in the Scottsdale area is one of the strongest in the United States. We have a passion for automobiles and we celebrate the creative engineering and design of premium cars throughout history. The grand vehicles at the Arizona Concours d’Elegance are truly kinetic art, brought together and presented for the public to admire. Why should I attend the Arizona Concours? The Arizona Concours committee selects fine automobiles from private collections and museums across North America. You do

not need to be a car lover to appreciate the artistic assembly of stylistically diverse automobiles displayed on the lawn of the Scottsdale Civic Center.

9/2/23 1:15 PM

Are there any charities involved? After being held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix for four years, the Arizona Concours moved in 2023 to the Scottsdale Civic Center in partnership with Scottsdale Arts, which receives most of the profits to distribute to an extensive array of local art-related charities. The Concours continues in 2024 to be held at the Scottsdale Civic Center with proceeds distributed by Scottsdale Arts. What is the cost to attend the Arizona Concours? The Arizona Concours advanced ticket for 2024 is only $75 if purchased before October 1st. We take pride in being able to produce such a world-class Concours at a reasonable price. Can I become a volunteer? Yes. It takes more than 150 volunteers to support the Arizona Concours. Volunteer by going to ArizonaConcours.org and clicking the “volunteer” tab. We have many categories and time frames for volunteering. All volunteers get free admission to the Concours.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT: JANICE’S WOMEN’S CENTER

Janice’s Women’s Center Golf Tournament Can you share a little about your background and what led you to establish Janice’s Women’s Center, Shante Saulsberry? Certainly. I come from a background of homelessness and abuse, and I have always been passionate about helping others. The idea for Janice’s Women’s Center was sparked by a deeply impactful encounter during the challenging times of the COVID19 pandemic. I met a homeless woman on the streets who was desperately seeking shelter and support. Witnessing her struggle and the lack of effective assistance from existing organizations struck a chord within me. Could you elaborate on the specific experience that inspired you to found your nonprofit organization? Absolutely. The encounter with the homeless woman was a turning point. I remember trying to connect her with local shelters and resources, only to find that many were overwhelmed and unable to provide immediate assistance. This experience exposed a critical vulnerable situation, especially those facing domestic violence. It became clear that a more comprehensive and responsive approach was needed. How did this encounter lead to the creation of Janice’s Women’s Center? The frustration I felt after witnessing the homeless woman’s struggle fueled my determination to make a difference. I realized that relying solely on existing organizations might not be enough to address the complex needs of women and children facing domestic violence and homelessness. This realization, combined with my legal background, led me to found Janice’s Women’s Center with a strong focus on offering comprehensive and tailored support to these vulnerable individuals. What is the main mission of Janice’s Women’s Center, and how does it address the challenges of domestic violence and homelessness? The mission of Janice’s Women’s Center is to provide a holistic haven for women and children who are victims of domestic violence and homelessness. We aim to fill the gaps that I observed during that street encounter. The organization focuses on not just offering shelter, but also on providing specialized support services like legal aid, therapy, and advocacy to name a few. By addressing both the immediate needs and the long-term challenges, we empower these individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and strength. How do you see Janice’s Women’s Center making an impact in the lives of its beneficiaries? Janice’s Women’s Center has the potential to be a transformative force in the lives of those we serve. By offering comprehensive support, we are creating an environment where survivors can heal emotionally, regain their independence, and break free from the cycle of violence. Our goal is to empower them with tools they need to not only escape their current circumstances but also to thrive and contribute positively to society.

38

What are your aspirations for the future of Janice’s Women’s Center? Looking ahead, I envision Janice’s Women’s Center becoming a beacon of hope for those in need. I hope to expand our reach, collaborate with more organizations, the city, corporations, and raise awareness about the importance of combating domestic violence and homelessness. Ultimately, I aim to see a society where no woman or child must endure these hardships alone, and where the support system is strong enough to lift them up and give them a fresh start. How do you ensure that the contributions made by volunteers and donors are utilized effectively? Transparency and accountability are at the core of our operations. We ensure that every contribution, whether financial or in terms of volunteer hours, is used with the utmost care and responsibility. Our organization maintains a clear financial record, and we provide regular updates to donors and volunteers about how their support is making an impact. We believe in involving our supporters in our journey, ensuring that they see firsthand the positive changes their contributions bring to the lives of survivors. What would you say to someone who is considering getting involved but might be unsure about how they can make a meaningful impact? Every effort, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect of change. If you’re considering getting involved, I encourage you to think about your strengths, skills, and passion. Whether you have time to volunteer, expertise to share, or resources to donate, your contribution matters. Reach out to us, and we’ll work together to find the best way for you to make a meaningful impact. Remember, it’s through the collective efforts of individuals like you that we can bring hope, healing, and positive change to the lives of survivors. Join us for our First Annual Golf Tournament, that will be held on Feb. 25, 2024 at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club. Please visit www.janiceswomenscenter.com to get involved or contribute to the efforts of supporting more women and children that suffer from domestic violence and homelessness.

ART AND A GOOD ATTITUDE

The Enduring Allure of Modern and Post-Modern Abstract Art By Palmer Saylor III The Enduring Allure of Modern and PostModern Abstract Art Abstract art has had a profound and lasting impact on the art world, captivating collectors, investors, and the general public alike with vast appeal. It’s so transcendent you can tastefully pair it with any style and movement in any surrounding. Both modern and post-modern abstract art have long held the top positions as the best-selling and most lucrative investments in the art market and at auction. Primarily due to shifting cultural paradigms and the enduring appeal of a movement that revolutionized the art world.

Abstract art emerged from the modern movement in the 20th century, with arguable roots in the late 19th century. It sprung up roughly from the 1920s to the 1960s, as a radical departure from traditional representational art. In abstract art, the absence or “abstraction” of subject matter is central. This is driven by the artist’s conceptual intent to deconstruct or “boil down” all facets and components of art, including subject matter, color and composition, all in an effort to provide viewers with a glimpse into the artistic process as the result. At it’s peak, renowned artists from the New York School, such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning, experimented with techniques and mediums, introducing a new language through landscapes of form, color and composition. Consequently, they engaged audiences with intellectual depth, creativity, and innovation. This shift opened doors for countless artists whose muses and inspirations transcended the boundaries of realism. Interestingly enough, many abstract artists, know very much how to paint traditionally. The ongoing shift in cultural paradigms and artistic expression continues to intrigue collectors and investors, fueling the demand and value of these abstract works. The enduring quality of modern and post-

44

modern abstract art persists as these artworks remain the best-selling and most lucrative investments in the art world. Abstract art from both emerging and famous artists, in modern and post-modern movements, offer a solid choice for designers, collectors and investors who recognize their value as not only important and beautiful paintings, but also a balancing investment in a market they can actually influence.

If 2015 Trendsetter Lee Courtney doesn’t go down in history as one of the world’s greatest event planners, then I don’t know what! Together with Nikki Balich, our board president and 2018 Trendsetter in her own rite, the two simply pulled out all the stops! Mercury was in retrograde, and the moon was in the seventh house the night of the gala. Aside from our Fabulous Phoenicians Amy and Derrick Hall, who were whisked away in the Arizona Diamondbacks playoffs, the evening actually went off without a hitch. The Camelback Inn was superior in every aspect of the word. Boy, can they throw a terrific after party too! It started at the festive cocktail reception outside the majestic property. Guests mixed and mingled begging for the sun to retreat, which it finally did. Agency Arizona models Lauren Mary and Terri Webb adorned in Arizona Diamondback’s jerseys and hats, showcased stunning

jewels from Osborne Jewelers. Everyone swooned! After Dark Valet did an exceptional job assuring that no well high-heeled socialite waited only minutes to park and later retrieve their luxury autos. Dennis Thompson of White House Design Studio bathed the ballroom in red, white, and blue flora! Ten lovely new Trendsetters were presented to our Valley for their outstanding philanthropic service to all of us. They included: Bijen Dyrek, Jean Feuer, Laurie Goldstein, Cindy Good, Suzi Hilton, Joanne Osborne, (whose name we can’t seem to spell correctly,) Nancy Robertson, Darcy Royal, Kristen Shroyer and Amy Walters. DESIGN AND STYLE

Contemporary Art in Traditional Settings:

A Fusion of Styles for Interior Design By Christopher Coffin In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the world of interior design - the integration of contemporary art into traditional settings. This fusion of styles creates a unique and visually stunning space that combines the elegance and charm of traditional design with the bold and innovative nature of contemporary art. Traditionally, art has always played a significant role in interior design. From Renaissance masterpieces to Impressionist landscapes, wall art has been used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space and reflect the owner’s taste and personality. However, as the art world has evolved, so too has the way we incorporate art into our homes.

48

Contemporary art, with its abstract forms, vibrant colors, and unconventional materials, offers a refreshing departure from the more traditional styles. It challenges the viewer’s perception and invites them to think beyond the boundaries of conventional art. By incorporating contemporary art into traditional settings, designers are able to create a sense of contrast and juxtaposition that adds depth and intrigue to a space. One of the key benefits of using contemporary art in traditional settings is the ability to create a focal point. Traditional interiors often have a strong sense of symmetry and balance, with carefully curated

furniture and accessories. By introducing a bold and eye-catching contemporary artwork, the space is instantly transformed, drawing attention and becoming the centerpiece of the room. This fusion of styles creates a dynamic and visually stimulating environment that captivates and engages the viewer. Another advantage of incorporating contemporary art into traditional design is the opportunity to create a dialogue between the old and the new. Traditional settings, with their ornate furniture and classic architectural elements, can sometimes feel stagnant and unexciting. By adding a contemporary artwork, the space is infused with energy and vitality, breathing new life into the room. The juxtaposition of old and

new creates a tension that sparks conversation and encourages viewers to question and explore the relationship between the two styles. In conclusion, the integration of contemporary art into traditional settings offers a fresh and exciting approach to interior design. By combining the elegance and charm of traditional design with the bold and innovative nature of contemporary art, designers are able to create visually stunning spaces that captivate and engage the viewer. Whether it’s through creating a focal point, sparking a dialogue between old and new, or expressing individuality, the fusion of styles adds depth and intrigue to a space, transforming it into a work of art in its own right.

TRENDS IN DINING: THE HOUSE BRASSERIE

Scottsdale’s Hidden Gem in Old Town By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean I have been to many restaurants that have a story. However, today I came across something entirely different. Today I was lucky enough to walk into a story, that became a restaurant, right in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Welcome to The House Brasserie. The house itself was built in 1939 making it one of the oldest standing residences in Old Town Scottsdale. It was built by and occupied until the early 2000’s by Mr. and Mrs. Mowry. Mrs. Mowry was quite famous for her exquisite roses. So famous in fact that another historic building, the Hotel Valley Ho has one of her most beautiful rose bushes on their property that was transferred after her passing and graces their property. While the dining room itself has an elegant yet comfortable ambience, the exterior of the house is the original construction. Outside of the dining room sits a beautiful patio nestled among a grove of immaculately sculpted ficus trees and a stately outdoor fireplace watches over its guests. Owner Joe Ieraci

has done a phenomenal job transforming this restaurant from a small bite venue to a delightful French inspired destination. Exquisite craft cocktails and an extensive wine list await, with almost any bottle available by the glass started our experience. A delightful amuse bouche was delivered to our table, an impossibly airy pastry dough ball with gruyere baked to perfection. Our first appetizer was a decadent hamachi crudo, melt in your mouth buttery softness combined with a textural contrast of wonton strips. The sauce was a mix of sweet and heat combining pickled fresno chilis withsweet pineapple slices in a delicate ponzu sauce. The dish begged to be just gazed upon but the flavors came out on top. There wasn’t a bit left. It was suggested, and we opted for a sublime seared foie gras. Served on a bed of seared brussel sprouts, feta cheese and a delicate toast coated with a umami rich mushroom spread. I had to close my eyes and just let the flavors wash over my palate. Exquisite. Next was a palate cleansing beet and burrata salad. Thoughtfully dressed with crunchy prosciutto. Relaxing and taking in the dimly lit patio, smelling the dishes and listening to the satisfied chatter of other patrons, our main courses soon arrived. Perfectly cooked Chilean Sea Bass nestled atop a puree’ of shaved asparagus with sweet and delicate ribbons of blueberry compote topped with tomiko caviar. The sweet and briny contrast was simply art on a plate. The second dish was a house specialty of petit filet mignon. A smoky combination of sweet crispy elote’ and salty cotija adorned the perfectly cooked filet sitting atop a rich demi-glace. The

50

filet would have converted the most devout vegan to a life of a carnivore. One of the top steaks I have EVER had and I’ve had many. This was not next level it was a penthouse suite. Executive Chef Shauna Barberich is simply masterful. Her attention to detail is unlike anything I have ever experienced. We finished our meal with an elevated take on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Peanut butter semi fredo ice cream coated in a decadent chocolate crunchy shell. The second was a chocolate roulade with salted caramel pretzel toffee with a torched Swiss meringue. Check please nap please. One of things that I always expressed to my children was that there was nothing more expensive than regret. I wholeheartedly regret that it took me this long to experience what I feel is one of top three restaurants in the Phoenix metroplex. The staff, the food, the ambience, the outright attention to every detail should make you run not walk to this “story” that became a restaurant. You’re gonna love the ending. Bon apetit. ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY – PETS OF THE MONTH Sandy Girl

While she may look like she rolled around in a bunch of sand, Sandy Girl definitely has not had a leisurely walk on the beach in her time prior to being rescued. The incredibly lovely five-year-old Pug was saved by an Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ in early October as an injured stray in the streets of Phoenix. Right away, it was clear Sandy was having a problem with her left eye. Transferred to the shelter’s trauma hospital, the short nosed pup received medical treatment for an ear infection, mass removals and an eye enucleation as it was not able to be saved. The adorable girl was also found to have conjunctivitis which means her eye doesn’t produce tears the way it should. Because of this, she may need eye meds for the remainder of her life along with follow-up veterinary care to ensure she is getting the best course of action. While Sandy Girl went to a Foster Hero home to recover from surgeries, she was found to be extremely sweet and calm. Meet Sandy Girl at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $350, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.

Laramie

Voted as the cutest nose in his litter, Laramie poses the important question of, “Aren’t all kitten noses cute?” The answer to which is a resounding “Yes!” While the 14-week-old domestic shorthair may be adorable, his backstory unfortunately is not as lovely. Laramie came in through the Arizona Humane Society’s Field Team as a sick stray along with three siblings. Found with a high temperature, along with eye and nasal discharge it was clear to the Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ on-scene that they were all in great need of medical care. Once he was examined by a veterinarian at AHS, it was discovered that Laramie had a severe upper respiratory infection and conjunctivitis. While undergoing treatment, the loving kitten went to Foster Hero home for recovery and weight gain with his equally adorable siblings. As purry as he looks, Laramie is now ready for the forever home he was always meant to have! Meet Laramie at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. His adoption fee is $150, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.
