Welcome back! From all of us at Trends and the Trends Charitable Fund we hope you and your family had a safe and prosperous holiday season. Two great events showcased the holiday season as they have for more than a half a century. The Board of Visitors Luncheon and Desert Foundation Auxiliary Ball raised a great deal of awareness and much-needed funds. But since it’s absolutely vulgar to talk about money, let’s just say they did well. Both organizations are rich in tradition and both never discuss money. They could certainly teach a few other organizations a few things. You get the picture? People are talking about The SmokeTree Resort. Closed for over a decade, it was once the site of The Other Place restaurant and a smattering of casitas. Enter Bill Doherty (no not me.) Anyway, the Canadian with the sharp mind and an even sharper eye plans to deliver to the residents of Paradise Valley and surrounding areas a whole new take on the once-famous boutique resort. Last winter we hosted a party for the new project and visited the site. A year later things seem to be going in the right direction. Many have tried to revitalize the iconic properties and restaurants in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Phoenix. A small handful have greatly succeeded but most failed and went out of business or are propped up by deep pockets. A few were too clever and lost their verve, others simply should have been demolished. If the SmoketTee is a success, and I think it will be,
the area will finally have its country club back that it lost a decade ago to lofty ideas that fell terribly flat. Stay tuned, there’s always more. Just as we were going to press, we learned of the death of fame architect Charles Schiffner. Together with his wife Adrienne, a 2011 Trendsetter, they did remarkable things for the state and community. Mr. Schiffner was responsible for many noted architectural projects, but also decades of philanthropy. He will be missed. IN COCKTAIL POLO NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ...
A certain steely blue-eyed blonde has managed to remain on several very prestigious committees and charity ball rosters. She smiles when she sees you and always goes overboard with kindness. But do not turn your back or you’re likely to get stabbed. WHITE CHRISTMAS A brilliant afternoon! On a crisp winter’s evening, the Arizona Biltmore played host to Ryan House and their annual White Christmas gala. Famed composer Irving Berlin penned the song back in 1942, while vacationing at the sun-drenched resort dreaming of a colder holiday. This year co-chairs Cassie Littell and Megan Peacock did a smashing job, leaving nothing left to the imagination. Beautiful holiday decor graced the stately property. Guests arrived decked to the halls

in Christmas finery. Dinner and dancing were festive as always and a chocolate bar served as a brilliant dessert offering, for those who stayed late. Cyndy Marsh and her husband Tom took home top honors are the best dressed couple of the night! ENT Research at Barrow Neurological Institute Under Construction For nearly 60 years, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation has raised funds for Barrow Neurological Institute’s far-reaching medical research and innovative treatments for patients. It all started with the first Barrow Grand Ball on New Year’s Eve 1965 at Paradise Valley’s former Casa Blanca Inn. Last year, under the leadership of Chairman Diane Might and Ball Co-Chairs Amy Cohn and Erin Gogolak, the Women’s Board reached a lifetime milestone of $100 million raised to support Barrow. The Women’s Board and its loyal supporters are dedicated to the continued funding of important research impacting so many in the local community and beyond. “The Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation has helped advance life-saving research and treatment at Barrow Neurological Institute through its generous philanthropy. The support of this group and its generous donors not only reflects their strong belief in our mission, but also their understanding that the work we do here benefits patients worldwide,” said Michael T. WOMEN’S BOARD PROJECTS In 2006, Women’s Board Chairman Vicki Budinger and Ball Co-Chairs Nancy Hanley Eriksson and Bonnie Martin initiated the new fundraising concept of selecting a specific Barrow research department and designating it as its annual special project. Raising additional funds for Barrow was key to this initiative, but more importantly, it aimed to raise awareness for a specific research project that members could both relate to and enthusiastically support. Over the years, Women’s Board Projects have designated funding to areas such as the Petznick Stroke Center, diabetes research, aneurysm and AVM research, Alzheimer’s disease research, spine research, innovation education, and more. To date, an amazing $7.2 million has been raised to support the yearly Women’s Board Projects. “As longtime champions of Barrow, the Women’s Board raises record-breaking funds to support our physicians and scientists as they conduct research to find new treatments and cures for the most devastating neurological diseases. The introduction of the Women’s Board Project, and the incredible support it generates year after year, further signifies their commitment to supporting groundbreaking research that aims to transform patient care and save lives,” said Katie Cobb, Barrow Neurological Foundation President.
This year, Barrow Grand Ball Co-Chairs Carrie Hulburd and Kathy Munson have selected the Barrow Department of ENT (ear, nose, and throat) and Skull Base Surgery as the Women’s Board Project. Barrow’s world-class Hearing Health Science Program, led by Shawn Stevens, MD, FACS, is the top hearing implant program in Arizona and among the top five programs in the Western United States. In the U.S. and in Arizona, the figures for those suffering from hearing loss are staggering. And hearing loss, at any age, can have devasting effects on a person’s quality of life, including their ability to work and engage with those closest to them. Over the past two years, the Hearing Health Science Program has served 14,000 patients, performed more than 1,000 surgical procedures, and evaluated more than 600 patients for hearing implants. Currently, Dr. Stevens is overseeing the construction of a stateof-the-art anechoic research chamber dedicated to advancing the neuroscience of hearing. The chamber will lead to promising research outcomes and learnings, as well as serve as a magnet for new neuroscience research talent. Dr. Stevens and his team work closely with researchers and clinicians throughout Barrow as a larger assembly on hearing health, brain function, and device development that will help us better understand the link between hearing loss and dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other cognitive disorders. The addition of the anechoic research chamber will open the doors to even more groundbreaking investigations, positioning Barrow to lead the field of hearing health care well into the future. “We are proud to support the Barrow ENT Department and the innovative work of Dr. Stevens as this year’s Women’s Board Project. His inspiring vision and dedication pushing boundaries to advance hearing implant technology through research and clinical trials exemplifies Barrow’s storied tradition of innovation and collaboration,” said Jan Lewis, 2023-24 Women’s Board Chairman.

Adding Beauty to Someone’s Life How did you get into the fashion industry? Working in retail gave me my first gaze into what clothes can do. It allowed me a chance to style and create an aesthetic that worked for all body types, ages, genders, and ethnicities, and as a young queer kid, I needed that creative outlet. Who inspired your craft? My mother, Orna, did. Seeing the way clothes empowered her, the way they changed her spirit, made her smile and made her glow always stuck with me. Watching her as a child and the way she would move through our community or an event or just in the kitchen of our house wearing something that she felt special in; she created such a radiance, and that’s the reason I design. An attempt to add not only beauty, but a feeling, to someone’s life is always my intention. Do you have a favorite designer or designers? Joseph Altuzarra What do you think of synthetic fabrics? We do our best not to use synthetic fabrics because of their impact on the planet. They are unable to break down and will never absorb back into the Earth so I actually wish our industry didn’t depend on them so much. We do our utmost to make sure that if we do have to use them that we are using them to accommodate an existing order, knowing that they will not end up in a landfill and that they will be in someone’s closet for a long time. Describe your latest collection? For my Spring 2024 collection I played around with the optical properties of water and the surreal world of illusions that are created. I have been experimenting with the concept of reflections and working on ways to make their images more elaborate. I like the idea that the surface of any form of water hides and separates a world while also binding the physical and the spiritual together.

ARIZONA COSTUME INSTITUTE HOLIDAY LUNCHEON 2023 A sold-out afternoon at the Phoenix Art Museum proved the perfect setting for its annual ACI Holiday luncheon. This year, the famed upscale boutique Wunderkind and its owner Philip Manghisi, secured designer Jonothan Simkhai. The handsome Mr. Simkhai addressed a crowd of beautifully dressed ladies and gentlemen and wowed the audience with spectacular fashions for his new collection. INNERVIEW: CITY OF HOPE PHOENIX CANCER CENTER AND TGEN
Improving the Lives of Cancer Patients in Arizona On February 2, 2022, City of Hope, a world-renowned, National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, completed the acquisition of the cancer system, Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). This acquisition now expands national access for patients to world-class research and cancer care with locations across the country, providing patients with timely access to exceptional care, clinical trials, and leading-edge innovation. Locally, the acquisition forges stronger ties with the Valley’s Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), which became part of City of Hope in 2016. Is there a City of Hope cancer hospital in Arizona? Yes, the main cancer hospital is called City of Hope Phoenix Cancer Center, located at the former Cancer Treatment Centers of America location in Goodyear. City of Hope also has three cancer clinics around the Valley with locations in North Phoenix, Tatum Ridge, and Gilbert. What is City of Hope known for? City of Hope has a century-plus history of leading-edge, compassionate care and scientific and medical breakthroughs, including the development of the first synthetic human insulin, human growth hormone and the technology behind several cancerfighting drugs that impact more than 100 million people worldwide. The collaboration between City of Hope Phoenix and TGen will accelerate the translation of TGen’s scientific discoveries into the hospital and clinics, improving the lives of patients – here in Arizona. This collaboration is under the umbrella of City of Hope Arizona.

A key focus of City of Hope Arizona centers on recruitment of outstanding physicians and scientists with a desire to develop new

What are the benefits of dual appointments between City of Hope Phoenix and TGen? Dual appointments more deeply align the researchers and physicians. Understanding the challenges from both perspectives, guides the research toward clinically relevant solutions, informs the design, the implementation of clinical trials, decisions about treatment selection, and the development of more effective and less toxic therapies. For example, Dr. Bryce’s clinical focus is prostate cancer, and his research focuses primarily on clinical trials, genomics and early therapeutics. How will philanthropy play a role in the breakthroughs of tomorrow? Philanthropy is now incorporated into both TGen and City of Hope Phoenix. The impact of donating to both entities will provide the organizations with funding for advancing lifesaving research, enhancing treatment options, transforming cancer care in diverse communities, and expanding patient-centric facilities on the hospital campus to increase capacity to serve more patients. TGen’s VP of Philanthropy, Erin Massey, will oversee the philanthropic efforts for both TGen and City of Hope Phoenix Cancer Center.

TRENDS IN DINING: ARBOLEDA SCOTTSDALE
Escape to the Mediterranean By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean
To say that the Phoenix metroplex was blessed with a cornucopia of amazing restaurants would be a vast understatement. From decades-old establishments to Mom and Pop start ups that boast everything from local delicacies to the finest seafood and steaks, troves of ethnic cafes and restaurants that cater to locals and expats craving their own countries’ cuisines are but a Google search away. Want a delicious steak? There’s ten good restaurants and three that will change your life. Great seafood? There’s another ten great restaurants and three that you celebrate a special occasion at. The difference happens when one of them stands out as a unique experience. In the groves of restaurants that call Phoenix home, there is one that I was lucky enough to discover. This is the “Grove”, Arboleda. Nestled in the tony Scottsdale Quarter in a building that formerly housed Kona Grill, Arboleda has reinvented not only the building itself but a unique cuisine that celebrates its Mediterranean influences and a not so subtle homage to Spain and Portugal. Subtle yet bold colors

effortlessly mix amongst the casual decor bringing the outside in and the inside out. Open areas that can accommodate large groups are intertwined with intimate tables for two. The open kitchen is under the careful watch of decorated cow skulls and an exquisite wood ceiling surrounded by smooth stucco walls. Multi courses and an extensive wine list accompanied by a plethora of house craft cocktails await you upon entering Arboleda. We began with a small bite, a house-made savory cone filled with rich and silky foie gras with ribbons of membrillo puree’ and toasted walnuts. An exquisite hamachi crudo was next, nestled atop a sweet carrot puree, chili garlic crunch, black garlic vinegar and crispy brussel sprouts. As any restaurant in Spain or Portugal would offer, a beautiful selection of cured meats was our next adventure. It was suggested and we accepted the Cinco Jotas 100% Iberico acorn-fed ham. Delicate and savory served alongside sourdough tomato toast. Delicious with every tasty morsel. My kryptonite, charred octopus was next. Sweet decadent Portuguese octopus with pickled persian cucumbers and salsa macha was the perfect bite. We had already been transported back to the beaches of Portugal.
In keeping with the Spanish theme our first entree was the Iberico pork “pluma” a jaw dropping shoulder cut that is found in only two places in Arizona, Arboleda being, lucky you, one of them. Served medium rare this will make you rethink everything that you have ever thought about pork. Sweet and savory, its richness lends itself to a duck a l’orange with its orange confit and crispy thyme crust. Literally one of the most delicious and unique entrees I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. Coupled with perfectly bitter chickorie greens and puffed grains gave it the textural element that a dish this rich needs. The second entree was an impossibly crispy snapper. Perfectly salted and the most tender flesh beneath the to die for crispy skin. The fish was served atop an incredibly crisp yet soft potato cake, pureed cauliflower with champagne creme and topped with briny decadent caviar. We seriously debated whether to have dessert as I was nurturing the perfect last bite. However upon gazing upon the dessert list I was intrigued by the Baked Arizona. An homage to the baked Alaska, but on the lighter side with an angel food base, prickly pear sorbet, lemon sherbet and a bruleed meringue top, encircled by a chile prickly pear sauce. I did find out that licking the plate was bad etiquette but I digress. I had to remind myself that I was “at work” and with that said I also was reminded of how lucky I was not only to have the opportunity to sample such delectable food but also to appreciate the incredible cuisine that Phoenix has to offer. Every single bite made sense and every bite paired perfectly with the next. I spoke earlier about how there were ten of this and three of that but Arboleda was truly an experience that I had nothing to compare it to. I guess I’ll have to try it again to make sure it was everything that I thought it was. Maybe tomorrow. And maybe the day after as well.
