Lyrics by

In a twist of fate the bright-eyed and youthful Swallow discovers a mysterious man hiding in her family’s barn. When she asks for his identity the first words he utters are ‘Jesus Christ’, and it’s as though her prayers have been answered. While the rest of the townspeople are searching for a fugitive escaped from jail, Swallow gathers the town’s children who make a pact to protect their new-found saviour from the cruelties of the outside world. Whistle Down the Wind shows how powerful love can be when the innocence of childhood collides with the cynicism of the adult world. In a combination of award-winning songs, including Boyzone’s International hit No Matter What, powerful staging and storytelling, this show is a record-breaking theatrical sensation that is both mesmerizing and moving.

NEW PRODUCTION Set in 1950s Paris, this production of Puccini’s masterpiece of young love and heartbreak is as fluid and detailed as a film. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, famed for her stage production and film of the musical Mamma Mia! And, for Opera North, the multi-award winning Peter Grimes. With its vivid portrayal of the verve of Parisian life, the excitement of falling in love and the desolation of loss, this is a Bohème high on emotion. Get the tissues ready – you’ll need them. Conductor: Richard Farnes (Tue) Geoffrey Paterson (Fri) Original Director: Phyllida Lloyd Revival Director: Peter Relton Sung in Italian with English titles Lasts approximately 2 hours 15 minutes

A reluctant villain, a modest maiden, amiable ghosts and scary professional bridesmaids, Gilbert and Sullivan make merry in this witty burlesque melodrama. When shy Robin Oakapple is exposed as rightful inheritor of a witch’s curse, he must commit a crime a day or die in agony. His romance looks doomed but the trouble really starts when his feeble crimes drag his ancestors back from the dead.

Is there an opera that contains more music of sheer beauty than Così fan tutte? This period production starts with a casual bet that the fiancées of two young men won’t stay faithful if put to the test. Putting naïve notions of romantic love under the microscope, this is the perfect operatic comedy.

This new production will have a distinctively Opera North freshness of approach, whilst fully embracing the spirit of G&S’s topsy-turvy invention.

Conductor: Justin Doyle Director: Tim Albery Sung in English Lasts approximately 3 hours

WEST END HIT including the ORIGINAL cast Enjoy is set in Leeds where an ageing couple are living in the city’s last back-to-back. With the demolition of the area in progress, Wilf and Connie are soon to be re-housed in a brand new maisonette with a waste disposal unit and non-slip vinyl flooring. When a sociologist comes to observe them in their daily life, normality takes a decidedly atypical turn… A dream cast includes Alison Steadman (Abigail’s Party, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice - for which she won an Olivier Award), and David Troughton, a veteran of many landmark RSC and National Theatre productions, and currently starring alongside Kevin Spacey in the Old Vic’s production of Inherit the Wind.

‘Ibsen’s magnificent play …grips like a thriller’ Daily Telegraph

Thrilling , enigmatic, destructive, Hedda Gabler is one of theatre’s most irresistible heroines. Returning from her honeymoon and already bored with her marriage, Hedda finds herself caught between the brilliant but dissolute Eilert Loevborg and the clutches of the predatory Judge Brack. As a shocking path of destruction unfolds, there can be only one outcome… International star of stage and screen Rosamund Pike is perhaps best known for her film portrayals of Bond villainess Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, and Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. Rosamund is joined on stage by Tim McInnerny (Blackadder, Rogue Trader) as Judge Brack.
