Journey’s End Directed by David Grindley

Set in St Quentin in 1917, eighteen-year-old 2nd Lieutenant Raleigh is the new arrival in the company commanded by his former schoolboy friend, Captain Stanhope. There’s only three years between them, but a lifetime of experience separates the pair as Raleigh discovers that the man in army greens is much changed from the boy he left behind in cricketing whites.

Directed by Tony and Olivier Award winning Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray), Legally Blonde The Musical is the funniest and most fabulous musical around. The best show in town, case closed.

Based on the author’s own experience in the trenches, this gripping tale about ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances celebrates humour and courage, and is a compelling insight into how in the face of adversity the human spirit will always triumph.   ‘Searing

The King’s Speech

By David Seidler Starring Charles Edwards as George VI

‘What’s the one essential thing a King must do? He must BELIEVE he is King’ When King Edward VIII abdicates for the love of Wallis Simpson, his terrified brother Bertie is thrust into the spotlight and crowned King George VI of England. In a time of national crisis a debilitating speech impediment leaves Bertie incapable of speaking for his country on the brink of World War II. In a room at 146 Harley Street his wife Elizabeth, (the future Queen Mother), has arranged for him to meet the maverick Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. Breaking all royal protocol the King and his oddball therapist embark together on an unconventional journey to correct the King’s stammer and help him deliver the radio-address that will inspire his country in battle. Madama Butterfly

Norma

Giulio Cesare

One of the world’s best loved operas, Madama Butterfly is the deeply touching story of a young woman whose innocent love is rewarded only with betrayal. Puccini’s masterpiece contains universally popular music, including the ‘Humming Chorus’ and Butterfly’s aria ‘One Fine Day’. This exquisite production sets one of opera’s most heartbreaking love stories in the context of the culture clash between East and West, and combines beauty with unflinching emotional truthfulness.

Puccini

Handel

New production

Love burns fiercer than fire.

Love triumphant.

One of the greatest of Italian operas, Norma marks the climax of the bel canto repertoire, and in ‘Casta diva’, contains one of the most prized of all soprano arias which made legends of both Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Bellini’s long, sumptuous melodies, lush orchestration and Norma’s story of fierce passion, battle and sacrifice will move you to tears. Conductor: Oliver Von Dohnányi Director: Christopher Alden

Experience an opera with all the colour, drama, passion and epic sweep of a Hollywood blockbuster in this story of Cleopatra’s seduction of Julius Caesar. Murder, battles, plots and counter-plots ensue before Caesar and Cleopatra emerge finally triumphant in both love and war. Handel lavished some of his most exciting and seductive music on a score in which every number seems jewel-like in its perfection.

‘... dazzlingly fresh and overwhelmingly powerful…’ Daily Telegraph

A co-production with Theater Chemnitz. In memory of Gertrude Pfaffinger and in homage to the great Maria Callas.

Long Day’s Journey into Night

The Taming of the Shrew William Shakespeare

Starring David Suchet

‘A woman moved is like a fountain troubled’

Following his critically acclaimed performance in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons at the Apollo Theatre in 2010, David Suchet returns in Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer prize-winning masterpiece Long Day’s Journey into Night, one of the greatest American plays written in the 20th century. Set in 1912, the story is a compelling family drama between James Tyrone (David Suchet), Mary Tyrone (Laurie Metcalf) and their sons, Jamie and Edmund, during one fateful summer’s day.

Charismatic and brash Petruchio of Verona is seeking his fortune through his abilities to gain the hand in marriage of a rich woman, and he’ll do anything. Katharina and Bianca’s father, longing for his daughters to be married, is offering a generous dowry for his daughters’ hands, but not until Katharina is tamed and her wild and unruly ways put to bed. Will the flamboyant Petruchio succeed in taming Katharina to a submissive life of domesticity? Following the huge success of the 2009 visit of The Tempest, the Royal Shakespeare Company returns to Nottingham with Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, directed by Lucy Bailey.

Hailed by The Observer as ‘the undisputed king of dance theatre’, Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures has produced some of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades including Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and last year’s sell-out hit, Cinderella.
