Basket Case

Starring Nigel Havers Directed by Robin Lefevre

Dependable Miranda and her ex-husband, the charming and wholly unreliable Guy, are thrown together in distressing circumstances when their faithful old family pet takes a turn for the worse. Reunited over the dog basket, Guy and Miranda find they haven’t ‘moved on’ quite as they had imagined. When they are joined by family friend James, who rarely sees a stick without getting the wrong end of it, and Martin, the vet and long time admirer of Miranda, the scene is set for some startling hometruths as this rapid-fire foursome mines laughter and touching observations in equal measure. Basket Case is a perfectly crafted, quick-witted and contemporary comedy starring Nigel Havers, with Christine Kavanagh as Miranda, David Cardy as James, and Graham Seed as Martin, making his first stage appearance since his untimely death as Nigel Pargetter in The Archers.

Ruddigore

Madama Butterfly

The Queen of Spades

When mild mannered Robin Oakapple is revealed as the villainous Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, inheritor of the curse of Ruddigore (he must commit a crime a day), his chances with the prim Rose Maybud look doomed. This marvellously entertaining take on Gilbert & Sullivan’s topsy-turvy burlesque of Victorian melodrama was a smash-hit in 2010 and is now back due to popular demand.

One of the world’s best loved operas, Madama Butterfly is the deeply touching story of a young woman whose innocent love is rewarded only with betrayal. Puccini’s masterpiece contains universally popular music, including the ‘Humming Chorus’ and Butterfly’s aria ‘One Fine Day’. This exquisite production sets one of opera’s most heartbreaking love stories in the context of the culture clash between East and West, and combines beauty with unflinching emotional truthfulness.

Prokofiev’s ballet music to Romeo and Juliet begins this passionate all-Russian affair. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto was written amidst the wreckage of his marriage but the composer found inspiration in adversity and the result was a triumph, shamelessly virtuosic yet fresh and lyrical. Rachmaninov’s First Symphony almost sank without trace after a disastrous première but it’s now praised as his most dramatic symphony, mixing smouldering energy, taut rhythms and the composer’s gift for great tunes.

City of Birmingham Jools Holland Symphony Orchestra The undisputed King of boogie-

Andris Nelsons’ performances of Shostakovich with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra have been nothing short of sensational, and this concert, featuring the composer’s Leningrad Symphony, threatens to bring the walls down. Written in the dark days of 1941, it’s a gripping portrait of the city under siege, beginning with a hair-raising music invasion, and ending in defiant, uplifting music that makes thrilling use of a massive orchestra. The calm before the storm is provided by Latvian virtuoso Baiba Skride who performs Mozart’s elegant Violin Concerto No.4.
