To Kill A Mockingbird

‘ The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience’ Atticus Finch This most widely read Pulitzer Prize winner – now in its 50th year of publication – tells the unforgettable story of life in the American Deep South as seen through the inquiring eyes of a child. Brother and sister Jem and Scout Finch are growing up during the 1930s depression, but their idyllic childhood innocence is shattered with the realisation that bigotry and prejudice rule in their small town of Maycomb, Alabama. When their father Atticus defends a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, the whole family become the target of gossip and abuse. ‘Duncan Preston is outstanding as Atticus’ The Guardian **** (on the 2007 production) Suitable for ages 11+

Starring Richard McCabe (Wallander, Spooks) as Jim Hacker, and Simon Williams (Upstairs, Downstairs, Holby City) as Sir Humphrey Appleby. The original writers of the BBC series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this 30th anniversary production. Following a sell-out season at the Chichester Festival Theatre and a successful run in the West End, Prime Minister Jim Hacker, his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley are all back in a brand new play. Heading the coalition government, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown and there is just one grain of hope in a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. But great institutions have a way of riding punches and bouncing back unscathed – will it prove so for Jim Hacker and his team of close advisors? ‘ Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey are back! Avenue Q

After nearly five years of mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness, London’s funniest show by far is hitting the road. The Tony Award-winning Avenue Q is the irresistibly charming musical about the lovably hopeless characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships and, above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English? Hilarious and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, Avenue Q is a musical like no other.

Carmen

Fidelio

Bizet’s fiery and passionate opera – a heady mix of sex and jealousy – outraged its first night audience in Paris, back in 1875. Carmen, the ultimate femme fatale, arouses burning desire and a lust for revenge as she toys with emotions. Every tune is a hit, and Carmen remains one of the world’s most popular operas.

Would you risk your life for the one you love? Leonore, the heroine of Beethoven’s only opera does just that, bravely disguising herself as a prison guard to rescue Florestan, her wrongly imprisoned husband.

Access Information

Access Performances

Physical Access Wheelchair spaces are located in the Stalls of both the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall. If it is desired, or necessary, patrons may advise us of type of impairment and the size of the wheelchair (if applicable). Scooters and larger size wheelchairs may require an allocation of two ‘standard’ size wheelchair spaces. Please discuss your requirements when booking. As part of the ongoing refurbishment works, two additional wheelchair spaces and a disabled toilet have been created on Tier 1 of the Royal Concert Hall. There is a lift in the Royal Concert Hall that services all levels. Currently we have no lift facility in the Theatre Royal. However, in 2010 we are focusing our attentions on the Theatre Royal and investigating the possibility of a lift.

We are proud to be a part of Scene and Sound. Please visit the website for more information www.sceneandsound.co.uk
