LUNCH FOR LIFE 2008 Welcome to this special edition of Totally in celebration of improved and early detection of an all too common silent killer, breast cancer. Along with Miss Sunita Shrotria, who is head of the breast unit, our aim is to provide the local population and those patients referred for expert treatment from around the country, to receive, at the Ashford and St Peters Breast Unit, high quality gold standard treatment. We feel state of the-art-equipment should be available to allow the unit to deliver the treatment we all wish for in breast care.

This whole event is driven by the experience of two members of the committee, Lorna Ponti and Jacci Cleghorn who, with the help of supportive and generous friends, are actively campaigning for the improved services of breast awareness. As we all know, breast cancer kills more women under 50 than any other disease. These women are mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters who have a lot of life to live and the target is to lengthen the life of every special woman you know. Both Lorna and Jacci are lucky that their cancer was discovered and treated; a hard journey, but worthwhile. However, there are all too many who discover their cancer too late because they are too frightened to go and get tested. These are the people we want to reach with the aid of the new equipment. The machines we are raising money to purchase for the unit will firstly identify any problem much earlier than currently possible and also have the added benefit of less pain throughout the testing process. Anyone who has gone through the mammogram experience will remember that it is none too comfortable and this fact alone puts off more young women going to have the investigations carried out. We want everyone to feel welcome and eager to be sure they are free from any trace of the disease, which means reducing the pain of the procedure. An important element of the diagnosis is nuclear medicine, which is a little known speciality in which a wide range of clinical conditions are investigated using tiny amounts of radioactive tracers administered to the patient. Nuclear medicine is a completely different imaging process to X-rays, CT or MRI scanning, as it looks at how the body functions rather than its structure and is a very sensitive technique. Alongside the fund raising of the unit, we welcome the unquestionable role that Macmillan Cancer Support provides to every sufferer and their families. Macmillan are a source of support, helping with all the things people affected by cancer want and need, and are a force for change – pushing for better cancer care both locally and nationally. Thank you each and everyone who has attended our event or given support through donations, advertising in this publication, and raffle prizes. It goes without saying that without you we would not be able to achieve our goal of a better awareness and treatment of this awful disease.

Top: The Lunch For Life committee, Christina, Mary, Ann, Jacci, Lorna, Zara, Kam and Elizabeth.

The clue really is in the title here. Lunch for Life, founded by Lorna Ponti following her triumph over breast cancer, holds an annual lunch date to raise money for charity. The major beneficiaries are, not surprisingly, cancer related charities. Lorna is aided by a committee that is every bit as committed to getting every ounce of joy from life as Lorna herself. This could by why the Lunch for Life is so well attended, and such good fun!

This year’s event at Wentworth Golf Club started with a Champagne reception and ended with a gracious and most generous tally of donations from the attendees totaling in excess of £45,000. In between there was a suitably fine meal, entertainment from jazz singer Elle Parker and by the Incognitos, the Eton College close harmony group, speeches by surgeon, Sunita Shrotria, and Mrs Sue Tiplady, representing Macmillan Cancer Support, and a live auction and raffle.
