Personal Development

10

TONALi TOUR offers opportunities for personal development, by sharing a project connecting musicians, student managers, schools, organisers and TONALi

The unique characteristics of TONALi TOUR underline the fundamental approach for steering the project

performing

Success is defined by attitude towards success. The project consciously widens its scope for individual contributions to its configuration and development. Musicians, student managers, teachers and organisers realise the TONALi TOUR in playful determination, creativity, commitment and courage, to provide a meaningful innovation to serve society. Every single TONALi TOUR project is evaluated and every insight leads to a systematic development of the

initiative, thus no project is the same as the other.

Phase I Preparation TONALi and a well-known organiser of a festival or concert hall agree to work together. The organiser finds three local schools wishing to participate actively in the project. The organiser’s project manager informs the teachers about the TONALi TOUR and communicates the know-how and know-why to realise the project. The teachers use their practice-orientated classes to select the student managers and get them involved in the realisation of the planned project.

realisation Phase II Workshop I This workshop takes place six weeks before the school concert. The accompanying teachers, student managers and involved schools participate in the workshop. The workshop is carried out by TONALi and the organiser. If necessary, TONALi trains the project manager beforehand, so that this workshop can be realised independently. The workshop introduces the allocated soloists and their outstanding qualities, conveys the basics of culture management, develops mutual aspects of marketing and describes the challenge of sparking enthusiasm for classical music in a young audience. The workshop aims at creating maximum motivation among the student managers for the project (school concerts and final concert). P r o j e c t : Workshop I T i m e n e e d e d : about 2.5 months before the final concert P e o p l e n e e d e d : TONALi TOUR team, teachers, student managers and organisers

Phase II.1 Coaching the Musicians The TONALi Trio, consisting of three young and highly talented TONALi musicians (a cellist, violinist and pianist) is prepared by TONALi to deal with the specifics of the project. It is their task to create enthusiasm for classical music in the school concerts, to communicate music authentically and to work along with the student managers to develop the process of concert composing“.

25

P r o j e c t : Coaching the Musicians

Phase II.2 School Concerts The designated TONALi musician is invited by the student managers to give a concert in the school. The musician is invited by a host family to stay with them. He or she arrives a day before the concert to get acquainted with all the people involved. The entire organisation of the event, including artist care, marketing, moderation and general realisation of the project, is autonomously carried out by the student managers. The entire school community and the organiser’s project leader attend the actual concert. The aim of the school concert is to introduce the designated musician to the school community, to allow the other students to experience highest artistic quality in classical music and to awaken interest in the concert organised by their fellow students. P r o j e c t : School Concerts T i m e n e e d e d : about 1 month before the final concert P e o p l e n e e d e d : TONALi musicians, student managers, teachers, the school community, organisers

Phase III Workshop II Directly following the school concert, the selected student managers from each school actively start to make preparations for the final concert. The student managers meet with the organiser, who offers insights into professional concert activities, assigns tasks and sees to controlling. The student managers are responsible for the following activities: moderating the concerts, technical support, marketing, press, public relations, and artist and audience support.

Phase III.1 Ticket Distribution Competition All the participating schools partake in the ticket distribution competition. The student managers who mobilise the largest number of listeners for the final concert, win a culture prize. The organiser awards the prize, which was displayed during the first workshop.

Phase III.2 Final Concert The aim of the final concert is to bring together a heterogeneous audience (students, core audience) and to

26

inspire them with a creative programme, created by the three TONALi musicians in a unique stage performance. The organiser makes sure the concert gets a good advance placement on the event calendar, that the general public is well informed and ensures that an adequate documentation is made available.

involvement Role The TONALiSTS belong to the best of up-and-coming young musicians in Germany, having qualified in the TONALi stage academy and participated in the renowned TONALi Music Competition. They not only contribute high musical-artistic standards to the project, but also pedagogical ability and practical knowledge of concert communication. Using this expertise, they are able to develop a conceptual idea for both the school and the final concert. Along with the student managers and organisers, they develop and carry out the realisation of these ideas.

Student Managers

Role The TONALi TOUR project takes place in school as well as in public cultural life. It transfers responsibility to youngsters irrespective of their age, origin and educational level and allows them to transgress school boundaries to cooperate in activities that enhance cultural events in their region. The students gain basic knowledge in culture management and organising, with professional guidance from TONALi and the organiser. They realise a school concert and a final concert on their own accord, thus becoming student managers. They work together closely with the soloist and the organiser.

50

TONALi and the involved teachers assume the role of assistants. The responsibility for organising lies in the hands of the students. They look after the artist, see to the moderation, organise advertising and the ticket distribution.

Social Media Moderation

The person responsible for communicating with the artist and fulfilling his wishes acts as a gobetween to make sure the musician and the team are in accordance. Agreement between the stage manager, the project manager and the musician is of great importance.

Marketing The marketing manager ensures the marketing of your project. His aim is to present the organiser,

Teamwork Set a date for a jour fixe, i.e. a date when the team members meet regularly to discuss whatever is necessary (such as every Tuesday after the main break) Develop a common vision, such as: ”We want to show how cool classical music can be.“ or: ”We definitely want to win the ticket distribution competition.“ Share tasks and make it clear who is responsible for what Feel jointly responsible for your team. Such excuses as ”that wasn’t me, I am not responsible for this” do not help the team Treat one another respectfully, thus creating a pleasant working atmosphere Always be willing to help and support your fellow team members with constructive feedback and helpful tips Be honest with each other and have the courage to express yourself courteously, even though you may be in complete disagreement (a tip: use the sandwich method: compliment – constructive criticism – compliment) Exchange views, especially when conflicts arise. Talk constructively about the problem as soon as it comes

78

up, before it grows and becomes a real issue And last but not least: celebrate your successes together!

You are in need of a good idea? You’ll find a way. Your goal is to develop as many ideas as possible

considering

Brainstorming

It is not important at first that the ideas are especially witty Let your fantasy run free – maybe the ideas are best that one first thought were the most flipped out All participants are on an equal footing, nobody will be criticised or laughed at for what he or she says Every idea is equally valuable Don’t feel offended if someone else in the group steals your idea and further develops it The best would be for you to become ”idea thieves” as this is what is behind every form of brainstorming The rest is quite simple. Get together with your student manager team: take a big poster and write in the middle of it the theme for which you are looking for a solution. All that the others have to do is to express and develop their spontaneous suggestions. Write everything down. Make sure that each participant
