Shine your Irish stepping shoes, find a four-leaf clover, and fire up the corned beef and cabbage. Polk County has more ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (and other springtime activities) than gold pieces in a Leprechaun’s pot-o-gold at the end of the rainbow. Here are just a few:

St. Patrick’s Day Street Party

Sat. Mar. 16 - Sun. Mar. 17

Molly McHugh’s Irish Pub 111 S. Kentucky Ave., Lakeland, FL (863) 686-6231 | mchughspubs.com

Nearly 40 years ago, a young wet-behind-the-ears immigrant from a small Irish farming village ventured to Boston in search of the American Dream. His search led him to Lakeland, where, after having worked multiple jobs, he and his wife started their own business—Molly

“Now at that time opening a business in downtown Lakeland was thought of as career suicide but Gerry saw the potential this town had,” its website states. “With that and against everyone’s advice Gerry and Molly cashed in their life savings and opened a pub that Gerry lovingly named after his wife. The couple opened the pub on March 15th, 1996, ten years to the day after Gerry moved to America.”

Even after Gerry passed away, his family continues his legacy through his pub. Also, in honor of his Irish heritage, the pub hosts its annual St. Patrick’s Day Street Party.

Now entering its 28th year, the street party encompasses two days of great food, green beer, live music, and, of course, tons of dancing in the street. Best of all, the event is family-friendly and open for all ages until 9 pm, when the adults have all the fun.

Biggest Baddest Block Party

Sat. Mar. 16 - Sun. Mar. 17

The Brass Tap

1515 Town Center Dr G-102, Lakeland, FL 33803 (863) 680-9994 | brasstapbeerbar.com/Lakeland

What’s better than enjoying one of the largest St. Paddy’s Day street parties in Lakeland? How about enjoying one of the largest street parties with no cover?

That’s right! You can enjoy the luck of the Irish for two-straight days of drinks specials (including green beer!), live music, and other fun and games, from giant yard pong and cornhole tournaments to basketball tosses and giant Jenga. And don’t forget hot music played by musicians like Eric Troop, Greg Redding, and Dan Laovie.

With more than 70 taps and 100 bottles, The Brass Tap has remained Lakeland’s go-to pub for great beer. So, what better place to grab a pint of green beer on St. Paddy’s Day than there?

“When you say ‘St. Patrick’s, you instantly think ‘beer’,” explained Bharat Chhabria. “As Lakeland’s premier craft beer destination, it is no surprise that we remain the celebration of choice for guests looking for a quality event with quality beer & libations. Our St. Patrick’s Day celebration has been growing every year and accordingly, we expect another fun and record-breaking event this year.”

Shamrocks & Shenanigans

Sun. Mar. 17 @ 3 PM - 10 PM

Balmoral Bar and Grill

124 Kenny Blvd, Haines City, FL 33844 (863) 225-2660 | balmoralbarandgrill.com

Craic, ceol, and rince. Those are the Irish words for “fun”, “music”, and “dancing.” They’re also the three things anyone can expect at the 4th Annual Shamrocks & Shenanigans at Balmoral Bar and Grill in Haines City. The spirit of Ireland comes alive with a full day of authentic Irish music, traditional dancing, and delectable Irish cuisine.

From traditional Irish step dancing performed by local dance troupes led by an Irish dance instructor to traditional Irish music performed by genuine Irish artists like Brendan Doherty and the Back Porch Band, this annual St. Patrick’s Day event always manages to offer a wee bit o’ fun and a lil luck of the Irish.

As someone from Ireland himself, Garrett Kenny, the CEO of Feltrim Group, which owns and operates Balmoral Resort, wanted to bring a little bit of his Irish heritage with the annual celebration. Now in its fourth year, Shamrocks and Shenanigans expect to live up to its namesake with overall good weather and company.

“For the Irish lads and lasses, it’ll be just like back home, and true to Irish hospitality, for our honorary Irish friends, it’ll be like you’re one of the family”, it’s website states.

EVENT SCHEDULE: The Irish Dancers from 3-5 pm, Brandon O’Connor - Singer songwriter from Waterford Ireland from 5-7 pm, The Back Porch Band from 7-10 pm. www.BalmoralBarAndGrill.com

Putt Putt Pub Crawl

Sat. Mar. 16 @ 10 AM - 9 PM

Apple Lounge & Grill

2803 Recker Hwy, Winter Haven, FL 33880 863-528-1317 | leopardlegacy.com

What drink goes better with golf than beer? So, wouldn’t it be cool to have a free drink for every hole of golf played? Well, you can do just that at the 3rd Annual Leopard Legacy Putt Pub Crawl in Winter Haven.

This annual fundraiser, for 21 and up, combines both a miniature golf tournament with a beer pub crawl. Attendees tee off at holes located in various bars across Winter Haven and Auburndale.

The event registration starts 10 am at Apple Lounge and the Putt Pub Crawl begins at noon and continues throughout the day at local pubs and eateries including Apple Lounge & Grill, Old Man Franks, Tanners Lakeside, Blackburns, Brack Shack, Brew Hounds Sports Lounge, LA’s Midway, Winter Haven Moose, Somewhere Sports Bar, Skinfinity Tattoo, Dukes Brewhouse, Barrel 239, Slate 8 Billards, Hotshots Downtown, Twisted Prop. This year there are 16 locations, so the day is separated into 2 routes; 8 stops on each. Best of all, each hole offers one free drink or shot.

Part of the fun is each team dressing up in theme and voting for the “best hole”. Dressing up is suggested. Awards and after party begins 5 pm at Tanners Lakeside with live music, lots of raffles, 50/50 drawing, lotto hat and live auction items. Full event details: https://www. facebook.com/leopardlegacy

The fundraiser was started in loving memory of Tim Leopard, a late local business owner who was dedicated to giving back to his community. So, it only felt appropriate that a fundraiser was started in his honor to allow others to continue his legacy of giving: Leopard Legacy whose mission is to provide food, basic needs, and monetary donations to families, children and Veterans in the greater Winter Haven area. Central Park Winter Haven (863) 295-9422 | mainstreetwh.com

Spring is a great time to spend with friends, wheth er they have two feet or four. You and your favorite four-footed friends are sure to enjoy great springtime fun with the upcoming Bark in the Park in Winter Haven.

Take your favorite furbaby on a leash and stroll through Central Park in Winter Haven to enjoy food trucks, vendors, live music, and plenty of fun games and activities including a live K9 demonstration from the Winter Haven Police Department.

And don’t miss the annual Wiener Dog Race for a chance for your hot dog to cross the finish as the winner—or rather, wiener!—and claim the title of “fastest wiener in town.”

Normally hosted in May, this year’s event was moved up to March to take advantage of the cooler spring weather and escape the otherwise sweltering summer temperatures that leave dogs hot and panting, explained Meghan Mackie, Membership & Marketing Director for Main Street Winter Haven.

“This dog-centric event promises a tail-wagging good time for dogs and their human companions,” she said. “We also hope to foster a sense of community among dog owners, providing opportunities for socializing, networking, and perhaps even educational sessions on responsible pet ownership...Whether you’re a dog owner or not it’s always fun to walk around and admire all the pups and wonderful vendors!”

I Know Nothing Part Deux

“I am wiser than this man, for neither of us appears to know anything great and good; but he fancies he knows something, although he knows nothing; whereas I, as I do not know anything, do not fancy I do. In this trifling particular, then, I appear to be wiser than he, because I do not fancy I know what I do not know.” - Socrates, from Plato’s Apology.

This year I turned 37. That’s three years away from 40. Usually, when somebody reaches such a milestone, they look back at their life and tell others what they learned during that time.

If there’s one thing I know, with the top of the hill quickly approaching before I inevitably go over it, it’s this: I know nothing.

Yes, I know most adults are supposed to divulge “age-old wisdom” once they become of old age, but in my defense, I’m not that old—though I certainly feel that way! Heck, even when I do become old enough to call myself old (give it another 20 years or so), I don’t think I can be bold enough to claim I know it all.

five years ago. Though my life, I have learned my mistakes, even if I ended up learning the hard way. And, boy, do I wish I knew how to travel back in time so I could correct them.

Even then, even with my school diplomas, even with my life lessons learned, even with everything else I have learned up until now, even then, I still don’t know if I know much of anything. Even if I am smarter, I certainly don’t feel smarter—or wiser!

And that’s the problem. I’m an adult. Or at least I have been ever since I turned 18. Adults are supposed to know everything. At least that’s what children think. When you’re a kid, you believe adults know everything. Thinking back, now that I’m an adult, perhaps my judgement as a kid wasn’t that great. Perhaps we adults don’t know everything. I know now my parents certainly didn’t.

1. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Which large U.S. city is nicknamed Rip City?

2. MOVIES: Which movie features the quote, “She doesn’t even go here!”

3. GEOGRAPHY: Which national capital city is the northernmost in the world?

4. TELEVISION: Which long-running sitcom features a dad named Phil Dunphy?

5. GAMES: In chess, how many knights does each player have at the beginning?

6. GEOLOGY: What natural phenomenon is associated with igneous rock?

7. LANGUAGE: How many official languages are in the United

Nations?

8. MUSIC: David Grohl was a drummer in which band before he became the frontman for the Foo Fighters?

9. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a group of alligators called?

10. FOOD & DRINK: What kind of meat is used in Hasenpfeffer, a traditional German stew?

Because even though I am feeling older, I’m not feeling any wiser. In fact, if I’m being honest, I feel the exact opposite. I feel dumber. You want to know how dumb I feel? I just realized I already wrote a column on this exact same subject and with the exact same title! That’s how dumb I feel.

Oh, sure! Technically, I know something. I have the high school and college diploma to prove it. I know my basic reading, writing, and arithmetic—actually, scratch that last part! I was never good at math. So, at the very least, I know enough to have qualified for two fancy, expensive pieces of paper.

And also, to be fair, I know more now than I did 30 years ago, or 20 years ago, or ten or even

Perhaps it’s best if I feel inadequate in my own intelligence. After all, there are plenty of people who know nothing, but because they speak loud enough, people think they’re smart. (How else did our last president get into office?) As Bertrand Russell once said: “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.” (Again, that explains our last president!)

So, perhaps its best that I know that I know nothing. Does everyone really need to know everything? We consider, “I don’t know” to be an embarrassing answer. But, if anything, it should be liberating. I don’t have all the answers. No one does. That much I know.

There are plenty of fan-favorite attractions returning along with several new experiences that will debut at this year’s Expo, April 9-14, 2024. Sun N Fun Aerospace Expo Celebrates 50 years

Children will enjoy a newly established Aviation Playground that promises to inspire.

Throughout the six-day event, daily airshows include spectacular military demonstrations by the USAF Thunderbirds, the US Navy F-18 Super Hornet Demo Team, Tora Tora Tora WWII history demonstration, commemorative Air Force Warbirds, and the precision Ghost Squadron jet team. The Wednesday and Saturday night airshows will be just as riveting, featuring aerobatics by world-class airshow performers, pyrotechnics, and dazzling firework displays. A special appearance will be made by the four-engine, tri-tailed Lockheed VC-121A Constellation, nicknamed “The Connie,” a meticulously restored 1948 transport that once served the military, Presidents, and NASA. The Commemorative Air Force will offer rides on several legendary warbirds like the B-29 Super Fortress, B-24 Liberator, P-51 Mustang, and RC45J Expeditor.

Over 500 exhibitors will present an

expansive lineup of aviation-related products and services. Pilots and maintainers will benefit from hands-on workshops focused on maintenance skills, aircraft building, and dozens of topical forums for the aviation enthusiast. Youth will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM activities including flight simulation, robotics, drones, and wing building. There is truly something for everybody at the 50th Anniversary SUN n FUN Aerospace Expo!

Weekly or single day tickets to the 2024 SUN n FUN Aerospace Expo along with prepaid parking can be purchased online. Tickets can also be purchased in person upon arrival. Children 10 and under are admitted free. 1. Which group released “I Like It”?

2. Who first released “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”?

3. The Royal Teens were best known for which song?

4. Name all the brothers in the Jackson 5.

5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Ol’ Smokey’s got them ears on, He’s hot on your trail, And he ain’t gonna rest ‘til you’re in jail.”

ANSWERS

1. Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1964. It was the group’s second hit after “How Do You Do It.”

2. Gladys Knight & the Pips, in 1967. It was the Marvin Gaye cover, however, that was first

• Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little, but once it settles, they make very nice bowls. I do this with pizza dough as well. Prebake for a few minutes to form the bowl, then fill with ingredients and complete baking.

• If you can put a tension rod in the cabinet under your sink, you can use it to hang spray bottles for extra storage. It’s amazing how much space clears up, and it’s easy to find the bottle you need.

• Got popcorn? For a healthier (and much less expensive) version, go oldschool: Put popping corn kernels in a regular brown paper bag, seal the bag, then microwave.

inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. The Pips’ version was inducted in 2018.

3. “Short Shorts,” released in 1958. The song was penned by Bob Gaudio, writer of several of the songs released by the Four Seasons, such as “Sherry.” The song was used several times in episodes of “The Simpsons.”

4. Michael, Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito.

5. “East Bound and Down,” by Jerry Reed in 1977. The song was the soundtrack for the “Smokey and the Bandit” film. In the film, a couple of good old boys are making a fast multi-state run to bring back 400 cases of beer, one step ahead of the sheriff.

PRUE

Prue is a tan and white female American Bulldog mix. She is approximately 6 months old. Prue gets along well with adults and children, but can be a little shy at first. She has had positive experiences with dogs, chickens, and even horses. Prue loves to play with any and all kinds of toys! She absolutely loves to run and play with her sisters.

TWI-LA

Twi-la is a black female Domestic Medium Hair mix. She is approximately 2 years old and has been spayed. Twi-la is a very sweet girl and loves to meet new people. Twi-la can still be very playful and enjoys toys of all kinds. She is fully litter box trained with no issues.

MAY

• “Bread tags (the little plastic clips that hold bread bags closed) make great cord organizers when you are using a multiple outlet power strip. Write the kind of device (e.g. TV, Xbox, cable box) on the tag, then clip it to the plug end of the cord. When you need to unplug, it’ll be easy to see which is which.” -- C.C. in Ohio

• Travel a lot? Make use of those shower caps by pairing up shoes and using the shower cap to hold them together while simultaneously protecting your clothes from the shoe bottoms. Smart!

* “I make plenty of cupcakes for my children’s various events, but I kept having unreturned cupcake carriers. Those things are expensive! I make my own now, using a box lid. The lids for paper cartons work really well. Cut a cross into the lid top with a razor or carpet knife, and press down. Make it the size of a cupcake. Insert cupcakes and go.” -- A.R. in Georgia

May is a pastel calico female Domestic Shorthair mix. She is almost 4 years old come March 11. May is a very sweet girl who loves to lay around the house and be around her people. She has only been around adults so we aren't sure how she will be around kids. May isn't a fan of being held but still loves to sleep next to you in the bed or lay on your lap when you are sitting down.

JOE

Joe is a silver male Maltese mix. He is approximately 2 years, 1 month old. Joe is a very sweet but shy boy. He is going to take sometime to warm up but once he does, he gets along with people of all ages. Joe has been around other dogs in the home but not outside so we aren't sure how he does with them. He has lots of energy and loves to run around and play with toys.
