Comedian Jo Koy Returns to the Stage Comedian Jo Koy will return to the stage with his Jo Koy - World Tour at the RP Funding Center on January 19, 2024. As one of today’s premiere stand-up comedians, Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing in a Las Vegas coffee house. Jo’s uniquely relatable comedy pulls inspiration from his colorful family that has reached all kinds of people and has translated into sold-out arenas around the world. Koy started 2022 with a bang, selling-out the Climate Pledge Arena (over 14,000 tickets) in his hometown of Seattle. Today, he continues breaking sales records at some of the most prestigious venues around the world including Mall of Asia Arena (Manila, PH), The Forum (Los Angeles), Coca-Cola Arena (Dubai), ICC Theatre (Sydney, AU), and Madison Square Garden (New York City) to name a few. In 2017, Koy broke a record for the most tickets sold by a single artist at 23,000 tickets and 11 sold-out shows at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu. In response, the mayor’s office in Honolulu proclaimed November 24th as “Jo Koy Day.” The Jo Koy World Tour will feature ALL NEW material. His highly anticipated 4th Netflix stand-up special, Live From The Los Angeles Forum premiered globally on September 13th. The special is a follow up to his 2019 Netflix special, Comin’ In Hot. Koy has already had four highly rated and successful stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. In June 2020, the comedian released his first variety special, Jo Koy: In His Elements on Netflix in which Koy brings the laughs and beats to Manila, spotlighting local culture in a one-of-a-kind show featuring Filipino-American comedians, DJs

RODIN BRONZES RETURN TO THE POLK MUSEUM OF ART

In the lead up to its major expansion opening in Fall 2024, the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College is excited to announce a multi-year partnership with the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation to display a suite of 14 bronzes by French master sculptor Auguste Rodin. The Museum first brought Rodin’s work to Central Florida in late 2022 with “Rodin: Contemplation and Dreams/Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections.” The exhibition was one of the Museum’s most popular and highest attended to date. “It’s like we are welcoming an old friend — and his sculptures — back to the Museum, but this time we and our visitors will get to enjoy Rodin’s company for years,” said Dr. H. Alexander Rich, executive director and chief curator. “We are honored to partner with the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, especially in this time of exponential growth for the Museum, both with regard to our physical size and our ambitions to continue to present incredible, world-class art experiences for all our audiences from near and far.” This long-term installation of the bronzes, entitled “Rodin at the Polk: Selections from the Cantor Collections,” begins this week and will roll out in phases over the next year, with the intention of leading visitors through the Museum’s Hollis and Perkins Galleries and in select

spaces in the new expanded building. The works on display showcase Rodin’s astonishing craftsmanship and his affinity for capturing the beauty and drama of human movement in a manner true to life. A trio of visitor favorites — and some of Rodin’s most immediately recognizable works — including his “Three Shades” are on view now. “I am thrilled that our community has an opportunity to experience these world-acclaimed works of legendary artist Auguste Rodin,” said Dr. Anne B. Kerr, president of Florida Southern College and member of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. “The longer-term residency of these works is a major benefit to our community and is a testament to the quality of leadership of the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College and the combination of serving as both a community and academic art museum of the highest caliber.” Once fully installed, the complete set of 14 bronzes will remain on view at the Polk Museum of Art through mid-January 2026. “Rodin at the Polk: Selections from the Cantor Collections” has been organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation and is sponsored by Florida Southern College. For more information, visit PolkMuseumofArt. org/RodinAtThePolk.

About the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College is a not-for-profit academic and community museum that seeks to enhance lives through inspirational and engaging art experiences for all. It is the largest and only nationally accredited visual arts organization in Polk County and the only Smithsonian Affiliate art museum in Central Florida. In Summer 2023, the Museum began construction on its $8 million expansion and renovation project, an initiative that will add more than 14,000 sq. ft. of education and exhibition space to the current Museum building. The addition will include six new galleries and multi-functional classroom and event spaces, with anticipated completion in Fall 2024. The Museum is open Tuesdays–Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm and on Sundays 1 pm to 5 pm. The Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. The facility is handicap accessible, and special needs assistance is available. Admission to the Museum is always free, thanks to our Strategic Partners, the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation and CORE Wealth Advisors.

No More Ramen For Me Originally, this column was going to be different. I wanted to write about the uselessness of New Years resolutions and how no one should bother making them. After all, how many people truly manage to keep their resolutions? And how many more people end up breaking them within the first month, if not the first week, of the new year? However, something that happened to me around New Years made this column take a much different direction. If anything, I think I might very well make and keep a New Years resolution: no more ramen for this year. I love ramen. I don’t simply mean the store-bought kind that’s the staple of every struggling college student’s diet. I mean authentic ramen as prepared with tonkotsu pork, uzumaki fish cakes, bean sprouts, and sliced ginger. The type of ramen that is served at eateries like Sabu Ramen at The Joinery in Lakeland. Boy, do I love Sabu Ramen. Every time I visited Lakeland, I would make it a priority to have a meal at The Joinery, specifically a bowl of ramen from Sabu Ramen. My favorite must be the Spicy Miso and the Pork Tonkotsu. The former is sweet and spicy, and the latter is salty and savory. In fact, I love ramen so much that my nephew bought me an “I Love Ramen” shirt as a Christmas present. I even decided to proudly wear this shirt during an outing a few days later to a local ramen place. And that’s when the trouble began. The day before New Year’s Eve, while staying in Virginia for the holidays, I traveled to Chesterfield, VA with my nephew and his fiancée where we ate at a ramen place called Domoishi. My nephew and I had ramen while his fiancée had a

poke bowl. My meal was tonkotsu pork with a savory, spicy broth base with edamame, corn, bean sprouts, and, of course, tonkotsu pork. It was delicious, but not as delicious as the ramen at The Joinery. At least that was my initial reaction. Only an hour later did my stomach start doing somersaults. Turns out I loved the ramen, but the ramen did not love me back. When we got back home, I decided to get into my pajamas and go straight to bed for a short nap. I hoped sleeping it off would do the trick. Sadly, it did not. What I hoped was only an upset stomach soon evolved into massive nausea with a painful stomachache, queasiness, and the urge to vomit. I hoped that going to bed early that evening would solve all my woes. Sadly, they did not. I ended up spending the entire day of New Years Eve in bed. I was supposed to attend a small party with my relatives that evening. Instead, I spent it moaning and groaning with bad stomachache all day and night. Antacid did nothing. Ginger ale did nothing. Not even a strong medication used for cancer patients with gastoroenteris did nothing. The good news is that the next day I felt slightly better, not better enough to eat a full meal, but not as bad as the bad bowl of ramen passed out of my system. Let’s just say that the experience has me swearing off ramen for the rest of the year. So, yeah, that’s a long way of explaining why I’m writing this column. This is why I’m writing this column.

• If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, you can bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. • If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bath mat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support and your hands will not slide. • Sunburn happens in the winter too, especially on the slopes. Use a cotton ball soaked in cold tea to ease tight dry skin. Be sure you apply sunscreen to your face and wear eye protection when going out to play in the snow. • For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water.

• For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in the oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! -- J.L. in Florida • Remove musty smell from stored clothes by adding either vinegar or ammonia to the wash water. Be sure to check for smell removal BEFORE drying, as the dryer can bake the smell into clothes, making it more difficult to remove.
