Mission and Ministry: Jesus is Calling

In This Issue:

When a pager goes off in our department, it normally means that there is a crisis somewhere and a chaplain is being called to jump into the middle of it and provide ministry. Situations are often filled with anxiety and fear or grief and anger. When I first started working as a chaplain, the buzzing of the pager would startle me and immediately trigger an increase in my heart beat and (to be honest) a desire to be anywhere else. Those feelings were tempered over time as I strengthened my skills as a pastoral caregiver and became more confident in my role.

South Tyler Opens...................................3

And yet, I have been challenged by the simple but profound response of Sr. Irene. The first words out of her mouth when the pager rings are, “Jesus is calling.” At first, the words seemed charming. This was not what I normally imagined Jesus to sound like. As Sr. Irene’s words began to sink in, I found them deeply challenging. They called me to look beyond my skills and role and beyond what I wanted for myself. Her words invited me to see the pager ring as an invitation for me to join with Jesus in extending his healing ministry and to celebrate the goodness of a God who has given me the privilege of making a difference in the life of an individual, a family and this health system.

Upcoming Events..................................11

While most of those who work in this health system won’t ever have to respond to a pager, everyone has opportunities to respond to Jesus’s invitation. The reality is that the behavioral standards reflected in iCARE. can leave a lasting impression of our care and personal concern for patients, visitors, co-workers and staff. They make a difference in any organization that implements them, because they represent good customer service. The behavioral standards become transformational when they are rooted in ears that are always listening for opportunities to extend Jesus’ healing ministry. After all, “Jesus is calling.”

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler Opens

As South Tyler rapidly expands, so too will CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System alongside it with the opening of its brand new, state-of-the-art facility: CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler. The city has seen no shortage of freestanding emergency room facilities opening their doors lately, it should be noted that this is more than a mere emergency room facility, although a fully-equipped ER open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week is part of the package. The 41,200-square-foot facility is a fully licensed, acute care hospital. It contains eight in-patient beds and features a comprehensive, full-service lab and pharmacy capabilities; an imaging center featuring a state-ofthe-art MRI, 64-slice CT, Ultrasound and X-Ray; a third-floor surgery center with five world-class suites featuring the only Stryker® Studio 3 technology in Tyler (a data storage and search system for crucial medical files and images); and will offer the following specialties, in-house: Ear/ Nose/Throat, Orthopedic Surgery, Podiatry, Plastic Surgery and Urology. There is also space allotted for expansion based on community and service needs. “CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler currently handles more emergency room visits than any local provider, with almost 75,000 per year, and is committed to outreach not only with facilities, but through services with Champion EMS and Flight For Life,” said Chris Glenney, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “Being able to access quality health care, especially emergency care and specialty care, is hugely important to 3 TRINITYTALK tribune SPRING 2017

patients. With the new facility, we will be able to alleviate much of the pressure put on the current Emergency Care Center at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler.” The project was originally announced to the public in May 2015. It subsequently broke ground December that same year and is now open and fully operational as of Feb. 13, 2017. The location was strategically chosen as optimal placement in order to more robustly serve the population of South Tyler and surrounding areas. “The people of Tyler, Whitehouse, Bullard and this whole region need access to a true Emergency Department in this area. CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler will provide care for emergent medical needs, admit patients for routine hospital care or stabilize and transfer patients needing complex care to our main facility,” said Jason Proctor, Chief Operating Officer, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospitals - Tyler and South Tyler, and the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler. The facility is staffed 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week with boardcertified emergency medicine physicians, experienced nurses and clinical staff who can deliver emergency care at a higher level than what is offered in other similar urgent care centers. CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler provides sophisticated, yet affordable, emergency care as compared to other free-standing ERs in the area as it is equipped to either admit those requiring standard hospital care or stabilize and transfer those with more complex needs to Tyler’s main hospital facility.

South Tyler Opens, continued “As part of this established integrated health care system, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler employs the ConnectCARE electronic health record, which allows providers to seamlessly access patients’ records, test results and medical history across all hospital and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic locations,” said Mark Anderson, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System has also worked to ensure care at the new facility is as affordable as it is accessible. CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - South Tyler accepts Medicare and is in-network with most managed care providers, as well as for patients who signed up for the CHRISTUS Health Plan on the Online Health Exchange. “It has been a longstanding desire of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System to move toward high-growth areas of our community,

and the Cumberland area surrounding this new facility is an economic force that is providing huge growth for the city and surrounding region,” said Lindsey Bradley, FACHE, Senior Vice President – Group Operations for CHRISTUS Health and Chief Executive Officer of CHRISTUS Northeast Texas. “The rapid population growth and corresponding need for medical care and access have guided us to meet the needs for this growing community with this facility. This growth, rooted in quality, is part and parcel of our longstanding commitment to this region, and of our dedication to continue an award-winning legacy of service and compassion in Northeast Texas begun by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston so many decades ago.”

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler ranked among Top 100 Hospitals For Neurosurgery and Spine Care Few hospital systems can claim to be at the forefront of neurology treatment and care, but that’s precisely where CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler finds itself when it comes to neurosurgery and spinal care. Becker’s Hospital Review published its 2016 edition of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs,” naming CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler among the ranks. “We are incredibly pleased to be included in this prestigious list of hospitals who are distinguished nationally for their quality of care, service and skill,” said Chris Glenney, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “This recognition is a strong example of the tireless effort and energy given by each member of the CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler and Neuroscience Institute teams to ensure that our patients receive the highest quality health care available.” The selection process for such a list is detailed and in-depth. To compile the rankings, Becker’s Hospital Review meticulously studies national rankings and awards garnered for superior outcomes in neurosurgery, neurological care and spinal surgery. Sources include U.S. News & World Report for rankings on neurology and neurosurgery; CareChex national and regional rankings for neurological care, neurosurgery and spine surgery; Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery designation; Healthgrades awards for spine surgery, neurosurgery, cranial neurosurgery and stroke care; and Magnet designation for nursing excellence. christustmf.org 4

Top 100 Hospitals (Neurosurgery and Spine Care), continued “Without the continual effort and achievements of the medical staff, physicians and all our Associates, this honor would not be possible,” said Glenney. “The remarkable dedication and quality shown by these teams has resulted in numerous awards and distinctions over the last weeks, months and years, and this recognition is a wonderful summation of the varied and distinct honors they’ve achieved. We are proud to be named among these hospitals and health system – not only because it means that we are working in the right directions to constantly improve, but because it means that we are able to offer the very best care to our patients.” CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler is one of only four hospitals in Texas to attain a ranking on Becker’s Hopsital Review’s 100 Best

Community Hospitals. This latest ranking is yet further proof of the high quality care CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System strives to provide throughout its network. “The Becker’s recognition is based on a number of individually researched and standardized awards,” said Shawn Dunn, MD, Medical Director of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Neuroscience Institute. “The methodologies for presenting each of these awards are different and offer a unique perspective on what makes a program excellent in a particular way. However, the Becker’s recognition is a sort of compilation of all of these different facets of neurosurgery and spine programs – and in order to earn this recognition a health care system has to offer a truly complete and excellent continuum of care for its patients.”

CMN Honors Flight For Life ‘Miracle Workers’ Miracles are not always the result of divine intervention, sometimes they are thanks to the hard work of men and women just doing their job. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals recognizes this, and for five years running have celebrated the work that goes into making these miracles happen with the annual Miracles Begin With You! event. The most recent celebration on January 26, recognized the work and efforts of Flight For Life, the air ambulance service joint venture between CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. Flight For Life originated in 1985 and its formation realized the first air ambulance service to the Northeast Texas region. The service’s care extends across 100,000 square miles of the region, which will only be extended with the recent addition of a fixed-wing aircraft to the fleet. Flight For Life has thus far transported more than 200 children annually, and now thanks to the success of the Miracles Begin With You! campaign and community support for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the service has now been outfitted with state-of-the-art pediatric support equipment and corresponding training to help ensure the highest quality care for the most fragile children. Miracles Begin With You! was founded in 2012 by Julie and Tom Brown, alongside Katie and Reagan Butts as an opportunity to recognized the exceptional work of local pediatric caregivers while simultaneously raising funds to support their efforts via Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Over the past five years, this event has raised more than a quarter million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and their mission to serve the sick and injured children of Northeast Texas by providing lifesaving equipment, programs and services. It is through the gracious generosity of partners, including Michelle and Bruce Brookshire, Katie and Reagan Butts, Dr. and Mrs. Steven P. Keuer, 5 TRINITYTALK tribune SPRING 2017

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Z. Ornelas, The Saleh Family Foundation and the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Volunteers, that this wonderful event is in its fifth year. Past recipients include Dr. Brenda Morris, Bonnie Tincher, Dr. Patrick R. Thomas, Robin Rowan, Dr. Rick Rogers, Shirley Gordon, Terry Giles, John Gaston and Lindsey Bradley. The Miracles Begin With You! committee and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are honored to recognize these highly skilled caregivers. New Mobile Mammography Unit Unveiled

Thousands of women across Northeast Texas will now have expanded, more convenient access to a mammography thanks to a new set of wheels. The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center unveiled its new, state-of-the-art Mobile Mammography Unit during the fundraising kickoff event for A Toast to East Texas recently. “The new mammography coach is truly exceptional and will offer leading edge care to the women of northeast Texas who need it most,” said Bobby McMillian, Administrative Director of System Imaging for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “It is a beautiful and comfortable space, filled with state-of-the-art equipment that will help us improve access to care for thousands of women across the region and it will help us save lives.” The new vehicle is custom-built and contains a range of incredible equipment and features designed to make accessing needed care even easier for patients. The exterior is equipped with a large awning to provide a patient education area for health fairs and a cover in case of rain. The new stair and entry design is designed with slip-resistant flooring to provide stability as the patient enters the coach and lessens the potential for falls. The interior is designed with the patient experience in mind, from employing a relaxing color scheme to integrating smooth, calming textures. The registration area is larger and more comfortable, due to the addition of plush seating tucked in a slide-out, which allows for more room between the patient registration and waiting areas. This area includes a large TV for education and entertainment while patients await their exam. It is also specifically designed for a digital environment, with an enhanced network and Wi-Fi system for transmitting data. In addition to the improving the patient’s experience, the new vehicle boasts industry-leading medical technology.

“The coach is equipped with a new Hologic Genesis Full Field Digital Mammography unit,” said Natalie Hanson, RT (R) (M), Mammography Compliance Coordinator at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center. “This unit provides a lower dose to the patient, and it processes images at a faster speed, allowing for shorter exam times. It is equipped with high-resolution monitors that provide exceptionally fine detail for reviewing patient images as they are acquired, thereby reducing the chance for recall due to motion or technical repeats.” The coach also uses SMART Flexing Paddles: two paddles designed for comfort and enhanced tissue grip, as well as the FAST Paddle system, which conforms to natural contours of the breast, providing greater comfort to the patient and more even compression across the entire breast. “Each detail of this vehicle is engineered to improve the mammography experience for our patients and for our medical staff,” said Hanson. “From the HEPA-filtered air-conditioning and heating system, to the anti-microbial seat coverings, to the recessed lighting with dimmers – we wanted to provide our patients with a best-in-class experience to match the nationally-recognized health care the Ross Breast Center has been providing to the women of Northeast Texas for years.” “Thanks to the generosity and drive of the Women’s Board, we are able to make a direct impact on the lives of thousands of women in this region,” said McMillian. A Toast to East Texas is a series of 10-12 parties that will take place over a period of one month, mid-April to mid-May benefiting the projects of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation Women’s Board. Generous patrons from the community will hold private parties in their home or at a location of their own choosing at no cost to the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. The Foundation Women’s Board will solicit sponsors and sell tickets to the events. christustmf.org 6

New Mobile Mammography, continued “Beginning in 2016 and spanning the months of April and May, ‘Toast’ included nine parties in fabulous homes and venues in the Tyler area,” said Darla Childress, the 2016 Chair. “When all parties were completed the event had raised over $280,000, well beyond the goal. All the proceeds benefit the Women’s Board designated project: this new Mobile Mammography Coach! With the participation of our gracious party Hosts, our generous sponsors and the entire Women’s Board, we were able to mobilize the community and make a real impact for Women’s health in Northeast Texas.” “The past year was a wonderful success, and we are incredibly proud to be carrying this event forward in 2017,” said Jion Dietz, the 2017 A Toast to East Texas Co-Chair. “The Women’s Board and the surrounding community are committed to maintaining this effort and to enacting positive and lasting impact in Women’s health care.”

“This year, the funds raised will go to support a newly planned Pediatric Waiting Room of the Emergency Department at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler,” said Mercedes Noteware, 2017 event Co-Chair. “As many as 13,000 children come through the doors of the Emergency Department every year. This dedicated Pediatric space - apart from the adult emergency area - will shield children from potentially frightening adult emergencies and have many child-friendly features to help make their visit as smooth as possible, and minimize stress. The area will be designed with attention to the small things that can make a big difference to children and their families.” For more information about the annual A Toast to East Texas event, contact Suzie Rippy, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation, 903.606.4752 or suzie.rippy@tmfhc.org

Flight For Life Adds Fixed-Wing Aircraft to Fleet

At a press event on November 9, 2016, Flight For Life announced the addition of a new fixed-wing Pilatus PC-12/45 to its fleet of lifesaving aircraft. This will allow the for increased speed, efficiency and capacity of its air ambulance services throughout the multi-state coverage area. “This new fixed-wing aircraft will open a world of possibilities and services to patients in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma,” said Stan Holden, Chief Executive Officer of Flight For Life. “Flight For Life’s fixed-wing service will serve as a connector for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System’s dedication to fiscal responsibility as a steward of community resources and leader of health care innovation throughout the country. With this aircraft, we will achieve greater economies of scale, extending the reach and mission of each of the system’s locations and services throughout a much larger area.” In addition to what the helicopter ambulance service currently provides, the fixed-wing aircraft adds another facet to the patient-transport capabilities of Flight For Life. The fixed-wing aircraft will allow Flight 7 TRINITYTALK tribune SPRING 2017

For Life nurses and paramedics the opportunity to ensure the continuity of care for patients as they move from one facility to another, both within CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System and beyond. “Having a Flight For Life fixed-wing aircraft based in Tyler will establish greater efficiencies and allow for improved response capabilities for Flight For Life’s ground ambulance counterpart, Champion EMS,” said Scott Kunkel, RN, MBA, NREMT-P, CMTE, FP-C, Chief Administrative Officer, Flight For Life. “Flight For Life will reduce the burden of groundbased EMS units tasked to transport patients long distances, thereby increasing the capability of Champion EMS units to respond to local 911 emergencies.” “The PC-12 aircraft will allow Flight for Life to extend our critical care transport medicine expertise to a greater population of patients in Texas and our surrounding states. The increased speed, range, operational ceiling, all-weather capability, and the ability to operate out of relatively small airfields make it an excellent platform to provide

Flight For Life Adds Fixed-Wing Aircraft to Fleet, continued the same high quality critical care as we do in our rotor aircraft, but in an extended environment,” said Mark Anderson, MD, Chief of Emergency Care at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “Transporting patients in a pressurized cabin allows our aeromedical crews to operate over the top of weather that could potentially ground our helicopter fleet, and the controlled cabin pressure protects our patients physical condition at those altitudes. The increased interior space provides more physical access to both the patient and the critical life support equipment utilized by our teams of flight nurses and specially trained paramedics. The same ventilators, monitors, and specialty equipment, such as intraaortic balloon pumps and pediatric transport pods, that we utilize in our rotor aircraft will be available for the fixed wing platform, increasing the interoperability of our crew members. We look forward to meeting the critical care transport medicine needs of our future patients and their families.” The PC-12/45 has a pressurized cabin with a service ceiling of 30,000 feet, cruise speed of 327 miles-per-hour (285 knots), and a range exceeding 1,800 nautical miles (nm). Flight For Life can accommodate a combination of up to one patient, two pilots and three clinical crew members in the PC-12/45, however, standard configuration and crew are one pilot and two clinical crew. The Pilatus PC-12 offers an incredible Flight Management System, room for a patient’s family member and extensive medical equipment.

“The fixed wing aircraft offers increased poor-weather capability, as well.” said Kunkel. “The fixed wing aircraft’s marginal weather capability exceeds even that of Flight For Life’s instrument-certified helicopter and includes the ability to fly in icing conditions. Range, speed, efficiency and capacity are more favorable for the fixed wing aircraft when the distance of transport is longer. For instance, the identified primary service area for each of Flight For Life’s four operational helicopters is roughly 100 miles from their bases in Palestine, Winnsboro, Longview and Wills Point; whereas the primary service area for the fixed wing aircraft will be 350 miles – and the range actually extends up to 1,800 miles, if required.” “The increased range and reach of the fixed-wing aircraft will extend the mission of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System by providing access to CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler and the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler as tertiary care destination facilities that provide specialty care medicine across a much broacher geographic landscape,” said Lindsey Bradley, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer for CHRISTUS Northeast Texas and Senior Vice President of Group Operations for CHRISTUS Health. “The increased range of Flight For Life’s services will be a force-multiplier for integrating a network of hospitals across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and many other states that are linked under the CHRISTUS Health System.”

Eight ‘Women With Heart’ Honored

WOMENWITHHEART

Eight brave East Texas women received special recognition last month for their battle against cardiac disease as part of the annual Women With Heart events. In coordination with February’s National Heart Month, and in conjunction with KYTX CBS 19, events put the spotlight on Shirley Knight, Sonja Bolton, Debra Wilkerson, Wendy Woodcock, Mollye

Ivory-Bowie, Norma Jackson, Patusa Mayfield and Faye Miller. Each of these ladies received care and treatment at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler. In addition to honoring the battles endured by these women, the Women With Heart events served as an educational opportunity for the community about the risks of heart disease. According to statistics from the American Heart Association, heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases cause approximately half of all deaths in American women, and one-out-of-three women over age 65 have some form of heart disease. This information thoroughly dispels the once long-held notion that heart disease affected primarily only men. Statistics show that heart disease is the biggest threat to the women and men of East Texas. Additional research also indicates that women are the primary decision makers when it comes to family healthcare. However, far too often that simply means they are taking care of everyone but themselves, ignoring simple warning signs such as an aching jaw. christustmf.org 8

Eight ‘Women With Heart’ Honored, continued Women With Heart exists to help dispel myths and spread helpful information that encourages prevention and preparation, which are the best forms of treatment. Such treatment is highly necessary and encouraged given that there are few regular preventive measures that can be taken, unlike, say scheduling screenings for skin or breast cancer. These events throughout the month of February provide an opportunity

for CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System to shine a light on a real, tangible problem in Northeast Texas and the nation. It allows the System to educate the community of the risks associated with this disease and how to prepare one’s self for the potential fallout. However, more fundamentally, Women With Heart provides the opportunity for the physicians, staff and Associates of the System to give back to the community they call home.

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler Named to Truven Top 100 CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler has been once again named among the top 100 hospitals in the nation by Truven Health Analytics. The ranking is the most comprehensive, academically driven study of its kind. The process evaluates clinical and operational performance in 11 areas including inpatient mortality, 30-day mortality rate, complications, core measures, 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate, severity-adjusted average length of stay, mean emergency room throughput, inpatient expense per discharge, Medicare spend per beneficiary, adjusted operating profit margin and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The winners were announced in the March 6 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this award,” said Jason Proctor, Chief Operating Officer, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler and the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler. “Our designation as a Truven 100 Top Hospital® is an incredible accomplishment for our entire team, and I am proud of our CHRITUS Trinity Clinic provider s and the entire CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System team who made this a reality.” Truven representatives said they observed unprecedented improvement among the hospitals ranked during the evaluation period. “The hospital industry’s ongoing transition from fee-for-service to value-based care appears to be bearing some positive results for both patients

and payers,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics. “The magnitude of improvement we’ve observed over the last five years is greater than any other five-year period we’ve tracked. On top of that, this year’s winners have reached new highs in performance in comparison to peers across the country, which suggests that improvement in value from hospitals is likely to continue.” The Top 100 Hospitals study is a non-elective evaluation conducted annually since 1993. During the process, researchers evaluate close to 3,000 shortterm, acute-care, nonfederal hospitals. CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler has previously earned this award in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016. “Once again, the effort and initiative of the entire CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances team on behalf of our patients has been rewarded by Truven, and we couldn’t be prouder,” said Chris Glenney, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “This award is a wonderful example of our commitment to providing the very highest quality health care the people of Northeast Texas, and each year our entire team works diligently with the goal of improving patient experience. We believe that by continually improving the quality of our care, advancing the services we provide and expanding access for our patients, we will continue to be recognized as a leader in healthcare as we work toward our Mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.”
