Working Together for Good Have you ever looked at the unique colored pieces that make up a stained glass window and contemplated their similarity to the many fragments of time that make up your own life? There are countless moments that, on their own, form no pattern and make no sense -- like shards of stained glass -- until they are joined together to form an incredible work of art or a rich, purpose-filled life. In thinking about the pieces that must be bonded to create these distinctive works of art, I find myself comparing this to the many people committed to furthering the mission of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. You, our treasured supporters, are individuals who, when your efforts are combined, make a transformational difference in the health care of the families of this region. Your gifts work together for good to provide excellence in clinical care to all patients, along with an exemplary patient health care experience. The cover of our Spirit of Giving Fall 2016 issue shows the stained glass windows of the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital Chapel, designed by artist Derek McLane. The image portrays Christ the Healer, and the scene depicts crowds being drawn from afar to witness and be blessed by the miraculous healing powers of Jesus. The chapel was made possible through a generous gift from Celeste and Bob Rekieta in honor of their parents, Peaches and Louis Owen and Rita and Paul Rekieta. The chapel also honors The Women Religious who have dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ through their compassionate service to others. “It was our goal in supporting the creation of this beautiful chapel to provide comfort to every individual who enters the heart hospital, and to inspire faith in every family member who seeks a place of solace during a difficult time,� says Celeste Rekieta. 4

A Year at a Glance 2015 Extra Life Benefits Children’s Miracle Network
Extra Life unites thousands of gamers from around the world. The East Texas Miracle Team, led by 2000 Miracle Child Jeff Wright, hosted a gaming event on November 5, 2015, raising $5,246 through the power of play.

Two outstanding Miracle Makers were honored and $90,100 was raised at the fourth annual event, Miracles Begin With You! on Thursday, January 28, 2016. Supporters expressed heartfelt thanks to Brenda Morris, MD, and Bonnie Tincher, MSN, two champions for children’s health.

The first annual A Toast to East Texas Women’s Board event raised over $280,000 to help fund the purchase of a new Mobile Mammography Coach, to be launched in
early 2017. Multiple parties took place in the lovely homes of generous patrons over one month in the spring, from April to May 2016 – a great beginning for what promises to be an iconic array of celebrations.

Miracle Network Dance Marathon
For 19 years, KMOO/99.9FM and their loyal community of listeners have been making miracles possible for Northeast Texas children. This year the faithful radio audience contributed a record-breaking $50,499 for pediatric patients treated by CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.
This year, CMNH at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances benefitted from two exceptional student-led Dance Marathon programs. Stephen F. Austin and The University of Texas at Tyler students came out to dance their hearts out in celebration, raising a total of $11,461.

Gracious Northeast Texans will again open their homes and host the second annual Foundation Women’s Board primary fundraiser, A Toast to East Texas from April to May 2017. The multiple party event will raise funds to support projects that improve health care for women and children in our region. Cheers to that mission!

Where the Money Meets the Miracles • Dedicated ECHO Ultrasound machine for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to perform cardiac diagnostic testing on our most fragile patients
On August 2, 2016, the generosity of Northeast Texas was turned from dollars to miracles as a committee of dedicated community members allocated $1.2 million dollars of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals funds to purchase pediatric equipment and support programs at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. As they do each year, our Health System’s devoted caregivers submitted a list of requests for consideration, each intended to further the tradition of exceptional pediatric care in the region we serve.
• High fidelity infant simulator will allow our Flight For Life team to experience critical care procedure training for pediatric patients • Drowning and concussion education for first grade students and families in the Winnsboro area Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals will continue to be the primary supporter of the Child Life program, providing emotional and educational support for children and families, as well as the Special Needs program and the Respite Care program, both of which support families of medically fragile children.
At the end of an exhaustive deliberation process, your gifts funded an exciting list of projects: • Multi-sensory distraction station for the Child Life program. This item will help young and special needs patients cope with invasive medical procedures.

We All Have a Why… Celebrate Yours. CMNH Celebration! Telethon 2016
The 29th annual Celebration! Telethon took over the airwaves at KYTX - CBS19 on June 4th, 2016 and for two days Northeast Texans were treated to inspirational and personal examples of why it’s important to open your hearts and give to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Your generosity enables CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances to transform the lives of the children in our region. One look at this year’s Miracle Child, Luke Skinner, with his sweet smile and energetic presence, and the viewers at home found their own motivation to support this great endeavor. The presence of Luke, along with many past Miracle Children, was strong encouragement for the tireless volunteers, including generous local and national sponsors, the outstanding media partners who support this cause, and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Associates. It’s Hip to be Square CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation, in the Regions Bank building on the square in Downtown Tyler, continued its series of Texas artist installations with two important exhibits this year.
The Foundation would like to thank Robert Langham III, artist, photographer and curator of these two wonderful shows. We are grateful for his thoughtful placement of the works and his commitment to expanding the art experience outside a gallery or museum.
The Art of A.C. Gentry
Come visit the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation office, Suite 800 in the Regions Bank building, and view our current art installation, the beautiful paintings of Diane Frossard.
Texas Artist and local legend, A.C. Gentry, is recognized not only for his painting talent, but also for his preservation of our area’s history. Mr. Gentry’s work became the second exhibit for the Foundation, and an event showcasing his work was held on January 21, 2016. He has been sketching and painting East Texas since he was five years old. East Texas was mostly rural back then, and old barns and farmhouses held a special appeal for him. In addition to farming, Gentry’s work brings to life the colorful oil boom days. The artist presented a gallery talk after an introduction by fellow artist Robert Langham, the curator of the show. “This artist has not only amazed our eyes, but has also recorded our history," said Langham.

An Open House for an exhibit heralding the work of photographer and microbiologist, Loyd Sneed, MD was held on July 26, 2016. The exhibit was a product of his time spent in the wilderness areas of Alaska, California, Idaho and Texas and showed the beautiful convergence of nature and art through the lens of a scientist. The main task according to Dr. Sneed: how to fit the beauty of the outdoor grandeur within a small, two-dimensional frame. In his gallery talk, Dr. Sneed expressed hope that his work reflects some of the beauty he has found in the wilderness.

Dr. Brenda Morris has been the force behind the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital since its inception. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that our tiniest patients go home healthy. Clinical Nurse Specialist Bonnie Tincher, MSN, CNS, RNCOB/EFM has a deep heart for mothers and babies, and she shows this every day as she compassionately guides high risk mothers-to-be through complex pregnancies. Both women were recognized for their dedication to continuing the tradition of excellence in the care of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances’ most vulnerable children. During the evening, a very surprised Challi Korenek was honored with the Mildred C. Crawford Heart For Children Award, recognizing her volunteerism and her commitment to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Thanks to generous supporters, over $90,100 was raised!

You Are Making a Difference The Lurlene Shepherd Scholarship and the Connie Mead Nursing Scholarship Presentations
The Lurlene Shepherd Memorial Scholarship for Nursing Education is given annually in memory of Lurlene Shepherd, whose dedication to lifelong, self-motivated learning inspired this endowment. Mrs. Shepherd grew up in Alabama during the Depression, and was forced to drop out of high school to work to feed her large family. Later, she obtained her high school graduate equivalency degree and continued throughout her life to expand her knowledge through extensive reading and intellectual curiosity. Mrs. Shepherd was the mother of Dr. James Robert Shepherd III, who established this endowment in her memory.

CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation was pleased to present the 2016 Lurlene Shepherd Scholarship for Nursing Education award to Casey Brown. Casey has worked for the health system for four years and is currently the Clinic Manager for CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic Cardiology. She has developed numerous processes for cardiology that have been adopted by other clinic managers throughout the health system. Casey will graduate from the LVN Program and enter the RN Transitional Program in January 2017 and plans to pursue a Master’s in Nursing Administration. Thank you to our partner, James R. Shepherd, III, MD, for his commitment to furthering the education of passionate and dedicated nurses like Casey Brown. Your generosity directly impacts quality health care throughout Northeast Texas! In late 2015, Connie and Richard Mead of CR Scrubs in Tyler established the Connie Mead Nursing Scholarship. Mrs. Mead graduated from the St. Luke’s School of Nursing and worked in medical/surgical units, home health care, and as a nursing instructor. She became very interested in the disease process of diabetes and obtained her certification as a Diabetes Educator, the first in the State of Iowa. Upon moving to Tyler, Mrs. Mead worked for several years at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances before she and her husband Richard opened CR Scrubs in 2001. As a family business, the Meads pride themselves in providing superior customer service and a commitment to giving back to their community, as evidenced by their very special scholarship gift.

CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System is pleased to announce Jean Davi Pellegalle, RN, as the first recipient of the 2016 Connie Mead Nursing Scholarship. Davi has worked for the Health System for eight years, and is currently a Charge Nurse/RN in the Telemetry Unit at the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital. As a preceptor for newly hired nurses on the unit, Davi assists in training and leading his team with a spirit of excellence, always striving to exceed every patient’s expectations. Davi will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2016 and plans to pursue a Master’s in Nursing Administration. The women of Northeast Texas will have a new tool in the fight against breast cancer thanks to the vision of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances and the determination of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation Women’s Board. In 2016, these powerful champions of women’s and children’s health care designated the purchase of a new mammography coach as the beneficiary of their 2016 fund raising efforts. This essential project garnered a wealth of support from the community, who came out in droves to give to the Women’s Board 2016 event, A Toast to East Texas.

It travels to churches, shopping centers and business parks in remote areas, allowing women to step out of their homes and into a healthier life. The new coach is equipped with a heavy duty electric step, ADA approved wheelchair lift, larger changing room and many more features that will enable it to serve the region for decades to come. Unveiling of the new vehicle is projected for early 2017!

Cheers to the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation Women's Board, for the outstanding success of their new annual event, A Toast to East Texas! Spanning the months of April and May, “Toast” included nine parties in fabulous homes and venues in the Tyler area. Party choices ranged from Meatballs, Martinis and Madness, to Night Golf, to a Run for the Roses. When all parties were completed the event had raised over $280,000, well beyond the goal. All the proceeds benefit the Women’s Board designated project, a new Mobile Mammography Coach, which is in production and will hit the streets of Northeast Texas in early 2017!

We Dance For Those Who Can’t This Generation Fighting for the Next Miracle Network Dance Marathon is a movement of high school and college students across North America, raising funds and awareness for the programs supported by their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This year, CMNH at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances benefitted from two exceptional student-led Dance Marathon programs in Northeast Texas. Stephen F. Austin State University hosted their inaugural SFA Dance Marathon on April 15, 2016. Over 150 students came out to dance their hearts out to help the children in their community, raising $8,336. One week later, the Patriots of The University of Texas at Tyler made their mark on the Miracle Network Dance Marathon movement with their first-ever “Talonthon.” A night of Zumba, basketball and tag with several Miracle Children in attendance culminated in the celebration of $3,125 raised for CMN Hospitals at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “We look forward to these programs becoming campus traditions at these two schools,” said Robin Rowan, Director of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. "It is inspiring what a group of dedicated and determined students can accomplish. They have already made a big statement in support of Northeast Texas kids, and we can’t wait to see what miracles are in store for the future.”
Radio Fans Make Miracles Happen Record-Breaking Funds Raised by KMOO For Kids Radiothon
For 19 years, KMOO/99.9FM and their loyal community of listeners have been making miracles possible for Northeast Texas children at their annual KMOO for Kids Radiothon benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. When the 2016 KMOO Radiothon concluded, following several tearful dedications and a very generous matching pledge, the faithful radio audience had contributed a record-breaking $50,499 for children treated by CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. Founded by the late Jason Hightower, this wonderful community event is broadcast live from the parking lot of Walmart in Mineola, Texas. With General Manager Tonya Slayton and Program Director Clayton Neville manning the microphones, loyal listeners as well as spectators in attendance were treated to emotional and inspiring stories of local children whose lives have been forever impacted by the generosity of CMNH supporters. Each penny will be used to bring health and hope to the children of our region through the services and programs supported by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

A Run to Remember
3rd Annual Tyler Rose City Miracle Run Undaunted by a series of heavy thunderstorms, nearly 400 runners turned out at Rose Rudman Park to Run for Miracles at the 3rd Annual Tyler Rose City Miracle Run 5K and Family Fun Run on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Enthusiasm was not dampened by downed tree limbs or water-covered pathways. There were lots of smiles as runners and walkers of all ages crossed the finish line knowing they made a difference for the kids in our community, raising a grand total of $49,049. The programs of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals support vital pediatric services provided by CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances hospitals and clinics. In addition to funding the purchase of specialized equipment, CMNH funds pediatric programs and education to arm caregivers with the knowledge and resources needed to provide the best possible care for the children in our community.

A career firefighter, the physical demands of serving his community had taken a toll on his body, and the pain in his knee had begun to impair his mobility. Healing kids through the power of play, from video games to board games – what a concept! Extra Life unites thousands of gamers from around the world, encouraging them to play their favorite games while raising money for their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In its inaugural year, the East Texas Miracle Team, led by 2000 Miracle Child Jeff Wright, hosted a gaming event at The University of Texas at Tyler on November 5, 2015. Players from across East Texas came together for a Super Smash Brothers tournament, and to enjoy an evening of gaming. The East Texas Miracle Team hosts weekly online live-streaming gaming events and continues to fundraise year-round. Now expanded to Nacogdoches, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System is looking forward to multiple Extra Life gaming events this fall! An interview with artist Derek McLane, stained-glass window designer of the chapel in the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital McLane describes the scene: “The design features Christ “in action.” The visual of Christ’s hand, reaching out to bless a mother who has brought her child for healing is powerful. Everyone can connect to the fear and grief the mother appears to experience. We see a lame man coming to be healed, and beyond him, a blind man being aided by his friend, but at the same time, held in reserve by another friend. This captures the challenge that exists in belief, to follow something we are unsure of. Next, we see a group of doubters, cautious spectators watching the miracles at hand, but not yet believing. This is followed by more people being drawn from a far-away city. And last, but not least, there is a small child under a palm tree, nestled away, looking at her own slice of God. This captures that aspect of humanity who may not know God, but who still connect with Him.” The artist says, “God has not forgotten them and still blesses them, whether they recognize it or not. This is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the scene, for I remember the day I didn't believe, when I was present, but not knowing...if that makes sense.”
“I can't express enough how satisfying it was to be involved in a project of such magnitude, a project that hopefully will touch the lives of many, as they come to seek peace in their time of trial, to seek Christ in their time of need and find healing,” said Derek McLane from his Branson, Missouri studio. Derek stresses that the project, creating the stained-glass windows for the chapel in the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital, was truly a collaborative effort. Although he conceptualized, designed and art directed the installation, he credits Joe and Barbara Miller and their team at Glassworks for being incredibly influential and key partners in the projects’ success. They assisted in the choice of glass and had incredible knowledge of building and installation. And all of the work was done under the watchful eye of Freda Vaughn at Studio Art's Desire, Dallas, until its completion in December of 2012. “And how precious it was collaborating with Joe, Barb and Freda, a team that truly deserves more credit than I do,” Derek exclaimed. According to the team, working with a semi-circular canvas was a unique attribute, but more challenging was that the panels were located within the building, where light was not a key player. “Stained-glass only comes to life when light is added,” said Derek. To address this problem, the Glassworks crew created a two-sided design, requiring each panel to be fabricated twice, with a mirrored effect. The panels were then placed on either side of a light box, and then set in a frame. This produced an inward glow from every angle.
McLane continues, “God's golden rays of love pour down on His creation from the upper left panel. There is a dove, representing the Holy Spirit, and three red ribbons trail and weave their way through the panels. Red represents Christ's blood, the ribbons represent the Trinity, and specifically how the Trinity weaves in and out of our lives through time. To capture that, we designed one ribbon to end in the scene (past), one ends at the doorway (present) and one continues beyond our scene (the future).”
The design is presented from left to right, which draws the audience around to the chapel doorway and invites guests inside the chapel. When they enter, they see the design as concave, allowing them to view the total image.
Derek McLane intended for this design to give patients and their families a moment of peace and that their fears and concerns will be relieved. That Christ, the Healer, as this piece is named, has it covered. “All of it,” said designer Derek. “They just have to let go and let God.”

Honoring the Lives of our Foundation Champions CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System has lost two of our brightest lights this year. Both men have lead the way, beacons of generosity who have enabled our health system to transform lives, positively change the communities we serve, and provide hope to patients and their loved ones.
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” “Smart as a whip,” “thoughtful,” “caring,” “a true gentleman” – these words have been used by many to describe Louis W. Owen, truly a shining example of generosity in our community. Mr. Owen passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016 in Tyler. He was 82 years-old. Louis and Peaches Owen established the Louis and Peaches Owen Family Foundation as a means to share their financial good fortune. This fund has provided critical support to many organizations across Northeast Texas and also in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area. In 2010, Louis and Peaches celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with an overwhelmingly generous lead gift to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System, to help construct the region's first stand-alone heart hospital, the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital. "We wanted this to become a major heart hospital, and the best in the country," said Peaches Owen. "We were hoping to make this a destination facility for patients who need heart care in Northeast Texas and across the nation." Louis lived to serve others throughout the community, as evidenced by his unfailing acts of charity. He served his friends with a warm smile, a helpful hand and a gracious heart. He could always be counted on when one was in need. He served his faith with unbridled passion in his love for Christ, but most importantly, he served his family. He always welcomed you with a twinkle in his eyes and love in his heart. Louis and Peaches Owen made their vision of a world-class heart hospital in Tyler a reality for the families of our region. Their gift to the community – a legacy of excellent heart care for the people of Northeast Texas.

1 Timothy 4:12 “Be thou an example for believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” To define Ben E. Sutton by a single term would be quite a challenge. He was a Master Mason, an oil man, a distinguished alumnus, and a civic and cultural leader. He was a man whose philanthropic spirit would light the way for others to follow in service and commitment to the community. Mr. Sutton passed away on August, 22, 2016 in Tyler. He was 92 years old. Ben and wife Elizabeth have been involved in many worthy causes in Tyler, including generous contributions to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. The impact their gifts have made over the years is immense. The growing demand for cardiology services would not have been met without generous and caring people like the Suttons. “Ben was a wonderful, kind, talented, intelligent man and great leader,” said Elizabeth Sutton of her husband. “He had an insatiable passion to serve God and mankind, and he lifted and inspired those around him,” she said. The Suttons have had a special interest in the heart fund and we are so grateful for their ongoing philanthropic commitment to CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances benefiting the programs of the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital. We are thankful for the long relationship we have had with them, they have truly been partners and we cherish their spirit of giving. “It seems like every time we met, Ben was talking about giving to others. I always enjoyed our time together and walked away wanting to be a better steward of what we've been blessed with,” said Scott Fossey, President of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. “He will be missed.” We at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation have always felt a special connection to this wonderful couple, and we are so grateful to them.
