Welcome to Riverhead At the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce we invite you to discover all that Riverhead has to offer. Here at the end, or some may say the beginning of the Long Island Expressway, you’ll find the East End’s gateway town and epicenter of Long Island’s backyard! Superb beaches, renown golf courses, widely acclaimed vineyards and wineries, a world class Aquarium, a thrill filled water theme park, leading hotels, country inns and restaurants for every taste and budget, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Long Island’s east end. Riverhead serves as the East End’s retail and service mecca. Beginning with the Tanger Outlets at Exits 72 and 73, the 132 acre shopper’s paradise is home to over 165 manufacturers and designer outlet stores. Just east on Route 25, visitors can enjoy our downtown pubs, bistros and brand new world class restaurants, or shop the quaint, unique shops that dot Polishtown, Main Street and country roads. Visitors can shop ‘local” at our famous farm stands and “pick your own” farms that dot every road leading to and out of our great town. Families have been shopping in Riverhead since it’s founding in 1792 as “the marketplace of eastern Long Island”, one visit and you’ll understand why! In more recent years, Riverhead has also become home to family entertainment and east end getaway weekends. Splish Splash Water Park adds new attractions each season, families visit Atlantis Marine World year round and the Chamber is thrilled to welcome the brand new Long Island Exhibition Center featuring a live “Butterflies” exhibit. With the growth of agritourism and destination weddings on the East End, leading hotel brands have sprouted up throughout the town, in addition to the Hilton Garden Inn, the Holiday Inn Express, and newly opened Hotel Indigo, Hyatt Place is now open on Main Street in downtown Riverhead. It is an honor to serve as President of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce. Our entire focus is the support of the Riverhead market. We’re currently working on introducing a consumer oriented marketing program designed to support our members and build a bridge to the many consumers that live, work and play in Riverhead. Welcome to the Town of Riverhead From the first bloom of crocus in spring, to the lazy days of summer at our shore, the crisp beauty of an autumn walk and the tranquility of a farm field on a snow covered day Riverhead is the place to be for all seasons and reasons. In Riverhead our downtown is renewing, rebuilding and reinventing itself so that it will once again be a beacon on Long Island’s east end. In Riverhead, we are proud of our farming tradition and the vital role that the bounty of our soil has played in the growth of our town. In Riverhead, we are blessed with hearty waterways, bays and the majestic Peconic River which inspired the very name of our town. Riverhead is the home of the Long Island Aquarium and Convention center which celebrates our proximity to the water and man’s love of the sea. Riverhead is one of the most productive farm communities in New York State, we are home to the Tanger Outlet Center and “Splish Splash” is one of the nation’s largest water parks. Riverhead’s vineyards have gained international attention for the world class wine they produce. Riverhead is the home to the Polish Town festival one of the largest gatherings of its kind. Here in Riverhead our Country Fair harks back to our agricultural heritage and our cardboard boat race delights thousands as rag tag sailors try to make it down the river. The lunar module that landed on the moon was built in Riverhead at Grumman, as were the jet fighters that proudly protected the freedom of our people during the Cold War. Riverhead is our County Seat and is home to the Suffolk County Historical Museum, Suffolk Community College as well as some of the most challenging golf courses in the region and the justly renowned Friar’s Head course. You will never run out of things to do in Riverhead because here we have the sights, sounds, scenery and people that will make you feel at home for a day, a weekend, a vacation or a lifetime. theRIVERHEADPROJECT is the newest restaurant from Dennis McDermott located in Riverhead’s new emerging District Neighborhood situated downtown. It is a repurposed bank building from the early 1960s. It has clean contemporary lines inside accentuated by a 25 foot marble topped bar and a stunning double sided glass 12 foot fireplace that separates the fireplace lounge and the main dining room as well as a mahogany and steel banquette that defines a cozy seating area off the bar. The dining room itself is a contradiction of two walls of glass windows overlooking two outdoor patios and an accent wall of geometric upholstery. On the lower level is theVAULTBAR and theVAULT, a private bar and dining room that is all steel, safes and bars which can accommodate a sit down dinner at its custom 30 seat table. The menu is a blend of American and Asian with a hint of Vegetarian. The Chef Greg Ling who has worked for McDermott at his other restaurant The Frisky Oyster has teamed up with Dennis again to bring their vision of a blend of simple yet complex flavors sourced from the region and include such unique standouts like “Local Razor Clams,” “Goat Burrito,” “Blow Fish” and “Bibimbap” a Korean Rice and Vegetable Dish. tRP as it is known to those in the “know” has quickly become the “Power Lunch” Spot for the Legal and Medical Professional community and with access to both the communities of the South Fork and the North Fork as well as the proximity of four Hotels the dining room always has a lively feel and is helping to transform Riverhead into the Hub of the East End.

SKYDIVE LONG ISLAND Skydive Long Island in Calverton has moved
into one of the largest facilities to house a skydiving operation in the United States. The owner of Skydive Long Island, Ray Maynard, closed on the building known as the noise check hangar on February 7, 2012. It’s a 23,000 hangar on 16.3 acres of land abutting the taxiway of the 10,000 ft runway. Maynard founded Skydive Long Island in 1986 with a humble beginning at Spadaro’s Airport in East Moriches. He started with three parachutes, two employees and one aircraft, a Cessna 182 that could take only four jumpers up at a time. Maynard had flown over the Calverton Airpark for many years, but never thought a skydiving school would be allowed to open there. After much perseverance, Skydive Long Island received town approval to open in EPCAL in September of 2000. Maynard was relieved to move from the smallest airport and riskiest for Skydiving to the absolute largest and safest airport for skydiving just six miles away. Today Skydive Long Island has over 40 employees, two Large Turbine Aircraft-a Cessna Grand Caravan taking 19 jumpers up at a time, and a Beechcraft King Air B-90 taking 14 jumpers up at a time. Offering the highest jumps on Long Island—13,500’, and boasting the largest landing area in the U.S. Maynard said Skydive Long Island is the only full service student training center on Long Island and he is working hard to make this a destination location and a jewel in the town of Riverhead.

Both building are still standing. Picture was taken c 1912. Photograph from the Historian’s Scudder Collection was taken at the corner of West Main Street and Peconic Avenue. The first building on the left was a stationery store that sold book, paper, pens, ink, etc. You can see the stores that most likely held their residence on the second floor. The last home on the right side was the Griffing home where Grangebel Park is located. This would have been taken during WWI.

The Quogue Wildlife Refuge 76 Years of History!

The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a 305-acre nature preserve that is home to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and require human care to survive. There are over seven miles of trails where you can explore a variety of habitats including the Pine Barrens, bogs, wetlands, a field, a tidal estuary, and the ecologically rare Dwarf Pines. A bobcat, red fox, owls, falcons, and a bald eagle are some of the native New York animals that have permanent injuries and are housed in the Outdoor Wildlife Complex which can be visited any day of the year. Our main trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly and all of the trails can be enjoyed in every season! Inside the Charles Banks Belt Nature Center, you will find a warm and friendly environment where you can observe wildlife through the huge windows that overlook Old Ice Pond. A variety of exhibits, turtles, snakes, a touch table, a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s room, and a sitting area with a beautiful view of the pond can be enjoyed inside the Nature Center.

Prior to becoming a wildlife preserve, the Quogue Ice Company harvested ice on Old Ice Pond. On the grounds you can visit the Ice Harvesting Museum that has authentic, centuryold tools.
