SKYDIVE LONG ISLAND Skydive Long Island in Calverton has moved
into one of the largest facilities to house a skydiving operation in the United States. The owner of Skydive Long Island, Ray Maynard, closed on the building known as the noise check hangar on February 7, 2012. It’s a 23,000 hangar on 16.3 acres of land abutting the taxiway of the 10,000 ft runway. Maynard founded Skydive Long Island in 1986 with a humble beginning at Spadaro’s Airport in East Moriches. He started with three parachutes, two employees and one aircraft, a Cessna 182 that could take only four jumpers up at a time. Maynard had flown over the Calverton Airpark for many years, but never thought a skydiving school would be allowed to open there. After much perseverance, Skydive Long Island received town approval to open in EPCAL in September of 2000. Maynard was relieved to move from the smallest airport and riskiest for Skydiving to the absolute largest and safest airport for skydiving just six miles away. Today Skydive Long Island has over 40 employees, two Large Turbine Aircraft-a Cessna Grand Caravan taking 19 jumpers up at a time, and a Beechcraft King Air B-90 taking 14 jumpers up at a time. Offering the highest jumps on Long Island—13,500’, and boasting the largest landing area in the U.S. Maynard said Skydive Long Island is the only full service student training center on Long Island and he is working hard to make this a destination location and a jewel in the town of Riverhead.

Frank Latorre, owner of Art & Soul Gallery in Eastport, NY, is a self-taught Long Island-based artist and has worked in a wide variety of art mediums throughout his career. Starting in the early 70’s, he began custom airbrushing motorcycles, vans, boats and cars. Many of his creations won trophies and awards for the vehicles’ owners and his work has been published in many car and motorcycle magazines, including Easyriders, Iron Horse and Hot Rod. Combining his two loves of art and Blues music, Frank produced a series of portraits of great Blues and Rock legends such as Jimi Hendrix and BB King. In the early 90s, wall murals became, and continue to be, another area of Frank’s expertise. For the past few years, Frank has concentrated on acrylic painting and has produced a number of diverse series. The ocean beaches and dunes of eastern Long Island are an unending source of inspiration for him.

There is no subject he won’t attempt and he welcomes all commissions. And for those who would like to be a part of the art experience, Frank also offers painting classes at Art & Soul. Frank’s work earned him the “Westhampton Artist of the Year” 2011 award and he was chosen “Favorite Long Island Artist” 2010 by Gormusart, an association of gourmet chefs, musicians and artists. Frank’s love of Blues music led him to found The Kingbees, a blues group which has been chosen to represent Long Island 3 times at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee: in 2003, 2010 and 2011.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid runner who enjoyed running all the local races including the Long Island halfmarathon. Joe passed away of a heart attack at the very early age of 52 in 1995. The Westhampton Beach 5K was renamed in his honor. As a tribute to his father’s passion for running, the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce Annual Joe Koziarz Memorial 5K Run & Walk is directed by his son Michael.

Chilling Out From The Hamptons Glitz With John Scott’s By CARSON GRIFFITH (hamptons.guestofaguest.com) Sometimes the glam and the glitz of a long weekend can get to be a little much. Don’t get us wrong, we love a nice cool glass of rose at Day & Night, or checking out what label Nikki Hilton has on at Lily Pond as much as the next weekender. But if you’re looking for somewhere to take a load off after all the preening, plop your pretty butt in plastic chairs, and take a break from it all, we might have just the place for you. We can’t say John Scott’s Surf Shack is off the beaten path, because it certainly is not. Right on Dune Road, I still don’t know how I knew about this place before Rachelle (know-it-all...literally) and Kristin (who’s summered in Quogue her whole life), but it’s no kept secret. Filled with families, surf boys, and pre-gamers, the restaurant and bar serves above average bar food with a rowdier than average bar crowd. Live music on weekends on their deck is almost as good as their view; John Scott’s outside seating overlooks the bay. Heavy-pouring bartenders that are quick to pull out the shot-ski will definitely add to the night, as will the eclectic crowd. As mentioned before, many use John Scott’s as a starting ground before moving to their next location, varying from the Drift Inn to Pink Elephant. Personally though, any place that has lobster bibs and plastic buckets is good with me. I’m not quite sure how often you see those in Easthampton.

he Westhampton Free Library opened its doors in March of 1897 with a charter granted by the State of New York and signed by Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. In 1951, our original Library Avenue building was opened and served the community for more than 100 years, providing generations of families with books, music and programming.
In June 2010 our new state of the art library opened its doors to the residents of Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, Quiogue, East Moriches, East Quogue, Eastport, Remsenburg and Speonk. Our library is beautiful and environmentally responsible. The building was built to utilize efficient lighting, occupancy sensors, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning units, plumbing that reduces water usage by 45% and solar panels that generate 8 % of our energy. Our library serves as a community center, providing a wide spectrum of programs. Adults enjoy: book discussions; films; music performances; computer classes; holiday teas and a variety of social activities. Our exercise classes include senior aerobics, Zumba, Pilates and Tai Chi, and we offer Yoga for children, teens and adults. In our Teens space, young adults can read, play video games, watch movies and visit with friends. On our second floor, you’ll discover the Idea Place, “where children and parents come to learn and grow”. Programming for children and families includes: story time; reading clubs; music and movement classes for toddlers; cooking classes; craft workshops and much more. You can also visit the “Tween Scene”, an alcove that’s reserved just for kids ages 8-12. Throughout the library you will find DVDs, music CDs, digital audio and video players, video games, magazines, newspapers, graphic novels and lots of books. Our library’s patrons also have access to an extensive collection of eBooks and audiobooks that can be downloaded onto smart phones, laptops and tablet computers. T
he Greater Westhampton communities are famous for their Atlantic Ocean white sugar sand beaches on the barrier island known as Dune Road. Which community you live in determines which beaches you can actually access. The Villages of Westhampton Beach, Quogue and West Hampton Dunes each have their own municipal beaches for their village residents while the surrounding hamlets and have fewer free options available to them. In addition to these municipal beaches, there are ample private beach clubs and hotel related accommodations that will offer great beach experiences in the Greater Westhampton communities.
VILLAGE OF WESTHAMPTON BEACH ROGERS BEACH – Full-service Main Village Beach R P a Pavilion just south of the Beach Lane Bridge is complete w with public restrooms, snack bar concession, changing ro rooms with lockers as well as both indoor and outdoor sh showers. Lifeguards are on duty during summer season.
LASHLEY BEACH @ JETTY 4 – Limited-service Village Beach Pavilion with public restrooms and outdoor showers. This is a preferred local surf spot with a more relaxed atmosphere also with lifeguards on duty during the summer season.
Both of these Village of Westhampton Beach locations maintain parking lots and are accessible by permit for Village residents at no cost. Rogers Beach and Lashley Beach will open on weekends starting May 21st through June 5th from 10am - 5pm. The beaches will be open 7 days a week starting June 12th through Labor Day, September 6th. Non-resident beach stickers may be obtained at the Municipal Building May 21th through August 7th, 2010 on Fridays between the hours of 4-7pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The Village extends beach privileges as a courtesy to taxpayers and year-round residents residing in the hamlets of Westhampton, Quiogue, Remsenburg and Speonk for a charge of $350. Summer renters inside the Incorporated Village’s boundaries may obtain beach privileges for a fee of $350.00. Summer renters in the hamlets of Westhampton, Remsenburg, Speonk and Quiogue may obtain beach privileges for a fee of $650. At no time is random parking permitted on Dune Road for public beach access. The Quogue Wildlife Refuge 76 Years of History!

The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is a 305-acre nature preserve that is home to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and require human care to survive. There are over seven miles of trails where you can explore a variety of habitats including the Pine Barrens, bogs, wetlands, a field, a tidal estuary, and the ecologically rare Dwarf Pines. A bobcat, red fox, owls, falcons, and a bald eagle are some of the native New York animals that have permanent injuries and are housed in the Outdoor Wildlife Complex which can be visited any day of the year. Our main trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly and all of the trails can be enjoyed in every season! Inside the Charles Banks Belt Nature Center, you will find a warm and friendly environment where you can observe wildlife through the huge windows that overlook Old Ice Pond. A variety of exhibits, turtles, snakes, a touch table, a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s room, and a sitting area with a beautiful view of the pond can be enjoyed inside the Nature Center.

For those folks who enjoy history, the Refuge has plenty of it. QWR was established in 1934 as the Southampton Township Wildfowl Association, specifically to provide habitat for local waterfowl. Prior to becoming a wildlife preserve, the Quogue Ice Company harvested ice on Old Ice Pond. On the grounds you can visit the Ice Harvesting Museum that has authentic, centuryold tools. The Refuge Trails and Outdoor Wildlife Complex are open every day from sunrise to sunset. Nature Center Building is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Weekends from 11:00 A.M. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 4:00 P.M. In Memoriam Margaret “Maggie” Burbank 1926 - 2011
A Field of Yellow Tulips
December 4, 1925 - September 17, 2011 On September 17th, 2011, The Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce lost our beloved Maggie. Margaret “Maggie” Burbank of Westhampton Beach died at home on Saturday, September 17. She was 85. Born and raised in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Richard J. Barry and Wilma Grozinger Barry. After graduating from Ursuline Academy and Berkeley Business School, Ms. Burbank worked as a secretary in Manhattan until 1947 when she married William Burbank of Boston, whom she met at the Soldiers & Sailors Club in Manhattan. They had three children during the next five years. Widowed in 1959, Ms. Burbank single-handedly raised three daughters in the Bronx, imbuing them with a sense of self-sufficiency and optimism and the courage to follow their own dreams.
It was a sunny, springtime day, With warm breezes and a sunwashed sky: And contented birds trilled their tunes, But my mind was full of troubled sighs. So many problems came to haunt, And I could see no real reason why, But as I ran through the park, I missed my turn! Why even try? I stopped to rest for a moment, Beneath a tree atop a grassy knoll: And as I glanced around me, Joy bells began to toll. For there before my weary stare, Was a field of yellow tulips in full bloom, Stretched as far as I could see, And their burst of color chased away my gloom!
In 1975, she relocated to Westhampton and began her wonderful, vibrant “second act.” She worked as an office assistant at Mendenhall Fuel Company until 1995. Maggie then began her next act with a 15-year tenure as the lead office administrator of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce.
I stared in sheer amazement, I’d never seen so much gold, All those lovely, yellow tulips, Delightful and bold!
Ms. Burbank was an avid reader and enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles & cooking shows. She loved butterflies and flowers, autumn and Christmas, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole, fried oysters and soft-shell crabs, and-most especially-the color yellow.
And I knew from deep within, My dear Father was telling me, Worrying makes you sad and sick, I hope these tulips will set you free.
While she was fiercely independent and relished living alone, she had a full and happy social life in the Westhampton community. Known for her warm, bright smile, great sense of humor, and spunky spirit, Ms. Burbank possessed a joie de vivre that kept her eternally youthful. She made many close and devoted friends over the years, including more than a few who were decades younger than she, a testament to her ageless attitude and fun-loving spirit. Her family and friends mourn her loss, but celebrate her remarkable life and will always remember her loving heart and indomitable spirit.
