Happy holidays!
As the holiday season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on all the residents who have helped to shape the business of the CHOA in a most significant way. We value our relationship with you and look forward to working with you in the year to come. Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the holiday season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall! We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2 000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space. As you enjoy the festivities with friends and family, as you give and receive presents, as you gather to celebrate, please accept my best wishes to you all and your families for a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Holiday tips for the Festive Season 1.

Inform the CHOA office of holiday planning; complete a holiday form so that security can look after your premises over the holiday period.

Inform your security provider (Protea Coin) of your holiday planning, test your alarm and make sure it’s working so that response can respond to any alarm activation.

Consider an alarm system with our security provider (Protea Coin) where needed.
5.
Lock your premises properly: doors, windows and garage doors. Don’t leave valuables lying around and don’t leave keys inside doors.

Guard bonuses 2011 Less than 10 shopping days to Christmas! Over the festive period, many of us will be holidaying far away enjoying a well deserved rest with the sure knowledge that all is well back home. 2011 has been an eventful year on our Estate and we all hope that 2012 will be a better year for all of us. The new security system is up and running and the guards are getting to know the residents and we all enjoy the friendly “Good byes” and “Welcome homes” when we leave or enter the Estate. Thank you to all who have contributed to our annual security guard bonus gift initiative. Contributions are voluntary and any amount is appreciated. Please pay the contributions into the Centurion Home Owners Association’s account and put your stand number with ‘Guard Bonuses’ as a reference. CAPTAIN’S REPORT Well that takes care of that and 2011 has come to an abrupt end with more than one year end function to remind us of the year we have left behind. The knockouts are all done and it comes as no surprise that the last standing determined ladies, Sue Smith and Debra Arroyo, gave the guys a run for their money and only succumbed to the talents of Herman Minnie and Hans Jonck who were quite intimidating in their ‘dressed to win’ outfits, on hole number 18! Well done to the girls who played their way through all five rounds with no bye’s and to the guys on their endurance, to win the foursomes knockout! The Bleshoenders rounded their year off with a fabulous get
together at the club where they honoured players throughout the year, and Wim Skinner very worthily was awarded the Man of the Year. Well done Wim. It has been a wonderful privilege to share so many happy occasions with this special group of guys and I will certainly miss their camaraderie and banter when I no longer am included as the Captain. Hopefully sooner than later, I will be able to earn my spot by playing the required amount of games per year. ‘Till then many thanks to Oom Jan Schutte and the rest of the Bleshoenders. Regarding the captaincy, the dilemma of appointing someone who has not previously served on the committee and who does not appreciate the time and effort involved goes against the constitution and for that reason I have made myself available in a supportive capacity while new members are appointed onto the committee, with the idea of working alongside them and ensuring a smooth transition for one of the new members to be then be voted in as Captain. To date the rains have been great causing minimal damage to the course and especially number seven. Hopefully this continues as we prepare to hollowtine the course in January 2012. Marianne Fraser, our Ladies Captain, has recently relocated to Cape Town. She will be available for a short period in the New Year before handing over her responsibilities which have been very capably dealt with by Hayley Mendes in Marianne’s absence. Should Hayley accept the task of Ladies Captain for the following two years, I would ask you all to give her your sincerest support as she continues with the work she has tackled so enthusiastically.

Some of the knockouts have now been finalised - the ladies singles was won by Joey du Toit and the ladies better-ball knockout was won by Helena Mowatt and Karen Robinson. There was a new knockout introduced by Jannes this year Foursomes which teams could be made up of any combination, either men, ladies or mixed. Sue Smith and Debra Arroyo entered as a team and did us ladies proud, they played some really awesome golf and got through to the final where they were knocked out on the last hole by Hans Jonck and Herman Minnie, but well done to them! Our Thursday ladies Christmas lunch was held at the Fishmonger Centurion Gate on 23 November 2011 and was enjoyed by all those who attended. It was great to have Helga Engling and Elize Visser at the lunch as they have both been away for a few months recovering from operations. We held our annual prize giving at the lunch. Debra Arroyo was awarded the trophy for ‘Most Improved Player’, Hayley Mendes was awarded the trophy for ‘Player of the Year’ handicap 0 - 27 with an average of 30.86 stabelford points and the trophy for ‘Player of the Year’ handicap 28 - 36 with an average of 29 stabelford points was awarded to Anna Skinner. It has been decided that as from January 2012 the weekday ladies competition will be moved from being played on a Thursday to being played on a Tuesday. The reason behind this is that senior ladies is played on one Thursday a month and ladies league is also played on a Thursday. I am hoping that this will help improve the number of ladies taking part in the weekday competition. The first tee off time will be 7:51am. We will meet on the patio by 7:20am. All ladies of any handicap are invited to join us, please call the Pro Shop and put your name down should you wish to play. Our first competition for 2012 will be on 10 January.

Ladies Christmas Lunch
By the time you read this article the SA Open being played at Serengeti will be history. Sue Smith and I went along on day one to watch some of the golf, we had a fantastic day and got to see Retief Goosen play the last two holes. We then followed Ernie Els and George Coetzee for 12 holes, what a treat that was. They make it look so easy. The ladies leagues are starting a little later than normal next year. Women’s Scratch league starts on 22 April 2012, Women’s Thursday league starts on 24 May 2012, Women’s Saturday league starts 21 July 2012 and Mixed league will play their first game on 3 June 2012. I have decided after much thought that I will be making myself available again next year to serve on the committee.
