It’s that time of year again to get on your bathing suits and have some fun in the sun. Nothing is more miserable than getting a sunburn. Not only is it painful and kicks you out of the summer fun, but it can also be a serious medical concern. Everyone needs sunscreen, no matter what skin type, ethnicity or age you are. As you are preparing for the summer months to come, we would like to offer some skin protecting tips. ȽȽ Make sure to apply at least one ounce of sunscreen 15 minutes before you head out in the sun. ȽȽ When choosing a sunscreen, make sure that it offers broad-spectrum protection, has an SPF of 30 or higher, and is water resistant. ȽȽ Sunscreen should be applied approximately every two hours or according to the time on the label. Keep in mind that even on cloudy days, the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin. During the hours of 10 am – 2 pm, it is especially important to seek shade as the sun is the strongest at this time of day. ȽȽ Make sure to use extra caution when near water and sand as they reflect the rays of the sun. ȽȽ To protect your lips, apply a lip balm or lipstick with an SPF of 30 or higher. ȽȽ Don’t forget your sunglasses (99% UVA/UVB rays). ȽȽ Wear protective clothing (hats, rash shirts). ȽȽ Avoid tanning beds. ȽȽ Make sure to check your ‘birthday suit’ every year on your birthday for an odd look of new growths, spots, bumps, patches, or sores.

ȽȽ In the event that you do get a sunburn, treat it quickly by cooling it down with a cool shower and apply aloe vera gel or a 1% cortisone cream to help with the stinging discomfort. Take an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin to help with the pain as needed. ȽȽ Last but not least, make sure to drink plenty of water to restore fluid loss.

SIMPLE STEPS TO PREP YOUR LAWN FOR THE GROWING SEASON

ays are growing longer and temperatures are rising. Will your lawn be ready when summer hits? By following these five simple steps, you can ensure your lawn will be lush and green by the time your family is ready for some outdoor fun.
1. CLEAR THE SITE
Rake up and collect any debris that has accumulated over the winter months. Removing these rocks, leaves, and sticks now will improve air flow, reduce disease, and allow more sunlight to reach your grass. Even before green-up, tidying up debris makes a big impact on curb appeal.
2. TEST YOUR SOIL
Regular soil testing will help address your lawn’s specific needs. pH testing kits are available at home and garden centers and easy to use – just follow manufacturer’s directions. For more detailed soil testing, you can contact your local Ag Extension office. Go to http://ngturf.com/about-us/resources/ for a directory.
3. WAKE YOUR GRASS UP
We’re past the danger of frost, so it’s time to mow your lawn low to remove dormant growth. Leave ½ inch for Bermudagrass and 1 inch for other varieties. This will remove thatch and reduce mold growth. It’s also a good idea to aerate your lawn every 1 – 3 years to increase airflow to the root system. Just be sure to aerate before you apply any weed control since aerating disturbs the weed barrier created by pre-emergents.
4. APPLY PRE-EMERGENTS

Sharpen or replace the blades on your mower now. A sharper blade produces better results and cuts down on the frequency of mowing.
6. PATCH DEAD SPOTS

pring is here! This means longer days, blooming flowers, trees pushing out new foliage, and warmer days ahead. This also means the beginning of destructive tree and shrub pest activity. Last year, Atlanta experienced an extreme drought which put trees and shrubs under stress which made them more vulnerable to insect and disease problems. One group of pests that can attack plants under stress is wood-boring insects. These insects in the larval stage typically feed on inner bark and/or wood. Borers girdle the vascular system and disrupt the normal flow of water and nutrients. Newly planted trees and shrubs and those in poor health are more likely to see damage caused by borers. You may notice small holes in the trunk or branches with a sawdust-like material and/or sap and resin coming out of

the holes. Borer infestations often go unnoticed until plants or plant parts begin to die or show external signs of damage. Foliage in the upper canopy of an attacked tree or shrub will be discolored, undersized or dead.

VISIT DOWNTOWN DULUTH NOW!
W
hen you visit historic downtown Duluth you can expect to find something new at almost every corner and there are even new businesses in some of those historic buildings. So new, in fact, the concrete is still wet! There are road improvements, traffic signals, new sidewalks and pedestrian crossing areas, buildings under construction, recently added art installations, Coleman Middle School — along with new restaurants, parking, public plaza, and Main Street shops. Perhaps most startling of all is the absence of the Proctor Square shopping center, Proctor Square parking lot, and the out parcel buildings in front of Proctor Square (except the Pawn Shop). How do you know what you are seeing?
Let’s take a quick tour.
NEW RESTAURANTS: Dreamland BBQ, Piatto, O4WP, and Epicurean Café are the newest eateries to downtown. Dreamland BBQ is located at the heart of the Parsons Alley Complex at the top of Town Green on West Lawrenceville Street. Epicurean Café occupies the former Park Café location. Old Fourth Ward Pizza (O4WP) is now in the former Steverino’s location and Piatto has completely redeveloped the former Huthmaker’s Violin shop building into a full service restaurant upstairs and a bar downstairs. Good Word Brew Pub and Noona (Korean Steakhouse & Oyster Bar) will open soon in Parsons Alley. NEW RETAIL SHOPS: Personify is the newest shop to showcase their modern and whimsical 6

clothing and home décor. Crave Pie is better than ever crafting the most delicious artisan pies right here in Downtown Duluth. NEW PUBLIC PL AZA : The center of the Parsons Alley complex is the newly completed public plaza that is already becoming the gathering place for many. It features granite walls, Brazilian Ipe wood decking, future art installations, wide sidewalks and benches. New bike racks will be installed soon for bicyclist. NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND PEDESTRIAN CROSSING: West Lawrenceville Street just got a new pedestrian crosswalk for residents to utilize to get to and from Town Green. The old 3-way stop and Rail Road Crossing at Main Street has been signalized and loaded up with activated pedestrian crossings. It was no small task to coordinate a traffic signal so close to the Buford Highway and Hwy. 120 signal crossed by a very active rail corridor. The traffic signal allowed safe
passage to and from the Parsons Alley Complex and Main Street. PROCTOR SQUARE DEMOLITION: The 1970’s shopping center has been removed along with the outparcel buildings which fronted Buford Hwy. Back in February 2016, Mayor and Council approved a $64,000,000 mixed-use development which will feature a wrapped parking deck with 371 units of housing, 11 retail units, and 2 restaurants. The District in Duluth will be complete in 20 to 24 months. PARSONS ALLEY COMPLEX: The 10 foot granite gateway sign on West Lawrenceville Street announces the entrance to a mixture of old and new buildings. Just like Main Street we build on the past to set the future. What you see under construction is building 600. There are the existing buildings like the Pastorium Building 100 and the Church Building 200 being redeveloped into restaurants and the new buildings 300, 500, and 600 which will be new restaurants and retail shops all coming together to form Parsons Alley. COLEMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL: Most Duluth locals will know the name Brooks Coleman. He was the voice of the Duluth Wildcats for many years and is a retired educator and now his great record of service has been honored by naming the new middle school in Downtown Duluth after him. The school is the first Science Technology Engineering Arts Math middle school in the Gwinnett Education System.

2 large scoops vanilla ice cream, softened
1 1/2 lbs salmon fillets
4 peaches, halved and pitted
lemon pepper to taste
2 tablespoons clover honey
garlic powder to taste
1 cup soft cream cheese with honey & nuts
( Recipe makes two drinks )
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/4 cup white sugar
2 cups sliced fresh strawberries 2 fluid ounces vodka
DIRECTIONS : Stir together the vanilla ice cream and hot pepper sauce in a medium bowl. Place in the freezer until firm. Melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Stir in the sugar until dissolved, then add the strawberries. Cook, stirring occasionally until the strawberries are hot. Pour the vodka over the berries, and carefully light with a match. Let the flames burn off, then remove the pan from the heat. Scoop the hot ice cream into two bowls, then divide the strawberry vodka sauce between them. Serve immediately.

Season salmon fillets with lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt.
Preheat a grill for medium-high heat.
In a small bowl, stir together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and vegetable oil until sugar is dissolved. Place fish in a large resealable plastic bag with the soy sauce mixture, seal, and turn to coat. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Preheat grill for medium heat. Lightly oil grill grate. Place salmon on the preheated grill, and discard marinade. Cook salmon for 6 to 8 minutes per side, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
Brush peaches with a light coating of oil. Place pit side down onto the grill. Grill for 5 minutes, or until the surfaces have nice grill marks. Turn the peaches over, and drizzle with a bit of honey. Place a dollop of the cream cheese spread in the place where the pit was. Grill for 2 to 3 more minutes, or until the filling is warm. Serve immediately.
