Golf Reminders
BE SAFE! FRIENDLY REMINDERS FROM POLO HOA
Please remember that when walking or jogging through the neighborhood you should be facing (walking into) traffic. This allows you to see oncoming vehicles and allows you to get your pets out of the way as well. If you are on a bicycle (or moving vehicle) you should be going in the same direction as the traffic.
GOLF CARTS
General Federal Law for Golf Carts: Under current NHTSA interpretations and regulations, so long as golf cars and other similar vehicles are incapable of exceeding 20 miles per hour, they are subject to only state and local requirements regarding safety equipment. However, if these vehicles are originally manufactured so that they can go faster than 20 miles per hour, they are treated as motor vehicles under Federal law. The standard requires low-speed vehicles to be equipped with headlamps, stop lamps, turn signal lamps, tail lamps, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, windshields, seat belts, and vehicle identification numbers.
Only those who have a valid driver’s license are allowed to drive a golf cart ALONE. If, however, the driver is at least 12 years of age and accompanied by a licensed adult age 18 or older, they may operate the golf cart. EXCEPTION: If the driver is 15 and holds a permit, he/she may operate the golf cart alone. Golf carts may only operate on streets with posted speed limits of 35 MPH and under. This does not prohibit golf carts or lowspeed motor vehicles from crossing any road or street at properly marked crossings.
REQUIRED GOLF CART EQUIPMENT
All golf carts must have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints and must weigh less than 1,300 lbs and not top speeds of 20mph.
Golf carts that are operated between sunrise and sunset must be equipped with headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and a windshield. Golf carts that do not meet these additional standards shall only be operated during the hours between sunrise and sunset.

FIRE SAFETY
As a Realtor and proud resident of our vibrant and family-oriented community, I write this article in light of recent events to emphasize a critical aspect that directly affects the safety and well-being of our cherished neighborhood: fire safety. While we revel in the joys of living amidst the serene greens and engaging amenities, it is paramount that we prioritize the protection of our homes and loved ones from fire hazards. My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced a loss such as this. With respect to the homeowners and their privacy, we hope to provide any assistance we can to help fellow neighbors when the need arises.
Fires can occur unexpectedly and cause significant damage. Protecting yourself and your belongings in the event of a house fire requires proactive planning and preventive measures. While it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and evacuate immediately during a fire, here are some steps you can start implanting now and steps to take in advance to safeguard your belongings:
• Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms:
Every home should be equipped with functioning smoke alarms on every level. Ensure that smoke alarms are regularly inspected, and batteries replaced at least once a year. Test them monthly to guarantee their effectiveness in alerting you and your family to potential fire emergencies.
• Develop a Fire Escape Plan for the Entire Family: Create a comprehensive fire escape plan for your household, involving all family members, including pets. Identify multiple exit routes from each room and establish a designated meeting point outside your home. Practice the escape plan regularly to ensure everyone is well-prepared and familiar with the procedures. Post a sign/decal near your front door that alerts authorities that there are pets inside.
• Conduct Routine Safety Inspections:
Regularly inspect your home for potential fire hazards. Check electrical outlets for overloading and ensure wiring is in good condition. Keep flammable materials away from heat sources and maintain clear access to fire extinguishers and fire exits. Regularly clean dryer vents to prevent lint buildup, which can pose a fire risk.
• Practice Kitchen Safety:
The kitchen is often a hotspot for fire incidents. Exercise caution while cooking, and never leave the stove unattended. Keep flammable objects away from burners and ensure that all appliances are turned off after use. Install a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
The Polo Newsletter // July 2023 18
and have a fire blanket available for small grease fires.
• Mind Outdoor Fire Safety:
While enjoying the days of summer, it’s essential to prioritize outdoor fire safety. Follow the guidelines set by the County using grills, fire pits, or other open flames. Maintain a safe distance from structures and flammable materials, and never leave fires unattended. Ensure all fires are fully extinguished after use.
• Create a Home Inventory:
Develop a detailed inventory or video of your belongings, including photographs, receipts, and descriptions of valuable items. This will help you assess the value of your possessions for insurance purposes and simplify the claims process if you experience a fire. Store a copy of the inventory in a safe location outside your home, such as a safety deposit box or cloud storage.
• Backup Important Documents: Make digital copies of important documents, such as passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, and financial records. Store these backups securely in the cloud or on an external hard drive. Additionally, consider keeping physical copies in a fireproof safe or a separate off-site location.
• Safeguard Irreplaceable Items: Identify and protect irreplaceable items, such as family heirlooms, photographs, and sentimental possessions. Store these items in fireproof safes, fire-resistant storage boxes, or a safe deposit box at a bank. This will offer an extra layer of protection in case of a fire.
• Install Fireproof Storage Solutions: Invest in fire-resistant storage options, such as fireproof safes, fire-rated file cabinets, and fireproof bags or boxes. These containers are designed to withstand high temperatures and provide a safe haven for important documents, hard drives, and other valuables.
• Utilize Off-Site Storage: Consider using off-site storage facilities to store valuable or sentimental items. Renting a secure storage unit allows you to store items safely away from your home, reducing the risk of losing them in the event of a fire.
• Maintain Adequate Insurance Coverage:
Regularly review your homeowners insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your belongings. Update your policy as necessary to reflect any changes in the value of your possessions. Work closely with your insurance agent to understand your coverage limits and any additional endorsements that may be beneficial for high-value items.
• Document and Update:
Continuously document any new purchases or significant changes to your belongings. Update your home inventory regularly to reflect these additions or modifications. This will ensure that you have an accurate record of your possessions in case of a fire.
A s the Fourth of July approaches and we celebrate with fireworks and festivities, it’s important to prioritize fire safety to ensure a fun and accident-free holiday. Here are some essential fire safety tips to keep in mind:
• Attend the Polo Golf and Country Club Fireworks Event! Every year, this event gets better and better and brings us all together for a fantastic afternoon of good food, great neighbors, games and a fantastic fireworks show.
• Leave It to the Professionals: Fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly. It is strongly recommended to leave the fireworks displays to trained professionals. Enjoy the stunning shows they put on here in our neighborhood, the Cumming Fairgrounds, Wills Park in Alpharetta, Lake Lanier Islands, or Stone Mountain, just to name a few, while ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you.
• Keep a Safe Distance:
If you choose to use fireworks at home where permitted, always maintain a safe distance from people, buildings, and flammable materials. Follow the instructions provided by the fireworks manufacturer and respect the recommended safety distances.
• Never DIY or Modify Fireworks: Never attempt to make your own fireworks or modify existing ones. This can be extremely dangerous and may lead to unpredictable and hazardous situations. Only use fireworks as intended and avoid any alterations.
• Have a Water Source Nearby : Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher readily available in case of any emergencies. This can help you quickly extinguish small fires or sparks and prevent them from spreading.
• Supervise Children:
If children are present, ensure they are supervised at all times, especially around fireworks. Teach them about the dangers of fireworks and instruct them to never pick up or play with fireworks that may have failed to ignite.
• Dispose of Used Fireworks Safely: After fireworks have been used, douse them with water before disposing of them in a designated, non-flammable container. This helps ensure they are fully extinguished and reduces the risk of accidental fires.
• Be Mindful of Dry Conditions: During the summer months, dry conditions can increase the risk of fire incidents. Pay attention to local weather conditions and any fire danger warnings. Avoid using fireworks in areas where vegetation or structures are at a high risk of catching fire.
A s always, in case of a fire or fireworkrelated emergency, immediately contact the appropriate emergency services in your area. Prompt reporting can help prevent the situation from escalating and ensure a quick response.
B y embracing fire safety practices and fostering a culture of awareness within our awesome neighborhood, we demonstrate our commitment to protecting our homes, families, and neighbors. Let’s lead by example and inspire others to prioritize fire safety in their own lives.
W ishing you all a happy 4th of July and a safe and enjoyable Summer.
