UPDATE FROM YOUR VP: YOUR POLO HOA CONTINUES TO MAKE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BETTER AND SAFER. You may have noticed the new "STOP" stenciling on the major arteries within the neighborhood (and there are more to come). This is to ensure motorists know exactly where to stop for the various stop signs and further ensure everyone's safety. We continue to get complaints regarding speeding in our neighborhood and we ask that everyone obey the speed limit and stop signs at all times, day and night. If you are late for something and must speed then do it outside of our neighborhood. We want to continue having a safe and neighborly environment for the many people who walk, run, and bike on our streets. Please get to know your neighbors, drive slowly, and wave. This is our neighborhood and it is everyone's responsibility to make it what we want.

The Time of Your Life: HOW GAP YEARS SHAPE, FORM… AND TRANSFORM

Since the 1960s, Western culture has offered young adults a unique chance for personal development, growth, and self-discovery: the so-called “Gap Year” – a time before or after college to reassess oneself and gain invaluable real-world experience. Here, self-education is intrinsic. Think travel, volunteer work, the study of a foreign language, paid employment, or a dozen other possibilities. They are highly personalized, so your ideal experience may look very different than somebody else’s. This time can also be segmented to include different activities at different stages, which should all promote growth and self-discovery. Approaching a gap year with sure-footed goals gives you a ton of advantages. First, it’s an opportunity to take a break from studying to get recharged. Feeling burnout and a loss of motivation? This may be the perfect step to get clarity and purpose before you jump into a job or delve into full-time courses at a university. You can pursue a passion, like photography or writing, or you may even get inspiration from an experience during your gap year that will push you to pursue an entirely new path. Activities accomplished during this time can give a big boost to a CV/resume, and frequently, you’re earning and saving money towards your higher education costs and future plans. It gets better: you’ll be developing yourself personally, gaining more discipline, increasing self-awareness, and achieving greater independence. Last but certainly not least, you know the cliché: you will broaden your horizons. Think traveling, meeting new people, and exploring the world. It will all open your mind, help you build new skills (like a second language), and give you the chance to figure out what’s important to you. Enticed by possibility? If yes, fantastic, but consider as well potential challenges and disadvantages. Your gap year could cause you to lose your academic momentum – you may find it hard to get back into the swing of student life – studying, taking exams, and writing papers. To avoid losing motivation, know that you’ll have to return to “the real world” eventually and don’t forget that your education is what matters most. 10

The Polo Ne wsle tter // March 2 02 2

Sometimes gap years are expensive. Teaching abroad will probably require a plane ticket, and some gap year programs are costly. Budget accordingly, and get into a new mindset: schedules won’t be planned, like taking classes or the typical 9-5 gig. Possible risks include stress, homesickness, language barriers, dealing with foreign currency, or trying to navigate different public transportation systems. Taking all these factors into account, let’s examine the fine print: the marvelous variety of activities out there. Got an occupational field you’d like to pursue? Think internship or another form of paid work. You can do service or volunteer work at a hospital, clinic, or shelter. Traveling, teaching abroad, or becoming an au pair are also options. An au pair is a helper from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family. Typically, au pairs are keen on learning the local language, they take on a share of childcare, do some housework, and receive a monetary allowance for personal use. Organized Gap Year Programs are often attractive. Featuring eligibility requirements and (sometimes) expenses, it pays to investigate before committing. Among them: The well-renowned Peace Corps. Here, volunteers are American citizens, typically with a college degree, who work abroad for a period of two years after three months of training. Another well-known gap year program is AmeriCorps – similar to Peace Corps, but confined to the United States. Here, students opt for teambased projects in service-oriented programs in specific communities to tackle issues like poverty and unemployment. Participants in the novel Seamester travel by boat for three months and learn to scuba dive and sail while visiting multiple countries along their route. TEFL, the Teaching English as a Foreign Language course, awards students a certificate and qualifies them to teach English abroad. The Centro MundoLengua of Sevilla, Spain, focuses on volunteering, Spanish language immersion, and cultural exploration of Spain and surrounding countries like Portugal and Morocco. In addition, Projects Abroad offers numerous service and educational opportunities in countries

throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Winterline Global Education provides a nine-month, 10-country opportunity with gap-year developmental education in more than 100 skills. You can also research opportunities on The Gap Year Association website – they list a wide range of options, including experiences with a focus on ecology, animal welfare and conservation, language studies, coding, cultural immersion, and other topics. And don’t forget Go Overseas – they provide testimonials and extensive resources to help you determine if taking a gap year is a good fit for your life circumstances, as well as how to plan, budget, and make the most out of your year of newfound freedom. If you are hesitant about taking a gap year because of COVID-19, you can always take free online courses, participate in virtual field trips, or study a foreign language. Far from a time of inaction, a gap year is a time to explore new roads, feel refreshed, and enjoy a different type of learning experience. Studies show that gap year participation leads to increased GPAs, graduation rates, and job satisfaction. Yet, it is not for everyone! Carefully consider the pros and cons, and if you opt for that year off, go into it with clear objectives. This year is not something to go into haphazardly, so ask yourself what you hope to gain, and, arguably most important, know that it’s not a gap of action. This decision is a year on, not a year off. At its core, the gap year is really a foundation for your future, giving you new resources, formidable strengths, and a widened perspective on life. Afterwards, you’ll face your tomorrow – be it college, graduate school, work, or just the wonder of life – with greater maturity, more knowledge, and remarkable equanimity. Golf Reminders BE SAFE! FRIENDLY REMINDERS FROM POLO HOA Please remember that when walking or jogging through the neighborhood you should be facing (walking into) traffic. This allows you to see oncoming vehicles and allows you to get your pets out of the way as well. If you are on a bicycle (or moving vehicle) you should be going in the same direction as the traffic.

GOLF CARTS General Federal Law for Golf Carts: Under current NHTSA interpretations and regulations, so long as golf cars and other similar vehicles are incapable of exceeding 20 miles per hour, they are subject to only state and local requirements regarding safety equipment. However, if these vehicles are originally manufactured so that they can go faster than 20 miles per hour, they are treated as motor vehicles under Federal law. The standard requires low-speed vehicles to be equipped with headlamps, stop lamps, turn signal lamps, tail lamps, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, windshields, seat belts, and vehicle identification numbers.

EXCEPTION: If the driver is 15 and holds a permit, he/she may operate the golf cart alone. Golf carts may only operate on streets with posted speed limits of 35 MPH and under. This does not prohibit golf carts or lowspeed motor vehicles from crossing any road or street at properly marked crossings.

REQUIRED GOLF CART EQUIPMENT All golf carts must have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints and must weigh less than 1,300 lbs and not top speeds of 20mph.
