FROM THE NEELY BOARD D e a r Fa r mer s , A few brief notes and updates concerning projects going on around the farm. Installation of the new swim team dive blocks are underway ahead of the 2022 season. A big thank you to Jim Sacca for identifying and advocating the need and preparing options, the careful consideration of the board regarding the viable options, and AMG to execute a project with an accelerated and critical timeline. In addition to a 6 and 0 season we sincerely look forward to regular swim meets as an important community fellowship activity. The painting of the clubhouse exterior trim is nearly complete and included quite a bit of wood replacement in the process. The painting and the parking lot pavement sealing are part of an ongoing asset maintenance and repair process.

The tennis courts, especially around courts 2 and 6, are identified as needing attention. The board is aware of the issues and is developing a remediation and repair plan. One project the board has considered the past few years is upgrading of the street signposts. The current posts are provided by the city and are very utilitarian. The upgraded signposts would more nearly match the mailbox post design with a fluted base and smooth vertical pole. Similar upgrades are already complete in comparable neighborhoods. Recall that the neighborhood amenity signage was upgraded just a few years ago, and in my view, was long overdue. The question is if a similar upgrade to the street signs is a preferred use of capital? I value your position and welcome feedback regarding the matter.

A licensed wildlife rehabilitator, her interest in birds was sparked while feeding orphaned baby birds as a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator, and in 2018, she became the custodian for Georgia Audubon’s first education ambassadors, two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds injured in window collisions. Melanie is a former high school English teacher and holds a Master of Arts for Teachers degree from Agnes Scott College. She is a certified Master Naturalist and serves on the board of the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia and the advisory council for K-12 Education at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Passionate about wildlife and nature, she documents her wildlife adventures and musings about nature on her blog and social media page, My Eco-centric Life. She is the mother of two college students and three rescue cats.

GREETINGS NEELY RESIDENTS!

he 2022 pool season is almost here. We are therefore happy to announce that the official scheduled date of opening will be this Saturday, May 7th. At this time, the Board has lifted those Covid-19 related restrictions that have limited some levels of use and access. We will be returning to “business as usual” with regard to the pool in that capacity. We do ask that you continue to practice good health and safety measures at all times. However, we do need to reach out to everyone with regards to recent local and national shortages of lifeguards, which may have an impact on some aspects of this year’s operations. Our pool has for many years had a “Swim At Your Own Risk” option that has allowed the pool to operate before and after the hours covered by attendants and lifeguards. Regrettably, the recent concerns presented by our pool management company indicate that while they continue to recruit, hire and train; excess lifeguards and double and triple staffing may be limited at best this season. This is an issue facing the entire profession, as shortages of lifeguards have become not only a local, but national issue. If you know of anyone who is interested in working as a lifeguard this summer at the Neely Farm Pool, you may certainly contact Sears Pool Management. As such, we wish to direct you to the pool rules, which can be found on the website and through this link Pool Rules as there will be three areas that will likely be impacted by this shortage, and that we as a Board and community may need your help in. We ask that you familiarize yourself with the rules so that we can work to ensure the safest and most enjoyable environment possible. You will see that we have also attached below the projected 2022 pool schedule so that you may see some of the changes we have made with regards to operating hours and the staffing levels that will correspond. We also have included in that schedule the Mallards Swim Team practice and meet times, so you may plan your visits to the pool accordingly. This calendar is through June 26th, and is of course subject to change. 1. You as members of Neely Farm are at all times responsible for the actions of yourselves, your family, and your guests. Please be aware of pool operations and scheduling as you allow your younger children to visit the pool. Please always supervise your non-swimming children directly. We ask that you always be present at the pool water with them, regardless of their age, and that you utilize proper floatation devices for their safety.

Destination Spotlight: Antarctica! By Jeanne Derderian, Luxury Travel Advisor

ntarctica is a dream destination for countless adventurers. The first documented landing on Antarctica did not occur until 1895. Today, there are a number of ways to see the White Continent. How you go depends on your travel style. Most people visit Antarctica by ship. For the more adventurous traveler that has a strong focus on nature, I usually recommend an expedition ship. Expedition ships have simple accommodations and do not have fancy amenities; but these ships offer plenty of opportunities for exploration in zodiacs and kayaks, with more chances to see wildlife. Moreover, since the expedition ships carry fewer passengers than other ships (usually under 200), you are able to spend more time on land in Antarctica. Depending upon when you go and which expedition company we put you on, you may even be able to sleep in a tent one night on Antarctica! If you prefer a more luxurious experience, there are ships with lavish suites, gourmet food, and great amenities. However, these cruises usually carry more passengers than the expedition ones.

An important thing to note is that ships with more than 500 passengers are not allowed to make landings on the continent, and no more than 100 people are allowed on land at a time. So the smaller the ship, the less time you might spend waiting for your chance to step foot on the icy terrain.

in life, you might not be happy on an expedition ship even if you are surrounded by towering ice and frolicking penguins you’ve been longing to see. If your dream is to be roughing it out in the elements, you might feel cramped on a nonexpedition cruise. That’s where having a trusted travel advisor is so valuable.

A land based trip is truly a once in a life time way to experience Antarctica and is quite costly. Antarctica is a bucket list destination and has been very popular in an era of travel restrictions, so it’s important to pick the type of trip that best suits you. If you’re used to the finer things

Thomasville Rose Garden is located near Cherokee Lake Park on 5 acres of land…a little bit of a drive from Atlanta. The garden has over 1500 rose bushes ranging from different colors and types of roses all of which are labeled along the path. And now is the perfect time to go since all the roses

Along the property are dozens of ponds, waterfalls, and bridges surrounded by beautiful trees and ferns to add even more beauty to the gardens. Located on Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta Botanical Gardens are a must-see site. The property consists of 30 acres of garden from a fun-filled Children’s Garden, an elegant Canopy Walk, and the Atlanta-based Skyline Garden.
