nother month of winter has passed and I’m just about ready for spring to arrive. My kids were thrilled with the dusting of snow we received, and I was just as pleased that we were spared another “snowmageddon”. We are making progress on a number of projects around the farm. Maintenance, upkeep, and the occasional upgrade are pretty much the same as with your own home. There always seems to be a deck to be repaired, trim to be repaired and painted, old furniture to be replaced, and plantings that are 30+ years old and just giving out. Adding to the challenge is that costs are rising at an ever increasing rate. Deferring these items is rarely a good idea as the effects and costs to repair increase with time. For those old enough to remember the Fram oil filter commercial,

“pay me now, or pay me later”. Regardless, the Board continues to make every effort to make prudent and responsible decisions. This last month there was some discussion on social media regarding security incidents. Social media can be a great tool to communicate with neighbors; however, social media administration happens outside of Board operations. While some on the Board may be aware of social media post the Board does not actively monitor social media. If there is an incident that you would like to ensure the Board or NWC is made aware of, please reach out directly using either board@neelyfarm.net or neighborhoodwatch@neelyfarm.net.

ate fall 2019 the NF HOA approved the investment in license plate reader (LPR) cameras. The contract was signed in early 2020 and installation occurred in March. After multiple events over the years of criminal trespassing, theft from cars, stolen vehicles and attempted burglaries, neighborhood security was ranked high as a concern by Neely Farm residents. We now have a total of three Flock cameras in Neely Farm. There is one camera at the entrance, one at the River Park and one capturing license plates as they exit the neighborhood. All three cameras are solar powered. They capture still images of license plates. The images are stored for only 30 days. The purpose of the LPR camera system is a tool to aid the police in the investigation of a crime. The camera system is NOT actively monitored at ANY time. It is NOT intended for security purposes and should NOT be relied on as a single source of surveillance in our community. Access to Flock camera images is primarily for the police. If you are the victim of a crime and think Flock can help with the police investigation, please let them know that your neighborhood has three Flock cameras. You should notify the Neely Farm HOA so that they may coordinate with the police if necessary. Any other access to this information must be pursuant to a subpoena or a court order. As always, if you see something, say something. ALWAYS call the police if there is threat to person or property. Get Involved! The Neighborhood Watch Committee is seeking new homeowner volunteers. Neely Farm HOA installed our three Flock cameras in spring 2020. Two are located at the entrance and exit to the neighborhood and a third is at the River Park. To better assist the police with expedited investigation, the Neely Farm HOA is helping to collect license plate numbers of homeowner vehicles. Of course, participation is voluntary. If we can identify in Flock the vehicles that are resident owned and therefore “safe”, we can help the police quickly identify license plates that don’t belong. This can be very helpful if a crime is committed and critical if the investigation is urgent.

*In 2020, an LPR camera located in Gwinnett County helped police apprehend a man wanted for murder. Police were alerted that a vehicle driven by the suspect had just passed through a particular intersection and they were able to locate and arrest the suspect. *In Sandy Springs, an LPR camera assisted police in capturing an alleged porch pirate who was later connected to hundreds of cases of mail fraud across the country. *GCPD reports that Peachtree Corners Flock cameras and other LPR cameras installed by the Gateway85 Community Improvement District have led to $1.6 million in recovered property, have facilitated numerous arrests and assisted with many investigations. *GCPD officers on patrol received a Flock alert for a wanted person driving near Jimmy Carter Blvd and Buford Hwy heading into the City of Peachtree Corners. Officers located the vehicle pulling into the Fields Apartment Complex and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle fled further into the complex, but officers were able to locate the driver and arrest her on the outstanding warrant along with additional charges. *GCPD officers on patrol received a Flock alert for a wanted person driving near Jimmy Carter Blvd and PIB. Officers easily located the vehicle, pulled it over and arrested the driver on multiple outstanding warrants. The driver had warrants out of Douglas County, Henry County, Forsyth County and Cobb County for Felony Theft. “These cameras have become an extremely valuable resource for the police department when it comes to solving crime,” said Corporal Collin Flynn, of GCPD’s Public Information Office. “Officers are able to use the footage from these cameras to identify vehicles immediately after a crime occurs. This technology has been instrumental in solving a multitude of crimes in Gwinnett County and has helped officers recover many stolen vehicles.”

r. Tim Smalley, Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus, University of Georgia, has cultivated his horticultural expertise as a student gardener at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, as a tree farmer at Disney World, as the assistant director of the Cornell University Botanical Garden and as an extension scientist for the Middle Tennessee Nursery Industry.

At UGA, Dr. Smalley taught Nursery Management, Landscape Horticulture, Woody Plant Identification and lead the Grand Tour Study Abroad course. In conjunction with Dr. Smalley’s tour company, Paradise Found Garden Tours, he has led over 40 European Garden Tours. Dr. Smalley will discuss his project to document the Historically Significant Trees of Georgia. A historically significant tree is one associated with a historical site or one which has “witnessed” a historical event. Included in his discussion are trees with historical and horticulturally significance on public and private land, and unique, outstanding, specimens for the locale. GCMGA meets on the third Monday at The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. Summer is just around the corner…and so is summer swim team!! ew to the neighborhood? Neely Farm is home to the Mighty Mallards, the Neely Mallards Swim Team. All swimmers from preschool to high school are welcome. Maybe your children can’t swim yet? Consider the Mighty Ducklings! Our experienced coaches would love to teach your little “duckling” how to swim! Their “season” will include learning how to swim, having fun with the coaches and showcasing their new skills at one of our swim meets.

This season’s Swim Team Open House will be held at the Clubhouse March 20th from 2-4pm, where you’ll also have the opportunity to meet the coaches. We are thrilled to introduce our new Head Coach to you, Mia Hahn! Mia is currently the coach of the swim team at Norcross High School where she also teaches Algebra and Geometry. Mia grew up in South Carolina where she was named the State Swimmer of the Year in high school and was also the team captain and MVP for her high school team (and an AP Scholar with distinction in the classroom!). She went on to swim for Pomona-Pitzer in college in California where she set the school record in the 200 backstroke. She graduated from Pomona College in 2016 and came to Norcross High School in 2021. In addition to coaching at Norcross High School, she was previously the head coach for two summer league teams in South Carolina. Our season will officially start with the first practice on Monday, May 2nd and end June 30th. The first of five swim meets will be held Thursday, June 2nd. We expect a return to a normal season this year where we can have a team kick off breakfast, dinners, Fun Fridays, Distance Day and will culminate with the End of Season Team Banquet. Join the Mighty Mallards for great exercise, a fun way to meet new friends and connect with old friends, all with a dose of neighborly competition!!
