OPEN JOURNAL 201 –220
The purpose of this Journal is to help you process what God is doing in your life while on this trip. I hope and pray that as you take
time to look and read through this journal over the next eight days, that it proves to be fruitful for you in times of prayer and discussion with your fellow missionaries. Each day this week has a particular theme to reflect upon as we progress. The challenge is for you to take time, every day, and spend a few minutes reflecting. When we take time to write down what God is doing and where He is challenging us, it helps to make our experience more concrete. God has an INCREDIBLE plan for you this week!
For those who love, nothing is too difficult,
especially when it is done for the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
St Ignatius

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them,“Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. People do not put new wine into old wineskins. At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the prince of demons.” Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom, and curing every disease and illness. Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep. Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave. As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you. Whoever will not receive you or listen to your wordsC go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet. Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Will you let my life be grown; in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind, and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare, Should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer, in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see, if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free, and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean, in you and you in me? Will you love the ‘you’ you hide, if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside, and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found, to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound, in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true, when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you, and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.
WHEN YOU CAME TO THE SEASHORE Tú has venido a la orilla, no has buscado ni a sabios ni a ricos; tan sólo quieres que yo te siga. Señor, me has mirado a los ojos, sonriendo has dicho mi nombre, en la arena he dejado mi barca, junto a ti buscaré otro mar.
WHEN YOU COME TO THE SEASHORE (ENG) Lord, you have come to the seashore, neither searching for the rich nor the wise, desiring only that I should follow. O, Lord, with your eyes set upon me, gently smiling, you have spoken my name; all I longed for I have found by the water, at your side, I will seek other shores. Lord, see my goods, my possessions; in my boat you find no power, no wealth.
Will you accept, then, my nets and labor? Lord, take my hands and direct them. Help me spend myself in seeking the lost, returning love for the love you gave me. Lord, as I drift on the waters, be the resting place of my restless heart, my life’s companion, my friend and refuge.

SAINT JOSEPH – PATRON SAINT OF WORKERS FEAST DAY: March 10 (Joseph the Husband of Mary) or May 1 (Joseph the Worker) PRAYERS: Saint Joseph, patron of the universal Church, watch over the Church as carefully as you watched over Jesus, help protect it and guide it as you did with your adopted son. Amen Seven joys and seven sorrows of Saint Joseph; these include prayers for daily protection, vocation, happy marriage, happy death, and hopeless cases. NOVENA TO SAINT JOSEPH:
Saint Joseph, you are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. You know that I have confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary, I come to you as an example for holiness, for you are especially close with God. Therefore, I humbly commend myself, with all who are dear to me and all that belong to me, to your intercession. I beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon me during life and to assist me at the hour of my death. Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, pray for me to have a pure, humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore: (Mention your request) Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers on my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. SAINT THERESE OF LISIEUX – PATRON SAINT OF MISSIONS (LITTLE FLOWER) Feast day – October 1 PRAYERS:

O Little Flower of Jesus, ask God to grant the favorsI now place with confidence in your hands ( mention your special prayer request here ) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I may imitate your “Little Way” each day. Amen NOVENA:
Dearest Saint Therese of Lisieux, you said that you would spend your time in heaven doing good on earth. Your trust in God was complete. Pray that He may increase my trust in His goodness and mercy as I ask for the following petitions… (State your intentions) Pray for me that I, like you, may have great and innocent confidence in the loving promises of our God. Pray that I may live my life in union with God’s plan for me, and one day see the Face of God whom you loved so deeply. Saint Therese, you were faithful to God even unto the moment of your death. Pray for me that I may be faithful to our loving God. May my life bring peace and love to the world through faithful endurance in love for God our savior. 194 |

My Story
Hi, my name is Alexis, but everyone calls me Alex. I love my home at Hogar Belen Managua because I have lots of friends. The first thing I do in the morning is run around and get hugs and kisses from all my friends and my “mamas” (the caregivers). My favorite time of day is meal time…any meal, because I love to eat! I love it so much I sometimes take some from my friends’ plates if they’re not looking! But that gets me into trouble sometimes. I always pray before eating because I like to pray. I love to throw things, not at people… just straight up in the air. Balls, toys, stuffed animals, and guess what?
fast and learning many things from my teachers. This is a very good place to learn and to play. Mustard Seed Communities at Hogar Belen Managua is fun! See you soon! Alex
My Background
Alex came to Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua in 2001. Alex was born with Down Syndrome. Not much is known about his background or family other than that Alex came from an area of extreme poverty and was abandoned in a neighborhood. He was found by a family and was then taken to the Nicaraguan authorities because the family had no resources to help Alex. He was then brought to Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua by Mi Familia, the government agency.

Hi, my name is Antony. I am pretty small for my age, but I make up for my size with a big smile! Since arriving at Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua, I have learned how to walk on my own. I was a little nervous about it at first, but I am doing much better now! I like to take it slow because I can’t see very well and I want to be sure that I know what is in front of me. I’m scared of many things — especially the swing set, so I stay away from that. I like to just push things around on the sidewalk. That’s what makes me the happiest. My name is Elvira and everyone tells me that I have the BEST smile ever! It doesn’t take much to make me happy; I smile and laugh all the time. I really like it when people sit and talk with me. I may be quiet, but my grin says it all! Sometimes I even try to flirt a little bit with my friend Anthony, but he just runs away from me! I am unable to stand on my own, but I get around by scooting across the floor. When I hear music, I can’t help but dance! I love to be held and rocked. Being wrapped up in someone’s arms makes me feel loved and special. At Hogar Belen Managua I spend time working on many therapies to help me. I receive physical therapy to keep the muscles in my legs flexible.

She suffers from cerebral palsy. Elvira receives constant physical therapy to help with her muscle development. She has undergone surgery twice while at MSC, both times to straighten her legs. She also underwent therapy to help her vision. Now, as a result of physical therapy and care, Elvira has some mobility, and can “scoot” fairly well when not in her wheel chair.

My friend Elvira and I love to be pushed really fast! After that excitement, I usually relax with the radio next to my chair, listening to some tunes. At Hogar Belen Managua, I receive physical therapy to give my muscles exercise. My therapist uses music in my therapy and also toys that make sounds. Sounds and music help me learn. Thanks! Gabriel

I love to sing along! OK, I can’t really sing but I do make sounds along with the beat of the music. Did I mention…I really love music? My caregivers play music for me a lot and my favorite song is “La Vaca Lola,” which means “The Cow Lola” in English! It’s a silly song. If you really want to get my attention, sing my name in a song and I will probably respond with my widest grin. Jose Manuel came to Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua in April of 2006. Unfortunately, his story is one of abuse, neglect, drug abuse and physical abuse. Jose Manuel is believed to have been born a normal happy child. However, he was deprived of oxygen as an infant. This has caused him to have many physical problems including some that may have led to his small size and mental capacity. He is very happy Hogar Belen Managua and is learning, growing and getting the medical attention he needs.
I can understand a few things, like “close your eyes.” I love it when people sing to me–it REALLY makes me smile! I came to Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua in July of 2008 and I was in pretty bad shape but the care I received here and the love that everyone shares has made me a much happier and healthy chico. I especially enjoy it when missionary’s come to play with me or just sit and talk to me. I may not be able to understand English, but I can understand love and it makes me smile. I like to sit under the water hose and play in the mud. It’s so much fun, I can’t figure out why she doesn’t want me to do it... I don’t mind changing clothes all the time. I generally have two moods good moods and bad moods and usually nothing in between. When I’m in a bad mood I like to just swing in the hammock and listen to music; it relaxes me. When I’m in a good mood, I have a great smile and like to laugh. Talk to you soon! Special K

My Story
Hi there! My name is Delores Maria, but everyone calls me Lola! I arrived here at Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua with my brother Pablo in February 2012. At first I was a little shy. I really wasn’t sure about my surroundings and all my new friends. But I used my best manners and sat quietly with my hands in my lap. I wanted to make a good impression! Now, I’ve adjusted and I know that this is a great home. I’ve started to come out of my shell. I love to swing and listen while the caregivers sing to us! I also like to be held. When I first came to Mustard Seed Communities, I did not know how to sit up on my own. I have been working hard at it, and now I can sit up all by myself! I have also grown a lot since I’ve been here. Maybe it’s because I like to eat so much. Like some of my friends, I really enjoy listening to music and dancing to the beat. Some people say I move my legs like a frog! All I know is that I have a lot of fun with everyone who spends time with me. Thank you for reading my story, Maria Alicia

It is so much fun especially when the care givers play games with the mirror and let me play dress up and wear pretty clothes. I also love to smile. I am so excited because I have
