News You Can Use Fitness Center Hijinks? Recently, we have had a number of teens in the Fitness Center who are not using equipment properly and/or being disruptive to others in the building. Please remind your teens that they can not use the Fitness Center unsupervised if they are under the age of 16. Also remind older teens that they need to take care with the equipment and be considerate of their volume, especially during office hours, as our office shares a wall with the Fitness Center. Those who can not follow the guidelines for Fitness Center use may be asked to leave and/or be prevented from future use of the space. Keep in mind that new video cameras are being installed.

Board report

Draft Highlights of the February Board Meeting The complete Board meeting minutes are online at Mybrickshire.com. Review of Pool Survey The results of the survey sent to the owners was reviewed. The survey revealed that 502 owners (each from a different household) took the survey, with 76% in favor of a new pool/pool house and 24% opposed. MOTION: Assessor moved to approve the expense up to $40,000 for the architect to begin work on drawings and estimates for a new pool and pool house. Second by Reed. Passed unanimousl

Virtual and/or Recorded Meeting Options The Board discussed options for making Board meetings available online or streaming. There was no consensus on the best options, but it was agreed the current Association website is not able to properly post or protect recorded meetings. It was agreed that further discussion into a policy for making meetings available online in some form or fashion is warranted, but will be deferred until the new website is launched and the Board is able to consider options within the website’s capabilities. Board members Brown and Reed are already working on new web hosting options.

New Treadmill for Fitness Center The Board moved to approve the purchase of a new treadmill from FitnessSmith for a total of $4619.06, to be paid from Replacement Reserves. Seconded by Brown and passed unanimously.

The Brickshire and Brickshire Golf Logos The existing HOA and Golf logo is based on a rendering of the Golf Club and we do not have clear artwork to reproduce. By consensus the Board agreed to have Buildings and Grounds review logos produced by a professional graphic designer and make recommendations to the Board. Management will work on finding a designer.

Finance Committee Report Brian Keena, Chair Richard Mapel Vice Chair

J

Hi Brickshire residents– ust a reminder that the Finance Committee is a volunteer group appointed by the Board of Directors. We meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the clubhouse and these meetings are open to all Brickshire residents. We encourage you to join us at these monthly meetings where you can hear about some of our current financial related topics, ask questions, or voice your opinion on any Brickshire finance related topic that you are interested in. The Brickshire HOA finished 2021 in very solid financial shape. We brought in Amenity Fee income of $416,793 in 2021 and finished the year with the Amenity Fee reserve at $856,464. While we do expect the Amenity Fee income to slow somewhat in 2022, it is still budgeted to make a significant positive impact to our overall income total.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Board, on behalf for the community, thanks Marty Lukes for his many years of service as Architectural Review Board chair.

Reports

Volunteers comprise these committees and work to make our community the best it can be. Consider contributing your time to a worthy cause — your community. There are usually vacancies –- check with the Association Office for more information.

Architectural Review Board Report Marty Lukes, Chair As many of you know, this will be my last newsletter article. I have turned

over the ARB chairmanship to the able hands of Tim Sutor, a long-time member of the board. I will continue on the board to help Tim with the challenging task of managing the building in Brickshire and the modifications residents make to their property. The ARB met regularly in December, January and February. Meetings have been held in the Owner’s Clubhouse. During that period, 16 new home applications were acted upon. At present, there are 86 homes in the process of being built by 21 different builders. Issues with the supply chain have slowed down some of the construction with homes sitting idle for weeks or even months. Windows have been a significant problem. This is the particular problem with the home being built on Kings Pond Dr; the window supplier for this builder is constantly changing the promised delivery. This situation is frustrating to the builder and to the ARB. The shortage of truck drivers has made for difficulty emptying dumpsters and removing clearing materials (logs). We do expect a slowdown in applications next year but only time will tell. Brickshire and New Kent county are still popular with new home buyers. We presently have 206 undeveloped lots in the neighborhoods. Bel Green is completely built and the Sanctuary has only one undeveloped lot. The Paddock has 4 lots yet to be built on. During that period, we continued to review resident applications. The

4

majority are for fences and sheds and tree removals. For new residents, please review the covenants and design standards. There are many projects which require an application to the ARB. Projects, such as playset and fence installation, that get installed without ARB approval are subject to a covenant violation and fine. If you are unsure of the need for an application, check with the office or email “brickshirearb@gmail.com.” Thank you for allowing me to serve the community. Though there have been challenging times, it has given me great pleasure. Marty

Building and Grounds Committee Co-Chair: Judy Schwartz and Marianne Baillie Buildings and Grounds welcomed 2 new members this year; Bill Keswick and John Archer, giving us a full committee. We still have room for an alternate. We selected new chairs for the tables and bar at the owners’ club house. The Board has approved and the order has been placed. Funding has been approved and we continue to look for replacements for the 4 club chairs. We recommended Max PlayFit’s proposal to the Board for additional playground swings. This is the company that provided the last addition to the equipment in the playground. The current swing set will be removed and replaced with 3 sections of 2 swings each, to include 4 belt swings, one toddler swing and one handicap accessible swing. This has been approved and the order placed.

After a year plus of research and reviewing bids, we recommended to the Board that they approve new LED streetlights from Van Meter to be installed by Obier Electric. This was approved and the order placed. In the exercise room, one treadmill has been repaired and a new treadmill has been ordered to replace the other treadmill that is not working. The television has been repaired. B & G members are working with the HOA to assess needed repairs to the walking paths. This is an ongoing issue as tree roots and weather continue to cause damage. If you notice an issue with any of the amenities, please report it to the HOA office at 804-966-1599

Covenants Committee George Knight, Acting Chair Spring is around the corner and it’s time to spruce up the yard! It seems like a good time for the committee to be focusing on mailboxes and yard maintenance. If you have a problem lawn and little time to spare working on it, there are many vendors to get help from including mulching, seeding, fertilizing and even mowing. Costs will vary but generally, you can get a good deal and beautiful lawn! Mailboxes will be inspected legible numbers and condition. Some may need painting or straightening for leaning mailboxes. The office will provide replacement numbers. Just call.

GOLF CLUB OUTLOOK FOR 2022 By Pro Steve Hippeard, Head Golf Professional, Class A-1 PGA Membe r

This just in: Five other Golf Professionals and I are starting a Men’s home and away league with their respective clubs and response has been overwhelming. If you want to participate in this, call me at 804-966-7666 ext 2. I have also booked a Kids US Tour Event to be held on June 11th. I expect over 75 Juniors ages 5-16 to play that day. Volunteers would be welcome, especially since our green to tee distance is so great. This event preludes events where winners will be invited to Regional and then a National finale which will be held later in the year at Pinehurst. Over the winter, I saw only good things at Brickshire. Play on good days brought both members and the public i.e. 155 golfers on Monday February 21 and we are averaging 50-55 golfers per day in February. Outings are booking, outside groups have monthly dates, our third party partners are on fire with bookings and we will be hosting The Men’s Capital Amateur as well as a LPGA Amateur Golf Association event. I also have agreed to a Tuesday evening league(SPARKS) which will bring in outside play. I am currently working on hosting a Hurricane Junior Tour event and currently am in talks. With that, the Ambitious season of Golf Promotion for 2022 continues with dates:

Ї The Beginner Lady group continues to form

with a total of 30 as of March 1. Groups will meet beginning Tuesday April 12th and continue for five weeks. Two sessions per day 10am and 530pm. Call Pro shop if interested-966-7888.

Ї Juniors will begin on Saturdays in May-watch for sign up and more details as staff is added to the Pro Shop Ї Wine and Nine mixed scrambles proposed for 1st and 3rd Thursdays starting in May. Mixed scrambles for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day will be held with 8am shotguns on the corresponding Mondays. Ї The Brickshire Cup will be revived and featured for Men and Women Members and will be held over the summer-TBA Ї The Men’s Club Championship will be held October 1 and will feature both net and gross competitions-must have a VSGA Handicap. Lessons are by appointment only due to staffing challenges—Adults-$60 for 40 minutes and Juniors 17 and under $40 for 40 minutes Lastly, A member information center has been set up in the Pro shopAll are welcome to post golf happenings/events. RON STIERS, NEW KENT COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VDOT just announced it will begin widening Courthouse Road starting from Rt 64 ending at Rt 60. The expectation is that the project will complete in June.

C

hurchill Downs Inc. has reached an agreement to purchase “substantially all” of the assets owned by Peninsula Pacific Entertainment (PPE), including Colonial Downs and it’s off-track betting network. The transaction, which also includes casinos in upstate New York and in Iowa, will cost $2.45 billion and is expected to close by the end of 2022. Colonial Downs races were approved for 27 dates in 2022, running from July 11 through September 7. The track’s purses, which are heavily subsidized by casino operations, are set to average $600,000 a day. John Marshall, General Manager of Colonial Downs, stated there will be no changes in the operations of Colonial Downs; it will business as usual. The County will continue to receive its share of the proceeds which is currently averaging $120,000 per week for the citizens of New Kent County. Hopefully, we’ll have additional days of horse racing and larger purses in the future.

In other news: The Kilted Creamery will specialize in homemade premium ice cream and nondairy products so everyone can enjoy a sweet treat. Located Next to Rick’s Deli at the crossroads of North Courthouse and New Kent Highway, the transition to begin refining the space has begun! Governor Youngkin announced that AutoZone, Inc., that nation’s leading auto parts retailer and distributor of automotive replacement parts and accessories, will invest $185.2 million to establish a new warehouse and distribution center in New Kent County. The company will construct an 800,000-square-foot distribution center and direct import facility on Hwy 106, near Love’s Travel Center. The facility will serve as it’s East Coast distribution operation, creating 352 new jobs. Groundbreaking should commence in May and open for business in the Spring of 2025. Garden Gab by Judy Schwartz

Is It Really Spring?

O

h! the joy of spring! The crocuses and daffodils bloom… and then it snows, freezes, flurries or sleets, and then it is 75 degrees and sunny. Welcome to springtime in Virginia. Do not be taken in by false spring. Wait until mid-April to plant those tender annuals or you will be running out to cover them when we get a late frost. Typically, in Providence Forge, the last frost date is between April 11th and 20th. Just watch the weather and wait until you don’t see the risk of frost. By now you should have pruned your roses and butterfly bushes back, but hopefully have not disturbed a lot of soil yet, as our bees and other helpful insects have wintered over under those leaves and pine needles on top of your garden. Give them until frost is past before removing their winter protection. Then feel free to clean up and mulch. I also tend to leave a few dandelions until early May so the bees have some early pollen. Don’t prune your spring bloomers or you will not have any flowers until next year. Wait until after they flower, then prune away. As your garden starts its spring growth spurt, be sure and add deer protection or you may just have a few nubs instead of plants. Especially if you plant deer candy…like tulips or day lilies. Or rabbit candy like crocuses and pansies. I alternate different sprays at least every 2 weeks in spring as the deer will eat everything in sight. And spray after any heavy rain too.

Want to learn more about gardening here in Brickshire? Garden Gab is open to everyone in the community. We meet the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1 PM at the owners’ club house. And we love to talk about what grows well here and what works in our gardens. Bring your questions too. We welcome new gardeners as well as Master Gardeners! And we will be having our ANNUAL PLANT SALE ON MAY 7TH FROM 9 AM TO 3 PM IN FRONT OF THE GOLF CLUB HOUSE. We ask everyone who is making changes in their gardens, either removing plants and shrubs or splitting overgrown plants, to donate them to our sale. Several members are collecting plants through the spring and you can call and drop things off. We also have pots, if you need them. You can call Ruth at 804-966-2562, Patty at 703-338-7894 or Elizabeth at 703-220-5074. All proceeds are used for plantings at the golf club house gardens, the Grille herb garden, and the barrels and hanging plants there. We add more to the gardens every spring and fall, working to make them attractive. Is there a gardening topic you want to read about in this column? Send your topic to grammythegardener@gmail.com.
