Frank Perryman Shares Thoughts on Titanium Industry’s ‘State of the Union’ as it Emerges from Fog of Covid-19 (Editor’s note: As the world continues to emerge from the extended “fog” Covid-19, we invited Frank L. Perryman, the president of the International Titanium Association’s executive board, to share his insights and observations on the titanium’s industry’s “state of the union.” He responded in the question-and-answer format that follows.) What is your assessment of overall titanium industry business conditions as we move into a post-Covid-19 period? How much has the industry been damaged by the Covid-19 lockdown, and what will it take to recover? Managing through the Covid-19 pandemic was very challenging for virtually all businesses across the world. Like all industries, the titanium industry was certainly impacted. Depending upon the specific sector, companies in the titanium industry have experienced anywhere from 30 to 70 percent and even higher reductions in business. But it didn’t come to a complete stop. There is still a strong heartbeat. We are very fortunate that the key end market OEM’s kept a reduced level of volume moving through which allowed all participants to adjust to new lower levels. The titanium market is a very big wheel that’s not so easy to slow down. It is also a big wheel that’s difficult to get fully turning again. This will take time, but we will return. I believe our industry is strong and resilient. I am confident that we will recover and ultimately be better than before the pandemic. The ITA executive board will need to 10

continue to provide high-value services and information to our members so they can make the most educated decisions. Business analysts and industry consultants are weighing in on the state of “vulnerable” global supply chains, in the wake of Covid-19. What’s your assessment on the titanium industry’s supply chain, especially when it comes to doing business in the commercial aerospace sector? Show me an industry and supply chain that was not in a vulnerable state. This was a gut punch to everyone. Those companies that were 100-percent commercial aerospace were affected more than those with a diversification in markets. Aerospace will be coming back. This was a true test of supply chain relationships. In many cases the pandemic provided the opportunity to work closer with your supply chain to fully understand what everyone is faced with and develop solutions to best fit the conditions. Control what you can and adapt to the rest.

Emerging from the Fog of Covid-19 (continued)

The titanium market is a very big wheel that’s not so easy to slow down. It is also a big wheel that’s difficult to get fully turning again. This will take time, but we will return. I believe our industry is strong and resilient. – Frank L. Perryman The titanium industry always follows business trends in the aerospace industry. What are the key signals that you’re tracking regarding the titanium industry’s aerospace business forecast for the near term. For example: earlier this year United Airlines announced plans to buy 270 single-aisle aircraft. For decades we have followed the aerospace industry’s delivery rate. With the new reset it is the build rate that is the key indicator. The United Airlines order is a great shot in the arm for the industry, but not an immediate effect. Every order helps, this one helped a lot. Both airframe OEM’s have had more good indicators lately and everything is pointing in the right direction. It just takes time to recover. Today we hear that many industries are having difficulties filling skilled, high-tech, high-end positions. Using this post-Covid-19 period as a new starting point, is the titanium industry planning to launch outreach efforts to attract (and retain) the next generation of business associates?

As an industry we have been working on that for many years through initiatives at the ITA. This would include programs and opportunities such as tuition grants, poster sessions, mentorship opportunities and Women in Titanium. Covid-19 shouldn’t be the reason you’re trying to attract new young talent. As a growing industry we need to always push this effort. As we always have, the ITA will continue to maintain this as an ongoing initiative. Finally, on a more personal note, perhaps you can mention what Perryman has accomplished in recent years to diversify its operations and maintain a leadership position in the titanium industry. Covid-19 has been a major setback to all of us. Companies that have planned and executed properly are in a position to grow out of this difficult period. This is beginning to occur now at Perryman. Our vision and strategic execution is back on track, and we see additional investments coming soon. n (Frank L. Perryman is the president and chief executive officer of Perryman Co. As mentioned above, he also serves at the president of the ITA, with a term that expires in 2022. He graduated from Millikin University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. In 1988 he co-founded Perryman Co. with his father and brother. Founded in 1988, Perryman Co. is headquartered in Houston, PA, with office locations in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London, Zurich, Tokyo and Xi’an, China. Titanium Industry’s ‘DNA’ in Commercial Aerospace Industry Offers Ability to Strengthen Post-Covid-19 Business Alliances By Jeff Staub, Maine Pointe LLC

T

he relationship between the commercial aerospace sector and the titanium industry is well understood with success and pain mutually celebrated and endured. Roughly 80 percent of global production of titanium is consumed by aerospace and defense, with estimates of more than 60 percent of that driven by commercial engines and airframes. Even with the introduction of composite fan and fan cases, nickel alloys moving forward in the high-pressure compressor module, and the slow adoption of additive manufacturing threatening to improve the aggregate buy to fly ratio, titanium demand will be driven in large part by new commercial aircraft and commercial aircraft renewals [engine upgrades and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)] for the foreseeable future. Although domestic air travel has transitioned into recovery after surviving the worst of the pandemic (knock on wood) and the Boeing 737 MAX grounding, there are lingering impacts within the commercial aerospace supply chain that will not be resolved so quickly. The erratic utilization rates of commercial airlines world-wide is still limiting predictability of production rate increases of single and twin-aisle aircraft. As an operations strategy and implementation management consulting firm, focus has shifted across our commercial aerospace clients away from cost transformation and is now being driven by workforce 12

capacity/capability, throughput (including rate-recovery readiness), and supplier risk management especially at the sub-tier levels where visibility is limited. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 supplier business planning processes are frequently not clearly cascaded down to sub-tier suppliers, which create paralyzing ambiguity in the face of theoretical rate increases. This shift in focus for the C-Suite

supply base well into 2022 and likely 2023 even after demand recovery stabilizes and contrary to projections of healthy long-term commercial air traffic. While temporary relief from the relentless drumbeat for cost reduction may be a welcome reprieve for the commercial aerospace supply base, it is also worth noting that OEMs and Tier 1 system providers are not going to be comfortable with being

(executive level managers) signals an increase in supplier power (leverage), in large part due to their own vulnerability, as mitigating threats to schedule and cash flow take precedence over cost reduction for OEMs and Tier 1 system providers. These forces, coupled with shifts in engineering focus (accelerating mobilization for decarbonization, commercialization of space, urban air mobility, etc.), renewed interest in the stability of the defense industry, and a belated international recovery will extend this period of high supplier power in the commercial aerospace

uncomfortable for long. Already, the potential energy is building to swing the pendulum back and recapture demand power (customer leverage). While it will take time to enact, the business case for approaches like developing multiple sources, vertical integration, and value engineering/ technology insertion that traditionally stall due to cost risk are being shaped to reinstate the stability the industry needs for efficiency and effectiveness. In this moment of unique and temporarily increased supplier power, it is the ideal moment to drive increased partnership and align

incentives with OEMs and Tier 1 system providers. Due to increased risk at the OEM level, raw material suppliers that have the agility to respond to rate changes and clearly show their systems, processes and people are ready to deliver quality product on time will weather the storm with OEMs and Tier 1 system providers as key partners. Longterm agreements are already part of the titanium industry’s “DNA” with the current business environment, enabling the ability to revisit and strengthen those relationships well beyond pricing and volume. Increasing proactive communication with customers at a minimum will create a more balanced view and better demand signal for the titanium value chain. In addition, we see five incremental areas of collaboration worth exploring: • Integrated business planning: Lead time and capacity are two of the primary, consistent challenges associated with the titanium supply chain. Coordinated short-, mid-, and long-term forecast accuracy and order planning with mutual accountability can help de-risk capacity/asset strategies and reign in excessive lead times. Building trust and transparency across value chain steps is never easy, but it is the area where waste festers and provides an opportunity for winwin scenarios. • Digital engineering: The sophistication of system simulation has evolved significantly over the last decade and integrating OEM and supplier systems is a viable path to optimize cost, performance, and manufacturability of products virtually. Joint research, development, and new product 14

Letting the voice of the customer provide an external rallying point for integrated working teams and giving engineers a chance to collaborate builds real partnership.

• Automation and productivity: The most common barriers to investing in productivity improvements through automation are uncertainty about adoption success and realizing a reasonable payback period. Risk and benefit sharing of automation and productivity investments can accelerate adoption and provide a mutual incentive to

ensure demand stability and derisk payback periods. Additional opportunities around data sharing and real-time status sharing with a joint “Control Tower” can remove bureaucracy and drive efficient communication.

when delays and reduced rates are managed proactively. Combining contractual data with publicly available subscriptions and data can provide the value chain an opportunity to sense and pivot ahead of unpredictable risk.

• Technology roadmap: Decarbonization, electrification, and additive manufacturing are examples of high-profile initiatives in the commercial aerospace sector, each with its own set of challenges and maturity levels. Getting integrated with the customer to understand, influence, and collaborate on strategic priorities provides an opportunity to be well positioned for future programs. While fuel efficiency has long dictated appetite to progress technologies, we expect industry leaders’ actions to decouple from finite changes in kerosene cost and be more heavily influenced by corporate social responsibility and regulatory drivers.

A portion of the commercial aerospace industrial base was fortunate enough to be insulated from the worst of the pandemic and 737 MAX grounding through end market diversification, but for most it has been a harrowing experience resulting in scars for this generation of middle and senior leadership that will never fully disappear. It is not surprising to find the depth of COVID-19 challenges and resulting financial strain are magnified further upstream into the value chain where manufacturing represents a larger percentage of value-add activities given the fixed nature of asset intensive operations vs. the engineering services provide by OEMs and tier 1 suppliers. Across the entire value chain, few of us will have come through this without questioning our careers, aspirations, and purpose. This collective step back will reshape our operating models (organization, capabilities, processes, tools, and systems) after more than a decade of unrationalized, evolutionary growth coming out of the global financial crisis of 2007/2008. Human nature dictates there will be an appetite and need to recover after an extended period of heightened workload and anxiety. Unfortunately, this is not the home stretch, but a moment to reload and opportunistically reset market position and solidify long-term

• Supply Chain illumination: The aerospace and defense market has been no stranger to consolidation and the COVID-19 and 737 MAX pressure on fragile players will likely result in an extended period of continued merger and acquisition activity. This landscape makes the threat of an OEM or Tier 1 system supplier aggressively pursuing a key sub-tier supplier and squeezing mid-tier suppliers credible. Providing sub-tier visibility may be counter intuitive; however, that risk can and should be mitigated to ensure interconnectivity and single points of failure can be addressed mutually with benefits realized across the value chain

customer relationships. For those that have been able to stave off exhaustion, protect their best people, and maintain their core principals through the darkest months, there is an imperative to double-down on that investment and take advantage of this moment of supplier power to partner with key customers to establish longterm aligned incentives. n (Editor’s note: Jeff Staub is the executive vice president, industry leader, aviation, aerospace and defense at Maine Pointe LLC Jeff Staub (website: www. mainepointe.com), a global supply chain and operations consulting firm. Onward and Upward or Caution and Concern? Aerospace Weighs Forecasts, Grapples with Covid-19 Developments By Michael C. Gabriele

E

arlier this year, as the rollout of Covid-19 vaccinations started gaining momentum, the commercial aerospace industry enjoyed an increase in ticket sales—a welcomed business development when compared with the crash of 2020 and potentially good news for the hard-hit supply chain, especially the titanium industry. However, in recent months, there have been growing concerns about the return of the pandemic via the highly contagious Covid-19 “Delta variant” and how it might, once again, disrupt the aerospace sector (and the hospitality industry). Economic uncertainty remains high, supply chains continue to experience difficulties and some government officials have quietly considered the possibility of restricting international flights. What’s the best way to assess current business conditions for the commercial aerospace market and its effects on the titanium industry? Based on a variety of news reports and industry analysis, looking ahead to the fourth quarter and moving into the first half of 2022, the “safe” answer is that the situation is improving but remains in transition, with aspirations that the pace of recovery for the aerospace business will continue to steadily gain traction, to benefit the titanium industry’s showcase end-use market. Providing an overview on the state of the global commercial aerospace industry, the Montreal-

18

TITANIUMTODAY

based International Air Transport Association (IATA; website: www. iata.org), in a Sept. 1 press release, reported that both international and domestic travel demand “showed significant momentum in July 2021 compared to June, but demand remained far below pre-pandemic levels. Extensive governmentimposed travel restrictions continue to delay recovery in international markets.” The IATA noted that comparisons between 2021 and 2020 monthly results “are distorted by the extraordinary impact of COVID-19,” and drew comparisons with data from July 2019, which followed a normal demand pattern.” ‘Government Decisions Not Driven by Data’ The IATA indicated that total demand for air travel in July 2021 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was down 53 percent compared to July 2019. “This is a significant improvement from June (2021), when demand was 60-percent below June 2019 levels. International passenger demand in July was 73.6 percent below July 2019, bettering the 80.9 percent decline recorded in June 2021 versus two years ago. All regions showed improvement and North American airlines posted the smallest decline in international RPKs." Willie Walsh, director general of the IATA, explained that the July results “reflected people’s eagerness to travel during to the Northern

Hemisphere this summer. Domestic traffic was back to 85 percent of precrisis levels, but international demand has only recovered just over a quarter of 2019 volumes. The problem is border control measures. Government decisions are not being driven by data, particularly with respect to the efficacy of vaccines. People traveled where they could, and that was primarily in domestic markets. A recovery of international travel needs governments to restore the freedom to travel. At a minimum, vaccinated travelers should not face restrictions. That would go a long way to reconnecting the world and reviving the travel and tourism sectors.” “As the Northern Hemisphere summer travel season draws to a close it is clear that too many governments missed the opportunity to apply a risk-based approach to managing their borders,” Walsh continued, quoted on the IATA website. “The growing number of fully vaccinated travelers and the prevalence of testing provided the chance to restore international connectivity and bring much needed relief to economies that are heavily reliant on travel and tourism. Instead, governments continued to behave as if it was the summer of 2020. Economies and the labor force will pay the price for decisions that were made not based on science, but on political expediency. Governments have rightly urged their populations to be vaccinated; now governments need to have confidence in the benefits of

vaccinations—including the freedom to travel.” The IATA is the trade association representing 290 airlines or 82 percent of total global air traffic. Airlines Order Single-Aisle Jets Aside from interpreting air travel RPK percentages, there have been positive developments for the commercial aerospace industry this year, most notably the move by United Airlines to order 270 new single-aisle/ narrow-body jets. The Wall Street Journal, in its June 29, 2021 online edition, reported that United “made its largest-ever plane order, adding Boeing and Airbus jets to fuel its postpandemic growth plans. The order— the largest by a U.S. airline since American Airlines ordered 460 new aircraft in 2011—is the latest sign of U.S. airlines growing confidence that travel is on course to snap back after being decimated by the coronavirus pandemic last year. United lost more than $7 billion last year and accepted billions of dollars in government aid to continue paying workers.” The order includes the purchase of 200 Boeing 737 MAX jets and 70 Airbus SE A321 neos, “a deal valued at more than $30 billion,” according to the Journal report. Two months after the United Airlines transaction, Delta Air Lines booked an order for 30 Airbus A321 neo jets. The online Airbus newsroom reported that the new aircraft come in addition to the airline’s existing orders for 125 existing orders for the aircraft, “bringing the outstanding orders from Delta to a total of 155 A321 neos.” Delta will begin receiving shipments of the new jets in early 2022. The A321 neos will be powered by nextgeneration Pratt & Whitney PW1100G turbofan engines. “Many of Delta’s A321 neos will be delivered from the 20

Airbus’ production facility in Mobile, AL,” according to the Airbus report. These bookings for new jets should boost the titanium industry. Aboulafia Weighs in on Trends These recent orders for singleaisle jets coincide with the outlook offered by aerospace industry analyst Richard Aboulafia (website: https://richardaboulafia.com), the vice president of analysis at the Teal Group Corp., Fairfax, VA (website: www.tealgroup.com). Aerospace Manufacturing and Design magazine (website: www. aerospacemanufacturinganddesign. com ) held a webinar, broadcasted on May 27, which featured Aboulafia’s “Aircraft Market Outlook, Second Half 2021.” His analysis and projections are frequently cited in charts and graphs presented by speakers at TITANIUM conferences, which are organized and sponsored by the International Titanium Association. Among the many points he covered in his online presentation, Aboulafia underlined his observation on the “secular shift” toward the production of single-aisle aircraft (and away from twin-aisle aircraft) in the fleet planning of Boeing and Airbus. This trend towards single-aisle jets isn’t new and has been noted in recent years by Aboulafia and other aerospace industry analysts. Boeing and Airbus, in separate forecasts issued in 2018, said single-aisle jets would dominate commercial aerospace orders through the year 2038—representing up to 70 percent of new aircraft deliveries. Aboulafia, in his presentation, pointed out that the industry’s recovery from the 2020 Covid-19 crash will be driven by single-aisle jets. He said Airbus and Boeing are poised to come “roaring back fast,” with an emphasis on singleaisle planes demonstrating signs of

health. “The trend is towards singleaisle jets, and much is riding on this for the supplier base.” Aboulafia also confessed to being an optimist, saying that he sees a commercial aerospace recovery, back to near-2019 air traffic peak levels, in late 2022 rather than early 2024, as many other analysts have predicted. “The stage is set for a comeback sooner than expected. People have an awful lot of money saved up, and they’ve stored their vacation days.” Separately, in a candid interview with Barron’s newspaper, published in March 2021, Aboulafia spoke about Boeing’s need to refocus its efforts on engineering—a notion than has an extended effect on the supply chain and the titanium industry. “They (Boeing) need to rethink where engineers fit in the company org chart. It’s really shocking to have an engineering company that basically doesn’t have engineers on its board. Boeing needs to empower engineers within the chain of command, reinforce engineering capabilities, and add more engineers to the board and the leadership team. Last year, Boeing’s engineering spending fell by over 25 percent. If it keeps losing market share and its engineering spending falls commensurately, it’s really tough to recover from that dynamic.” In July, the news service Reuters reported that Boeing would cut production of its 787 Dreamliner and is reviewing the status of its 737 MAX, “a double hit to the U.S. plane maker’s Covid-19 pandemic recovery.” According to Reuters, Boeing’s 737 MAX and 787 have been afflicted by electrical defects and other issues since late last year. Boeing delivered 156 jets of all types over the first seven months of 2021, compared with 157 jets for all of 2020. Last June, The New York Times reported that Boeing’s

long-range 777X would require an additional two years of testing before it wins regulatory approval. The 787 and 777X are major platforms for titanium, used for frames and engine components. Outlook from Deloitte Services Deloitte Services LLP, New York, a global business consulting company and one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, in an online outlook report, stated that the aerospace and defense industry’s revenue would recover in 2021, compared with 2020, but that recovery will likely be uneven across the two key sectors. “The commercial aerospace sector has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a dramatic reduction in passenger traffic, in turn affecting aircraft demand. As a result, the commercial aerospace sector is expected to recover slowly, as travel demand is not expected to return to pre– COVID-19 levels before 2024. The defense sector is expected to remain stable in 2021, as most countries have not significantly reduced defense budgets and remain committed to sustaining their military capabilities. However, given the disruption in the complex global supply chain, some defense programs could face minor cost increases and schedule delays in 2021.” Commercial passenger traffic may not return to pre-pandemic levels before 2024, which would negatively affect order books and deliveries for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). “In 2021, global commercial aircraft deliveries are estimated at 950 aircraft, a decline of 41 percent from 2018—the peak year for deliveries,” according to the Deloitte report. “Though the commercial aircraft order backlog stood firm at about 22

TITANIUMTODAY

13,421 at the end of December 2020, it was down 8.7 percent from the peak backlogs of about 14,700 at the end of 2018. Apart from commercial aircraft, deliveries for rotorcraft are also expected to remain nearly 15 percent below pre-pandemic levels in 2021, at 750 units. As new orders are likely to remain subdued in 2021 and airlines continue with order cancellations, aircraft backlog could decline further. Moreover, OEM rate reductions would continue to adversely affect the extended commercial aerospace manufacturing supply chain, especially the mid- to lower-tier suppliers, which may struggle due to lower earnings and cash flows.” Deloitte forecasted that the overall global aerospace industry will continue to focus on transforming supply chains into more resilient

and dynamic networks, which could be done using strategies such as on-shoring, vertical integration, and increased cyber defenses. “To further strengthen supply chains, OEMs and suppliers should leverage digital tools, including automating internal processes and streamlining workflows, implementing smart management systems, and using data analytics. Also, collaboration with regional players to build capabilities and shift manufacturing capacity when needed could make the aerospace and defense supply chain more robust and help the industry manage business disruptions. Many companies are also using an ecosystem approach to strengthen their supply chains. In a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, 72 percent of industry

executives said they are investing in supply chain ecosystems to leverage external alliance partners.” For many, it’s still difficult to fathom the size and scope of the disruption in the commercial aerospace sector in 2020, due to the global pandemic. Pricewaterhouse

Coopers (PwC; website: www. pwc.com), based in London, another member of the Big Four accounting firms, in its online “Global Aerospace and Defense Annual Industry Performance and Outlook” report, stated that, for 2020, the aerospace and defense industry reported $697 billion of revenue, down 8 percent from 2019, and $25 billion of operating profit, a decrease of 61 percent, primarily due to the impacts of COVID-19 on commercial aerospace, as revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) plummeted by 66 percent. The four largest Tier 1 suppliers to commercial jet manufacturers (Raytheon Technologies, GE Aviation, RollsRoyce and Safran), reported an aggregate operating profit loss of $1.4 billion for a decline of $16.3 billion.” n (Editor’s note: The International Titanium Association (ITA) does not generate its own industry forecasts. Tier4 Market Survey Projects Positive Outlook Despite Aerospace Supply Chain Uncertainties By Michael C. Gabriele

E

arlier this year, Chris Olin, the lead analyst for Tier4 Research, LLC, Avon OH, issued his Specialty Materials Update/Second Quarter Market Survey for the titanium industry, which provides insights on business trends and forecasts for the near term. Much of the information in the survey relates to projected business conditions in the aerospace supply chain. Olin tracked and analyzed key data points and trends that he deemed to be positive leading indicators for his “specialty materials peer group” (titanium, nickel based alloys, cobalt alloys and specialty stainless steel grades), which indicate a favorable outlook for for upstream producers, distributors, and premium forgers/ fabricators through the balance of 2021 and going into the first half of 2022. Despite current levels of uncertainty and a few expected caveats, the survey revealed an overall “positive market outlook” for the near term. Titanium Market Outlook The consensus calendar year 2021 upstream supplier growth forecast of down 12-13 percent looks to be in-line with our western world mill demand forecast of 145 million to 150 million pounds (down 13 percent versus calendar year 2020), according to Olin. “However, there could be some aerospace demand leakage over the next two quarters if the Boeing 787 production disruption turns out to be more problematic than expected. “We plan to review our 24

TITANIUMTODAY

full-year assumptions after getting a firmer read on the Boeing build rate schedules.” Olin said that, despite recent negative headlines regarding a disruption in 787 aircraft production, “we are sticking with a bullish thesis on the specialty materials group following a review of better-thanexpected quarterly survey results. Communications with industry contacts confirmed much stronger demand/pricing trends in the second quarter of 2021, improving channel sentiment and upward forecast revisions, approaching catalysts, and more manageable inventory situations. Key data points collected over the past few months suggest there is an upward bias to consensus forecasts (looking out three to four quarters), with emphasis placed on companies levered to jet engine OEM demand and the premium alloy product categories (nickel-based alloys, cobalt-alloys, and specialty stainless steel). Earlier this year, several news organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, Fortune.com and Reuters, reported Boeing halted deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner due to production difficulties. It’s uncertain how this situation will play out in the months ahead. Excess channel inventory While the average shipment comparisons reported by the entire survey group did reflect a modest sequential improvement, titanium performance dropped 6 percent in the

first quarter of 2021, year over year, which included an upstream supplier drag of down 12 percent. “Once again, our contacts cited aerospace supply chain destocking as the main factor behind the lagging recovery. Most titanium suppliers anticipate negative growth in calendar year 2021 and do not anticipate a market recovery before the first quarter in 2022. We believe the latest 787 news complicates the situation and could push the recovery timeline about two months to the right. While formal targets are uncertain, aerospace suppliers expect the 787 Dreamliner build rate to drop to three or four per month (through the end of 2021). Contacts would not label this event as a game-changer but said it may add another layer of channel noise.” Four Survey Data Points The survey data gathered by Olin provided the foundation a for positive market outlook, which he summarized in four points. First, there was an 850-basis point improvement in the consensus growth outlook for premium alloys in calendar year 2021 following a series of favorable headlines and OEM updates. Second, producer lead times improved by three to four weeks (on average) since the first quarter 2021, led by a positive six to seven-week upswing for nickel-based alloy and specialty stainless steel products. Third, survey contacts indicated they are seeing broad-based end-market demand strength, including distinct improvements in medical, power

generation, jet engines, the Airbus supply chain and aerospace fastener customer sourcing. Fourth, there is an early upswing in spot pricing for benchmark titanium mill products. The results from Olin’s quarterly specialty materials survey work provided “an increasingly favorable outlook for the companies within our coverage universe levered to premium alloys and specialty stainless steel production. Despite conceding to renewed titanium alloy and composite material volume uncertainties related to negative 787 production headlines, we believe key data points collected from the channel over the past few months indicate an upward bias to

consensus forecasts (looking out three to four quarters), focusing on the jet engine suppliers.” The Bottom Line The latest channel intelligence has seemingly confirmed the premium alloy group entrance into the initial stages of recovery, according to Olin. “We now expect management teams of upstream-levered companies to confirm a reversal in underlying alloy demand and provide a favorable market outlook. There was a pronounced improvement in channel sentiment throughout the month of June and specialty material contacts provided us with data points 26

that generally supported our bullish thesis for the peer group. Emphasis was placed on a pronounced rebound in short-cycle orders, the enhanced commercial aerospace demand visibility (along with improving customer communications), and upward mill price momentum.” Olin added that the projected positive market outlook included the increasingly favorable aerospace demand outlook, a rising mill pricing environment and expectations for a higher 737 build rate. “However, we plan to revisit some of the near-term modeling assumptions considering the disappointing 787 production news and Federal Aviation Administration statements.”

Survey contacts reported higher transaction values for titanium and premium alloy products in relation to the first-quarter 2021 averages, driven by the favorable demand environment and upward cost pressure. Spot quotes for the benchmark product categories have already increased by 2 to 4 percent since March (on average) and were generally expected to hold in a steady up remain in a similar trajectory for the rest of 2021. Mill Shipments Turned Positive Aerospace and defense millshipment comparisons turned positive during the second quarter of 2021, following five consecutive periods of volume contraction, with many contacts pointing to a pronounced rebound in Boeing supply chain, Airbus supply chain, jet engine OEM, and aero fastener sourcing. growing number of suppliers are benefitting from a modest improvement in industrial-related activity or greater spot-purchase frequency. Olin asked his survey contacts about the sequential demand momentum (for actively tracked end-users) in an attempt to get better understand the current catalysts and future opportunities. “Five customer groups were frequently referenced as stronger or gaining momentum: medical; aero fasteners; jet engine OEM; Airbus supply chain, and power turbine. Perhaps more importantly, no customer group was collectively reported to be turning negative or trending lower versus the first-quarter levels.” Flashback to 2020 By way of comparison from the dark days of Covid-19, the grim July 2020 Titanium Status Report 28

put together by Olin found that the titanium peer group was navigating through the most challenging market environment ever seen. The Covid-19 global pandemic disrupted supply chains and severely undercut major industrial markets including commercial aerospace. “At this point, we assume the specialty material providers in our focus group are trending 500-600 basis points below consensus expectations (from a sales perspective), with implemented cost reduction efforts unlikely to counteract the top-line pressure anticipated over the next two quarters,” Olin said. n (Editor’s note: Tier4 Research LLC (website: www.tier4research.com) is a “bottom-up” aerospace research provider focused on timely analysis of the entire supply chain, with an upstream channel focus (or “Tier4” peer group), specialty materials

When Will the Aerospace Industry Rebound from the Covid-19 Global Pandemic? (Part 3) By Tom Captain

Existential Impact As previously mentioned, this pandemic, now going on 18 months in duration, has had an existential impact, never experienced before in the commercial aerospace industry and its broader ecosystem. From airline passengers, to the airports, airlines, aircraft producers, aircraft suppliers, the hotels, restaurants, catering companies, and aircraft repair, maintenance and spare parts companies, the pandemic has created 30

TITANIUMTODAY

economic and employment hardship. Global airlines have lost almost $100 billion, and still counting, and wiped out all their cumulative profits made since WWII, a statement worth repeating to fully grasp the impact. Passenger travel went from over 8.5 trillion RPKs (revenue passenger kilometers) to less than 10 percent of that level within a span of 30 days. It’s as if the world stood still. Aircraft sales orders plummeted from a high of 2,900 in the recent past to 330 orders in 2020. Airline production went from a high of 1,600 aircraft recently to 440 aircraft produced in 2020, as the chart below depicts:

In those markets, airports have become congested again and aircraft capacity has reached pre-pandemic load factor rates. Domestic airlines and the airports that serve them are having difficulty in staffing up fast enough to serve this incredibly resurgent demand. The picture is much different on the international front, with cross border and trans-oceanic flights still only 15 percent of its pre-pandemic levels. This is due to onerous government cross border restrictions still in place, such as 14day quarantines, pre-travel Covid-19 testing requirements or outright bans on travel between certain countries.

n the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, we offered in TITANIUM TODAY a sobering forecast for a difficult recovery in the aerospace industry, and similar prospects for titanium and other raw materials suppliers. As of this writing, the Economist magazine estimates there have been 14 million pandemic fatalities worldwide, and only 5 percent of those aged over 12 are fully vaccinated. Many parts of the world are still in the grips of rising infections and additional deaths. On the positive side, key economic drivers of the global economy, particularly in the United States, China, and European Union countries, have succeeded in vaccinating over half of its citizens, and reopened their economies. However, with every hopeful advance, there are unfortunate negative trends such as with the rise of the Delta variant, people not willing to get vaccinated, mask mandates being re-instated, and borders being closed again.

Assessing Aerospace’s Rebound However, passenger travel is recovering, especially in the domestic markets. As of this writing, domestic airline passenger enplanements have almost returned to their prepandemic levels, about 75 percent globally, and even better in the United States and China domestic markets.

The following chart from the Montreal-based International Air Transport Association (IATA) illustrates the uneven recovery we are experiencing in air travel: The rebound in major domestic markets, driven by increased vaccination rates, reduced infections and fatalities, success of Covid-19

safety protocols and loosening or elimination of government restrictions has clearly had a positive impact on the aerospace eco-system. As mentioned earlier, from airport and airline personnel to aircraft producers and their suppliers, activity is ramping back up. For titanium and other raw material suppliers to the aerospace business, this is good news. Aircraft production rates are starting to ramp back up, meaning that suppliers are starting to receive orders for parts again. Pratt & Whitney, as well as GE and Safran—producers of the CFM engines—are seeing a dramatic uptick in jet engine maintenance activity. “Airlines are spending money ahead of the recovery,” Greg Hayes, the CEO for Raytheon Technologies, said. Raytheon said that commercial MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) sales increased 41 percent by June 30, 2021. GE Aviation’s maintenance and spare parts revenues increased 50 percent. Many of those spare parts are made from titanium. That’s good news for that supplier base. 32

The recovery of the airline and aerospace ecosystem is reliant on passenger’s trust that they will not contract Covid-19 while traveling. This, in turn, was dependent on vaccination rates and expectations of travel requirements, including safety protocols such as mask wearing, negative tests, and government travel restrictions. Progress is being made on each of these fronts. – Tom Captain Demand for Travel, Increased Vaccinations There continues to be an almost insatiable appetite for air travel, and the recovery from the pandemic is dependent on this demand. We observe there is an instinctual desire

of mankind to meet face to face, for domestic, business and leisure reasons. Mankind is wanderlust, having the desire to experience the world and to connect face to face with business associates, friends and family domestically and internationally. This has been the trend since the advent of

commercial airline operations. We are reminded that passenger travel volume has risen from about 1 trillion to 8.5 trillion RPK’s in the period from 1980 to early 2020, despite shocks to the system such as the SARS epidemic, Middle East wars, H1N1 virus and the Ebola epidemic during that time period. The demand for travel is quite resilient and despite economic, conflict and health reasons, the long-term demand for air travel continues to grow. However as previously mentioned, government allowance and passenger trust in safe travel will depend on vaccination rates increasing. Consider for a moment that it is estimated that only 6 to 20 percent of the global population has ever traveled by air. Consider also that millions, if not billions of people will enter the middle class, as global economies advance and wealth is created for its citizenry. Due to these two factors, we expect demand for travel will continue unabated for decades if not centuries to come; another cause for optimism for this industry and its supply base. Reviewing Forecasts As described in Parts 1 and 2 of this author’s forward look, published in TITANIUM TODAY, the recovery of the airline and aerospace ecosystem is reliant on passenger’s trust that they will not contract Covid-19 while traveling. This, in turn, was dependent on vaccination rates and expectations of travel requirements, including safety protocols such as mask wearing, negative tests, and government travel restrictions. Progress is being made on each of these fronts. However, there is a significant

34

TITANIUMTODAY

portion of the 7.5 billion people on earth who have not been fully vaccinated, some by choice and some due to vaccine availability. Significant efforts to cajole or require where necessary, the remaining population to obtain the vaccine are underway. Humanitarian efforts to provide vaccinations to underserved populations such as in Africa are underway. Thus we expect vaccination rates will significantly increase, maybe to the often cited 70-percent level required for herd immunity. While vaccination efforts continue, the unexpected return of domestic travel so soon is certainly a cause for optimism for aerospace suppliers. Both the increase in aircraft production rates as well as increased aircraft MRO activity, bodes well for the aerospace manufacturing industry and the parts and the raw materials supplier base. In Part 2, we forecasted that by late 2021, airline passenger traffic would experience a significant increase and stated that vaccines were the key for passengers to feel safe to enable increased passenger traffic. We are still on track with that forecast. We also forecasted that the global airline industry would experience a 50-percent return to RPK levels by late 2021. We forecasted a near recovery of previous RPK volume in the late 2022 timeframe and we forecasted aerospace OEM and aerospace supplier network production volume to pick up mid to late 2023 for the suppliers. Upon reflection, we are probably ahead of that forecast due to the success of vaccination rates, the quick rebound of domestic air travel in important global regions, the

resulting uptick in both new aircraft production rates as well as increased levels of maintenance of older aircraft. Thus, here in Part 3, we now forecast aircraft sales and production to return to its pre-pandemic levels by early 2023, about 16 months from this writing (in August 2021). On the other hand, we are concerned about the long-lasting damage that the pandemic has had on the industry, with layoffs, bankruptcies, inability to afford innovation, loss of key skilled personnel and financial stress. It remains to be seen if there will be unrecoverable damage and negative consequences. Time will tell. We remain optimistic with the long-term forecast of 40,000 new aircraft to be produced over the next 20 years. As we return to growth, the aerospace supply chain should become healthy again. It is already happening. n (Tom Captain is the managing director of Captain Global Advisory, LLC, headquartered in Mercer Island, WA, and is a 40year industry Tom Captain veteran and expert in the aerospace, defense and space sector. Tribute to Sam Froes, Powder Metal Technology Expert By Michael C. Gabriele

“T

he future appears bright for the various facets of titanium powder metallurgy technology. This includes the pre-alloyed/HIP (hot isostatic pressing), metal injection molding (MIM) methods, and especially additive manufacturing (AM). With the dramatically growing market for additive manufacturing and consistent property performance of an increasing number of AM titanium components, the use of metal powders for the manufacture of structural components is expected to become more acceptable than before. This will, in turn, assist in the further development of titanium powder metallurgy.” “The bottom line is that a low-cost powder with good flow/packing is needed. On the other hand, research on titanium powder metallurgy has seen increasing momentum over the last two decades, with a number of promising developments or initiatives in the research base at present. Some breakthroughs may well occur in the next decade or so, leading to increased applications of powder metallurgy titanium components.” So wrote industry sage, researcher and prolific author Sam Froes in the 2015 edition of the technical journal “Titanium Powder Metallurgy.” In many ways, this article summarized his contributions to the understanding of powder metallurgy technology and its applications. In Memoriam:

David Robertson 1938 - 2021 David Garth Robertson was born on March 31, 1938. On Saturday, September 11th, 2021, he passed away at the age of 83, one day after the 63rd anniversary to his wife Kathy. Dave was a proud parent of three children, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Dave spent his life with his high school sweetheart, often traveling the world, experiencing the opera in Italy, Shakespeare in the UK, museums in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mt. Fuji in Japan and Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, Munich, Germany and more. Creating lifelong friendships in countries all over the world, his friends stayed close throughout his life. Dave was born in Shelby, MT, to Alexander and Verdella Robertson. He graduated from Whitefish High in 1956 and received his degree in business from the University of Montana in Missoula. Dave spent his career in the field of metallurgy, with a focus on titanium. He was known for his work in Russia, for the donation of life-saving medical supplies to their country, and for his presence with the International Titanium Association. Dave loved to sail, fly, golf and ski, both here in the states and in his travels abroad. He was known for his engaging storytelling, quick wit, and his passion for telling a good (or bad) joke. When he wasn’t traveling for work, you could find him on the ski run with his wife working for Ski Patrol. His father, Alexander, an Irish immigrant, his mother, Verdella, and his brother Denny preceded Dave in death. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his three children, Lorraine, Michael, and Robyn, and his two sisters Arlen and Kathy. A limb has fallen from the family tree, that says please don’t grieve for me. Remember the best times, the laughter and song. The good life I lived when I was strong. (Unknown Author) In lieu of a funeral service, the family will hold a Celebration of Life in the early summer of next year, 2022. U.S. VANADIUM SECURES 5-YEAR SUPPLY OF VANADIUM FEED MATERIAL FOR PROCESSING INTO HIGH-PURITY VANADIUM PRODUCTS AND ULTRA-HIGH-PURITY VANADIUM REDOX FLOW BATTERY ELECTROLYTE HOT SPRINGS, Ark., Sept. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Vanadium (“USV” or the “Company) is pleased to announce that it has secured five years of supply of vanadium feed material as USV continues to ramp up production of high-purity vanadium oxide and ultrahigh-purity electrolyte for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (“VRFBs”) at its Hot Springs, AR facility. USV recovers vanadium from this feed material, sourced from India, and process it into the world’s highest-purity vanadium oxides and downstream vanadium chemicals, including ultra-high-purity VRFB electrolyte. USV also processes vanadium feedstock streams from a variety of other sources. “We are pleased to have secured five years of supply of this high-volume and high-quality feedstock, as this will enable us to significantly expand our production operations while also further diversifying our vanadium feedstock supply chains,” said Mark A. Smith, Chairman and CEO of USV. “This material will help us serve the needs of titanium alloy producers and vanadium specialty chemicals markets, as well as help us to significantly ramp up our production of ultra-high-purity VRFB electrolyte that is in growing demand by the rapidly expanding VRFB industry.” Named as a “Critical Mineral” by the federal government in 2018, vanadium is used extensively as an additive to titanium-aluminum alloys used in jet engines and high-speed aircraft, both in the defense and commercial sectors, and it is a key additive to high-strength, low-alloy

steel used in armor plate, axles, tools, piston rods and crankshafts, and mega-construction projects. In its ultra-high-purity form, vanadium is a critical component in the electrolyte that enables operation of VRFBs, which are rechargeable batteries that take advantage of the fact that vanadium ions in different oxidation states can efficiently store chemical potential energy. VRFBs allow for an almost unlimited energy capacity, can be discharged to very high percentages without damage, have very long cycle lives (at least 15,000-20,000 charge/discharge cycles), and can remain unused for long periods without permanent effects to the system. Because of their nearly unlimited energy storage capacity, high efficiency, zero emissions, very long cycle lives, and relatively low cost of available electricity on a lifecycle basis, VRFB energy storage systems are enabling consumers to utilize renewable energy systems for 100% of their actual power needs without having to rely on renewable energy credits and other accounting offsets. US Vanadium produces the world’s highest purity V2O5, V2O3, and downstream vanadium chemicals including VRFB electrolyte by recovering contained vanadium from a variety of post-industrial waste streams, which underscores US Vanadium’s commitment to maximizing sustainable practices in its operations. More information on U.S. Vanadium, and vanadium technologies in general, can be seen on U.S. Vanadium’s website: https://www.usvanadium.com.

Specialty Metallurgical Products Specialty Metallurgical Products (SMP) was started in 1984 by James H. Clark (Jim Clark Sr.), when he envisioned the need for a better, less costly grain refiner than the then standard master alloy. Originally the company was started to produce Master Alloy in Shot form, however that product never made it into the market place. Instead SMP was the first company to produce and offer a 100% titanium tablet to the aluminum alloy producers, free from binders and salts. Today, almost all aluminum smelters use 100% titanium tablets/pucks to make their titanium additions. The Company’s manufacturing Plant and Offices are located in Red Lion, Pennsylvania and have been since 1994. TITANIUM Marine https://timarinehex.com/ For over 30 years, we’ve been using Titanium in our marine heat exchangers. It’s the ONLY material we use where sea water comes into direct contact with the ship’s air conditioning system. High efficiency and long service life are a direct result of the toughness that Titanium brings to A/C service. With high speed water velocities in the tubes, the exchangers are kept free of marine growth and silt deposits, both of which reduce heat transfer. The US Navy now specifies Titanium as the material of choice for machinery heat exchangers. This significantly reduces the annual replacement costs and helps maintain combat readiness. Your Engines, Gear Boxes, Hydraulic Power Units and Comfort Cooling systems can be equally protected, providing service years longer

than Brass or Copper units. Importantly, the operating costs for the ship are lowered and vessel ‘downtime’ is reduced.
