T

he Titanium Virtual 2020 Conference and Expo, broadcasted online Oct. 1214, was unlike any business forum organized and sponsored by the International Titanium Association (ITA) during the last 35 years. The “virtual” element came out of necessity due to the concerns and travel restrictions from the Covid-19 global pandemic. Even though this online program, by definition, meant “social isolation” and the lack of face-to-face interaction of an in-person event, the Zoom panelists rose to the occasion and delivered thoughtful, coherent, timely observations on current business trends and global market conditions that exist in the age of Covid-19. By any measure, 2020 will go down as the worst year in history for the global aviation industry—a swift downturn that has rattled the titanium industry and the titanium global aerospace supply chain. This steep drop in the commercial aerospace industry has been documented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which reported that airlines are expected to lose $84 billion this year. Revenues in 2020 revenue would likely fall to $419 billion compared with $838 billion in 2019, which over 7 million flights were cancelled from January to July. The IATA (www.iata.org), with headquarters in Montreal, is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing 290 airlines or 82

percent of total global air traffic. The dire assessment is shared by virtually every industry leader and observer in the commercial aerospace industry. Given the negative impact on business conditions, the question now is: how will Covid-19 affect the titanium industry, which targets aerospace as its showcase market? Speakers on the ITA’s Zoom 2020 Aerospace and Defense panel addressed this question. There was three points of unanimity by the panelist on the current aerospace situation: current market conditions are historically bad; commercial aerospace won’t see a return to more normal market conditions until 2023/2024; and the military aerospace market is reasonably stable for titanium business. Laurent Jara, vice president, metallic materials, Airbus S.A.S., began by first stating that Covid-19 is the most severe crisis every faced by

the commercial aerospace market, but added that his main message of his presentation was “resilience,” and that the industry will bounce back. “We must find ways to mitigate and adapt,” to the crisis, Jara said. However, Jara didn’t mince words assessing the plight of the airline business in 2020: 14,000 aircraft have been grounded; there’s been a 90-95 percent drop in global flights; 80 percent of passenger traffic has been lost this year; there’s been a $31.4 billion loss of passenger revenue; and the global aerospace supply chain is “at risk.” “We’ve managed to ramp down” business this year due to the slowdown, he said. “We now must manage to ramp up. Our supply chain is very complex. We’re trying to find a balance to see what the titanium supply chain is able to absorb.” Jara said titanium demand for Airbus’ A320neo single-aisle jets and A350 wide-body jets is likely to remain “very low” during 2021 and 2022.

said, with a touch of melancholy in his voice.

Jeffrey Carpenter, senior director, contracts and category leader/raw materials and standards, Boeing Co., provided a reality check on the informal surroundings for his Zoom talk, saying he’s working at home and hasn’t been to his office at Boeing since March 9. While confirming that Covid-19 has been an “unprecedented shock” to commercial aerospace, Carpenter noted that there has been a stable global demand for defense and space government services. He said there are also early signs that a recovery for commercial aerospace is starting slowly.

chain. “We will all be more efficient and production focused.”

The damage done by Covid-19 to the aerospace industry is “about as bad as we feared and maybe worse,” Aboulafia declared. However, he did say that military aerospace programs have held up better than expected in 2020. Prior to the coronavirus shock, he pointed out that the industry did see a bit of a slowdown in 2019, following the “super cycle” growth years of air travel between 2014 and 2018. He was hopefully that a recovery, approaching 2019 aerospace industry levels, would begin to emerge by 2023.

Much like the Airbus and Boeing executives, Richard Aboulafia, the oft-quoted vice president of analysis at the TEAL Group, remains stunned by the scope of the Covid-19 impact on commercial aerospace. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my 33 years of looking at aircraft programs and markets.” He also recalled that his last plane flight in 2020 took place on March 9. “I remember it well,” he

Aboulafia said expects to see a steep 63-percent decline in global RPK (revenue passenger kilometers) for 2020, “which reflects the terrible reality of the pandemic.” He offered a one-page chart for his global aircraft market in 2020. The total aerospace industry (civilian and military) will decline 30 percent compared with 2019. The categories for that overall number include a 36.5-percent

As for his outlook on the titanium aerospace supply chain, Carpenter said there have been “significant price declines” for titanium ingot, scrap and sponge, the titanium material categories used for airframes, engines and landing gear. For the near term, he observed that inventories across the titanium supply chain are high and titanium scrap is plentiful due to the weakness in consumption. From an internal perspective, Carpenter said that Boeing, as planned, has fully implemented its Boeing Raw Material Aggregation System as a means to improve data control, visibility and forecasting for materials (especially titanium and aluminum) in its supply TITANIUMTODAY

B-21 Raider is expected to begin test flights in 2022. Even though he remains optimistic, Seiner said that the overall aerospace recovery from Covid-19 is likely to be uneven during the next few years. He ended his remarks by saying: “may 2021 allow us to reduce our Zoom dependency and move back toward normal and allow us to meet face to face in San Diego next October,” referring to the planned TITANIUM 2021 North American conference. Donald B. Simmons, III, the director of operations at CWTI, Crossworks Technologies Inc. decline in single-aisle aircraft; a near 43-percent decline in twin-aisle aircraft; and a 20-percent decline in business aircraft. He did warn that the situation might get worse in the near term, before it gets better. “There’s no doubt that we will get back to ‘normal’, but the next few years will hurt.” Henry Seiner, vice president, business strategy, Timet, and a former president of the ITA executive board, participated as a speaker for the World Titanium Industry Demand Trends Zoom panel. He did, however, provide aerospace insights with his presentation on the “Military Market in a COVID World.” Like the other speakers, Seiner observed that the global pandemic has driven the commercial aerospace market “over the cliff” in 2020, but said that military aerospace business has been relatively stable. “But the military business can’t come close to absorbing commercial losses” for the titanium industry, he said. Citing a chart from Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine, Seiner said that, for near-term 12

military programs, 2,100 aircraft are expected to be delivered during the next five years. About 50 percent of that aircraft total will be going to Asian/Pacific defense customers, with 40 percent earmarked for North American and European defense customers. Seiner pointed out that this 2,100 aircraft total doesn’t include the production of the new U.S. military B21 Raider Stealth Bomber, being built by Northrup-Grumman, which is designed to complement or partially replace the military’s current fleet of B1 and B2 bombers. According to online press reports, the

(CWTI), delivered an uplifting message against the backdrop of Covid-19-related turmoil in the aerospace industry. Simmons’ presentation, titled “Changing the Culture of an Organization to Improve Performance,” provided a story of how focused, positive leadership can turn around a moribund, discouraged work environment. Thought it might not have been his original intention, Simmons program could serve as an inspirational tale of hope for titanium and aerospace companies reeling

from the global pandemic fallout. Simmons said that, in December 2019, he retired as a captain in the navy after 30 years of service, most of which dealt with aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and logistics. He joined CWIT, based in Orlando, FL, and became the director of operations, a position that led him to being selected as the commanding officer at the Naval Air Station’s Fleet Readiness Center, a facility of 100 buildings (many over 100 years old) located at North Island, CA. Among its various work assignments, the center performs MRO work on the military’s F18 Hornet aircraft.

stewards at the center, and partnered with Navy and Boeing engineers. His second motto: “Three and Thirty,” meaning the delivery of three F18 Hornet aircraft, with approved MRO work, in 30 days. Simmons made himself visible, walking through the production areas of the center every morning. “I was supportive of the staff. We met eye to eye. The workforce started to believe. The ‘helplessness’ of the past started to fade. The culture started to change. We celebrated victories, big and small.”

Upon his arrival at the Fleet Readiness Center, he quickly realized that he was walking into a difficult situation. The sprawling facility had a reputation for poor performance and strained labor relations, with a “culture of complacency” among its employees and managers. There were dusty posters of slogans and goals hung throughout the walls of the installation. “None of (the goals) were being met,” Simmons said. Taking stock of the gloomy environment, he recalled the phrase “actions express

emphasizing the word “do.” He took action. Simmons quickly removed individuals at the center who had violated OSHA regulations, which sent “shock waves throughout the workforce.” He got rid of the trite posters of slogans and instituted two mottos for the center. The first: “compliance and deliver to promise— no exceptions.” He empowered the workforce and held individuals accountable. Inspections would be taken seriously. He established a dialogue among the five union

The center achieved the three and thirty goal and went on to set even more ambitious goals, all of which were met. After one year the facility completed MRO on 38 F18 aircraft. The Fleet Readiness Center garnered awards for its performance. Simmons outlined five key points in the turnaround: focus on compliance; deliver on promises; set and achieve incremental goals, partner with others; and celebrate every victory. “We changed the organization’s culture and, in the process, became the best MRO command in the Department of Defense,” he said, concluding his program. n

As We Navigate Through the Global Covid-19 Crisis, When Will the Aerospace Industry Rebound? (Part 2) By Tom Captain

I

n the first quarter 2020 Industrial Edition of “Titanium Today” we described the challenges and opportunities for recovery of the aerospace industry from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In late April 2020, there were over 200,000 fatalities worldwide from the COVID-19 virus, with over 50,000 in the United States. (As of this writing, the number of U.S. fatalities so far has topped 220,000; over 1.1 million worldwide—over a four-fold increase in the ensuing six months.) We described an optimistic scenario then, based on: 1.) the instinctual desire of mankind to meet face to face, 2.) the forecasted development of treatments and vaccines within the next 12 months, and 3.), government support for the air transportation business globally. In April we forecasted that there would be a 50 percent return of passenger traffic within the next 12 months and a full recovery within 24 months. However, that was then, and unfortunately the news has only gotten worse, despite promising medical advances. Recovery headwinds increasing The airline and aerospace manufacturing industry recovery is experiencing additional headwinds, specifically: 1.) the significant rise in the number of positive cases, 2.) the tenuous condition of the air transport business and uncertainty as to 14

TITANIUMTODAY

continued government support, and 3.) the troubled financial condition of the aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and supplier networks and their ability to survive until the turnaround. Even the casual reader would have noticed that, after a short downward trend in positive cases, relaxation of social distancing and other restrictions has contributed to increased infections. There have been forecasts that, by December, there will be over 1.5 million fatalities worldwide, with over 300,000 of those fatalities in the United States. With the daily increases in confirmed cases increasing with no end in sight, this does not bode well for the aerospace industry, from small suppliers, to the OEM’s to the airlines and their flying passengers. This increase in infection rates has led to a reinstatement of restrictions generally, and additions of restrictions on travel, such as the EU restriction on admitting passengers from the United States and the extension of other cross border travel restrictions, such as between the United States and Canada. It all begins with the passenger. In a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, 73 percent of respondents indicated they did not feel safe flying right now. Among U.S. respondents, 77 percent said they would likely not take a domestic flight for leisure purposes in the next three months, and 86 percent stated they were unlikely to fly internationally during that same

span. Because of the continued cataclysmic reduction in passenger travel, the airlines have been severely impacted. In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) which monitors passenger numbers, states that there has been a 91-percent reduction of airline travelers when compared to the same time last year. Major airlines have already terminated many employees and have recently announced additional significant layoffs, should US Federal assistance run out. Out of the estimated 30,000 aircraft flying globally prior to the pandemic, over two-thirds of those aircraft have been taken out of service and not earning revenue. What is the Impact on the Aerospace Supply Chain? The economic conditions and forecasts for the airline industry are poor and getting worse. The fact that we have not experienced a major airline bankruptcy as of this writing is largely due to government support thus far. The first round of government support is about to end later this year and, as such, the airline industry could experience an existential financial decline. However, certain sovereign governments in Europe, Asia and the Americas are discussing additional government support to protect the airline industry. At the same time, many airlines

When Will the Aerospace Industry Rebound? (continued)

have delayed or terminated plans to accept new aircraft from the major aircraft OEM’s. These aircraft producers have responded by significantly reducing the production rates of commercial aircraft, and reduced or halted delivery of major assemblies and systems from their Tier 1 suppliers of engines, avionics, interiors, aerostructures and assemblies. For aluminum and titanium suppliers, along with other Tier 2 and 3 suppliers, this reduction or termination of deliveries cascades down to them as well. Companies are taking action to reduce their labor costs to match the diminished levels of demand. The bottom line impact on the aerospace supply chain is as devastating as it is for the airline industry—layoffs have been announced and put into place, suppliers are pleading for government support, weak suppliers may go bankrupt or sell out, and companies are implementing the “new normal” lower level of production activity. Is there reason for hope? As stated in the April article, we described a key reason for hope is mankind’s insatiable appetite and instinctual desire to experience the world and to connect face to face with business associates, friends and family domestically and internationally. This has been the trend since the advent of commercial airline operations. We are reminded that passenger travel volume has risen from about 1 trillion to 8 trillion revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) in the period from 1980 to early 2020, despite shocks to the system such as the SARS epidemic, Middle East wars, H1N1 virus and the Ebola epidemic during that time period. In addition, there are over 100 vaccines in development globally and many have started human trials. Some are expected to be approved in late 2020 and in early 2021. Mass vaccinations would, of course, take time, and in the meantime, therapeutic treatment for the infected is getting better, resulting in a lower fatality rate, despite the increased infection rate. A good assumption is that by late 2021, airline passenger traffic would experience a significant increase. Vaccines are the key for passengers to feel safe to enable increased passenger traffic. Other solutions offered such as empty middle row seats, airport bio-safe zones, health pre-clearance procedures, other airline health safety procedures, mandatory masks and airport temperature checks are stop gap solutions that would not lead to industry recovery by themselves. It is also expected that government support of the airline industry as well as the aerospace supplier and OEM

16

TITANIUMTODAY

base would be extended to keep the vital industry alive, albeit at a much lower level of activity, especially in the short run. But again, this would not lead to an industry recovery without mass vaccinations to bring passengers back. When will the industry recover? With the additional headwinds, we forecast that the global airline industry may experience a 50-percent return to RPK levels, about 4 trillion RPK’s, six months after the availability of vaccines on a widespread basis. That puts this forecast in the late 2021 timeframe, about 12 months from now. In addition, we expect a near recovery of previous RPK volume in the late 2022 timeframe, about 24 months from now. Once the RPK volume is assured, and airline operations return to normal levels, we expect aerospace OEM and aerospace supplier network production volume to pick up, albeit on a 6-12 month lagging basis. This puts the forecasted recovery timeframe in the 30-36 month delay period, about mid to late 2023 for the suppliers. Although not an encouraging scenario, the commercial aerospace industry will most certainly turn the corner once the vaccine becomes widely available. This is the key inflection point for the industry to recover. But what matters most is what kind of damage will occur in the meantime: how many airlines and aerospace suppliers can’t wait that long? How many will go bankrupt, merge or simply go out of business? What will this mean in the long term? Time will tell. On a more optimistic note, once the vaccine provides the confidence for passengers to travel again, we expect a burst of pent-up demand. Also, as the global economy recovers, more people will be lifted into the middle class, which is a key driver of RPK growth. This is a key factor for the airline and aerospace industries to return to growth. We remain optimistic with the long term forecast of 40,000 new aircraft to be produced over the next 20 years. As we return to growth, the aerospace supply chain should become healthy again. n Tom Captain is the managing director of Captain Global Advisory, LLC, headquartered in Mercer Island, WA, and is a 40-year industry veteran and expert in the aerospace, defense and space sector. Barrable’s Titanium Gongs Serve as Instruments That Have Harmonic Resonance with the Times By Michael C. Gabriele

E

ach of Ross Barrable’s titanium gongs produce mesmerizing layers of sound with each strike of a mallet. “Layers of sound” are an apt description, as demonstrated on the website (https://crystaniumgongs. com). A Crystanium Gong, when struck, shimmers with complex sound textures—low, haunting rumbles; cascading middle tones; topped by hypnotic overtones. The vibrations start softly and gently, and then gradually increasing in volume and in unison, with whispers of sustained echoes. Titanium gongs are the latest creation by Barrable, who defines himself as a musician, acoustic sculptor, sonic engineer and luthier, with imagination and creativity. Some in the titanium industry might recall that he was a speaker at TITANIUM USA 2016, when he discussed his titanium wind harps. Barrable, the founder of Soundscapes International Inc., based in Pagosa Springs, CO, installed his first titanium wind harp in 1995 in Denver’s Congress Park. Interviewed in mid-October 2020, he said there’s a connection between his signature titanium wind harps and the evolution of his new line of titanium gongs. The key element linking the two is the wind harp’s titanium resonator which is a spun titanium “vessel” that generates the 18

designs to optimize the harmonics, which led to the creation of titanium bells. Eventually, he realized the capability to transform the bells into a gong, and work on the new product was underway. “I said to myself: “Titanium is the substance of the 21st century gong,” recalling his process of inspiration. To market the product, Barrable trademarked the name “CrysTanium®

As a result of his 30year, well-established business relationship with the titanium industry, he transitioned to the fabrication of the gongs, which are formed out of 99.5-percent pure titanium and individually tuned and anodized by hand in his gong shop in Pagosa Springs. There are videos of 10 gongs posted on the website (https://Crystaniumgongs.com) to demonstrate their individual sound qualities. Visual artist Karina Silver creates each gong’s dazzling graphic design, made permanent via the anodizing process. The gongs measure 26 and 32 inches in diameter and carry price tags of $2,400 and $3,200.

Barrable’s Titanium Gongs (continued)

While Barrable is an artist at heart, he also maintains a strong sense of the international marketing potential for his gongs. Part of the business opportunity might be fallout from government-mandated lockdowns due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. There’s anecdotal evidence, especially via social media outlets, to suggest that in order to cope with physical and emotional tension from pandemic isolation, many people are turning to meditation, yoga exercises, and contemplative spiritual and religious practices—all within the confines of their living spaces. “There are ‘gong baths’ happening all over the world,” he said. “Almost every yoga studio has a gong nowadays.” On his website, he states that gong vibrations are “our oldest means of sound therapy, meant to reduce stress, still the conscious mind, and re-focus and ascend our attention currents.” Barrable confessed that he has a personal affinity for titanium’s healing properties—as a medical implant. “I have a piece of titanium in my forehead, due to an auto accident years ago.” Barrable explained there are practical, down-toearth benefits from enjoying the sound of his gongs. “Today everyone wants your attention. We’re being bombarded with information. It diffuses our energy and creativity. It takes effort to focus on what you want and what you need to do,” he said, referring to the daily prioritizing of personal choices with family, relationships and business. “If my attention is scattered, then it’s very difficult to make important decisions, and that’s a problem. If you don’t know what you want, then someone else will make those decisions for you. The deeply immersive sound of a gong can be used as a tool to collect and focus our units of attention. It actually gives the mind a temporary vacation, an opportunity to simply “be still and follow the sound.” Regarding the ancient history of gongs, James Blades, who served as a professor at London’s Royal Academy of Music, in his 1992 book Percussion Instruments and Their History, wrote that “the origin of the gong is uncertain, but there seems little reason to doubt the claim of the Chinese, whose tradition ascribes it to the country Hsi 20

TITANIUMTODAY

Yu, between Tibet and Burma, where it is mentioned early in the sixth century in the time of Emperor Hsuan Wu. Gongs are the most important metal instruments in the Southeast. All types and sizes are covered by the same definition. They are made of bronze in a circular shape, with the surface flat or bulging and the rim bent down (the vibrations issuing from the center).” Blades wrote there’s also evidence of prehistoric African “rock gongs,” which vibrate due to their internal iron content. Given this history and compared with the traditional use of bronze, Barrable’s titanium instrument represent a significant metallic milestone on the gong time line. Notes on his website address the bronze/ titanium comparison. “One (metal) is not better than the other; they simply resonate with a totally different harmonic signature. We’re no longer in the Bronze Age; we now live in the Space Age. Titanium is not only the primary metal that humanity is using for all reconstructive surgery, but it’s also being used to send people into outer space. As the public becomes more aware of the multiple uses and properties of this amazing metal, it demands its rightful place as the perfect metal to create sound therapy instruments that are as amazing to listen to as they are to look at and have a resonance with the accelerated vibration of the world that we now have to embrace. The CrysTanium Gong is an instrument that anybody can play and enjoy as long as you are willing to truly listen and play with your heart.” n

As Commercial Aerospace Loses Altitude, Titanium Industry Faces Difficult Questions in the Days of Covid-19 Pandemic By John Byrne

S

everal years ago during an address to the International Titanium Association (ITA) conference I said I wanted to write a book about my experiences in the titanium industry. It would be titled “Fear and Loathing on the Titanium Trail.” Capturing the complexities and characters in the titanium industry proved to be beyond my writing skills. And little did I know the craziest chapter was yet to play out… Covid-19. The emergence of Covid-19 has upended the global aerospace industry and, in turn, the titanium industry—a key part of the aerospace supply chain. Many questions exist: Where and when is the bottom? What does the recovery look like? What are the long-term impacts? What should be done moving forward? The answers, like any titanium forecast in aerospace, will be elusive and often wrong. The impact of Covid-19 on commercial airplanes production rate is far from stabilized. The original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) have announced new production rates that are 40-percent percent lower compared with fourth quarter, 2019, production rates. The natural cycle of increasing passenger traffic, increasing utilization and profitability at the airlines, resulting in increased demand for new airplanes has been significantly 22

TITANIUMTODAY

disrupted. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) now indicates it will be 2024 until air traffic recovers, meaning a 2025 recovery

As it confronts the fallout from the global pandemic, the titanium industry must focus on two basic questions. First: Where and how can it use its influence to gain assistance from federal authorities for the aerospace industry and for member companies in the ITA? Second: What will the titanium industry have to do internally to survive and enable success in the future? of production to pre-Covid-19 rates at the earliest. The Boeing 737 MAX grounding and the production delays and disruptions from the pandemic only add to the magnitude of the commercial challenge. While positive and hopeful news about vaccines come each day, there are no guarantees, especially

in terms of a quick cure, and must be discounted when planning. We are now seeing virus infections and spikes in the United States and other parts of the world. Additional travel restrictions and quarantines are being imposed. These factors point to a deeper and longer impact than currently predicted. A downside scenario should be the baseline that the titanium industry uses for operational and sales planning. The titanium industry is about melting, converting and fabricating metal for its customers of which the largest is commercial aerospace. Financial support is critical both short term and long term, but real demand for titanium is the key. The industry needs to help find a way with the federal government to accelerate the return of new demand for airplanes. While the titanium industry serves both new production and the aftermarket, the industry needs to push for a solution that prioritizes new planes over the aftermarket.

Facing Difficult Questions in the Days of Covid-19 (continued)

It’s true that, during the last 10 years the titanium industry has enjoyed a good run in the commercial aerospace market, but long lead times (50-plus weeks), large economic order quantities and inventory solutions are now albatrosses. Given the airplane rate cuts and inventory in the system, the OEM’s most likely do not need any additional material until the end of 2021, at the earliest. Other markets, like defense may soften the impact but not to any significant degree. The titanium industry needs to plan for any growth in the commercial aerospace demand to be consumed by inventory for at least the next two years. Suppliers and customers will have to work together to find the right balance. Transparency will need to be increased, forecasts will need to be improved, plans will need to be shared throughout the supply chain. Risks will have to be taken equally by the customers and suppliers. Everyone will need to work to get the demand supply equation rebalanced. Any effort to put any additional pound of titanium into the industry that is not needed is wasted effort and could stretch the challenge out for the entire industry. In addition, suppliers and customers will need to establish an operating level for key parts of the supply chain. What is the right amount of metal to melt, convert and fabricate to keep the key assets and capabilities in place? Companies will need to be commercially viable. The assets and capabilities cannot atrophy to the point where when the recovery comes the titanium industry is a constraint. How the fast recovery unfolds depends on many factors, but two important things to follow are inventory and increased demand for Boeing’s 787 and the Airbus A350. The aggregate industry inventory will need to reach a bottom and can only begin to grow once production rates are formally committed to increase. The demand for 787 and A350 planes will happen when international travel increases back to its pre-Covid-19 levels. Economic drivers and environmental issues may accelerate that demand. The market dynamics for those airplane programs will be a bellwether for the near-term future of the titanium industry. If those programs go down from current announced rates, then the crisis will deepen and stretch out.

24

TITANIUMTODAY

Every supplier in the industry should be focused during this time on how to develop the capability to “build to order.” Lower lead times and economic order quantities are critical. Improvements in quality and all drivers of cost will be needed through the downturn and cannot deteriorate when the recovery begins. Technology will need to continue to push forward. Improvements in operational automation and additive solutions will add value. The last area of focus must be leadership. There are very few leaders are left in the industry who have managed through previous downturns. Previous leaders had the experience of multiple downturns and disruptions, allowing for better and quicker decision making. One area of concern will be Airbus. Much to its credit, Airbus has never had to manage a significant production downturn through their supply chain. Covid-19 just changed that. The titanium industry will survive; it must survive. The commercial aerospace future depends on it. The commercial aerospace industry will recover. All the demand drivers will still be in place after the pandemic ends. The titanium trail is rough right now and will get rougher. We will all need some luck along the way, but it will be worth the journey. n Editor’s note: John Byrne, a former executive with Boeing Commercial Airplanes, currently serves as an advisor at Pasayten Advisors LLC, Auburn, WA. Industry Groups, Aerospace Analysts Come to Grips With Impact of ‘Worst Year in the History of Aviation’ By Michael C. Gabriele

T

he Covid-19 global pandemic has had a historically negative effect on the commercial aerospace industry. Numbers offer a stark outline of the financial fallout from the novel coronavirus in 2020, but an even darker story is the number of job losses and staff cuts at airlines, aerospace manufacturers, and companies in the global supply chain, including the titanium industry. What are the industry numbers? In June, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) issued a forecast that reported airlines are expected to lose $84 billion this year. In addition the IATA said 2020 revenue would likely fall to $419 billion compared with $838 billion last year. The IATA estimated that 7.5 million flights were cancelled from January to July. The IATA (www.iata.org), with headquarters in Montreal, is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing 290 airlines or 82 percent of total global air traffic. The IATA is led by Alexandre de Juniac, director general and chief executive officer, who offered a chilling perspective on the June forecast. “Financially, 2020 will go down as the worst year in the history of aviation,” de Juniac declared. He did consider a way forward for the commercial aerospace industry in 2021. “Provided there is not a second and more damaging wave of COVID-19, the worst

of the collapse in traffic is likely behind us. A key to the recovery is universal implementation of the re-start measures agreed through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to keep

shared insights and projections in a mid-year forecast on how Covice-19 is likely to affect commercial aircraft production in the near term. Robin Lineberger is Deloitte’s U.S. and global aerospace and defense leader and a principal with Deloitte Services LP. His career includes 35 years as a consultant to the aerospace and defense industry. Deloitte’s midyear forecast anticipated a prolonged recovery for commercial aerospace, while the defense sector remains resilient “According to our previous outlook, the commercial aerospace sector was expected to recuperate in 2020 after experiencing a decline in production in 2019. However, the COVID-19 crisis has significantly reduced both domestic and international passenger traffic, which, in turn, affected deliveries and order books,” the Deloitte report explained. “As a result, the U.S. commercial aerospace sector is preparing for a weak second half of the year.” “With global passenger traffic possibly taking as long as three years to recover to pre–COVID-19 levels, aircraft deliveries are likely to decline more than 50 percent in 2020 compared with 2018—the peak year for deliveries, significantly affecting the U.S. commercial aerospace sector. U.S. defense, however, has not had a major impact, as military projects remain a strategic priority and the nation continues to focus on strengthening its defense industrial

base (DIB). To ensure minimal business disruption amid the pandemic, the Department of Defense is using several measures, such as classifying the sector as a critical infrastructure sector and enhancing liquidity for defense contractors.” The Deloitte report weighed the impact of the global pandemic on commercial aerospace jet deliveries and order booking in 2020. “After experiencing solid growth in passenger traffic over the past decade, air travel has come to a near-standstill, with the COVID-19 pandemic substantially eroding passenger travel demand in just the first few months of 2020. While commercial air travel is down 90 percent globally from a year ago, airlines have taken out over 30 percent of their capacity as a result of the pandemic. In North America, the decline in passenger traffic in 2020 is projected to be slightly more than 50 percent from the previous year, in line with the impact on other regions.” “A prolonged decline in passenger demand is likely to result in fewer orders and deliveries for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in 2020, especially for long-haul aircraft, negatively affecting the U.S. commercial aerospace sector. In 2020, global commercial 28

aircraft deliveries are estimated to be in the range of 650–690 aircraft, a decline of more than 50 percent from 2018, the peak year for deliveries. Aircraft production rates in the United States are being reduced, as several airlines have already announced order cancellations and deferrals. The impact could also be seen on the extended commercial aerospace manufacturing supply chain (the titanium industry), especially on mid-to-lowertier suppliers, which may struggle due to the OEM rate reductions.” As for the U.S. defense aerospace sector, Deloitte observed a relatively stable business environment. “The U.S. defense sector is not expected to be significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, as military projects remain a strategic priority for the United States. Moreover, the United States continues to focus on strengthening its defense industrial base (DIB), with defense budgets reaching pre-sequestration levels. Although the rate of growth may decrease or flatten in 2020, the United States’ emphasis on firming up its military capabilities is expected to result in relative stability in the defense sector. The Department of Defense is also ensuring that the DIB remains resilient amid

the pandemic, with minimal disruption, especially for critical defense programs. However, the pandemic may lead to a temporary disruption in the defense sector supply chains, which are global and diversified in nature. As a consequence, minor near-term cost overruns and schedule delays could be expected.” Edmund S. Greenslet, the founder of ESG Aviation Services, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and the publisher of The Airline Monitor newsletter—a widely used source of information in the titanium industry—offered his assessment of the current commercial aerospace business environment in the executive summary of his June report. “There is a saying about forecasting that today does not seem like the silly thing it was meant to be. It goes like this: forecast frequently, but never about the future.” “Last year (in this newsletter) the key issue was the Boeing 737 MAX grounding and when would it be lifted,” Greenslet wrote. “Well, twelve months later we are still waiting and the nearest answer we have to the question of when is: soon.” The New York Times, in June, reported that Boeing received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to start test flights of its 737 MAX to demonstrate that it can fly safely with new flight control software. The MAX was grounded in March 2019 after a pair of fatal crashes. “If the flights are successful, it could still be months before the planes are deemed ready to fly again. If the FAA identifies further problems, Boeing may need to make additional changes.” Greenslet pointed out that, given the business difficulties associated with Covid-19, Boeing’s MAX is no longer the central issue facing the commercial aerospace industry. “Indeed, I suspect that many airlines might just as soon see it remain grounded for a while as they do not need the capacity or the financial costs of taking the deliveries. The impact of Covid-19 on the airlines cannot be overstated as it has taken us into territory we have never seen, and that leads us to our discussion of the state of, and outlook for, world traffic and airplane requirements.” Airline Monitor offered extensive models on the potential recovery of commercial aerospace. Greenslet compared the business downturn in 2020 to previous declines in the airline traffic. “Look at the record when world traffic declined (3.3 percent in 1991, 2.8 percent in 2001 and 1.2 percent in 2009). Then see how quickly traffic recovered (up 12.9 percent in 1992, 14.4 percent in 2004 and 9.3 percent in 2010). Now compare that to what 30

TITANIUMTODAY

we see this year with traffic down almost 44 percent (in 2020), then rebounding almost (projected) 53 percent in 2021. That looks like the same pattern as those earlier years, but there is a big difference. In the three previous declines the rebound took total traffic above what it was before the down year, but even after a (projected) 53-percent rise in total revenue passenger miles (RPMs) next year the world number is still about 13 percent below what it was in 2019. Then despite a healthy 7.7 percent increase (projected) in 2022, the world total remains 7 percent below last year; it would take another seven to eight percent growth year in 2023 to get back to the 2019 level. In this forecast model, Greenslet said he chose to be an optimist with double-digit growth in 2023. “This is not without precedent and serves to return the industry to its pre-virus level. However, what it does not do is make up for the growth lost over the years 2020 through 2024 as that latter year is still 14 percent below what we estimated in June 2019, and that in turn reduces the number of passenger aircraft in the world fleet by almost 4,000 airplanes. Covid-19 will, we believe, cast a long shadow as the forecast now projects 3,000 fewer deliveries for the years 2020 to 2040, and if there is no above-average growth year like we have in 2023 then that number of airplanes needed becomes even lower.” Separately, The New York Times, in a June 30 article, reported that Airbus announced would cut nearly 15,000 jobs across its global work force, which would be the largest downsizing in the company’s history. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, airlines are now planning for years of reduced passenger demand, and this means less need for new planes. Citing a 40 percent slump in commercial aircraft business activity and an “unprecedented crisis” facing the airline industry, Airbus said it would slash around 10 percent of its jobs worldwide. The Times reported that Guillaume Faury, Airbus chief executive officer, in a series of recent memos, warned it would be necessary to adapt to a “lasting decline” in the demand for airliners. The company said Tuesday that it didn’t expect air travel to return to previrus levels before 2023 and potentially not until 2025. “Airbus is facing the gravest crisis this industry has ever experienced,” Faury said in a statement. “We must ensure that we can sustain our enterprise and emerge from the crisis as a healthy, global aerospace leader, adjusting to the overwhelming challenges of our customers.” n

Novel Autoclave for Extracting Gold Ore Showcases Titanium Properties for a New Industrial Application By Michael C. Gabriele

C

oek Engineering, Geel Belgium, has produced a carbon steel explosion welded titanium-clad, industrial autoclave for Polymetal International PLC, which will be used for extracting gold ore. The unit, expected to be commissioned in early 2023, will operate at a facility in Amursk, Russia, and represents a new industrial application area for titanium and a new generation in the design of industrial autoclaves. Titanium Grade 17 was selected as the material of choice because of its superior chemical resistance, compared with refractory bricks, which are the typically used in autoclaves. The autoclave vessel has 32

TITANIUMTODAY

been designed to use highly corrosive chemicals (chlorides and fluorides) at high temperatures 240˚C (464˚F), with an operating pressure of more than 50 bar (725 psi), to extract the gold ore. The interior diameter of the autoclave is over 5 meters (16 feet) and the vessel is around 50 meters long (164 feet). Patrick Van Roy, chief sales officer for Group Coek, said Hatch Ltd., based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, provided the design and process conditions for the autoclave, while Coek manufactured the vessel and worked out the mechanical design. The spokesman would not reveal the projected annual

processing capacity for the autoclave and would not confirm the capital investment for the equipment. Several online news outlets reported the design and production of the autoclave represents a capital investment in excess of $430 million. He did say that the titanium Grade 17 used for the autoclave was sourced from Uniti Titanium, a joint venture of Allegheny Technologies Inc. and VSMPO-AVISMA Corp. NobelClad Europe GmbH, a global leader in cladding technology, and having a long-term close collaboration relationship with both Coek and Hatch in providing titanium clad plates for autoclaves

(i.e. high pressure acid leach [HPAL] for nickel), was selected to supply quality Detaclad™ explosion welding technology from their operations in Liebenscheid, Germany, for this first titanium-clad pressure oxidation (POX) Autoclave. NobelClad supplied approximately 1,000 tons of quality explosion welded plates. This alone was a transport and logistics challenge and required a coordinated supply chain approach. All plates were produced and tested in accordance to the stringent project specification, such as automatic ultrasonic scanning, mechanical tests (shear and tensile), including flatness, and stress relief heat treatment. These nextgeneration vessels represent a major advancement for the gold processing industry, which currently operates approximately 30 brick-lined POX autoclaves around the world. “Looking back on this project I am proud of the global team effort as well as the partnership with leading engineering and fabricating players in this exciting and challenging industry,” Antoine Nobili, NobelClad president, said. When asked to offer insights regarding the selection of titanium for the autoclave, Van Roy explained that the primary issue is long-term corrosion resistance for extracting the gold ore. “There is no corrosion on the titanium lining,” he said. “The main issue that can influence the lifetime of such equipment is metal erosion (of the autoclave’s interior). Given the fact that we have put a lot of effort into our design, to avoid erosion as much as possible, the expected life time of this equipment can be long as 20 years, with a limited requirement on maintenance and downtime as compared with brick-lined autoclaves.” He continued by citing long-term maintenance cost-saving advantages through the use of titanium. “Given the experience on erosion issues for previous nickel extraction autoclaves, it was decided to use full

recessed cover strip design on all bottom parts of the reactor. And in order to increase maximum safety, also the cladding thickness was increased to the maximum that can be cladded without too many risks. This first of a kind autoclave for the gold mining industry is using some safety margin from a design perspective, which will be optimized in the future based on the feedback during operation. We also learned that from a cost point of view, the overall price is very much depending on the palladium price (key alloy element for titanium Grade 17), which is very much fluctuating in the last six months.” According to Coek, new orders from Polymetal for similar equipment are expected. Coek also indicated they are involved in discussions with a separate Russian gold mining company for another titanium-lined autoclave. However, Van Roy was cautious not to overplay the notion that this represents a major new trend in the design and production of autoclaves and the use of titanium—at least for now. He did acknowledge that titanium-clad autoclaves have gained attention in the gold mining industry. He also cited safety advantages and cost efficiencies as part of the interest in these autoclaves. “The substantial advantage of a much longer cycle time (no regular shutdowns to be scheduled to do maintenance on the brick lining), faster start-ups and quicker cool downs (compared to brick-lined autoclaves), and the fact that you gain a lot in volume, makes the alternative of titanium cladding much more cost efficient.” It’s also possible that, based on the success of the Polymetal operation, titanium-lined autoclaves might gain currency in other areas of metal mining and extraction. Autoclaves also are used for other industrial applications involving corrosive production environments and these applications can benefit from the reliability of titanium-clad construction. n

They have had 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. After graduating from college, Mr. Perryman served his country in the Army, flying helicopters during the Korean War. Mr. Perryman continued his passion for aviation changing to fixed wing aircraft which he piloted until the age of 77. He entered the titanium industry in 1953 with Mallory-Sharon Inc., the predecessor of RTI International. Mr. Perryman’s main function at that time was researching and developing the melting techniques of titanium and titanium alloys utilizing electron beam melting and vacuum arc remelting to create ingots suitable for further processing into wrought products. In 1969, Mr. Perryman transitioned from melting into high value-added titanium products and has remained in that area ever since. In 1970 Jim, Rose and the family moved to Pittsburgh and became dedicated members of the St. Thomas More parish. In 1988, along with Rose, he founded Perryman Company, a global leader of titanium wire and bar products. Mr. Perryman was a lead force in transitioning Perryman from a finishing operation into an integrated hot working facility. When Perryman Company installed melting operations utilizing electron beam and vacuum arc remelting in 2007, Mr. Perryman came full circle and returned to his melting roots. 36
