RABBITS (continued): • Although the average rabbit is about the size of a cat, (13 to 20 inches [34-50 cm] in length and 2.4 to 5.5 lbs. [1.1 – 2.5 kg]), the checkered giant can weigh over 11 lbs. (5 kg), the Flemish giant more than 13 lbs. (5.9 kg), and the giant chinchilla rabbit between 12 and 16 lbs. (5.4 to 7.2 kg). The record for the world’s longest rabbit belongs to Darius, a Flemish giant who measures 4 feet, 3 inches (129 cm) and weighs about 50 lbs. (22.7 kg). Darius is also considered the world’s most valuable rabbit, is insured for $1.6 million, and has his own personal bodyguard. The owner claims the rabbit thinks he is a dog! • The smallest species is the pygmy rabbit, a tiny little creature just 8 inches (20 cm) long, weighing less than a pound (500 grams). Their home is in the West, in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and northeastern California, where much of their diet is sagebrush. • Rabbits are herbivores, dining on plants only, including grasses, clover, and frequently vegetables from your garden, such as carrots, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. They might also eat fruits, seeds, roots, buds, and tree bark. They can chew an unbelievable 120 times per minute. They have 28 teeth to accomplish this purpose, teeth that never stop growing throughout the rabbit’s entire life! Continual gnawing of their food wears the teeth down, and an annual growth of 3 to 5 inches (7.6 to 12.7 cm) is not unusual. • Because rabbits are the prey of several animals, they are always keeping an eye out for predators, such as coyotes and foxes. If danger is perceived, they warn their fellow bunnies by thumping their hind legs before heading for the safety of their burrow. Rabbits have highly-developed hearing, and they can hear that thumping from far away. They dodge their predators by running in a zigzag pattern at speeds approaching 18 mph (29 km/h).

Safely Color Pet’s Hair

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I really would like to color my dog’s hair. “Sheera” is an all-white poodle mix, and when she’s groomed and coiffed she looks better than purebred poodles. (She’s beautiful to me even when her coat is all grown out and she needs a bath, of course!) However, I’ve seen news reports that dyeing a dog’s coat could be dangerous. Can you tell me if it’s safe? -- Jenna H. in San Diego

DEAR JENNA: Using hair dye made for humans is very dangerous for all pets. Chemicals in hair dye can be life threatening, as a Florida pet owner found out earlier this year. Not only can the pets’ skin react to the chemicals, but dogs and cats tend to lick at any area that irritates them, and then they ingest the dye. It may be possible to dye Sheera’s hair using

food coloring. Also, special semi-permanent hair dyes and sprays for pets are available at many pet stores, as are special chalks that can be rubbed onto their fur. These wash off in one or two shampoos. Like any topical treatment, however, your dog could have a reaction to any of these products, even though they’re listed as nontoxic. Further, some animal advocates feel that dyeing a pet’s fur can be stressful for them. If Sheera isn’t used to the process, she certainly could get upset and stressed out. If she has a tough time at the groomer’s, she probably won’t like the dyeing process either. Remember, Sheera is a beautiful dog even without that funky color. If she isn’t bothered at all by the process or the look of her newly colored fur, that’s great. But give it a lot of thought. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. ONE OF OUR QUALITY CUSTOM BUILT HOMES!

It was not until the 16th century that the game was called “tennis” and players used a racquet. By the 1960s, important tennis matches were open to both amateurs and professionals, and winning players got a large sum of money as a prize. But there are many collectibles from early tennis events as well as equipment from the past 100 years. Since about 1870, some steins, vases, plates and even figurines pictured players and other tennis scenes. Old balls and racquets, even appropriate tennis clothing, are wanted. One of the most unusual tennis items sold recently is a pre-1950s tennisracquet weather vane. It was made of copper and included copper-wire racquet strings. The racquet was attached to a mounting rod with a tennis-ball top. The weather vane sold at a James Julia auction for $1,815. It probably will be installed near a tennis court. *** Q: I have a tiny bisque doll, which is about four inches tall. It has molded hair, painted brown eyes and rope joints. For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 RABBITS (continued): • Do you know your rabbit terminology? Baby rabbits are known as kits or kittens. Males are bucks and females are does. The original name for babies was “rabbit,” with adults being called “coneys.” “Bunny” doesn’t refer to a baby rabbit, it’s just a term of affection – there’s no difference between a bunny and a rabbit. However, a rabbit and a hare are not the same. Hares are larger and faster, and have longer ears and feet than rabbits. They are born covered with hair, with their eyes open, and they can run within just a few minutes of birth. • Have you ever seen a rabbit jump in the air, turning and twisting its body? That activity is known as a “binky,” and it simply means the rabbit is happy! • The rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and includes individuals born in 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, and 2011. For those born in a rabbit year, lucky colors are red, pink, purple, and blue, while lucky numbers are 3, 4, and 6. According to Chinese lore, rabbits are kind, gentle people, full of love. They are quiet, patient, skillful, compassionate people who treat others politely, but have a tendency to be melancholy. During rabbit years, it’s believed by many that rabbits themselves should be more careful about all aspects of their lives. The next Rabbit year will be 2023. • For those who choose to dine on rabbit meat, it has several benefits. It’s all white meat, and contains the least amount of fat among other meats, with half the calories of pork. Its sodium content is less than other meats, and it’s almost cholesterol-free.

FOOD OF THE WEEK: BAGELS

Tidbits invites you to bite into some of these facts about one of our favorite breads, the bagel. • Bagels have their origins in the Jewish communities of Poland. The word is derived from the Yiddish word beygal, which translates “ring” or “bracelet.” The word was first documented in writing in 1610 in the Community Regulations of Krakow, Poland, which decreed that a bagel should be given as a gift to all women in childbirth. Its round shape was a symbol of long life, and believed to bring good luck. • Another version of the bagel’s origins states that bagels were invented by a Viennese baker in 1683. Legend has it that the baker was paying tribute to Poland’s King Jan Sobieski, who had led Austrian and Polish troops in defense from invading Turkish armies. Because the king was a renowned horseman, the baker shaped dough into a shape resembling the king’s stirrup, which translated beugel in German. • Traditional bagels are shaped by hand from a long thin piece of dough, round with a hole in the middle. The dough is then allowed to rise for a short time, then put into vigorously boiling water briefly before baking. The boiling water might contain sugar, honey, or barley malt syrup for a different flavor. Bagels might also be brushed with sugar water or egg before baking to create a glossy crust. They might also be dipped in poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion, or salt before baking. • The hole in the center serves a couple of purposes. It ensures that the bread boils and bakes more evenly. It also makes for an easier way to transport and display the bagels, enabling them to be threaded onto string or wooden dowels.

For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 BAGELS (continued): • Immigrant Polish Jews brought bagels to North America, and their recipes were a closely guarded secret. In 1907, the International Bagel Bakers Union was founded in New York City, monopolizing production since only the sons of union members were allowed in as apprentices. • In 1927, Polish baker Harry Lender established the first bagel factory outside New York City, settling in New Haven, Connecticut. In the 1950s, Lender’s son Murray revolutionized the production and distribution of bagels by developing frozen bagels, and supplying to supermarkets. Murray also introduced presliced bagels. • In the early 1960s, inventor Dan Thompson devised the first commercial bagel-making machine. Dan’s father, a Winnipeg, Canada bakery owner, had been working on a machine for decades without success. With Dan’s machine, 200 to 400 bagels could be produced per hour, and traditional handshaped bagels quickly disappeared. • In recent years, steam bagels have been introduced. They are not boiled, but rather baked in an oven with a steam injection system. The procedure requires less labor with the elimination of the boiling stage. The bagel is fluffier, softer, and less chewy than the traditional boiled bagel. • North America has primarily two types of traditional bagels – Montreal-style or New York-style. The Montreal is a little smaller, and has no salt. Because it is boiled in honeysweetened water, it has a sweeter taste. The bagels are baked in wood-fired ovens, resulting in a crunchier product. The New York bagel contains salt and malt, is boiled in plain water, and baked in a standard oven, resulting in a puffier bread with a moist crust. In contrast, Chicago-style bagels are steambaked.

Travel to Key West, Florida, this month and you can participate in or observe Hemingway Look-Alike Days. • July 19 -22 has been designated for this commemoration, near the birthday of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway. Famous for The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea, and a host of other works, Hemingway arrived in Key West in 1928, and set out to find a home. • Hemingway and his wife settled on a Spanish Colonial home built in 1851 and set about remodeling. The home’s pool was the first in-ground pool in Key West, the only one within 100 miles, and built at the astounding cost of $20,000 in 1938. Hemingway joked that the cost took the last penny he had, and he took a penny from his pocket and pressed it into the wet cement, where it can still be seen embedded in the surrounding patio. The pool, 60 feet (18.3 m) long, had a deep end of 10 feet (3 m), and had a capacity of 80,784 gallons. • Hemingway lived and wrote in Key West for more than 10 years. His novel A Farewell to Arms was written in Key West and told the story of an American lieutenant serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian army during World War I. Hemingway himself enlisted in the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps, serving in Italy, where he was wounded in 1918, and drew much of the book from his own World War I experiences. • One of the very few Hemingway novels set in the United States was 1937’s To Have and Have Not, a story that used Key West as its setting and told the story of a local fishing boat captain caught up in running black market contraband back and forth to Cuba.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com HEMINGWAY DAYS (continued): • One of Hemingway’s favorite hangouts during the 1930s was Key West’s Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the local corner tavern. It’s here that the Papa Hemingway Look-Alike Contest began 38 years ago. Gray-bearded men travel from around the world to participate in the challenge, with many spending their time practicing sounding, moving, and acting like the noted author. Many dress in a fisherman’s knit cable turtleneck sweater similar to one worn by Hemingway in photos. More than 160 Hemingway hopefuls gathered last year to compete for the trophy. • Death in the Afternoon was also penned during Hemingway’s time in Key West, a nonfiction collection of stories about the history of the Spanish tradition of bullfighting. He had become fascinated with the subject after attending the Pamplona Fiesta in 1925 and seeing the Running of the Bulls. Key West’s Hemingway Days features its own version of the festival with the look-alikes pushing lifesize fake bulls on wheels through the streets of the community. • The contest has a higher purpose than just looking like Hemingway. In conjunction with the event, a scholarship program was founded to aid students attending Florida Keys Community College. • The 2016 winner of the look-alike contest was actually named Dave Hemingway, although the North Carolina resident said he was no relation to the author. In his words, “I think it’s about time that Hemingway won a Hemingway look-alike contest.” Another noted competitor is southern chef Paula Deen’s husband, who placed in the top five for two consecutive years.

By Keith Roach, M. D,

Making an Informed Health Decision DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71. I’m overweight at 300 pounds and have had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years. I haven’t had any chest pain or heart problems, but a recent nuclear stress test led my doctor to suspect buildup in one of my arteries, and he wants to do a cardiac catheterization. I do not want to do this, partly because I feel that once you let doctors start messing with your body, you will only experience more problems (like a stent or something) and your life will never be the same. I don’t want to offend the cardiologist, but I really do not want to do this. Am I completely wrong? -- P.R. ANSWER: Making a decision after knowing all the pertinent information isn’t wrong, even if it isn’t the decision the doctor recommends. I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications. If you do have blockages, you have a choice of medical treatment (such as a statin, beta blocker and aspirin), catheter treatment (such as angioplasty with or without a stent) and surgical treatment. Knowing more about the location and severity of any blockage can allow you to make a more informed decision about what treatment is better. Stents and surgery would be less commonly used in someone without symptoms, unless the blockage were very severe or in a critical artery. It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. In addition to the medications I mentioned, taking excellent care of your diabetes, losing some weight, making sure your diet is proper for someone with suspected heart disease, and participating in a monitored exercise program all can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In fact, these are important even if you do get a stent or surgery. I don’t think your cardiologist will be offended if you can give him your reasons for declining an angiogram, even though he and I are recommending it in order to provide the best information to decide whether further intervention is necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Since turmeric is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, would it be beneficial to drink a cup of tea made with it? Especially for something like ulcerative colitis? -- J.B. ANSWER: Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, releases two compounds (TNF-alpha and nitric oxide) that can reduce inflammation. In ulcerative colitis, one study showed that there were fewer exacerbations in people who took curcumin along with their usual medications for U.C., compared with those taking a placebo. It holds some promise but is by no means a cure. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * “I moved to a much smaller house and have very little storage, so now everything I keep must be necessary. I had several banker’s boxes of old papers that I had been storing for years. I still think there’s a chance I’d need to access the information in them, but I didn’t want to devote a lot storage space to boxes of documents. I bought a small scanner that you feed paper into, and I have used it to scan in all my papers. * It was pop art icon Andy Warhol who made the following sage observation: “It’s the movies that have really been running things in America since they were invented. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look when you feel about it.” * Those who study such things say that by the year 2020, more data will be created in a single hour than had been created in the entire world over the 30,000 years leading up to the 21st century. * A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -- she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time. * When the Coca-Cola Company first started marketing its product in China, the advertisements used Chinese symbols to spell out the brand’s name phonetically. It was only after the ads had been published that the marketers learned that those symbols spelled out the phrase “bite the wax tadpole.” * Earthquakes occur at a rate of about one every minute around the world. About eight of those each year are considered to be major, registering above 7.0 on the Richter Scale. * Velcro came to market in 1957, after a Swiss inventor named George De Mestral spent nearly 10 years developing the idea. His inspiration came to him in 1948 on a hike, when he had difficulty removing tenacious little burrs from his clothes. He reasoned that if he could create synthetic burrs, they could be used as fasteners.

NO NEWS... JUST FUN, FACTS AND TRIVIA! Mastered Cellphone? Step Up to Tablet

What do you buy after you have your cellphone but you’re not ready for a full-size computer? Chances are a tablet would be a good next step. Tablets are like oversized cellphones in their capabilities, only better. With tablets you can check mail, watch videos, make a grocery list, share pictures, check the weather, play games and look around the Internet. Some tablets have drawing capabilities with a special pen. If you have Wi-Fi in your house, a tablet can connect to it without incurring additional fees to connect to the phone carrier. Tablets are portable, easier to tote around. If you want to take your tablet out to lunch and read online news while you eat, assuming the restaurant has Wi-Fi, you can do that. If you have a reading app for books you’ve downloaded, you don’t even need the Wi-Fi. Chances are a tablet won’t come with a keyboard, unless you get one fancy enough to attach to a Bluetooth keyboard. Otherwise you’ll type right on the screen. You won’t need a mouse. How to pick out a tablet: * Try to sample different types in stores, such as Apple iPads and Android, and the various sizes. The 9.7- to 10.1-inch display sizes are a good place to start; the 12-inch models can be heavy. * Read the reviews online. You’ll care about battery life, weight, price and ease of typing. Don’t forget to add in the cost of any extra goodies you want, like the drawing pen if your tablet can use it, and a new case. (I recommend the Speck Balance Folio, for the sturdiness and the locking cover that protects the glass front. See them at www.speckproducts.com.) If you enjoy playing music, investigate the cost of Bluetooth speakers. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

More Protections for Home Loans One of our veterans benefits is help with buying a home. The Department of Veterans Affairs has a new policy that protects veterans from predatory lenders when we refinance loans. The lending industry has some bad actors who pull scams on home buyers, adding extra interest, fees and multiple expenses, and more. The new policy calls a halt to all that, adding to the list of protections we already have when buying a home with a VA guaranteed loan. For example, lenders must provide us with a comparison of what we already have and what we propose to get in a refinance. This needs to include, among other things, a comparison of the monthly payments so we can see what we actually will save. If you have a fixed rate and are refinancing for another fixed rate, that rate must be at least 0.50 less. If you have a fixed rate and are refinancing for an adjustable rate, that rate must be at least 2.00 less. Applications must be dated on or after May 25, 2018, for the new policy to apply. To read the rest of the changes, go online to www. benefits.va.gov. Modifications to homes for disabled veterans are available for certain service-connected disabilities. The VA will help by giving up to $81,000 for those modifications under Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grants. To learn more, go online to www.va.gov and search for “adapted housing grants.” Another type of grant, Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant, can help in other ways, with a $16,217 cap. If a veteran needs a ramp or widened doorways, these grants can help. But a heads up -- SAH grants are limited to 30 veterans a year, and all the money is gone for fiscal 2018. For next year, check eligibility requirements and apply early. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
