This week, Tidbits heads into space to explore the particulars of this television program, which premiered in 1966. • Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, had been a writer for a 1960s series about the Old West, and visualized a Western in outer space, what he called “Wagon Train to the stars.” He was inspired by Horatio Hornblower novels about a skilled naval seaman, as well Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. STAR TREK (continued): • NBC executives rejected the first Star Trek pilot, but because they still liked the show’s concept, paid for a second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Captain Kirk was introduced, played by a 35-year-old Canadian actor named William Shatner, whose name would become synonymous with Star Trek. The second pilot also introduced Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and helmsman Sulu. • The name Sulu does not have Japanese origins, but was conceived from Roddenberry’s observation of the Sulu Sea on a map. This body of water touches the shores of all Asian countries. Sulu’s character, played by George Takei, (who appeared in 52 episodes) has no first name in the original series, but a 1981 Star Trek novel bestows the first name of Hikaru. • Leonard Nimoy appeared in more episodes than any other character. Playing the Vulcan Mr. Spock, he was cast in all 79 episodes and the original first pilot. Shatner only starred in the 79 regular episodes. • The character of Russian-born navigator Pavel Chekov was introduced in the series’ second season. Walter Koenig appeared in 36 episodes from 1967 to 1969. • Roddenberry used the series to convey statements about morality, sexism, racism, nationalism, violence, and global war. He began by hiring a racially diverse crew, and went on to give the show a strong anti-war message, implications about nuclear war, and other political and social issues. Star Trek gained notoriety as the first American TV show to feature an interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols.

Jealousy Disrupts Doggie Households

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two dogs, “Jake” and “Albie,” are normally real sweethearts. But over the past few months they have been increasingly nasty to one another. Jake is five years older than Albie, who the shelter told me is about four years old. If Albie sees Jake lying in the sunny corner of the kitchen, he growls and barks. Jake will growl and bark right back. Last week they came very close to fighting. What can I do to stop this once and for all? -- Gerry in Las Cruces, New Mexico DEAR GERRY: Dust off your dog-training manual -- you’re going to need it. Basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” quiet” and “leave it” are very helpful in defusing a situation between two housemate dogs. Sometimes dogs exhibit jealous behavior for

no apparent reason; other times something has changed in the household, and therefore the overall dynamic -- a new roommate, new pet or new baby; shifting the furniture around; or even decorating for the holidays. Whatever the cause, you must re-establish order. Your dogs need to know that no matter what else has changed, you’re still head of the house. Make sure that you show no favoritism. When it’s time for treats, both dogs get treats (and only if they’re both sitting calmly). When one is curled up in his doggie bed, the other should be, too. Take them for longer walks to burn off more energy, and work with them on basic commands. What if this doesn’t stop their behavior? You will need to separate them into different rooms if a verbal “leave it” command doesn’t work. If their behavior worsens, contact a pet trainer. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com STAR TREK (continued):

• Due to Mr. Spock’s green Vulcan blood, Nimoy’s make-up had a faint greenish tinge to it, but because the formula was handmixed, the amount of green occasionally varied. Rodenberry’s original idea was for Spock’s skin to be red, which would have created many additional hours of makeup time for Nimoy. When an early screen test showed that red appeared as black on 1960s black-and-white TV’s, the notion was scrapped. • The first regular episode aired on September 8, 1966, (two days earlier in Canada), and the last aired on June 3, 1969. In the beginning, ratings were high, but had dropped to 52nd out of 94 by the end of the first season. NBC was ready to cancel the show partway through the second season, but an extraordinary letter-writing campaign was begun, petitioning NBC to keep it. Hundreds of thousands of letters were written to the network (including one from then-New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller) in an attempt to save the beloved sci-fi series. Picketers marched in front of NBC’s Burbank studios in support. But despite the valiant efforts, NBC cancelled Star Trek after the third season. • StarTrek’s original time slot was Thursday evening, but with the flagging ratings, NBC moved it from its primetime position to 10 PM on Friday night, known as “the Friday night death slot,” an hour undesirable for its younger audience, contributing to an even greater dip in ratings and its cancellation. • Three months after its cancellation, the series began reruns, and in its syndication, it finally became successful. In the 1970s, it was broadcast in 150 domestic markets and 60 international ones. The Associated Press called it “the show that won’t die.”

This is an Indian-style beaded cradle, but it holds a European doll. It was made about 1900 at an Indian boarding school and sold for $11,070.

Indian Toy Cradle Many American Indian tribes almost lost their culture by the 1960s because of 19th- and early 20th-century U.S government rules. American Indians could be removed from their land, resettled on reservations and even have their children sent to special boarding schools to be taught a new way of life. The children were punished if they continued to practice their ceremonies or speak their native language. Children from the Potawatomi tribe went to either a boys’ or girls’ boarding school, where they learned English and a trade. The American Indian Religious Freedom Act passed in the 1970s led to the end of the boarding schools and the beginning of efforts to bring back the Indian culture. A recent auction sold a toy Indian cradle decorated with beads and silver buttons, but holding a European porcelain-headed doll. It was made by Millie R. Hall, who lived at a Potawatomi boarding school in 1900, an important historic source for a handmade doll. It sold for $11,070. *** Q: I’d like to know the value of a violin that is about 100 years old. The inscription inside reads “Copy of Antonius Stradivarius, made in Czechoslovakia.” What is it worth? A: Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737) made violins, violas, cellos and other stringed instruments at his workshop in Cremona, Italy. Fewer than 600 of the original Stradivarius violins still are in existence, and they sell for several million dollars each. Thousands of copies have been made and don’t sell for high

prices. Your violin was made after 1918, when Czechoslovakia was created. Recently, a violin like yours that included the case sold for $57. *** Q: I have a brass tea set that has sat unused for many years. Should I polish it or leave the natural patina? A: You should polish your brass tea set with a commercial brass polish. If it’s heavily tarnished or corroded, take it to a professional. Some brass has been lacquered to prevent tarnish and should not be polished. Polishing damages the lacquer. If the lacquer is peeling, you should go to a professional restorer. ***

STAR TREK (continued): The first Star Trek convention was held in January of 1972 in New York City. A few hundred fans were anticipated, but several thousand enthusiasts showed up. Four years later there were upwards of 250 Star Trek clubs with 25 organized conventions that hosted thousands of Trekkies. A 1975 Chicago convention marked the first time that the entire cast reunited, an event attended by more than 16,000 fans. Having achieved fame as Captain Kirk, after the cancellation of the series in 1969, William Shatner went through tough times finding work during the early 1970s. With no new roles coming his way and very little money, the actor lost his home and lived in a camper on the back of a truck until a few minor roles came his way, which blossomed into higherpaying ones. Although a popular catchphrase of the series is “Beam me up, Scotty,” in actuality, Captain Kirk never said that phrase to his Lieutenant Commander in any episode. However, other quotes are close – “Scotty, beam us up, “ “Beam me up,” “Scotty, beam me up,” and “Beam them out of there, Scotty.” Although a specific city was never mentioned during the series, it was established that Captain Kirk was born in the state of Iowa. A member of the Riverside, Iowa, City Council brought forth a motion that the community should proclaim itself the future birthplace of James T. Kirk. The council wrote to Gene Roddenberry in 1985 seeking permission for the honor, and Roddenberry agreed. Many Star Trek-related attractions and events can be found there and the community hosts an annual Trek Festival every June. Trekkies can view a replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise there, although the ship has been dubbed the U.S.S. Riverside.

FOOD OF THE WEEK: CAVIAR The word “caviar” conjures up images of luxury and extravagance. This week, Tidbits directs its attention to this fishy delicacy! • The word “caviar” has its origins in the Persian word khavyar, meaning “egg.” And indeed, caviar is eggs, those of one of 26 species of the sturgeon. Russian fishermen were already in the business of catching sturgeon in the 12th century, having recognized them as the most valuable. In the 15th century, caviar was served in the royal courts of Europe and the imperial court of Russia. During the Middle Ages, many countries had laws requiring the best caviar to be reserved only for royalty. • The finest caviar comes from the Caspian Sea, a body of water bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Three varieties of sturgeon are the source of the best caviar, the Beluga, the Sevruga, and the Osetra. Beluga has the largest eggs, from a fish that may weigh up to 2,000 lbs. (907 kg), although the typical Beluga is around 400 lbs. (181 kg). The female doesn’t bear eggs until she is about 25 years old, and her lifespan can be up to 150 years. The smaller Sevruga sturgeon usually weigh in at less than 50 lbs. (22.7 kg). Not all caviar resembles shiny black pearls. The Osetra produces a rare golden caviar. Premium caviar is from older, larger eggs, and lighter in color. Lower quality is darker and has a milder, less fishy flavor. Caviar can only be called that if it comes from a sturgeon. All other salted fish eggs, such as those from salmon, trout, or paddlefish, are referred to as roe. • Caviar’s taste is affected by its environment, including the salinity of the water where the sturgeon swims to the type of algae eaten by the fish.

CAVIAR (continued): The first American caviar business was founded by 1873 by Henry Schacht, who used sturgeon from the Delaware River. The delicacy became so popular that U.S. saloons served it free, since its saltiness promoted more drinking. But by 1910, American waters had been nearly depleted of sturgeon due to over-fishing, and production ceased, with caviar becoming a luxury.

Because all wild sturgeon is on the endangered list, it is illegal to catch them in the wild. Nearly all of caviar available in the U.S. today is farm-raised. • In centuries past, the fish had to be killed to harvest the eggs, but a leading marine biologist has developed a system whereby the eggs are gently massaged from the female sturgeon, causing no harm to the fish. The eggs are then passed through a fine mesh to remove membranes and fatty tissue. • Caviar is never to be served with silver utensils, as metal spoons give the eggs a nasty metallic flavor. Serving spoons should always be made of mother of pearl, glass, or bone. • Those folks who make caviar are known as Ikrjanschik. The process is so specialized that a 10 to 15 year apprenticeship is required. Another unusual word, malossol, applies to caviar that has very little salt. • The world’s most expensive caviar comes from the eggs of a rare albino Iranian beluga, 60 to 100 years old. The Russians gave it the name Almas, which means “diamond” in Russian. While most caviar is black, Almas is a rare white type, and is packaged in a round, 24-karat gold box at a price of more than $25,000 for a 2.2-lb. (1 kilo) box. • Caviar isn’t just a flavorful appetizer. It has more minerals and nutrients than any other protein. Just one spoonful supplies the daily requirement of Vitamin B12. It’s also rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, Omega-3’s, Vitamins B2 and D, and selenium.

We get to see how it changes her and her relationship with her friends, and how she changes the actors she works with because of her “normalness.” Can you tell me what that was called and if/when it will be back? -Rhiannon G., via email A: You’re thinking of “Famous in Love,” which airs on Freeform. I’ve also been waiting for word on its return, and I just heard that it will be back for its second season on Wednesday, April 4, at 8 p.m. ET. There’s time to catch up before the premiere, either on Netflix or On Demand, which I highly recommend because this is a fun, enticing and completely bingeable series.

Based on the novel by Rebecca Serle, the show follows ordinary college student Paige (played by Bella Thorne) -- who got her big break after auditioning for the starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster -- and her friends and co-stars as they try to navigate the bumpy waters of stardom and fame. The show also stars Carter Jenkins, Charlie DePew, Georgie Flores, Niki Koss, Pepi Sonuga, Keith Powers and Perrey Reeves. *** Q: I remember you had written some time ago that “Timeless” had been canceled, but then, in a rarity, was uncanceled by NBC. I keep looking for its premiere but haven’t seen anything about it. -- Margaret H., Madison, Wisconsin A: Don’t worry: The powers-that-be at NBC have not gone back on their word to renew “Timeless,” the exciting time-travel fantasy series that stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett and Goran Visnjic. It makes its season-two premiere on Sunday, March 11, at 10/9c. I’m so glad the series didn’t end with the massive cliffhanger, where we learned that Lucy’s mom is Rittenhouse, Flynn has been arrested and thinks Lucy set him up, and Emma has stolen the time-travel mothership. Here’s some scoop about this season. The first episode has Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus traveling back to World War I, where a new character is introduced: Nicolas Keynes playing an injured American soldier who “seems helpless at first but is more formidable than he seems,” according to producers. This season also will visit the Salem Witch Trials (be careful, Lucy!) and Hollywood in the 1940s. *** Q: Is it true that there’s a sequel to “March of the Penguins”? -- Bobbie F., via email A: It’s true! Premiering exclusively March 23 on Hulu, the second installment of the Oscar-winning documentary offers the tale of a father and son as they embark on their first journey together and overcome unimaginable challenges along the way. Like the original film, “March of the Penguins 2: The Next Step” is narrated by Morgan Freeman and promises to continue to tug on the heartstrings. Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties TREKKIE TRIVIA • Prior to his career in the entertainment industry, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was an employee of the LAPD’s Public Relations Department. It was here that he met a police officer named Wilbur Clingan. Years later, in a 1967 episode of Star Trek, the extraterrestrial warriors named the Klingons were introduced, named after Roddenberry’s former co-worker. • The character of Mr. Spock as we know him was nearly ditched early on. Network executives were nervous that his pointed ears and eyebrows were somewhat Satanic-looking, which could be offensive to some viewers. Roddenberry was frequently told to “drop the Martian,” and Spock’s ears and eyebrows were airbrushed out by the art department in publicity photos sent to network affiliates. But Roddenberry prevailed and Spock became the show’s most popular character. • The set designers for Star Trek drew inspiration from many of the futuristic designs of buildings and pavilions at the 1964 New York City World’s Fair. • The hand gesture known as the Vulcan salute features the palm forward, thumb extended, and a space between the middle and ring fingers. In 1968, the New York Times described the greeting as a “double-fingered version of Churchill’s victory sign. The salute was created by Leonard Nimoy based on the Priestly Blessing performed by Jewish orthodox priests, using both hands to represent the Hebrew letter Shin, which stands for El Shaddai, or “Almighty God.” The salute was first used in 1967 in the opening episode of season two.

TREKKIE TRIVIA (continued): Can you translate “dif-tor heh smusma”? This is a phrase from the Vulcan language, a spoken blessing to accompany the Vulcan salute. It means “Live long and prosper” and was Spock’s farewell remark. The phrase was ranked #5 in TV Guide’s list of “TV’s 20 Top Catchphrases.” It is customary to reply, “Peace and long life.” Mr. Spock did have a last name, but it wasn’t spoken about until a 1967 episode, when he revealed that his surname was unpronounceable for non-Vulcans. William Shatner has written three books about his sci-fi series experience: Star Trek Memories, Star Trek Movie Memories, and Leonard. In his writings, Shatner relates that Leonard Nimoy received the most fan mail from viewers, and Shatner admits he was both surprised and jealous of the fact. However, in real-life, the pair became close friends. Leonard Nimoy was the only actor in the series to be nominated for an Emmy Award. He received nominations for each of the series’ three seasons. Nimoy was the son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants. In addition to the original series, there was a Star Trek animated series, which aired from 1973 – 1974, 22 episodes. Nearly all of the original cast voiced their characters. Five spin-off televisions series and 13 feature films were later added to the Star Trek legacy. There was also a themed attraction in Las Vegas from 1998 to 2008. Star Trek fans can visit the 11-foot (3.35-m) studio model of the U.S. S. Enterprise at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

By Keith Roach, M. D,

People Really Are Allergic to Cold

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Whenever someone is ill with most diseases, they are usually prescribed a drug or a medicine, or a pharmaceutical product. Why is it that cancer patients are treated with “chemo,” or “chemotherapy,” rather than one of the above? Is there a difference, or is it just semantics? Nobody I’ve asked seems to have an answer. -- D.G. ANSWER: To be honest, I was confused too, until medical school, where I learned that “chemotherapy” is just another word for a drug or medicine intended to treat a condition. We just normally reserve the term for drugs used to treat cancer. Although we tend to think of the side effects of chemotherapy as horrific, and some certainly are the most toxic substances we ever use, they vary widely in how well they are tolerated. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In August I had open repair of my right rotator cuff. I was told it was a severe tear with bone and tendon involvement. I am 67, and the recovery has been a long one. If you can believe it, even with physical therapy and pain management, I am still uncomfortable at times. I have a stupid question that I hope you can answer. Ever since surgery, I have had to sleep on my unaffected side. Is it OK for me to finally try sleeping on my right side? I don’t have another appointment at the orthopedic office. I am embarrassed, as it is one question I haven’t asked. -- C.V. ANSWER: It’s not a stupid question at all. I don’t think you will damage the surgery repair by sleeping on the shoulder now, and you certainly can try it to see if it feels uncomfortable. I also would recommend you continue the exercises your physical therapists gave you. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

* On March 17, 1762, in New York City, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is held by Irish soldiers serving in the British army. * On March 16, 1802, the United States Military Academy -- the first military school in the United States, also known as West Point -- is founded by Congress. West Point was the site of a Revolutionary-era fort that Patriot General Benedict Arnold agreed to surrender to the British in exchange for 6,000 pounds. However, the plot was uncovered and Arnold fled to the British for protection. * On March 12, 1903, the New York Highlanders join baseball’s American League, changing its name to the New York Yankees in 1913. * On March 18, 1942, the War Relocation Authority is created to “Take all people of Japanese descent into custody,” as well as some Germans and Italians, and put them in internment camps. One Japanese American, Gordon Hirabayashi, fought internment all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled against him. * On March 14, 1950, the FBI institutes the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list in an effort to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives. Only eight women have appeared on the Most Wanted list. * On March 13, 1965, Eric Clapton leaves the Yardbirds. The English guitarist, singer and songwriter was enough of a purist to quit when the band drifted from the blues toward experimental pop with its 1965 hit “For Your Love.”

* It was Danish scholar and critic Georg Brandes who made the following sage observation: “Poor is the power of the lead that becomes bullets compared to the power of the hot metal that becomes types.” * You doubtless know who Thomas Edison was -- the American inventor of such things as the light bulb, the phonograph and the motionpicture camera. You never learned that he was blind, though, did you? Of course you didn’t -- he wasn’t blind. However, even though he could see, historians say that when he was reading, he preferred Braille to printed text. * Have you ever heard of a lipogram? It’s a work of writing that deliberately leaves out one or more letters of the alphabet. For instance, in 1939 a man named Ernest Vincent Wright published a 50,000-word novel titled “Gadsby,” in which the letter e was not used once -- the longest lipogram in English. * Those who study such things say that the trunk of an African elephant has more than 60,000 muscles. * You might be surprised to learn that the White House had a telephone installed before indoor plumbing was. * I have some bad news for lovers of the snooze button: Experts say that you’re better off not using it. Researchers have found that the last few minutes of sleep are more beneficial if they’re uninterrupted, so it’s better to go ahead and set your alarm for 10 minutes later to begin with. * A study of prison inmates’ medical files revealed this interesting tidbit: The higher the levels of testosterone in a male inmate, the younger that inmate was when he was first arrested. *** Thought for the Day: “I learned compassion from being discriminated against. Everything bad that’s ever happened to me has taught me compassion.” -- Ellen DeGeneres (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

937-205-1211 Who Really Controls Your Smart Devices? Nowadays there are smart devices for the home that can be operated by your phone or even your voice. As convenient as they sound, there’s a big problem: These devices can be controlled by others. And at this stage in our lives, this is the last thing we need. Smart devices can control things like your front-door lock, central air conditioning and refrigerator/freezer, all hooked up to your Wi-Fi. But imagine what would happen in the middle of summer if a hacker turned off your A/C. Or a hacker instructed your front door to unlock -- no breaking in required. Some smart speakers that respond to questions have been found to record every word spoken in your house and store it away. Smart TVs are everywhere now, and they are huge data collectors. The information on the package makes it sound so convenient to stream movies, but think about what they learn, sitting in our living rooms listening, hooked up to other devices. The problems start when you try to set up your new television. You need to be an attorney to understand all the fine-print legalese you must agree to -- which allows them to collect data on you. If you decline, there’s one TV brand that punishes you by turning off all the set’s smart features. What if you already have a smart TV and find all of this snooping annoying? Put it all back to factory settings. Then, when you set it up again, say no to all of it. If you’re buying a new TV and want to avoid the high-tech data collection, consider a nonsmart set. Read up on smart devices and appliances security. If you decide to reject smart devices, you won’t be the only one. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tidbits®NO NEWS! Just Fun, Facts & Trivia! VA Chief Shulkin’s Excellent Adventure I really hate when this happens: Someone you trust to do the right things turns out to possibly not be trustworthy after all. This is what has happened with Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin. The facts look bad. Shulkin was invited to London for a two-day meeting of officials from various countries to talk about veterans issues. Before going, he asked staff to put together a side trip to Denmark to speak with the Danes about Danish healthcare. Shulkin’s wife traveled with him. Approval for paying her way was declined when it was determined that it wasn’t in the government’s best interest. Up stepped his chief of staff, who, after altering emails, claimed that Shulkin was to receive an award at the ambassador’s place in Copenhagen. Therefore, by the rules, the wife’s travel would be paid. Except there was no award. A VA employee, working with the wife on her wish list of things to see and do, played travel agent, on VA time. While in London, Shulkin and his wife attended Wimbledon using tickets given to them by an alleged friend of his wife. During the subsequent investigation interview, that “friend” could not remember Shulkin’s wife’s name. During the nine days they were away, only three-and-a-half days were spent in official meetings. Among a long list of unofficial activities, they visited palaces, took tours, zipped over to Sweden for dinner, went to Buckingham Palace, took a Thames River cruise and much more, apparently dragging security staff along the whole way. Changes in travel plans added $15,699 to airfare costs, but there was insufficient documentation to verify all of the other expenses, which totaled $122,000. Color me disappointed to have to suspect that Shulkin is no different from the rest of them. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
