by Janet Spencer Come along with Tidbits as we remember how technological advances were made! RADIOS • Paul and Joseph Galvin founded Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928, making 8’ toadaptors 16’ In Stock Warranty) that (No allowed battery-operated radios to be plugged into household current. When the Great Depression ruined their market, they had to find a new product. The company next door was working on developing radio technology. The two companies teamed up to figure out how to install radios inside cars. • By 1930 they had designed a radio for cars. They finished just before the Radio Manufacturers Association convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Paul Galvin drove there to advertise the new radio. He couldn’t afford to rent a booth. Instead, he parked on the curb outside the convention doors, cranked the radio up to full blast, and started working the crowd, with good success. • Now it was time to name the new company, so Paul created a name that started with a word that suggested movement, and then added the popular suffix ‘ola’ used in such well-known trade names as Victrola and Pianola. Today it’s a multi-national Fortune 500 electronics company: Motorola.

TRANSISTORS • In 1952, Bell Labs of AT&T sponsored a seminar that explained how the newly developed transistor worked. However, companies had to pay a licensing fee of $25,000 to attend. • In Tokyo, Akio Morita heard about the seminar. After World War II, he’d started up a firm repairing radios, and he designed a tape recorder. He scraped up the $25,000 fee, only to find that Japanese government would not allow so much money to leave the country. Forty other companies attended the seminar, among them Texas Instruments, who used the knowledge to produce the first transistor radio released in 1954. • Undaunted, Morita traveled to Bell Labs on his own in 1953, and convinced them to grant him a provisional license. The Japanese government was impressed with Morita’s industriousness and relented, allowing the license to go through. A year later the first Japanese transistor radio was released. Although Texas Instruments beat him to the market, Morita’s company made transistors commercially successful. • Morita based the name of his company on the Latin “sonus” which is the root of “sonic” and “sound.” Today the firm is one of the world’s largest conglomerates with annual revenues approaching $100 billion: Sony. BETTER SOUND • Ray was born in 1933 and grew up in California. In 1949 he got a job with Ampex Corporation, improving tape recorders and developing the video tape recorder. He focused on finding ways to overcome the noise interference caused by cosmic X-rays, which cause an annoying hissing on magnetic tapes. (cont’d)

Responsible Reptile Ownership

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why are some species of reptiles illegal to own in certain states, like New York? -- Darren in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR DARREN: Reptiles ranging from tiny turtles and lizards to iguanas and boa constrictors are popular pets and can be found in many homes. They are odorless, fairly quiet and mostly keep to themselves in a contained environment. However, as The New York Times reports, many states have concerns about how reptiles are obtained, housed and transported before they come into a home as a pet. These methods can have a terrible impact on the environment as well as the welfare of the animal. A 2014 investigation into a major wholesaler found that 80 percent of the reptiles and amphibians in its care were sick, injured or dead due to overcrowding, stress and poor hygiene and nutrition, the Times reports. Capturing healthy reptiles in the wild can impact

the local ecology, but the alternative, breeding in captivity, can create increased susceptibility to disease. Reptiles and amphibians also need a lot of attention and care to thrive in a captive environment, something many owners don’t consider. Up to 75 percent of them die in their first year after being brought home. New York’s reptile laws, like others, are meant to discourage bringing in pets that, if they escape, can damage the local ecology, and to comply with state health requirements. If you decide to own an amphibian or reptile, do your part by first learning as much as you can about caring properly for the pet. Follow your state’s laws about exotic pets, and source only from reputable dealers. Find a veterinarian who specializes in these pets and get a checkup as soon as you purchase one. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Ray realized that by separating recorded sound into two channels, he could strip unwanted noise while maintaining the clarity of the underlying music. • In 1966 he took a prototype to Decca Records, who were so impressed they bought his entire production run for the next six months. By the early 1970s, Ray had adapted the technology for the broadcast and motion picture industries. “Star Wars” was the first movie to use his noise-reduction system. • His company now has 650 employees. Nearly 30,000 movie theaters use his sound system, and his equipment is used to record every radio and TV performance in the world, as well as in car stereos, cassette players, and DVD players. The technology was dubbed with Ray’s last name: Dolby.

UNITED TECHNOLOGY

• Harald was born in Denmark around the year 935 A.D., the son of King Gorm the Old. He grew up to become the ruler of Denmark, just like his dad. For a brief period he united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single ruler: himself. He ruled until his son deposed him, and died around 986 A.D. • A thousand years later, a Swedish telecom corporation called Ericsson Mobile Communications decided that the world needed a new wireless networking standard to unite computers, cell phones, printers, and PDAs with cable-free communications capabilities. In 1998 Ericsson invited Nokia, Toshiba, IBM, and Intel to strategy meetings. They worked to develop a new low-power low-cost radio interface between computer accessories. Ericsson’s idea was to integrate them all in order to drive a single wireless standard into the industry. (continued next page)

Bringer of Babies

--Where do babies come from? Explaining this to a child has required many imaginative explanations. During the 19th century in the U.S. and Europe, the most popular answer was “the stork brought him” or “he was found in the cabbage patch.” There are stories dating well before the 1600s that say a baby was found under a large cabbage leaf or was delivered by a flying stork. For centuries, each country had a story. The baby was brought from midwives, wild women of the forest, owls, foxes, a male water sprite, a raven or a crow. The baby could be found under a gooseberry bush, or a lime tree in countries that didn’t grow cabbages. No one really knew where babies came from until the 1680s, when the microscope and other discoveries helped scientists figure it out. It was not until the 1830s that most people were convinced a man and woman, not a stork, made a baby. In Germany, there was the legend of Der Kindlbringer, the bringer of babies. He carried a bundle of babies in a bunting, in a basket or on his back. He was dressed like a harlequin. Several different German porcelain figurines that were made in about 1850 were sold at a Theriault auction on July 26, 2016 in Washington, D.C. The five-inch porcelain figure of a man carrying six babies sold for $513. *** Q: I would like to get vintage champagne glasses to friends as an anniversary gift. I have been told that

new glasses are flutes, but old ones are coupe-shape with round bowls. A: Wine connoisseurs will tell you to serve champagne in a flute. That shape became popular about 1950, and blown-glass hollowstem champagne glasses were banned from many restaurants. The stems were too hard to clean. The flute replaced it for sparkling drinks. However, there recently has been a new way to serve champagne. Use a regular wine glass, probably a Bordeaux glass that has straight sides and tapers a bit to the rim. Some experts say these glasses let the aroma last longer. The bubbles look best in a flute, but any of these glasses can be correct for less-formal parties. The flute probably is expected for a diplomatic or royal affair. Remember: Fine crystal is thin and breaks easily. It must be carefully placed in a dishwasher, or better yet, washed by hand. *** TIP: Remove dripped candle wax on a tabletop with a credit card. Scrape with the grain of the wood. When finished use furniture polish or wax to restore the top’s luster. The 50th anniversary edition of “Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2018” makes a great gift. The 548-page softcover book features 20,000 listings and more than 2,500 full-color photographs, plus trends, special events and surprises. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The logo is composed of the intertwined ancient runes for Harald’s initials, HB: Harald Bluetooth. VIDEO GAMES • A Japanese businessman founded a playing card company in 1889 and named it after the Japanese words meaning “leave luck to heaven.” He handed the company down to his son-in-law, who handed it down to his son-inlaw, who was named Hiroshi Yamauchi. • Hiroshi paid a visit to the largest playing card manufacturer in the U.S. He was shocked to find them operating in a tiny office. This convinced him he needed to expand his business beyond cards, because he wanted a big factory, not a small office. Hiroshi hired a man named Yokoi to oversee the assembly line. One day he saw Yokoi playing with an automatic hand-extender contraption, which he had manufactured in his spare time for fun. Hiroshi seized the opportunity, and the ‘Ultra Hand’ sold over a million units. Yokoi was put into product development. • In 1977 the firm hired Shigeru Miyamoto, whose talent was electronic games. Yokoi and Shigeru worked together to develop a ‘Color TV Game Machine’ which was one of the first video games on the market. In 1981 they had a hit with a game starring an ape, and that was followed by a game starring an Italian plumber who battles creatures in sewers. The firm grew and eventually became Japan’s third most valuable company, still named after the Japanese words for ‘leave luck to heaven’: Nintendo with the popular games called Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers.

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties IRUKANDJI JELLYFISH

• The Irukandji people are an aboriginal tribe indigenous to the coastal strip north of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. For years members of the tribe often suffered from an excruciatingly painful malady that could not be explained. • They swam in the ocean frequently, and an hour or two later, the symptoms would begin: intense muscle cramps, pain in the back and kidneys, a burning sensation of the skin and face, headaches, nausea, restlessness, sweating, vomiting, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, and psychological phenomena such as the feeling of impending doom. Victims required hospitalization. • In 1952, a medical practitioner named the perplexing sickness Irukandji syndrome after the people who so often suffered from it. The cause of the illness remained unknown until 1964, when a physician and toxicologist named Jack Barnes theorized it was caused by a tiny jellyfish commonly found in the tropical waters of the area. No bigger than a cube of sugar and nearly invisible in the water, this jellyfish delivers a venom 100 times as potent as that of a cobra and 1,000 times stronger than a tarantula. However, the sting itself is only moderately painful, similar to a mosquito bite, and the venom doesn’t begin working for an hour or two after contact with human skin. • To prove his theory, Jack Barnes caught one of these little jellyfish and deliberately rubbed it against the skin of his arm, as his 14-year-old son and a lifeguard kept watch. Within an hour, he exhibited all the classic signs of Irukandji syndrome, whereupon he was taken to the hospital to recover. Later, he found that wearing panty hose while swimming provided enough of a barrier to prevent the jellyfish from stinging. Lifeguards in Australia now commonly don panty hose as protection in the water. (continued)

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com IRUKANDJI JELLYFISH (cont’d) • The jellyfish that caused the illness is now called the Irukandji jellyfish. There are sixteen different species of Irukandji jellyfish, some of which inhabit tropical waters of the United States. Up to 100 people per year end up in the hospital after encountering this creature. A single sting is normally not fatal, and the illness usually abates after about 30 hours. Treatment is merely supportive. • Their range is constantly expanding due to climate change. Most stings occur during the warmest months of the year when the jellyfish are most active. • In the 1960s, Irukandji syndrome would strike the Irukandji people for only one month out of the year: the warmest month. Now the Irukandji season lasts for six months out of the year. During the season, lifeguards on the beaches drag nets through the water and if they find one Irukandji, the beaches are closed down. • In Australia, an average of 30 people per year area hospitalized with Irukandji syndrome between November and May, which is the warm season. But in 2002 between December and January alone, that number leapt to 80 victims at a single hospital in Cairns. That was the year that two tourists died of the sting, including a research scientist for Nestles from Columbus, Ohio, and a British man who had recently recovered from heart surgery. • Recent research indicates that massive doses of magnesium can help prevent the danger of the toxin by counteracting the effect of adrenaline and lessening the risk of heart failure and stroke. However, there is no known antidote to the venom itself. • In the meantime, the best solution seems to be to either stay out of the water, or wear panty hose while swimming.

Not Just Parties...Walk in to Dine with Us ANYTIME!

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two separate days in the past month, I woke up in the middle of the night after being asleep for about four hours and realized that my heart was beating extremely fast. I waited a few minutes and, just as I was wondering if I should go to the emergency room, my pulse started to slow down. I had no other symptoms other than my heart racing. I am a 25-year-old female with no other health problems. My roommate said she thought it could have been caused by stress. I’m scared it will happen again. Should I go to the hospital if it does happen again? -- S.C. ANSWER: Waking up with your heart racing can be due to anxiety, but that isn’t a common presentation for anxiety, which usually is in response to stressful situations (or anticipating one). Waking up with a racing heart is more likely to be due to a heart-rhythm disturbance, such as a reentrant AV nodal tachycardia. The most common reason for this is having two pathways from the top of the heart (the sinoatrial node) through the midpoint (the atrioventricular node), which then goes on to the ventricles. A circular pathway can get set up down the abnormal fast pathway and up the slow one (or vice versa) causing a very fast heart rate. I would not wait for it to happen again but would go see a doctor and maybe get connected to a Holter monitor or event monitor. Both track your heart rhythm for extended periods of time. Once you have a diagnosis, you can be treated, with radio waves to destroy the abnormal fast pathway or with medication if it ends up being the condition I am concerned about. READERS: The booklet on heartbeat irregularities -- whether too fast, too slow or out of rhythm -- explains this potentially deadly condition and how it is treated. Order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A good friend of mine has an unusual problem. Every time he eats fresh tomatoes, he gets pimples. Is this an allergy? It never fails to cause pimples. -- E.D. ANSWER: Yes, I have heard that before. Fresh tomatoes, but not cooked ones, seem to cause some people to have an acne breakout, at any age. Other acidic foods, especially citrus, seem to cause that reaction, too. It’s not a true allergy. Acne is a complex condition, and it starts with a hair follicle being blocked by excessive skin cell growth, causing a plug in the follicle. This allows skin bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, to grow in the oily substance normally used to lubricate the skin and hair follicle. It’s called sebum. While there is some evidence that diet can worsen acne, it isn’t exactly clear how that works. Most cases of adolescent acne are primarily due to the hormonal changes causing increased sebum production. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to. (c) 2017 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

* On Dec. 13, 1776, American Gen. Charles Lee leaves his army, riding in search of female sociability at Widow White’s Tavern, even though Gen. George Washington repeatedly urged Lee to reinforce Washington’s position on the Delaware River. British soldiers captured Lee at the tavern two days later. * On Dec. 17, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens’ father was thrown into debtors’ prison in 1824, and 12-year-old Charles was sent to work in a factory. Dickens wrote about the miserable treatment of children and the institution of the debtors’ jail in several novels. * On Dec. 12, 1901, Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi succeeds in sending the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean. Detractors had told him the curvature of the earth would limit transmission to 200 miles or less. * On Dec. 11, 1936, Edward VIII becomes the first English monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne following his scandalous decision to marry American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson. * On Dec. 16, 1960, two airplanes collide over New York City, killing 134 people on the planes and on the ground. Christmas presents carried by the plane’s passengers were strewn all over the streets, and multiple fires burned for nearly 72 hours.

* It was 20th-century French journalist, poet, aristocrat and aviator Antoine de SaintExupery -- best known for his novella “The Little Prince” -- who made the following sage observation: “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” * Eggplants weren’t always the deep purple color we know today; originally, the vegetables were white. The color, paired with the ovoid shape, is how the eggplant got its name. * If you live in Rochester, New York, you’re doubtless used to dealing with the hazards and inconveniences of snow and ice. It’s America’s snowiest city, after all, averaging 94 inches every winter. * Those who study such things say that paternity leave can have significant domestic impacts. Research shows that men who take a few weeks of leave when they have an addition to their family spend more time on domestic chores and taking care of the kids than men who don’t. They cook more, and they’re even 50 percent more likely to do laundry. The most interesting finding, though, is the fact that these changes are long-term; the effect tends to last the rest of a man’s life. * Those who suffer from nescience are unlikely to know what “nescience” means – an absence of knowledge. * The first wristwatch was made by an English clockmaker in 1571. Described as “a wristlet in which there was a clocke,” the watch was presented as a gift to Queen Elizabeth I. * If you’re like the average human, you have about 615 hairs for every square centimeter of your skin. *** Thought for the Day: “A man said to the universe: ‘Sir I exist!’ ‘However,’ replied the universe, ‘The fact has not created in me a sense of obligation.’” -- Stephen Crane (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Senior Discounts: You’ve Earned Them If you’ve always prided yourself on being completely independent and have delayed being categorized as a senior, this might be the time to reconsider that. Here are some thoughts: * Are you getting the correct property-tax relief? While your area might specify that you get a certain percent off your taxes because you’re a senior, it’s always possible that a clerk didn’t enter your information correctly. Ask. * Are you shy about asking for your discount at restaurants or other places? Don’t be. Those dollars can add up. If you’re a member of AARP, it’s worth the yearly membership fee if you take advantage of the discounts. Check its website (aarp.org) and click on Discounts. New glasses, groceries, travel, your wireless plan with AT&T, car rental, restaurants and more -- it’s all there for the taking. Be sure to always carry your AARP card with you, and get used to asking, “Do you offer senior discounts?” You’ll learn that many places do give discounts, but only if you ask. * Safety calls: Many senior centers or small towns have a Good Morning program where seniors receive (or make) a call to let them know all is well. If you don’t check in or answer the phone, your emergency contact is called. If you have no emergency contact or neighbor listed, someone will come to your door to make sure you’re OK. * Home help: Some communities have a weekend each year when groups help seniors with painting a porch or room, raking a yard and much more. Sign up! * Be aware that not all “seniors” are the same. In some places you don’t qualify for discounts until age 65. Or maybe it’s age 50, or 55 or 62. You only need to ask. The seriousness of the issue came to light during the annual Community Homelessness Assessment, wherein lack of legal help topped the list of needed services. Step one, per VA Secretary David Shulkin, will be to partner VA medical centers with their communities to create more legal clinics. Right now there are some 165 free legal clinics in VA medical centers, outpatient clinics and vet centers, with the VA partnered with legal service providers. So they know how to do it. Surely in every VA medical center or other facility there’s space to set up a couple of rooms for a waiting area and private conference areas. For more information on this new partnership, go online to www.va.gov/OGC/LegalServices. asp and click through the links. For locations that are up and running, see the “click here” link two lines down from Legal Help for Veterans. A spreadsheet will open with all the locations, contact info and areas of specialty. Also click on the List of Organizations Providing Pro Bono Legal Services for Veterans link for a map of states and the directory of pro bono legal assistance. Remember, if you get into a snag, you’re not alone. Ask whether one of the legal clinics is already up and running at your local VA medical center or outpatient location. Call and ask for their VA Veterans Justice Outreach Specialist. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
