TOP 12 LGBT BEACH DESTINATIONS

SYDNEY

Who wouldn’t love to be on a beach sipping on an umbrella clad fruity drink and being hypnotized by the ebb and flow of the waves. Well it’s time to stop daydreaming about it and make that daydream a reality. We have compiled a list of some favorite beach destinations to choose from. So get that bathing suit packed and make sure to bring extra sunscreen.

SYDNEY Sydney has 6 gay-friendly beaches that have become popular LGBT destinations, including North Bondi Beach, Bronte Beach and Tamarama Beach. Obelisk Beach and Lady Jane Beach are popular, secluded spots for nude sunbathers. Water taxis are provided as transportation to Obelisk Beach, and during the summer, expect

6 THESTANDARDPS.COM

frequent visits from one of the famous Sydney Harbor Ice Cream Boats to help keep things cool. NICE, FRANCE This is not the typical gay destination in Europe, but it is slowly becoming a popular spot. Nice is now the second-most-visited city in France for gay tourists, after Paris, and with more than 35 gay outlets, we’re sure there’s something for everyone. In addition the vibrant gay and lesbian club scene, this beach town has several museums, high-end shops and a famous flower market, and it plays host to the annual Pink Parade. Nice has a gay and gay-friendly beach, Coco Beach and Castel Plage, respectively. For adventurous sunbathers, there are 2 more gay beaches located outside the small French town.

NICE, FRANCE

RIO DE JANEIRO

RIO DE JANEIRO

MYKONOS, GREECE

We know all about the popularity of Copacabana Beach, but Ipanema Beach is what’s really hot! Ipanema’s gay spot, Farme Gay Beach, is a little to the east of Rua Farme de Amoedo. It’s the best place to make friends with the locals outside of the bar and club scene. Party promoters often distribute fliers with discounts to gay parties and clubs. After the beach, head to the popular hangout Cafeína e Tô nem Aí for a beer or a snack.

Mykonos has become a well-known spot for beach lovers and partygoers. The Greek island’s Elia Beach is probably one of the most gay-friendly stretches of sand in the Mediterranean. It’s a United Nations of gays from all over the world, basking in lounge chairs while sipping cocktails and gazing at the electric-blue waters. Just a word of caution: It may be wise to plan ahead. Taxis may be hard to come by, and buses and ferries stop at relatively early hours.

Sitges’ Playa de la Bassa Rodona is increasingly becoming a straight beach, but it is packed with gay men during the peak season. This beach is located below the Picnic Restaurant and across from Hotel Calipolis. Nude sunbathers looking for more privacy should head to Playa del Muerto or Playa de las Balmins. Visit Barcelona’s Barcelonetta Beach if you’re looking for a quick day trip. Barcelona is only a 45-minute train ride away from Sitges.

Brighton is the UK’s gay capital. The town’s seafront has bars, restaurants, nightclubs and amusement arcades between the piers. Brighton Beach has a nudist area, south of the easterly part of Kemptown, aka the “gay village.” West Beach, Telscombe Cliffs, Duke’s Mound and Shoreham are a few hot beach spots. Visit Brighton and find out why the bohemian atmosphere of this beach town has led to the largest LGBT crowds in the UK.

PROVINCETOWN, MA

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA

Provincetown, a gay and lesbian resort community at the tip of Cape Cod, ranks among the world’s great seaside vacation destinations. Along with hosting its annual Gay Pride celebration, P’town continues to improve with more upscale inns, fine art galleries and superb restaurants. Peak season for the New England town is usually July through August. Stay in the town’s West End, go for a fun bike ride and go sunbathing on Herring Cove Beach or Race Point Beach.

Known as the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is where the boys are. Sebastian Street Gay Beach, located near most of the gay resorts, is one of the most popular beach destinations for gay tourists. Along with dozens of gay-friendly shops along the beach, the city also thrives with fun gay bars and restaurants, such as Hamburger Mary’s, a great place to start or end the night.

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL Tel Aviv is famous for its never-ending beach line. Nearly 9 miles of blue sea, open horizon, sun and lots of people make it the perfect beach destination. The city has a few gay-friendly beaches, including Ga’ash nude beach, a popular gay beach outside Tel Aviv. Visit Hilton Beach if nude sunbathing isn’t your thing. It’s a little strip beach located near the Hilton Hotel. MAUI

FIRE ISLAND, NEW YORK Head to Fire Island’s Pines Beach if you’re looking for a fun party beach with gay-friendly shopping, hotels, vacation rentals and a vibrant nightlife. Nudity is allowed on the shore. The island plays host to several LGBT events, including the multicultural Fire Island Black Out in Cherry Grove. CANCUN Cancun is a hot beach destination for spring breakers, but it’s also the location of a popular gay beach, Playa Delfines. The water is generally treacherous to swim in, but the white sand is perfect for

sunning, and the view is incredible. This beach is also popular for surfing and a great place to take surfing lessons. Gay couples and singles enjoy Playa Delfines, and it has become known unofficially as the gay beach in Cancun. MAUI We’d be remiss if we didn’t have at least one Hawaiian beach on our list. Gay and lesbians converge on “Little Beach” in Makena State Park, located about 1 mile past the Maui Prince Hotel. This beach is so secluded that you have to hike up and over a lava-flow trail to get to it, but it won’t be hard to miss.

TRAVEL TIPS

GREAT TOOLS FOR A GREAT VACATION BY CHRIS ASTRALA

Planning a trip can be a daunting task, but for a gay traveler, it can be even more difficult. There are limited resources for the LGBT community, so Travel Channel has put together a quick list of gay travel guides, websites and other resources to help you plan your next gay vacation. GAY AND LESBIAN TRAVEL GUIDES When planning a trip, some travelers enjoy the flexibility of having a travel guide on-hand to highlight important travel tips and must-see sights. Damron and Spartacus travel guides are still our picks for top gay travel resources; both are chock-full of gay-owned or gayfriendly destinations, accommodations, restaurants, bars and more. Damron, a popular travel source since 1964, publishes the Men’s Travel Guide and Women’s Traveller each year. Damron lists thousands of gay-friendly businesses in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, the Caribbean, South America, Europe and Asia. Accommodations, bars, bookstores, gyms and a calendar of events are just some of the info you’ll find inside these guides. Damron also has a travel app. Gay Scout by Damron is available for travelers who enjoy sightseeing and exploring without carrying extra weight. The Spartacus International Gay Guide is another annual travel guide for planning your gay getaway. Spartacus, much like Damron, also has other guides that travelers can purchase, including the International Hotel & Restaurant Guide. Even though we suggest LGBT travelers check Damron and Spartacus travel guides and their websites, we also suggest looking at more familiar brands, such as Frommer’s, Shermans Travel and Lonely Planet. These travel guides offer great general information, but in most cases, also provide insightful travel tips for “Friends of Dorothy.” So you really can’t go wrong with picking up a mainstream travel guide. LGBT ONLINE TRAVEL SITES In addition to travel guides in print, online travel websites can reduce the stress of planning a trip. Out Traveler covers the pulse

of LGBT travel, including hot trends, topics and destinations. The website provides travelers with city guides and vacation packages. IGLTA, the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, is another great resource to find LGBT businesses and destinations. This site provides the best locations and packages for individual, group, corporate and student travel. It has dozens of links to hotels, cities, countries, travel agents and tour operators around the world. IGLTA publishes its annual member directory, a listing of businesses around the world. All businesses are listed in alphabetical order by country for ease of use. Another useful travel aid is Passport Magazine, available in print and on the interwebs. This magazine covers all the regular gay travel faire with a keen focus on business travel, and international destinations and events. Yes, there is a Passport Magazine app, but it’s only useful if you’re looking for inspiration, or if you want to check out the magazine on your iPhone or iPad. Passport is a great travel resource with in-depth articles about exotic destinations, travel gear and much more. In addition to Passport Magazine, GayCities is a popular website to check out for gay travel information. Plan your next getaway using more than 200 extensive city guides, a LGBT events calendar and other unique features. Register to become part of the GayCities community and connect with other travelers. Ask questions and get real answers from locals or travelers in the know. For the tech savvy, check out the nifty GayCities app. Gay-ville may not have a mobile app yet, but it’s a great website to get tips from locals, pick up the local lingo and find lowcost accommodations in a few gay-friendly destinations around the world, including Rio de Janeiro, Mykonos, Berlin and Sydney. Don’t be startled, but this website appears to be more popular among gay travelers in Europe. However, we’re sure you’ll be able to glean some helpful information, especially if you’re into couch surfing and crashing in a host family’s spare bedroom. LGBT TRAVEL HAS REALLY EVOLVED! BY LEIGH GERNERT

TUSCANY

MOULIN BREGEON

There was a time when if two men checked into a hotel with only one bed, the front desk personnel would heave an audible gasp and say, “I’m so very sorry for our error, but we booked you into a room with only one bed – please let me see if I can correct this. You were then left with the embarrassing task of explaining that there was no mistake – that you only wanted one bed and then get a judgmental look from everyone behind the counter.

There are small luxury properties in the Loire Valley of France and the Tuscany region of Italy that are gay-owned but not advertised as gay only – where you can take over the entire property with a group of your gay friends and be welcomed by the owners who are anxious to allow you to be yourself and introduce you to other gays in the surrounding area. These also make unique destination venues for gay weddings that are private and chic.

Well, those days are far behind us and it has indeed become a gay-friendly travel world. Companies like Atlantis Events and RSVP Travel continuously host several enormous sold-out cruise vessels every year. Practically every major hotel chain gives their employees diversity training – specifically in the respectful treatment of gay and lesbian clients; hotels create “Gay Pride Weekend Specials” in conjunction with local Gay Pride Events in their city, large wellrespected companies like Belmond (formerly Orient Express) recently appointed a Director of LGBT Sales and are focusing on the samesex destination wedding market, companies like Pleasant Holidays publish a list of 70 of their LGBT-Friendly resorts around the world. There are many gay-owned companies like Zoom Vacations, Source Events, and Coda Tours who create hundreds of small upscale tours and cruises designed for the gay traveler to amazing destinations that have been carefully explored to insure that you, as a gay traveler, can travel in safety knowing that you will can be yourself and not worry about being harassed.

There is also an organization called IGLTA (International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association) that has been in existence for 33 years and is the world’s leading global travel network dedicated to connecting and educating LGBT travelers and the businesses that welcome and support them. They have major sponsors like Delta Airlines, Hilton Hotels, Belmond Hotels, MGM Hotels, and Hyatt Resorts who all look to IGLTA to help them learn how to market to gays. So now instead of being overlooked by most mainstream companies 20 years ago, these same companies are now investing millions to appeal to the gay market, which represents more than $211 billion in annual spending. And it’s only going to get better. INDESIGN TRAVEL & DESIGN… A LIFE WELL LIVED BY DANN FOLEY

Summer is here and one of the quintessential pass times of summer is, travel. I was raised in a family of great travelers. I used to jokingly call my grandparents nomads because they traveled the globe. Some of my fondest childhood memories of summer are sitting at the breakfast table with my brothers and sister while my mother read from the itinerary of that days travel for my grandparents. Every day was a different city, every week a different country. I learned my love of travel during those days and from the travel I did with my own family. As an adult I have continued to explore other places and cultures. As a designer I find infinite inspiration in my wanderings, both far and near. If inspiration is the tool of great design, then travel is the fuel. The writer Mary Anne Radmacher wrote, “I am not the same for having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world”, that my friends, is the kind of inspiration that fills the soul. Now lets take that quote and apply it to our own homes. One of my many “Dannisms” is, “We don’t need more things, we just need things that are more meaningful.” Filling your home with meaning is not about money, it is about passion and memories, they can be as humble as a seashell from that beach you visited in Miami or as grand as an antique painting you purchased from a little shop in the French countryside. In my own home, I surround myself with the things that tell my life’s story. Yes, I often change the color on the walls, or the sofa or the drapery in any given room, but the things that take space in my home are the things bring meaning to my life. I cherish the paintings and prints on my walls because each have a past that connects me to a memory. I lovingly care for the red lacquered cabinet my grandfather had made on a trip to Hong Kong, which was for his den and now graces my foyer. I often find myself musing over this or that object on a table or bookcase that takes me back to a moment of discovery somewhere in my past.

Inspired by the streets of Paris

Here are a few of my tips & tricks to bringing your memories into your home with style and beauty… • Photographs are terrific in albums on your coffee table but why not create a wall for your best travel photos? You don’t have to be in the pictures, just love how they speak to you. • Gathering like items together is one way of creating impact.

INDESIGN

Inspired by the Art of Aix, Provence

They don’t have to be from the same place, but when like items are brought together, they tell an additional story. • Lighting is an important element in display. Art lights, table lights, back lighting, etc., they all help to create a mood and add emphasis to even the most simple of pieces. • Keep your eyes open for out of the ordinary things when traveling. I love to find vintage textiles and create new pieces from them. You can frame them, make pillows from them or cover a small chair seat. • Antique and vintage photography is another way to connect with places you have been and it can be wonderfully affordable as well. I bought an antique photo of a street I visited in the English countryside, and then I went out and shot the same exact angle. The two photos handing together, under one frame is really magical.

Inspired by a French Villa in Provence

Here is the other great thing about meaningful things from your life and travels…they never clash with any décor! Items of deep meaning to you will always be in style and will always make a beautiful room. They are the things that fill our lives, not litter them. My point for you, in this month of travel at The Standard Magazine, is to find the joy in experiencing the new and the out of the ordinary. Remember, life is short but, the world is wide and our travels make us who we are. Live Well!

BEFORE

Have you been dreaming of indulging in a luxury retreat where you can simply and totally unwind? Have you been searching for a vacation rental where there’s no skimping on extras or amenities? Have you been struggling to find a Palm Springs vacation home that is really a home? If so, then Welcome to ModMansions and come on in because you have found the right place for renting Palm Springs Luxury. ModMansions is a unique vacation rental company because we are the owners of all the houses you stay in. My partner and I have purchased, completely renovated, decorated and now rent and manage all of our homes so that you can thoroughly enjoy your vacation experience here in Palm Springs, California. At ModMansions our goal is not to “just put bodies in beds” like all the other property management companies in town. Rather, we strive to get the right people in the right house so that your vacation expectations can be achieved - and exceeded. But did you also know that ModMansions is more than just a luxury vacation rental company? We are not just another management company with some pretty houses to rent! Did you know ModMansions acts as their own construction company developing, renovating and rebuilding the luxury retreats that make up our rental portfolio? Did you know we own and operate a hotel

in Manhattan Beach, CA called, “The Sea View Inn at the Beach?” Did you know the Owner of ModMansions was recognized by The Financial Times of London and OUTstanding as one of 2016 Leading 100 LGBTQ Executives in the world for his advocacy for LGBTQ youth, as well as, creating a working environment which nurtures and promotes diversity, authenticity, creativity and equal rights for all – gay and straight? “YOU GUYS BUILT THIS PLACE?” Every house in our portfolio has been meticulously and completely remodeled to assure our luxury homes not only compliment the neighborhood around it, but are also prepared to provide the comfort and luxury our clients expect when they come to “vacachill” in our beautiful Mod-Mansions. As you can see in the before / after photos, the Las Palmas Vistas mansion was reduced to a slab, a fireplace, and a few walls. Before we began to design and remodel this property, we removed the entire roof, all of the windows, and virtually every wall. This was a big project! However, after the better part of a year under construction and completely managed by ModMansions, the results were nothing short of stunning. This is now one of our top performing mansions and also one of our most popular – even when it rains – check out one client’s review: “This is my third consecutive stay and it was flawless. Even a little bit of rain couldn’t drown out our pleasure. The commitment of the

owners to service is impeccable; here’s a perfect example: I realize at 7:30 am that we don’t have a coffee grinder and within 15 minutes a grinder magically appears at our front door! If you have a party of 6 or more, I’d choose this place over any hotel - always!” “YOU GUYS HAVE A HOTEL, TOO?” Not only does ModMansions know luxury, but we know the hospitality industry too! And, yup, we own and operate a hotel as well. The name of the hotel is The Sea View Inn at the Beach and it is located in Manhattan Beach, CA, (www.theseaviewinn.com). The Sea View Inn at the Beach is an intimate seaside hotel with a relaxed modern style. Situated in the stylish, hip and casual seaside town of Manhattan Beach, The Sea View Inn is a compound of five buildings and is the closest hotel in town to the beach. What’s more, The Sea View is just minutes away from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and many popular tourist destinations. This place is totally cool and chill – just a short walk down the “walk-street” and you are at the beach – miles of sandy beach. Can you feel the sand between your toes yet? When you stay at The Sea View Inn every room has free WiFi, 400 thread count sheets on a Simmons Posturepedic Mattress, heating and A/C, refrigerator, coffee maker with organic French roast coffee, organic bath accessories, hair dryers, ironing board and iron. Also, with every stay, beach touring bicycles, heated pool, beach chairs, beach towels, boogie boards, beach umbrellas, beach toys for the kids, AND on-site parking are always available FREE OF CHARGE. So the next time you are traveling to Palm Springs via LAX, perhaps you should plan to stay at The Sea View Inn for the first day(s) of your vacation or figure it into your return home plans so you don’t have to fight the traffic before boarding a plane - taxi rides from The Sea View to LAX are usually no longer than 20 minutes door to door. WHERE TO STAY? Do you have a place to stay? Here is your opportunity to check out ModMansions and see what we have available for rent. ModMansions offers the best Palm Springs Rentals available and all of our properties have been remodeled for today’s traveller. TRAVEL TIPS

WAYS TO COMPLAIN EFFECTIVELY Your room doesn’t look like it did on the hotel’s website. It’s more like a broom closet than an elegant suite. You’ve booked 2 expensive business class seats for your 10th anniversary trip and neither one reclines. “We’re very sorry, there are no other seats available,” you are told firmly and finally. Do you just sit there and take it? No way, says Suzanne Fletcher, President and CEO of the National Business Travel Association. “First take a deep breath,” Fletcher advises. Taking a moment to compose yourself will help you remember that this one trip is not the single most important thing in the world. “Taking a moment to compose yourself will help you remember that this one trip is not the single most important thing in the world. And that will allow you to approach a discussion more calmly and politely.” THEN WHAT? 1: When you need to complain, do so as soon as possible. It’s best to get the situation rectified on the spot, if possible, rather than having to complain after the fact. 2: Be calm and polite, direct and firm. Like you, airline, hotel, and car rental employees face myriad challenges every day. If you approach them politely and explain your frustration clearly, they are much more likely to be inclined to help you. 3: Understand that airline rules are complicated. Experts often tell travelers to “know the rules” before complaining, but for many airline passengers following that advice would mean never complaining. Your best bet is to know the restrictions associated with your ticket to the extent possible (for example, is it a refundable ticket?), and beyond that to realize that the airline may or may not be required to rectify the situation you face. 4: If you’re getting nowhere, talk to someone else. Sometimes talking to the right person can make all the difference. If you’re not making any progress, get back in line and speak with a different agent, or ask to speak with a manager or station manager. 5: Use your cell phone. The time you spend waiting in a long line of people can double as time on-hold at the call center. You may get

22 THESTANDARDPS.COM

through on the phone before you get the front of the physical line. 6: Know what you are complaining about and what you want. It sounds simple, but sometimes people get so frustrated they don’t clearly explain the problem or what they hope to accomplish by complaining. Starting your conversation with those points will give you a better chance of success. 7: Respect security personnel and know current security standards. Showing frustration with security screeners will not help you get to your destination any faster, nor is it likely to change operations at the checkpoint. The best things you can do to help make their jobs easier and your security experience smoother is to know and follow current screening rules, and give yourself plenty of time to get through the line. Showing frustration with security screeners will not help you get to your destination any faster.

8: Your travel department or travel agency is your lifeline. When the hotel doesn’t have the room you reserved; the rental car is the wrong size vehicle; or your flight is cancelled, and the line at the airline counter is so long after that you know you’ll never get on the next one – your travel agency can often help you. Carry the phone number with you and, if there is one, the after-hours number for help in these difficult situations. Hotels and airlines pay a lot of attention to written comments, good and bad. Include names and other specifics. Finally, Sam Haigh, President and CEO of Benchmark Hospitality International advises travelers to “always follow up in writing – even if the issue was solved to your satisfaction.” “This gives the property or airline additional input upon which to follow up with you. Hotels and airlines pay a lot of attention to written comments, good and bad. Include names and other specifics.”

THE AMAZON TRAIL

A LESBIAN ELDER’S WARNING BY LEE LYNCH

A friend of many decades, who currently depends on federal assistance for affordable housing, sent me her concerns about the current direction of our government. As a lesbian, a feminist, a woman, a senior with disabilities, and a progressive activist, she feels especially vulnerable right now. She needed anonymity, but gave me permission to share her insight. “As I watch the mechanism of Fascism being put into place in our country, I look for the small back stories that tell the larger tale when the stories are all knitted together. I look for what is happening locally. One such small story surfaced in my life last month. “Our local Housing Authority (HA) provides rental assistance to low-income people through the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 Voucher System, a life-saving program. “The budget for the HA has been drastically cut over the years.

26 THESTANDARDPS.COM

No surprise here. The program has gone from 3 people working full time 3 days a week in our small town to 1 person available to residents 3 hours a week. One of the aspects of the program is a yearly inspection of the voucher recipient’s home. This is a good thing. Homes are checked to confirm they are safe and healthy places to live. The inspector checks for the basics: working water and electrical systems, safe stairs, secure doors and windows, etc. The inspector also checks to make sure no one is cooking meth in the bathtub and that things look on the up and up. “Our local inspector covers a very large network of homes for the HA. Budget cuts make this a challenge. He is quick and efficient. He takes about 10 minutes of time and then is off to the next inspection. “On his way out the door, I asked him how the current government

is impacting the HUD program. He said a 13% reduction of HUD is in the works. He also said that a sea change in inspections is being proposed. Instead of a local inspector doing what he has done for years effectively, the government is proposing to do an ‘in depth’ inspection. That entails calling in ‘professionals’ in the field of housing development such as foundation, roofing, and heating contractors, to do studies of the voucher recipient’s home. Once the bevy of contractors (local? we doubt it) completes the inspection, then the results are shipped back to the federal office. Then—and, this is where the story reveals how the current government is overlaying a Fascist template—photographs of the interior of the home will be taken, that is, photos of bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and computer area. These photos will then be sent to a massive database at the federal level. “Many of us probably saw the outstanding piece of journalism in ‘The Guardian’ which exposed the financial connections between US elections and the UK Brexit vote: <https://goo.gl/6bjzvR>. I am deeply concerned. The way for me to combat this horrible situation is by understanding it as clearly as possible so I can adjust my responses accordingly. Also, I can help others to understand. “After the election, I questioned ‘why’ unqualified billionaires were being put in charge of federal programs like HUD. I think I finally got it after reading the ‘Guardian’ piece. Each of our government’s agencies have massive databases. Data is what the Fascists are seeking. The billionaires are simply placeholders in the agencies. They hold the doors open for the Fascist Information Technology teams to collect data and breach data privacy agreements. Today’s technology facilitates mega database collection. And, that includes pictures of my bedroom and computer area. “As for the gravy train for contractors inspecting the homes, we all know who is in the housing and land development business.” Unlike my friend, I’m not ready to use the term fascism in reference to the administration, but I think she, and the quoted “Guardian” article, are not to be ignored. I admire how she brings home the need to understand what is happening to our country that has gripped me, and so many other Americans. Just yesterday, at a tiny, rural Mexican restaurant, I was sitting with another worried lesbian when a gentleman in his sixties, seated near us with his wife, complimented me on the t-shirt I wore: Elizabeth Warren’s “Nevertheless, She Persisted” shirt. I thought he was going to hug me; he was so demonstrably thrilled to have found a progressive compatriot. A lesbian elder’s pen, a stranger at the next table, a respected Senator standing up to speak the truth. Our very vulnerabilities make us strong as long as we continue to tell our stories, large and small.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

HOW TO SURVIVE A MARRIAGE BREAKUP BY CHRISTOPHER HERITAGE The best of intentions just don’t work out, sometimes. The fantastic advance of legal same sex marriage was a euphoric event for so many in the LGBTQ community. Some who hadn’t quite thought it through were caught up in the excitement. Others were so committed to their long-time partnership they didn’t realize how marriage would change their relationship. And some, like many humans, just couldn’t stick out the legal and binding commitment. So, what happens when two people are bound together under the law and one or both don’t want to be there anymore? In California, a dissolution of the marriage can be ordered by the Superior Court in the county of the Petitioner (the spouse filing the petition for dissolution). One spouse may file a petition, even if the other does not want to end the marriage. The dissolution (disso) process doesn’t need to be terribly complicated if both spouses agree to the split and a fair division of property and debts they own together. A disso petition includes issuing a Summons to the other spouse (the respondent) and filing it with the family law division of the Superior Court. Usually, a hearing is not required if neither party is seeking spousal support or attorney fees. The Petitioner must prepare a list of assets and debts as a basis for negotiating the fair division of everything. Nothing may be hidden. If one party believes the other is not making a full disclosure, the judge can order that all assets be documented or produced. If both parties agree and accept the disclosures, a Marital Settlement Agreement (MSA) Is usually prepared by the Petitioner’s attorney. Both spouses sign off on this, and it is filed with the court, along with an Order for the judge to sign. This concludes the dissolution process. After the family law clerk enters the judge’s order into the court records, the two parties are no longer spouses. Most dissos are fairly straightforward and take from a minimum of 6 to an average of 10 or 12 months from start to finish. The parties’ lives go on during the process, and they can move right ahead as they divide up their assets and debts, separate their mutual interests, and leave their relationship behind.

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Often, though, there are disagreements about how to divide assets – the family home, investment and retirement accounts, home furnishings – even the family dog or cat. Strongly held beliefs and emotional feelings can make it really tough to reach agreement on the division of property. It is especially difficult if one spouse came into the marriage with a lot fewer assets than the other. The process here can sometimes escalate into a really complex set of actions, taking a year or two or more to resolve. Strongly held differences between spouses may require more court hearings, and often involve mediation sessions with professionals trained to try to find common ground for couples who disagree. Only one thing is perfectly clear in these situations - the attorney fees will grow bigger with every step in the process. From time to time, we hear about nasty divorces and property fights between celebrity spouses – often involving huge sums of money. But ordinary people dig in and refuse to agree to a settlement just as easily and often as the rich and famous. The value of their disputed property may be a lot less, and there may be no publicity, but the emotional toll, wasted time and relative financial expense are just as great. In the end, there must be a fair and equitable division of marital property. California is a community property state. This means that most property acquired during the marriage and available to both spouses is shared equally, and must be divided equally. Property that was acquired by a spouse before the marriage is usually considered the separate property of that spouse, and may not be

required to be shared with the other spouse. This where a married couple often has serious trouble understanding what “fair and equitable” means during a disso. The property to be divided is marital property, not usually separate property. Tempers can begin to flare, and attorney fees start to balloon when there is a major disagreement about property division. Once in a while, it is found that separate property should be shared, to reach an equitable agreement for both parties. Such assets have to be reviewed in great detail, and attorneys often have to research the circumstances, locate relevant case law, and, ultimately, will need to secure the judge’s opinion and approval.

NEED FOOD?

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SURVIVE A BREAKUP AND COME AWAY IN ONE PIECE? TRY THESE IDEAS: No one wants to plan for dissolution, but with divorce rates among the general population at 50% or more, it could definitely happen to you. If you did not create a Premarital Agreement before your marriage, enter into a Post-marital Agreement now. It will clearly identify the property that belongs to each of you and to you together as a couple. Then, if dissolution comes your way, you will have the basis for your Marital Settlement Agreement already prepared, and both of you will have a clear path to division of property and debts. If dissolution appears to be in your future, go immediately to an attorney for advice about how to handle your financial affairs. An early understanding of your rights and the property that you share with your spouse can make a huge difference in the disso process, and greatly lower the cost of attorney fees. Consider the options you have: An easy and smooth disso where both parties agree on division of property and debts; or a rocky road which will delay the dissolution of your marriage, and cost a lot of money. If you find yourself caught up in emotional turmoil because of disagreement about the breakup, find a good therapist who can help you through the process. The disso will proceed, whether you want it to or not. Take steps that help you navigate it with strength, not angst.

EATING RIGHT A TRAVEL ESSENTIAL BY JILL LANGHAM

As a person who travels abroad a few times a year, I felt you might appreciate knowing a few of my secrets for maintaining a healthy Eating Plan while on the road because it can really be challenging. Because I choose to eat 6 times a day, I usually resort to carrying some meal replacement protein bars. I believe in using these as a last resort while at home but on the road find them necessary to keep my metabolism high. My body has become used to eating every 3 to than 4 hours. If I am in between the main meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, I find that munching on a bar that provides me with up to 30 grams of protein, 20-25 grams of carbohydrates and a bit more fat than I’d prefer of 7-10 grams of fat yielding about 180280 calories keeps my metabolism up, which helps me burn more fat while keeping my muscle intact. Back in the day the focus was always on our weight. But we have come to learn that it is not the number on the scale that’s

34 THESTANDARDPS.COM

important as much as the percentage of fat in our bodies. Therefore, it’s critical that we have more muscle on our bodies, which keeps us burning fat. I always thought it was unfair that body builders could eat more calories and burn more fat, until I decided to become one! Even more important is the fact that strong muscles support and protect our joints and bones keeping us safe and healthy. I suspect we all know someone who is suffering or has suffered from Osteoporosis, Arthritis, or Hip, Knee, and/or Shoulder Replacement and has had one problem after another. I’d like to avoid any of these problems and feel that by eating clean foods 6 times a day, doing cardiovascular exercise and weight training keeps my body and me healthy. If you’re a person who travels for work you know how difficult it is to eat healthily at airports. Here are a few tricks that I’ve used that you may find helpful. Most food courts have grilled chicken on their menus and usually one kiosk that sells rice. I typically order 2

grilled chicken sandwiches hold the bread. I order one serving of plain rice, preferably brown but believe it or not body builders use white rice after a workout because it’s metabolized more quickly and gets the glucose into the muscles, so I do eat it. If there is a Wendy’s around I will order a plain baked potato and place the grilled chicken on top. If there’s a place that serves grilled fish tacos I will order the fish with no taco shell to avoid the gluten or corn and use plain rice or the potato again. Be advised though that a serving of rice is only 1/2 of a cup and since it’s so cheap restaurants will always serve on the average 2 cups of rice which is a huge amount of empty calories that will be stored as fat! Also, be mindful that rice pilaf contains gluten and fat making it a poor choice, as well. I am a believer in eating complex carbohydrates, like rice, potatoes, yams and sweet potatoes but limit my intake to 1/4-1/2 of a cup of them in 2 meals a day. The other 4 meals consist of 1-2 cups of fibrous vegetables along with a good source of protein, like chicken breast, turkey breast, egg whites, white fish or salmon, and occasionally lean beef. Many airport kiosks now offer salads (for outrageous prices) with about 1-2 ounces of protein on them. Since I choose to eat 5 oz. of protein at each meal, I often times take a frozen chicken/turkey breast in my carry on bag to add to my salad, ensuring that I get what I know my body needs. Lastly, it’s come to my awareness that many counties will not allow American foods to be imported into their counties due to the additives that we load our foods with. As a result I usually lose about 3-5 pounds when I travel abroad because the foods I’m eating are organic and have very little additives in them. It’s both upsetting and disturbing to me that as a world leader; the USA is at fault for making and keeping us ill. But, that my friends is a topic for another month! To your health! Xoxo

WELLNESS

5 SIMPLE STEPS TO BE YOUR BEST AT ANY AGE They say you’re only as young as you feel, and if you’re an older American, the ability to feel young a little while longer is always appealing. Having a youthful state of mind goes a long way toward accomplishing this goal, but you can’t ignore the importance of solid physical health. To improve your physical and mental health and prove age is just a number, apply these five tips from Mayo Clinic today. Find the perfect interval. If you’ve never participated in highintensity interval training before, here’s a compelling reason to start. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found high-intensity aerobic exercise actually reversed some cellular aspects of aging. The research also found that the exercise improved muscle proteins, enlarged muscles and increased energy levels. The benefit of brain games. A sharp mind is every bit as important as a healthy body, and exercising your brain can be a lot of fun. Spend time learning new things on the internet, enroll in a class for that craft you’ve always wanted to master, go out with friends or sit down and play a board game. All of these activities can greatly improve your mental health. For example, a Mayo Clinic study found playing games decreased a person’s risk of mild cognitive impairment by 22 percent making this enjoyable activity healthy as well. Supplementing your health. Health supplements should never completely replace whole food offerings, but they may offer you real health value as well. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, supplements may be ideal for vegans and vegetarians or those who consume less than 1,600 calories per day. People with a condition affecting the way their body absorbs nutrients and those who have had surgery on their digestive tract should also speak with their doctor about supplements that may improve their overall health. The importance of sleep. A good night’s sleep offers health benefits at any age, but getting enough rest can be more difficult as you get older. To get a better night’s sleep, review your medications with your doctor to see if anything is impacting your rest. You should also try to limit your daytime napping (just 10 to 20 minutes per day is best) and avoid alcohol, caffeine or even water within a couple hours before bedtime.

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Focus on your sexual health. This topic may not be as widely discussed as your physical or mental health, but it is no less important. Men should talk to their doctors about their lessening testosterone levels, which drop about 1 percent per year after age 30. Women may experience a similar drop in estrogen levels as well and should consult their doctor for treatment options. Don’t be shy about discussing sexual health issues with your doctor, from STDs to annual checkups, having a thorough understanding of your current sexual health - and what you need to do to protect or improve it - will benefit every other part of your life.

With aging comes new challenges and the need to be more vigilant in maintaining your overall well-being. By incorporating some of the tips above from the experts at Mayo Clinic, you’ll make sure the best years of your life are still to come. You can learn more about improving your health at any age through the advice offered in Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging, or visit www.mayoclinic. org/healthy-lifestyle for more healthy lifestyle ideas.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED… BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER The pile of holiday cards has finally been dispensed. They’ve been sitting in a lump on the counter for months, and you just now got around to sorting them. Some were too beautiful to let go; others had messages you wanted to save, some had addresses you needed, a couple pictures fell on your lap, and you also found at least one gift card for a bookstore. Uh oh. Is it still good? Probably, yes. So why not go look for one of these great books? FICTION Are you in the mood for a good novel? Of course you are! So you’ll want to look for “Copycat” by Kimberla Lawson Roby. It’s a skinny little book about friendship and obsession, and how one can ruin the other. Historians who crave a novel based in history will love “The Women in the Castle” by Jessica Shattuck. It’s a story of three women who pull together at the end of World War II. Be prepared to clear your calendar and read, read, read. Who doesn’t love a bit of suspense? Not you, you love that kind of thing, so you’ll want to read “Gone Without a Trace” by Mary Torjussen. It’s a tale of a woman whose boyfriend has disappeared completely. But is he really gone? Gotta read this book to find out… NONFICTION If you’re someone who loves to look at old buildings while you’re on vacation, consider reading “Fallen Glory: The Lives and Deaths of History’s Greatest Buildings” by James Crawford before this summer’s getaway. This book tackles some of the most iconic things mankind has ever built, why they were so well known, and why you can’t visit them this summer. This is a big book, so read it now, before you get on the plane; it might be too big to haul. But here’s a book you can easily tuck in your carry-on: “The NotQuite States of America” by Doug Mack. It’s a book about the U.S. territories, how they influence the mainland, and why you should consider visiting them very soon. One more? Look for “The Handy New York City Answer Book” by Chris Barsanti, which will explain (almost) everything you ever wanted to know about The Big Apple but didn’t know where to ask. Reading should be restful, right? So why do you feel so guilty when you’re reading? In “Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less” by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, you’ll feel better with a book in your lap because you’ll see how you’re actually getting things done. There.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Doesn’t that help? And if you really want to work hard, then put your imagination to play and read “The Creative Spark” by Agustin Fuentes, to see how creativity and imagination have changed humankind. While you’re using your gift card, also look for “Language at the Speed of Sight” by Mark Seidenberg. It’s about reading, literacy, and what can be done to teach both, better. Politics seems to be on everyone’s mind – especially politics and economy – and in “Glass House” by Brian Alexander, you’ll get a look at what happens to a town when its largest employer falters. If you liked “Hillbilly Elegy,” this should be next on your list. Another book you might want to check out is “Walking to Listen” by Andrew Forsthoefel, about the author’s journey across the nation, to see what we, as a country, have to say. Readers with stars in their eyes may want to take a look at “What Love Is” by Carrie Jenkins. It’s a book that examines love in all its forms, including some that go against the mainstream grain. And if that isn’t where you’re at in life, then look for “The Optimist’s Guide to Divorce” by Suzanne Riss & Jill Sockwell. Yep, it’s a handy book to have, if you need it. You’ve seen the story on TV, so now read “Convicting Avery” by Michael D. Cicchini. This book takes a deep look at Netflix’s Making a Murderer and what it has to do with Wisconsin’s criminal justice system, as well as that of America as a whole. PETS AND ANIMALS What would a wild animal say to you, if it could? Animal communicator Amelia Kinkade knows, and in “Whispers from the Wild,” you’ll see how you can learn to hear animals and perhaps communicate with them. Nature lovers will delight in this book, as will anyone who shares their life with the finned, furred, or winged. Believe it or not, “Ice Bear” by Michael Engelhard isn’t just for lovers of polar bears. No, ecologists will enjoy it, too, as will environmentally minded readers, animal lovers, culture mavens, and watchers of the Arctic. Bonus: lots of pictures! HISTORY With your gift certificate, I’d invite you to take a trip back a hundred years. You don’t have to leave your home, but you will need “The Original Black Elite: Daniel Murray and the Story of a Forgotten Era” by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor. This is the true story of the then-assistant librarian at the Library of Congress, and his contemporaries: doctors, lawyers, senators, ministers, business owners, all African American. It’s a story of grandeur, culture, fine

things, and betrayal. You will be stunned. As a fan of history, you know there’s always a dark side, and “Plotting to Kill the President” by Mel Ayton tells a bit of it. This is a book that steps back to the nation’s first days but, surprisingly, only goes up to early 20th century assassination attempts. That means you won’t find JFK in there, nor Ronald Reagan – but you will find an interesting bit of American history. Also take a look at “Rivals Unto Death: Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr” by Rick Beyer. Written by an author who’s delved into quirky history, this book is also a bit of biography. BIOGRAPHY Students of history – especially that of World War II – will eat up “Irena’s Children” by Tilar J. Mazzeo. It’s the true story of public health expert Irena Sendler and her brave actions: Irena smuggled Jewish children from the ghettos of Warsaw and saved their lives. Yes, you need to read this book. Though he’s been gone many years now, there’s always interest in “The Real James Dean,” and in this new book edited by Peter L. Winkler, you’ll learn what his friends and contemporaries thought about Hollywood’s bad boy. All those things you think you know about Leonardo Da Vinci? You may want to put them aside after you’ve read “Becoming Leonardo” by Mike Lankford. This biography peeks into the life

and quirks of the Master as it takes you back several centuries to Renaissance Italy, and a slice of history. HEALTH and MEDICINE Mystery fans should be eager to find “The Family Gene” by Joselin Linder. It’s a true story of a medical whodunit: at a very young age, Linder began suffering from a malady that baffled doctors, only to learn that the same symptoms affected many in her family tree. This book is as thrilling as any novel – maybe more so, because it’s true. If you’re looking for something, sadly, that’s not exactly pleasure reading, then maybe “Life After the Diagnosis” by Steven Pantilat, MD may be what you need. This is a book for patients and caregivers, and may help sort out feelings, treatments, and thoughts beyond the news you’ve heard. Hint: family members may benefit from reading it, too. If you’re still at a loss as to what to do with that gift card, send it to me (I’m kidding!). No, seriously, take it to your local bookstore and throw yourself at the mercy of the bookseller. They’re experts in making you happy with a book in your hand, and they can even suggest a nice bookmark, too. Happy Reading!

RAPH SOLO’S LOVE LIVES THIS SUMMER BY JOHN STEIN

In “Love Lives,” pop singer Raph Solo boldly declares that he is no less equal than any other person for who he is or who he loves. “I have worked very hard to gain the self-respect and acceptance I enjoy today,” he explains. “It’s been a difficult journey but I’m finally at a point where I know that I don’t need anyone’s approval to feel comfortable in my own skin.” Written and produced by Solo, “Love Lives” is an R&B, modern pop groove; melodic with an edgy tech feel. Sonically, it’s very different from Solo’s previous tracks, and for good reason. Solo has

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

evolved since his last album, Good Morning London, and “Love Lives” reflects his current state of artistry. “I wanted to take my sound onto the streets and into the clubs,” he says. “These days, more and more damning rhetoric is being directed at anyone who belongs to a minority. I’m a minority, not only of the LGBT community, but of race as well.” He says he wasn’t originally planning to release the song. He recorded it on his birthday as a special gift to himself. Ultimately, however, he felt the message in “Love Lives” was too important to keep to himself. He saw it as his duty to let it be heard.

The message is simple: “Love is Love”. It’s a sentiment that entered the mainstream vernacular when Lin-Manuel Miranda passionately declared it during his Orlando tribute at the 2016 Tony Awards, however, Solo has expressed similar feelings in many of his songs, including “Glass of Wine,” his hit track from 2013. “People’s attitudes towards one another needs to change,” he says. “Too many people speak in the name of God with no divine authority. Who is anyone to judge another human being? Focus on yourself, practice love and work toward being a better person before seeking to change another person. I respect the rights of others to dislike me for who I am and who I love as long as they respect my right to be me and they do not infringe on my freedom and right to love who I want to love.” Born to Lebanese/Chilean parents on the Gulf of Guinea in Nigeria, West Africa, Raph Solo is a singer, songwriter and music producer. He has released three full-length albums, including last summer’s THE ANONYMOUS ICON, featuring “Star” and “Good Morning London”. Today, he is a proud gay man in a loving relationship — with an English man from the East Midlands who shares his core values and beliefs — but it wasn’t always that way. Just a few years ago, he fought his feelings for men and even underwent reparative therapy in an attempt to cure himself of his homosexuality. In the end, it was even more damaging to Solo and his self-esteem. “It made me feel like a failure because no matter how hard I tried, I could not change my feelings.” Along with the release of “Love Lives,” Solo is unveiling a brand new music video that shows a different side to the artist. “I dance a lot in this one! It’s all very tongue-and cheek compared to my previous story-based, cinematic music videos. I hope fans like the choreography and chutzpah.” In the meantime, Raph Solo is putting the finishing touches on his next full-length album. “I had hoped to get it out this year but it’s not going to be ready in time,” he explains. “I don’t believe in rushing things. It’s a new sound for me so it’s taking a little more time to master but I have faith that the final product will be worth the wait.” Raph Solo’s “Love Lives” is being released globally through Angel King Musique and is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon as well all other online retail outlets. Its music video is available on YouTube.

HOT SUMMER HITS SUMMER USHERS IN NEW SMOKIN’ BEATS BY MAX JIMENEZ

Remember when Carly Rae Jepson ruled the summer airwaves of 2012 with “Call Me Maybe”? Or how about when Pharrell’s “Happy” was the universal anthem of summer joy in 2013? Every summer ushers in a new selection of explosive hits that are meant to heat up dance radio and club floors. Here are the indie artists that top dance floor DJs are predicting will set gay dance floors on fire this summer.

KRISTII “Lightening” / Urgent Entertainment What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling”. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Lightning” is a blast and a real banger. It’s an R&B, hip-pop song that makes ya wanna dance the first second you hear it. What inspired the track? I was given a corset to wear at a photoshoot. It made me feel really sexy and girly and it gave me an impulse to write the song. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Adonis did an amazing remix. He’s a Grammy Winning producer who has worked with Chris Brown, Ciara, and JLo. What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? A scientist. It would be so cool to create experiments and invent something new. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Thank you for being there for me in this not-at-all easy journey! I hope you have a cheerful, happy summer with lots of sunshine! Follow Kristii on Facebook @KristiiOfficial and Instagram @ kristii_music. KENDRA ERIKA “Under My Skin” / Dauman Music

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

What was your favorite song from last summer? Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” because it got me moving every time it came on the radio. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Under Your Skin” is perfect for daytime and nighttime. You can amp up your summer pool parties with it, and then later on, blast it out at the club. It’s a “big room” track that allows you to escape, which is what a lot of us are looking to do this summer. What inspired the track? Believe it or not, Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Every remix offer a different experience. If I’m in one mood, I’ll listen to one remix, and if I’m in another, I’ll throw on a different version of the track. What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? I love writing, so I’d be an author writing enlightening books, or any kind of inspirational and reflective pieces. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Don’t worry about where the world is going. Think about where you’re going and enjoy your growth and empowerment. Let the music get under your skin and create your own oasis. Follow Kendra Erika on Facebook @ KendraErikaMusic, Twitter @Kendra_Erika and Instagram @ KendraErika.

RICKY REBEL “If You Were My Baby” / Ricky Rebel Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance”; His voice is sensual and low and I love the beat. Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “If You Were My Baby” makes you feel so good. The beat and arrangement are a throw back to the 80’s. Producer Sam Harmonix used the exact synth Prince used to make some of his records. I feel Prince’s spirit when I hear the song. What inspired the track? Sam sent the instrumental to me and I listened to it while driving in my car. The lyrics just poured out of me. This is a song I would use to let someone know I was into them. Sometimes songs are a better way to communicate than words alone.

terms with the idea that some things need to end in order to start anew. It’s a seductive track that drips with passion. What inspired the track? Where all good music comes from: a bad break up! Ha! Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I’m in love with the Culture Code remix! What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? I have been doing this so long that everything else is so foreign. Maybe a plastic surgeon? What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Be yourself, be proud, go wild and never let anyone judge you for being unique. Follow DJ Pebbles on Facebook @ DjPebblesMusic.

Do you have a favorite remix of the track? Tommy Sunshine’s mix is amazing. He is the Godfather of EDM, for heavens sake. I also love the mix by DJ Hector Fonseca. A whole package of remixes, ”If You Were My Baby (Remixes),” will be released on Hector’s label, AUDIO4PLAY Records. What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? I’d be a fitness guru. Eventually, I’d like to merge my love of fitness and music together and create my own fitness brand and studios called Ricky Rebel Fitness, which will teach people the fundamentals of good health that I’ve learned from my musical journey. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? My message is to rebel against the darkness and shine your light. Life is short. We need to have some fun. Follow Ricky Rebel on Facebook and Twitter @ RickyRebelRocks, and Instagram @ RickyRebel. DJ PEBBLES “Heart Away from You” Friendship Collective What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance” because it’s so sexy! Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? “Heart Away From You” is about forbidden love and coming to

KIMBERLY DAVIS “My Fire” / Mr. Tan Man Music What was your favorite song from last summer? Drake’s “One Dance” had me happily dancing all summer long! Why will your song be this summer’s hottest jam? Mike Greenley, Audrey Martells and the incredible Tony Moran wrote “My Fire”. It is the most amazing song! Then the legendary Nile Rodgers added the most perfect rhythms to take it over the top. What inspired the track? The idea for “My Fire” is that even on the darkest of days, there is a fire inside each of us that is ready to light the path forward to the place we’re meant to be. Do you have a favorite remix of the track? I love them all! What would you be doing if you weren’t making music? Bored somewhere, driving everyone around me crazy because music is the one thing that makes me happy. It is my fire. What’s your message to gay fans this summer? Be humble and always stay fierce!
