MODERNISM WEEK RETURNS! BY BOB BOGARD Modernism Week’s signature February festival takes place February 15 - 25, 2024, highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. The popular annual 11-day festival will feature more than 400 events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show, tours of iconic homes in more than 35 neighborhoods and communities, walking tours, and nightly parties. Also offered are a range of architectural double-decker bus tours, several fashion-related events, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, a classic car show, landscape talks and garden tours, walking and biking tours, and a series of compelling and informative talks with world-class speakers. All events are open to the public and tickets are on sale now at modernismweek.com. Some events sell out quickly due to limited capacity. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit Modernism Week (a non-profit organization) and other local preservation, neighborhood, and community groups. “We are thrilled that Modernism Week is returning for its 19th year in Palm Springs,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, Modernism Week CEO. “We are excited about the compelling new programs this year, including an emphasis on architect Albert Frey’s work. We have expanded our architectural bus tours, and will offer a variety of parties, educational talks, vintage fashion events, and live entertainment options. We are very pleased to be offering CAMP, our headquarters, again inside the Hyatt Palm Springs. We invite the public to join us for eleven amazing days of festivities.”

COVER SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS INCLUDE: Modernism Week Featured Home Tour: Wexler ‘54, 2/16 – 2/19 and 2/23 – 2/25, $40 This tour of the recently renovated and historically designated Wexler ’54 is a must-see. Located in the Deepwell Estates neighborhood, this Wexler-Harrison home is a quintessential example of post and beam residential design and a model of thoughtful architectural preservation. The current homeowners worked with architect and preservation consultant Susan Secoy Jensen, AIA, to develop an architectural plan and pursue a historic designation to protect and preserve the home, which was granted in 2022. H3K Home + Design took the profile of the 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home back to its roots to retain the best of midcentury style and elegance while creating a home that supported today’s lifestyle inside and out. Modernism Week sponsors Baldwin, Brizo, California Closets, DunnEdwards, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, Flor, JennAir and Willis generously contributed to this stunning and soulful renovation. Modernism Week Featured Home: The Shag House, 2/16-2/19 and 2/23-2/25, $40. The artist Shag has reimagined a cherished midcentury modern pool home in the Little Beverly Hills neighborhood of Palm Springs to create a fully immersive tour experience that will make visitors feel as though they have climbed into a life-size Shag painting. Shag has drawn upon his architectural studies and the aesthetic of his artwork to reimagine this classic 1958 home, originally designed for the Alexander Construction Company. For the core of the house, Shag preserved much of the original Palmer & Krisel layout of this classic Alexander design, but created an entirely new front exterior, expanded the front entry, and converted the original breezeway into a swank party lounge. Modernism Week sponsors Brizo, California Closets, Dunn-Edwards Paints, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting, JennAir, and Willis generously contributed to this project. Stories Untold: Honoring Diverse Voices, Illuminating Untold Stories and Forging Connections with the Past Through Architecture and Landscape Design (2/19, free) Since 2022, Modernism Week has presented Stories Untold, focused on the history and narratives of architects and design professionals historically left out of the spotlight. This year Stories Untold celebrates recently constructed buildings and venues designed to illuminate untold stories, honor diverse voices, and foster meaningful connections with the past. Sharing this story will be esteemed guests Dr. Tonya Matthews (President and CEO of IAAM), Walter Hood (renowned landscape architect, MacArthur ‘Genius Grant’ Fellow, and designer of IAAM’s African Ancestors Memorial Garden), Gabrielle Bullock (Director of Global Diversity at the international architectural design firm, Perkins&Will, which co-

A live band, lavish libations, and all-night party bites will fuel the disco inferno. 1970s disco club-inspired dress is encouraged. Generous support and gorgeous lighting provided by the evening’s presenting sponsor, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Extraordinary entertainment provided by Steve Tobin & Johnny Krupa and The Grace Helen Spearman Charitable Foundation. PROFILE O’BAYLEY COMMUNICATIONS CELEBRATES TWENTY YEARS IN BUSINESS BY BOB BOGARD

O’Bayley Communications proudly announces the celebration of its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of excellence in the vibrant business landscape of Palm Springs. Since its inception in February of 2004, O’Bayley Communications has been a cornerstone of innovation and communication solutions in the local community. Specializing in marketing for non-profit organizations, the company has played a pivotal role in supporting businesses, organizations, and individuals in achieving their communications goals. Founder and CEO Tim O’Bayley expresses gratitude for the continuous support from clients, partners, and the Palm Springs community. “Celebrating twenty years is a remarkable milestone for O’Bayley Communications, and we owe our success to the incredible individuals and organizations that have entrusted us with their communication needs over the years. We are honored to be part of the Palm Springs business community and look forward to many more years of collaboration and growth.” What began as a ‘one-man-show’ has flourished, endured a recession and a pandemic, and continues to innovate. The firm offers expertise in public relations services, graphic design, advertising planning and placement, and the marketing strategies to make it all work. While reflecting on the milestone, O’Bayley said, “Our success wouldn’t have been possible – or at least not as much fun – without such talented individuals as Nicky Vallee, Kerry Hendrix, Dayna Buompensiero nee Smith, Blake Holiday, and Jeffrey Price on the team over the years. Today I have two highly talented and enterprising people working with me to serve our clients: Director of Public Relations Bob Bogard and Director of Advertising and Graphic Designer Clinton Meyer. Of course, we rely on all the great folks in the local media and other related businesses – photographers, ad reps, illustrators, writers, news directors, and web developers – and we partner with other companies in Palm Springs (David Perry & Associates, Imagine It! Media, Kaminsky Productions, Momentous Events) and Los Angeles (Bergman PR and Secret Agent).” The firm is proud to have helped some major entities tell their stories, including Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, College of the Desert Foundation, and Coyote StageWorks. Currently they work with AAP – Food Samaritans, Bodyworks Physical Therapy Clinic, Braille Institute Coachella Valley, Modernism Week, Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, and Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival among several others. With O’Bayley managing the firm, they are particularly delighted to have assisted the City of Palm Springs with several initiatives/ campaigns, from the redistricting public education outreach of 2018 (and 2021) to the COVID-19 public safety campaign in 2020/21. Current major initiatives include the Plaza Theatre restoration fundraising campaign and their continuing work with Modernism Week, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025. He adds: “Our strong suit is working with non-profit organizations and their special events needs. We have produced and promoted annual fundraising and awareness-building events for several non-profit organizations – including the legendary ‘Evening Under the Stars’ for AAP – Food Samaritans and ‘Stepping Out’ for College of the Desert Foundation – and that’s a large part of how we’ve built a strong reputation here in the Coachella Valley.” While they serve traditional for-profit businesses as well, such as H3K Home & Design, Flooring Innovations, and Desert Hand Car Wash, all of their clients benefit from O’Bayley’s personal experience in working with non-profit organizations. Of All The People In All The World has toured the world since its inception in 2003, landing at top international venues, including The Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the World Financial Center in New York, adapting to the times and contexts in which it is found. President of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation, Pamela Jordan says: “We are thrilled to welcome Stan’s Café to the Idyllwild Arts campus because this collaboration reflects many synergies between both organizations where the spirit of a Citizen Artist is the focus. This unique opportunity bolsters our ability to foster creative, innovative, curious, globally minded problem solvers. I have no doubt that our students will be enriched and inspired by this experience and Stan’s Café will be inspired by our talented, young artists and mountaintop village.”

Established in 1991 and based in Birmingham UK, Stan’s Cafe is a group of artists from a variety of disciplines, but mostly theatre makers, working under the artistic direction of James Yarker. The company consists of an evolving team of long-term collaborators and associated artists, the lineup changes according to the project being worked upon. Artistic Director of Stan’s Café, James Yarker says “We can’t wait to collaborate with the young creatives at Idyllwild Arts Academy. The students will share with us their vision of the world, we will teach them how our show works and together we will research and make a wonderful new version of Of All The People In All The World”. For more information, visit:

The rice is carefully measured to represent human population statistics. These statistics are drawn from the most reputable sources available. Each grain of rice equals one person and over a period of days, a team of performers carefully weigh out quantities of rice to represent a host of human statistics. These statistics are arranged in labelled piles, creating an ever-changing landscape of rice. Their juxtapositions can be moving, shocking, celebratory, witty and thought-provoking. That’s it. This installation is that simple—and that elegantly complex. Since its debut, Of All The People In All The World has used this deceptively straightforward concept to communicate statistics that are otherwise difficult if not impossible to grasp. After the performance the rice will be donated to charities and recycled.

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

It’s the truth. Scout’s honor. Pinky swear. Spit on your palms or prick your fingers and shake hands. As a child, you had many ways to show that you intended to keep a promise when you made it and your word was your bond, but you’ve grown up. Today, you cross your heart but, as in the new novel “Blood Sisters” by Vanessa Lillie, you hope no one has to die. She wasn’t looking for skeletal remains. For Bureau of Indian Affairs archaeologist Syd Walker, such a find was very unusual but not unknown. Odd things happen during geological surveys on tribal lands everywhere. Still, the gruesome recovery in Rhode Island wasn’t top on Syd’s mind. She’d gotten a call that her sister, Emma Lou, was missing in Oklahoma. Again. Fifteen years before, as Syd, Emma Lou, and Luna, who they’d considered a sister, were chilling in Luna’s family’s trailer, a group of men broke in. Wearing masks, the “devils” killed Luna and her parents, and the small town of Picher, was never the same. Neither were Emma Lou or Syd. As a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Syd was well aware of the problems near her hometown, the issues Native Americans had there with the BIA, and her own ancestors’ efforts to survive on land that was given and then snatched back. She also knew the fact that she had a wife at home in Rhode Island set her apart since she’d left. And drugs – too many people on tribal allotments were getting drugs too easily. But someone wanted Syd to come home: a female skull was found in the crook of a tree with her old work badge in its mouth. Despite knowing that Syd had fled Oklahoma on purpose, her new boss at the BIA pulled strings to arrange the trip and assigned her the case. Years ago, Syd had promised to protect Luna and Emma Lou. One of them was already dead. The other was missing. Was the skull a threat – or a warning? Here is the best advice you’re going to get when you grab “Blood Sisters”: pay close attention to the minutiae. Without being a spoiler, little things mean a lot. Unless you watch carefully, you’ll be cruising along at 200 miles an hour in a screaming run through pages and pages of barely bearable excitement when suddenly, your brain will make that scratchy sound like a stopped record album. It’s there where author Vanessa Lillie drops three tons of TNT, right towards the almost-end of her story

and whoa, Nelly. If you’re not paying attention, you may have to read the chapter multiple times to cut your “What the...?” down to a manageable level. Yeah, this is that kind of book, the kind that’s written with authenticity, an insider’s feel, and heightened tension that’ll keep you awake. The kind that you think you know how it’ll end and you’re wrong. For mystery lovers or thriller fans, “Blood Sisters” is the kind of book you should scout out. “Blood Sisters” by Vanessa Lillie c.2023, Berkley $27.00 384 pages

Q&A LATIN POP SENSATION JAIME ADRIAN BY JAMIE BOOTH

Latin Pop sensation Jaime Adriane Turn-of-the-Millennium vibes and in No Agenda, his new album features a slick re-imagining of the late nineties dance classic, “If You Could Read My Mind.” If listeners pick up an early 2000s vibe in Jaime Adrian’s new album, they should know it was intentional. “I think my brain is stuck in the early millennium because that era of music was simply fun with no agenda and that’s the kind of vibe I live by,” he explains. In fact, he titled the album, No Agenda, and in it, he dips into multiple genres of dance music from Latin beat to country twists, house tracks and euro pop. “I didn’t want people to say it all sounds the same.” The out, Latino artist grew up on the east side of Chicago in a very Catholic neighborhood. He recalls kids making fun of him for his love of singing, calling it “not something a real man would do” and for years, they managed to silence his voice. Then The X Factor came calling. Jaime Adrian flew to Kansas City and after performing for the preliminary judges, he learned he had made it to the live show auditions! The show did not go as planned, however. After being crucified by the judges, he spent the rest of the day crying in his hotel room from embarrassment, determined to stop singing.

“If you would have told me then that I’d have a completed album in 2024, I wouldn’t have believed it,” he acknowledges today. “This journey has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it’s worth it to take a chance on life and to keep shooting for the stars.”

Why did you title your debut album, No Agenda? Jaime Adrian: What I mean by the title is that I’m not trying to shove my views, politics, religion, sexuality, or ethnicity down anyone’s throats. I made No Agenda because I simply wanted a good pop album that reflects on the work of musicians who influenced me growing up. Isn’t pushing lifestyle and politics what millennials are known for? Jaime Adrian: (Laughing) Not me! From a young age, I learned that showing kindness is more effective than screaming or bullying people into thinking my way. I would rather be known as a kind human than simply a gay or Latino artist, or one of the other labels I happen to be. Ever since I was a kid I’ve been stereotyped, and I’ve hated it. I never seemed to fit in anywhere. Today, I just want to do me and as long as I’m not hurting anyone, I should be allowed to do so. A cool thing I was told recently is that I inspire other people who, like me, don’t fit the typical mold. I love that. What inspired you to remake “If You Could Read My Mind”? Jaime Adrian: My producer, Velvet Code, thought that it would be cool to do a cover of an iconic nineties dance song. “If You Could

Read My Mind” was the first that came to mind. It’s a song I’ve always been obsessed with since I first heard it in the 1998 film, 54. Let me guess, did young Jaime Adrian have a crush on Ryan Phillipe? Jaime Adrian: Hell yeah! Between 54, Cruel Intentions, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, I used to want to have curly blonde hair just like him. That face, body, even the way he talks makes me melt. Who did you love more as a teen, Ryan or Britney Spears? Jaime Adrian: Oh, Britney Spears without a doubt. Britney’s a triple threat! She dances, sings, acts and I just love the personality she projects in her interviews. Tell us about performing live in front of Britney on TV’s The X Factor. Jaime Adrian: It was probably the most traumatic thing I’ve experienced in my life. I was bullied and made fun of in front of the woman who has shaped my career and she just sat there and looked uncomfortable. I still have nightmares about it to this day. What I should have said or done… I can’t change the past now.

Q&A Do you have hard feelings? Jaime Adrian: Not with Britney. I’m more upset with the male judges for trying to break me down. I used to love Louie Walsh on The X Factor UK. I can’t stand the sight of him anymore. LA Reid is no better. What about Demi Lovato? Jaime Adrian: Demi was kind. She complimented my voice but said I needed to pick better songs. However, I didn’t get to pick the song for The X Factor. When the producers learned how much I loved Britney, they convinced me that she would want to hear me perform one of her songs. I fell for it. Producers can be mean! Jaime Adrian: They can be nice, too. I especially loved one of the show’s producers, Elaina. She discovered me in the crowd during the audition process and really pushed for me to get as far as I could on the show. We remain great friends to this day, and she has continued to be a big supporter of my music. What inspired you to complete No Agenda? Jaime Adrian: After I released my single, “Feed My Ego,” people came out of the woodwork, complimenting my work. At first, I thought they were making fun of me, but the more songs my producer and I released, the more praise we received. And you saved and paid for the album out of your own pocket? Jaime Adrian: Yes, I continue to work six days a week to pay for all of this myself and still find the time to make the music and pay my bills. My two dogs aren’t cheap either, so it’s been a journey, for sure. A worthwhile journey, wouldn’t you say?

Jaime Adrian: I want nothing more than to reach people I will probably never meet and to hold the hand of someone I will likely never actually feel. If one of my songs touches another soul, then it’s been worth it. Jaime Adrian’s No Agenda is being distributed by So Fierce Music/The Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment and is available on all digital platforms. Follow Jaime Adrian on Instagram @ jaimeadrianreyes

PERSPECTIVE PEN TO PAPER BY JILL LANGHAM

I am hoping that the first month of 2024 has been a good one for you. We are off and running and I am personally feeling like things for me are heading in the right direction, for which I am grateful. The month of January has been filled with many life lessons beginning with the birth of my youngest brother on January 20th, 1961, which was also President J.F.Kennedy’s inauguration day. I was 6-1/2 at the time and pretty much realized that my life as the youngest would be forever changed and I somehow knew that it was time for me to take care of myself. Being a third child has its challenges and if you’ve been around long enough, I’m sure you’ve seen or heard about some of the issues we face. But that conversation is for another day. Four years later on January 22, 1965, I was run over by a car while sledding down a small hill in our front yard. The sled-run ended in a private road that saw very little traffic, that is until that night. I ended up with a 3rd degree burn on my left-inner calf and had to undergo 2 skin grafts over the next 2 years and have a life-long scar. Another event that changed my life, as well. But it wasn’t until January 19, 1981, that my life took a very dark turn. I was returning home from a therapy session on a very cold, dark, snowy night when I chose to fight the voice in my head that told me I was being followed. My inability to hear myself resulted in my getting raped at gunpoint. I am certain that I had PTSD from at least the car accident, if not a bit from my brother’s birth, but I definitely had it after the rape. It has taken years of therapy for me to understand all the long-term effects of that night, but I am finally on the other side of it and happily enjoy sex again! Thank GOD! But even more importantly, I know how to trust my inner voice, my instincts and myself. I share all this to say that for years, January was one of the hardest months of the year for me but not because I ever put two and two together. Then back in 2016, when I realized that I had forgotten about all those anniversaries, I decided to write a few words about each one of them. After the first 4500 words which flew onto the paper and with the help of my then author-client, I began

42 THESTANDARDPS.COM

writing my memoire (and yes, I know that in the US the word does not have an “e” on the end of it, but I think it is sexier!) which I finished 6 weeks later. I then needed to find an editor which took time, and then I was finally able to self-publish it a year later. I can’t tell you how satisfying it was to share my story and how much it ended up connecting me with so many of you. I did not write my story with any thought of its effect or its long-term value but instead did it for me and my attempt and need to heal myself. If you have ever considered sharing your story, I want to encourage you to do just that. You will know where to start once you have given yourself permission to do so. Trust the process, take the plunge, be open to what it stirs up in you for I promise you that you will learn a great deal about yourself, and achieve a new level of self-awareness which will allow healing to follow. I thank you for following me on my journey and although I know that I may be older than some of you, I also know that we are all on the same path. We veer, we traverse, we slide, we wax and wane, but we eventually find our way back to the light and become better versions of ourselves. I have a lot of faith in all of you and only want the best for you. So, don’t be afraid to tell your story. It’s made you who you are today. All my mistakes have become invaluable lessons, and I can honestly say that had they not happened, I would not be this version of myself today. XOXO, Jill, Your forever-learning, Dancing Queen

TRANSCENDANCE OUR NUMBERS COUNT BY JACQUELYN JAMES

As of my last update in December 2023, there isn’t a precise count of the transgender population in the United States due to various factors, including underreporting and the complexity of gender identity. Estimates from organizations such as the Williams Institute at UCLA suggest that around 2.4 million adults in the US identify as transgender. However, it’s important to note that these numbers are estimates and may not fully capture the diversity of gender identities. In most estimates the transgender population is double of any hard count. For the most current and accurate information, I recommend consulting the latest reports or study from reputable sources. As of today, there are many who hide in the shadows, in their homes or don’t leave the hotel room. Due to the massive campaign to delete the transgender community, people are afraid to be their authentic and true self. For some it is like living in a trapped world and not ever knowing what it is like to live a happy and authentic life. We walk on the edge of society daily, never really knowing what is around the next corner. Most individuals who come out as transgender will do so and choose to live in areas where there are clusters of the trans community. It feels safe and accepting. Then there are those who cannot live within a community of like-minded individuals and must track on their own. Transgender individuals may undergo different surgical procedures as part of their transition. For male to female (MTF) transition, surgeries could include breast augmentation, facial feminization, and genital reassignment surgery (vaginoplasty). Female to male (FTM) transition surgeries might involve chest

reconstruction (top surgery) and genital reassignment surgery (phalloplasty or metoidioplasty). The specific steps and surgeries vary for each individual and are often personalized based on their needs and goals. Keep in mind that not all transgender individuals choose to undergo surgery as part of their transition. This does not make them any less or more of the transgender community. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can have various effects on the brain for transgender individuals. Estrogen, for example, can lead to changes in mood, emotion regulation, and cognitive function. Testosterone can also have effects on mood, cognition, and behavior. These hormonal shifts can impact mental health, including alleviating gender dysphoria for some individuals. However, it’s important to note that the effects can vary from person to person, and it’s crucial for individuals to work closely with healthcare professionals throughout the process. Living as a transgender person in today’s world can vary greatly depending on location, societal attitudes, and individual experiences. In some places, there’s increasing acceptance and legal protections, while in others, discrimination and lack of understanding persist. Many transgender individuals face challenges related to healthcare, employment, and social acceptance. Supportive communities, increased awareness, and advocacy have helped to improve conditions for many, but there is still progress to be made in achieving full equality and understanding.

FITNESS HOW TO GET STRONGER THROUGH NUTRITION AND EXERCISE BY BRYAN MALDONADO

Strength is an important aspect of overall wellness, but many people can have a difficult time making it an integral part of their fitness routine. In fact, according to a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, six in 10 American adults don’t do any muscle-strengthening activities on a regular basis. Strength training or building lean muscle is important to protect your health long term. Increasing lean muscle mass can also help to reduce the risk of injury to ligaments and tendons, and can also improve your posture, through core strength and back muscles. If you’re curious about starting strength training or want to make bigger strides with your current workout efforts, there are certain steps you can take to help you reach your goals. What can you do to position yourself for success? Registered Dietitian, Michelle Ricker, RDN, CPT-ACSM, CPT-NASM, and director of Worldwide Health Education and Training at Herbalife, shares her expert insight. GO BIGGER FOR FEWER REPS When you’re training for endurance, the goal is to go as long as you can in whatever activity you’re doing. Strength training is different. You want to challenge your body with weight and focus on targeted reps that have a specific impact.

“If you are looking to build strength, instead of endurance, your workouts should be focused on lifting heavier weights and keeping the reps between 6-12,” said Ricker. “By increasing the weight and lowering the reps, you will be able to increase strength over time.” You want to choose a weight that you can lift comfortably, while still being challenged. Ricker said the goal is to work the muscles to a perceived exhaustion, which helps build lean muscle mass and therefore strength. PREP AND USE PROPER FORM One essential part of strength training is making sure you’re doing it the right way. Proper form matters to ensure you’re exercising muscles correctly to encourage growth and make gains. Proper form also matters because it helps prevent injury. If you’re not sure you’re doing resistance training or strength exercises correctly, consider taking a class or hiring a trainer to help. There are also many fitness communities you can join to get peer support. Incorporating Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s) 15 minutes prior to lifting weights or during your strength training, can also help improve lean muscle mass. BCAA is a general term for the essential

amino acids valine, leucine, and isoleucine that are metabolized by the body and used as sources of muscle energy. They have been shown to aid in muscle growth and ease muscle soreness. MAKE DIET MATTER It’s important to fuel your muscles with proper nutrition when focusing on strength. You may need to increase calorie intake and/ or focus on getting in those critical macronutrients (protein and carbohydrates specifically) both pre- and post-workout. Muscle protein synthesis can only occur with the appropriate amino acids and carbs to bring the protein into the muscles, said Ricker. “The biggest thing I see that people do wrong when trying to build strength is boosting protein too high and not incorporating carbs,” she said. “People are still afraid of carbs, because they’ve been trained to think they lead to extra weight gain, but the truth is that carbohydrates are a very important fuel for an athlete. They supply energy, while protein facilitates muscle building and recovery, which is why eating a carbohydrate food paired with protein can maximize lean muscle strength and size.” TAKE SUPPLEMENTS TO POWER YOUR WORKOUTS “To build body muscle, we need to apply stress to our muscles through progressive resistance or strength training. This process requires energy, and creatine supplies a primary source of energy for this process. Therefore, ensuring we are consuming an adequate amount of creatine is essential if we want to see progress in our strength,” Ricker said.

To get adequate creatine and amino acids through the diet, she also suggests consuming red meat, an excellent source of creatine, protein, vitamins and minerals, to your strength-building meal plan. Eating pumpkin seeds, nuts, sesame seeds and cooked quinoa, which help our bodies produce more creatine naturally for those who follow a plant-based diet. To simplify the process of getting high-quality creatine, many people opt to use a supplement, which contains 2mg of creatine per serving. It’s an easy way to boost your pre-workout routine and helps boost your performance by providing 100mg caffeine for energy, mental focus, and performance, as well as nutrients to support movement and blood flow. PLAN REST DAYS Resting your muscles is an essential part of a good strength training program. A good strategy is to rotate muscle groups on different days so different sessions are focused on certain parts of the body, providing a ‘rest day’ for those muscle groups worked. For example, Monday you work your legs. Tuesdays you work your arms and shoulders. Wednesday you work your back and core. This rotation helps work muscles consistently but also provides adequate time for rest, recovery and muscle growth. From a nutrition standpoint, having a post-workout protein shake with high quality protein and the correct protein to carb ratio, will also help repair and support muscle growth. Strong muscles are important at every age. If you are interested in increasing your strength through exercise and proper nutrition, these steps can help you make progress you can feel proud of.
