READING THE QUEENS PSYCHIC MEDIUM ROY TOMKO SERVES PSYCHIC HEALING

The world first got to know psychic medium Roy Tomko from his popular YouTube series, Reading the Queen and Reading the King. Fans of spirit channeling found his candid banter with drag queens and gay male models to be refreshing and fun. They enjoyed the anything goes mentality to the proceedings and that inevitable OMG moment when the celebrity begins to realize that the reading is, in fact, legit.

According to Tomko, blending the spirit world and the LGBTQ+ community has proved a match made in heaven. “It’s a chance for me to provide healing to the community I love and am a proud member of and to show the world how beneath a drag queen’s makeup and sequence or a gay king’s muscles and spray tan, they are individuals like everyone else, seeking healing and messages from loved ones.”

We spoke with Roy Tomko to learn more.

Do you see dead people?

Roy Tomko: (Laughing) Spirit has always been part of my life, for as long as I can remember. I started seeing Spirit at around three or four years old and into my teen years. Since then, Spirit has changed how it shows itself to me.

How so?

RT: Today, I’m claircognizant. Spirit appears to me more as a ‘clear knowing’. It is a psychic ability that involves knowing information that I couldn’t possibly know normally. You can imagine it as knowledge pouring into the top of my head.

We often hear that mediums have spirit guides.

RT: That is true, actually we all have spirit guides.

Who is your guide?

RT: I have a few. I have one that I count on a lot who is my main, and then I have a good amount more who step in for additional help when needed. I find spirit guides to be very personal. They are like family.

Is Spirit’s goal to remain with their loved ones throughout the person’s earthly life or are they only here for a short time while they are working to ascend to another realm?

RT: In my communications with Spirit, I have found that they are around us whenever we need them. They may step away for some moments, but they make themselves known again during times we call upon them or when we are going through something challenging in

our lives. Spirit knows when to step in and when to step away.

In recent readings, you have said that for most people, 2024 will be a year of abundance.

RT: 2024 has been marked spiritually by the number 8. The sum of all of the numbers in 2024 add up to 8. The number 8 angel signifies material wealth, financial abundance, and infinite energy. Spiritually, it means that our future goals, whatever they may be, are well within reach. You may be experiencing this already, but if it hasn’t happened for you yet, prepare for a beautiful year of abundance in all areas of your life as we move through the year.

Is there anything we can do to ensure that we receive all that the universe has to offer in 2024?

RT: Absolutely! I encourage everyone to set your intentions, do your affirmations, and create your manifestations. Continue to release what doesn’t serve you so you can receive and be open to what does.

Can we learn to hear spirit on our own, without the help of medium?

RT: Mediums have the ability to raise our vibrations to the energy level of spirit, which allows us to see signs and engage in a clearer communication between both worlds. However, I do believe everyone is shown signs and that as long as one has an open mind and open heart, we can all see, hear, smell, and feel our loved ones around us.

What are signs we should look out for?

RT: Some signs that loved ones are around are, butterflies, birds, coins, dollar bills, a feather, or even a specific scent of a flower or cigar. Signs are unique and individual to each person and their loved ones.

How can we know if spirit approves of the person we are dating?

RT: For validation on specific questions, I advise my clients to give Spirit a sign that you feel connected to. For example, an eagle. Ask your guides to show you an eagle - whether on TV or in a magazine or flying above - within a set time frame. If you see the sign, then you know your answer. However, keep in mind that, at the end of the day, you must do what is best for you and serves your highest and greatest good. That means following your own intuition.

What is one thing you wish people understood about psychic mediums?

RT: The biggest fallacy is that we are constantly communicating with dead people and reading everyone around us. Personally, I set strong boundaries with Spirit. I open my mind to Spirit when I need to connect and communicate. I close to Spirit when I need time to do me and live my own life. People don’t understand the amount of energy that goes into reading and communicating with Spirit. It can be exhausting.

Can you read yourself?

RT: I cannot read myself! I wish I could! Luckily, I have a gifted friend who I trust and can go to in times when I need guidance. But typically, I rely on the two things I encourage my clients to always lean on: my good sense and intuition.

FEATURE DO YOU BELIEVE?

You might be inclined to believe that psychics tell the truth. First, they often seem to know uncanny and accurate information about the people in their audiences—for example, that someone has a spouse who died of heart disease. Second, the people who get information from psychics seem to feel better as a result—for example, when they are told that a missing child is still alive. Third, the psychics appear on national television with famous hosts who have some credibility.

Psychics use two main methods to appear to be accurate and informative about people’s problems.

The most common is cold reading, which is throwing up big questions designed to elicit information—for example, by asking whether anyone in a large audience has a husband named John who had a heart attack. People are eager to be informed about their loved ones and find solace, so they quickly pick up on tiny pieces of information achieved only by fake questions and statements.

The other method commonly used by psychics is hot reading, which means getting information in advance about people they know

they will meet, through sources such as Facebook. Deceptions through cold and hot calling explain why psychics seem to be accurate and insightful.

When people are thrilled to get information about loved ones from psychics, they are often succumbing to the kind of mental error that psychologists call motivated reasoning. People are inclined to accept beliefs based on personal goals—what they want to believe—rather than on reliable evidence.

THE BELIEVERS

A recent report may help to shed some light on why people continue to believe in psychic powers. The study tested believers and sceptics with the same level of education and academic performance and found that people who believe in psychic powers think less analytically. This means that they tend to interpret the world from a subjective personal perspective and fail to consider information critically.

16 THESTANDARDPS.COM

VAGUE AND GENERAL

Psychic claims are often general and vague – such as foretelling a plane crash or celebrity death – and this is in part why so many people believe in the possibility of psychic abilities.

This is known as The Barnum effect, a common psychological phenomenon whereby people tend to accept vague, general personality descriptions as uniquely applicable to themselves. Research for example, has shown that individuals give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, that are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. The name references the circus man Phineas Taylor Barnum, who had a reputation as a master psychological manipulator.

IMPOSSIBLE TO VALIDATE

Many psychic claims have also proved impossible to confirm. A classic illustration is Uri Geller’s contention that he “willed” the soccer ball to move during a penalty kick at EuroCup 96. The ball movement occurred spontaneously in an uncontrolled environment and Geller made the claim retrospectively.

When professed abilities are subject to scientific scrutiny researchers generally discredit them. This was true of Derek Ogilvie in the 2007 TV documentary The Million Dollar Mind Reader. Investigation concluded Ogilvie genuinely believed he possessed powers but was not actually able to read babies’ minds.

MARCH 2024 17

MIXED EVIDENCE

Another factor that facilitates belief in psychic ability is the existence of scientific research that provides positive findings. This reinforces believers’ views that claims are genuine and phenomenon real but ignores that fact that published studies are often criticized, and replication is necessary for general acceptance to occur.

One prominent example of this was a paper produced by social psychologist Daryl Bem in the high-quality Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. It was said the research showed support for the existence of precognition (conscious cognitive awareness) and premonition (affective apprehension) of a future event. But other researchers failed to reproduce these results.

Motivated reasoning is not just wishful thinking; it involves a more subtle process of recruiting information from memory and other sources in ways that support what one wants to hear. Grief from the loss of a loved one is a horrible experience, so is not surprising that people will be highly motivated to get information that will make them feel better. So, the fact that people think that psychics make them feel better is no evidence concerning the truth of what the psychics say, because it reflects motivated inference rather than more reliable reasoning.

Who wouldn’t want psychic powers? From moving objects with your mind and reading people’s thoughts to even taking flight, psychic abilities have long fascinated human beings.

FAKE IT TO MAKE IT: THE POWER PARADOX

Psychic powers don’t just offer a new way to interact with the world around you; if you’re smart and savvy, they make it possible to move massive amounts of money from other people’s pockets into your own. Just ask Uri Geller, who spent decades convincing people he could bend spoons with his mind — and happily taking their money to watch him do it.

Or look at supposed psychics, such as the infamous Miss Cleo, who claimed to be a Jamaican shaman and advised viewers to, “Call me, now.” Not only were calls answered by actors rather than mindreaders, but customers were also charged significant amounts of money for calls that were advertised as free. In 2002, the company responsible for the service was charged by the Federal Trade Commission.

In some cases, it’s our own bias that leads us to believe in extraordinary abilities, and this is especially true when it comes to psychics. It works like this: A psychic says something vague enough to apply to a client’s life and circumstance. The more the psychic

FEATURE

talks, the more accurate they seem to be, and clients come to believe they have special knowledge. This is the Forer Effect, also called the Barnum Effect. As human beings, we naturally see the world through the lens of our own experience. When supposed psychics offer generalized descriptions of personality traits or human experiences, we often believe they apply specifically to us.

Psychic projects, like MKUltra and Star Gate, both involved giving participants — sometimes without their knowledge or consent — doses of LSD to see what would happen. In the case of MKUltra, the goal was to develop mind-control techniques. For Star Gate, psychic powers were the priority. Both efforts came to naught, however, and as noted by Science Focus, the project records have been destroyed.

Put simply, people want powers. Whether to generate cash flow, supposedly help people or gain a tactical advantage, there’s always interest in expanding our mental roadmap.

Worth remembering, however, are the words of Carl Sagan: “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” While oneoff studies may show some indication that mental magic is real, the lack of research repeatability suggests that either we’re not capable of measuring the right data — or the data doesn’t exist.

Ultimately, the human fascination with psychic powers isn’t going anywhere. From TV shows and movies that depict superpowered people to entrepreneurs who use their “powers” to move money from people’s wallets into their pockets, we’re endlessly fascinated with what our brains may hold beneath the surface.

INDESIGN PRE-LOVED IN PALM SPRINGS

Preloved items, or known simply as resale, has been a part of the Palm Springs home experience for decades. I really cannot think of another city with as many resale shops per capita then in the Coachella Valley. As with other resort towns, many, if not most, homes are sold furnished. Many of those items end up in resale shops as the new owners create their own design. Because of that, we have a plethora of well stocked emporiums for treasure hunters.

In some cases, a few of the shops even sell new merchandise mixed in with the resale items. What is interesting to me as a designer is that the mix can create a visual merchandising moment that is most like the experience of an actual home. By mixing in those new purchases with found items (known as preloved in the resale biz), you create a truer sense of personal style. Many times, in these pages I have waxed poetic about, “telling your story through your choices”, our resale stores are actually showing us how.

The first question is always the same, “where do I start?” Well, when it comes to utilizing resale stores to invigorate your own style, I can offer some tips to make your next adventure with preloved home items more fruitful.

• My first piece of advice is to always stay open to the possibilities. It is rarely triumphant when you go out in search of, that one single piece.

• Resellers in particular sell a wide variety of styles and merchandise. Take advantage of the opportunity to experience the variety of styles all in one place. Imagine the possibilities.

• Unlike traditional retail stores, you can find new merchandise on a daily basis in our local resale stores. If you are unsuccessful in today’s search, tomorrow is a whole new day.

• The resale store can also sell the items for you that you wish to change out so, you can offset your new purchases by shedding the old in the same location.

If you are looking for a resale opportunity, that carries both new and preloved merchandise, there is no better place than Revivals. With 4 locations throughout the Valley, the Palm Springs store can truthfully be called the most visited and shopped home store we have to offer. This is not only an amazing resale store, with an entire section of new home furnishings but, where all net proceeds go to

DAP Health. You can find preloved and new treasures for you and home and do good at the same time.

The reason I mention Revivals is because, there happens to be an incredible opportunity for you see, experience and buy Dann Foley Lifestyle products in the Dann Foley Lifestyle x Revivals Pop-Up store. The shop will open for 60 days starting on Saturday, February 24th, so you still have plenty of time. As a designer it is thrilling to be able to showcase our firms signature style. In our new Pop-Up shop we get to create living breathing vignettes that speak the essence of “mixing it up”.

We discuss with our clients the importance of personalizing their homes. We encourage free thinking and living with the things that you love. I will sometimes remind clients that a design style is not a blueprint, it is a thought, a style that should be integrated with your life, not copied verbatim. True style is not a theme. Themes are for children’s birthday parties. At the risk of using a much-overused term, “authentic living” is not caring what is en-vogue or the latest trend, it is truly about making yourself happy. Only you, without care or deference to others. This does not mean that nothing matters, because it does matter. A home is supposed to make you happy, make you feel safe, enthralled, relaxed, nostalgic, proud…and all those other buzz words that simply put, means telling your story, on your terms. You can admire and incorporate the latest colors, shapes, fabrics and other things of the moment but, at its core your home is your castle, your oasis. Here are some examples to help you make those (sometimes tough) decisions.

• Buying and living with the things that you love takes more effort than the easy convenient choice. But the rewards are unmeasurable.

• When searching for anything for your home, the first and last question should always be, “does this make me happy”.

• Resale stores are a great source of both the here and now of style and the past. Every home can be enlivened with preloved items of any style or era. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

• Always be selective. Remember this is about you and your home.

• Editing is both an action and a way of curating one’s collections, rooms, and home.

• When buying something preloved, know that you can alter

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

an item to suit you. Go ahead and change that color, the shape of the shade, the fabric on the chair, paint that frame, add hand detailing. Just because it is vintage or antique does not make it sacrosanct. Interfering with given styling may be exactly what you need, and what makes you the happiest.

I want you to think for yourself. I don’t want your family and friends to walk into your home and say, “oh yes, I’ve seen that” or “my friend has the same one”. The very best compliment I can receive as someone’s designer, after the unveiling, is for friends of the client to say, “oh my, this is so YOU”. Believe me they will get around to asking, who is your decorator?

Live Well!

Q&A UP IN STYLE

Today, Bruno Duarte has found love again with Alex and the two are exploring a new venture together as fashion models. They are featured in the spring campaign for ES Collection USA.

Bruno Duarte rose to fame as a breakout star on the Bravo reality TV show Be-low Deck. He starred on the series as a deck hand, winning the hearts of view-ers for his gorgeous looks and compelling life story.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Duarte suffered a traumatic childhood marked by an abusive father and the loss of his twin brother. Determined to find his way in life, Duarte found work as a waiter in luxury hotels and restaurants. He then took his passion for hospitality to the sea, working first on cruises, then jumping ship into yachting.

By the time Below Deck came calling, life was smooth sailing for Duarte, profes-sionally and personally. However, the winds of change would come blowing in with Duarte exiting the show and ending his relationship with his fiancé.

How did you meet?

Bruno: I was living in Cannes with my then fiancé and we decided to visit Nice and go to the gay bars. Alex happened to be a bartender at one of the bars and we started to talk.

Was it love at first sight?

Bruno: I had a wave of feelings that I had never felt before. My ex and I were in a seven-year relationship, and thought it might be nice to have an experience with a third. But after meeting Alex, I wanted him for me, period. I couldn’t see him with my ex. Our first four weeks together, we couldn’t let each other go.

Alex, what do you love most about Bruno?

Alex: His generosity, his determination, his smile, the way he takes care of me. He is a golden man and that’s why I married him!

I don’t believe we have spent a day apart since the first day we met.

What do you love most about Alex?

Bruno: Alex is kind, his love is intense and the feeling that I have when he looks into my eyes is unique.

What is a typical day in the life of Alex and Bruno like?

Bruno: I left my job in the yachting industry to be present in our relationship and since then we’ve been traveling and living our dreams.

How did you each find your way into modeling athleticwear?

Alex: All of the modelling work has been driven by our social media. The team at ESCollectionUSA invited us to collaborate on their latest campaign.

Who is the biggest ham in front of the camera?

Alex: (Laughing) Bruno!

Bruno: Alex hates being in the spotlight. It isn’t easy for him. I go with the flow, and I always have so much fun working with him.

Alex, can you tell us about your tattoos? Do they hold a particular meaning for you?

Alex: They all hold special meaning to me; most having to do with my family and my grandparents.

Bruno, you have a few tats too...

Bruno: I have two small tattoos. I did the first one when Alex and I were in Lis-bon together. The other was done in France. Neither has significant meaning but I plan to soon add a big tattoo on my arm to represent a childhood trauma that I experienced.

How do you each maintain your physiques?

Alex: A lot of gym, cross fit, diet, and struggles.

Bruno: (Laughing) Alex is more sensitive when it comes to food temptation!

What’s your advice to couples on how to keep their love strong this spring?

Alex: Our strong foundation is built on communication. Also, accepting that there will be bad moments but it is important to never give up.

Bruno: If you love someone, you can’t run away just because things are bad. The real love is when you stay and face the problems, and work together to overcome them.

What’s next for you both?

Alex: We want to build our own business. We have some ideas that we are cooking.

Bruno: I’m also trying to get back into some adventure reality show. Likely not Below Deck. I think that show is over for me.

All gear is available now at ESCollectionUSA.com.

QWEEN!’S JONNY McGOVERN IS GAY AF IN HIS

BRAND-NEW TV AND PODCAST SHOWS

Jonny McGovern is once again proving his status as the OG Gay Pimp in two new programs: Hey Qween!, his talk show streaming new episodes now, exclusively on World of Wonder’s SVOD platform WOW Presents Plus and Jonny McGovern is GAY AF, his irreverent weekly podcast show, available on Spotify, Apple and all podcast platforms.

In each Monday’s episode of Hey Qween!, Jonny sits down with the eliminated queen from the previous episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16 for their first TV interview. “Working with World of Wonder gives us access like never before,” Jonny McGovern explains. “The queens go from the main stage to my stage, and the T is piping hot!”

“It’s been a long road to get here but I’m so thrilled to have Hey Qween! back on TV and officially part of the mothership of WOW

Presents Plus,” McGovern continues. “It’s bittersweet that my angel, Lady Red, is not here to be a part of it, but I know she is with us and smiling down.”

The late Lady Red Couture was Jonny’s best friend and longtime sidekick on Hey Qween! from the show’s inception on YouTube in 2014. Drag queen Kevin Aviance is taking on Lady Red’s classic opening for the new season. Says McGovern, “Kevin was the diva who sparked my love for the art of drag in my early NYC club days and he and Lady Red loved each other so he was the only person I could imagine filling in for her.”

For fans craving even more dirty gay fun, Jonny McGovern is serving new weekly episodes of his podcast show, Jonny McGovern is GAY AF. It celebrates all things of homosexual interest and features Jonny’s totally queer take on pop culture, the hottest tabloid tales and

internet thirst traps. “I missed having a place to speak directly with my fans about the gayest topics,” he explains. Jonny McGovern was one of the first gay podcasters with Gay Pimpin with Jonny McGovern, a show that ran for over ten years.

“In Jonny McGovern is GAY AF, I’m taking deep dives into stories that might make other podcasts blush. Who else is going to uncover which drag queens have Only Fans accounts and whether or not preacher TD Jakes is a power bottom? Only me, Jonny McGovern, because I am and have always been, gay AF.”

Jonny McGovern’s career in nightlife entertainment began twenty years ago with Dirty Gay Hits, his collection of hilarious gay themed songs that received over five million downloads before YouTube even existed and was added to rotation on MTV. It led to Jonny appearing all over the airwaves: on The Ricki Lake Show, VH1’s Best Week Ever,

Comedy Central’s Out on the Edge, and eventually catching the eye of Rosie O’Donnell, who cast him as a lead player on her LOGOTV comedy show, The Big Gay Sketch Show alongside Oscar nominee Coleman Domingo and SNL’s Kate McKinnon.

He spent the last seven years touring the world with burlesque legend Dita Von Teese as her emcee, performing for celebrity studded audiences - including Harry Styles, Prince Albert of Monaco and Jean Paul Gautier - in some of the world’s most glamorous venues. In 2022, Jonny McGovern became a TikTok sensation with his song, “Man Areas.” It received over 21 million streams on Spotify and appeared in TikTok videos viewed over twenty million times. Inspired by this huge new musical success, Jonny has recorded a new album of Dirty Gay Hits to be released this summer.

Today, Jonny McGovern is best known for his popular television

shows including Look at Huh on Netflix and GoGo for the Gold (second season streaming now on OUTtv).

BOOK REVIEW ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

Do you really need three pairs of shoes?

The answer is probably yes: you can’t dance in hikers, you can’t shop in stilettos, you can’t hike in clogs. So, what else do you overpack on this long-awaited trip? Extra shorts, extra tees, you can’t have enough things to wear. And in the new book “How to Live Free in a Dangerous World” by Shayla Lawson, you’ll need to bring your curiosity.

Minneapolis has always been one of their favorite cities, perhaps because Shayla Lawson was at one of Prince’s first concerts. They weren’t born yet; they were there in their mother’s womb, and it was the first of many concerts.

In all their travels, Lawson has noticed that “being a Black American” has its benefits. People in other countries seem to hold Black Americans in higher esteem than do people in America. Still, there’s racism – for instance, their husband’s family celebrates Christmas in blackface.

Yes, Lawson was married to a Dutch man they met in Harlem. “Not Haarlem,” Lawson is quick to point out, and after the wedding, they became a housewife, learned the language of their husband, and fell in love with his grandmother. Alas, he cheated on them, and the marriage didn’t last. He gave them a dog, which loved them more than the man ever did.

They’ve been to Spain and saw a tagline in which a dark-skinned Earth Mother was created. Said Lawson, “I find it ironic, to be ordained a deity when it’s been a... journey to be treated like a person.”

They’ve fallen in love with “middle-American drag: it’s the glitteriest because our mothers are the prettiest.” They changed their pronouns after a struggle “to define my identity,” pointing out that in many languages, pronouns are “genderless.” They looked upon Frieda Kahlo in Mexico and thought about their own disability. And they wish you a good trip, wherever you’re going.

“No matter where you are,” says Lawson, “may you always be certain who you are. And when you are, get everything you deserve.”

Crack open the front cover of “How to Live Free in a Dangerous World” and you might wonder what the heck you just got yourself into. The first chapter is artsy, painted with watercolors, and difficult to peg. Stick around, though. It gets better.

Past that opening, author Shayna Lawson takes readers on a notso-little trip, both world-wide and with observant eyes – although it seems, at times, that the former is secondary to that which Lawson sees. Readers won’t mind that so much; the observations on race, beauty,

love, the attitudes of others toward America, and finding one’s best life are really what takes the wheel in this memoir anyhow. Reading this book, therefore, is not so much a vacation as it is a journey of discovery and joy.

Just be willing to keep reading, that’s all you need to know to get the most out of this book. Stick around and “How to Live Free in a Dangerous World” is what to pack.

NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH MARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

“Colon cancer is the battle we can win with early detection and regular screening.”

DAP Health’s Associate Chief Medical Director Dr. Silas Gyimah is fond of that inspiring citation of unknown derivation. As the founder of the Palm Springs-based, queer-led nonprofit Cheeky Charity — whose mission is to facilitate colorectal and anal cancer prevention, early detection, and support, with a focus on the young and LGBTQ+ populations — so am I.

“We are heavily focused on screening all qualified patients at each and every encounter at our multiple sites regardless of the purpose of the visit,” Gyimah continues, referring to DAP Health. “We focus on utilizing FIT [fecal immunochemical test] and colonoscopies as our primary modes of screenings. This is a true implementation of the quote above.”

Let’s delve more deeply into this largely preventable and curable disease.

Here’s the 101 to keep yourself and those you love safe.

Colorectal Health: Understanding and Prevention

Colorectal cancer (CRC), once predominantly a concern for older adults, is now increasingly affecting younger individuals. This shift necessitates a renewed focus. Understanding the nuances of colorectal health is vital for individuals of all ages.

Understanding Colorectal Cancer

CRC originates in the colon or rectum, part of the digestive system. It usually begins as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps can become colon cancers.

Symptoms To Be Aware Of

CRC might not cause symptoms right away, but if they occur, they may include changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, persistent abdominal discomfort, a feeling that the bowel doesn’t empty completely, weakness or fatigue, and unexplained

weight loss. It’s important to consult a health care provider if any of these symptoms are experienced.

Risk Factors

Certain factors increase the risk of developing CRC. These include older age, a personal or family history of CRC or colorectal polyps, inflammatory intestinal conditions, a low-fiber/high-fat diet, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and alcohol use. Genetics also play a role, with some inherited genes increasing the risk.

Prevention Strategies

Prevention of CRC starts with lifestyle changes. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — and low in red and processed meats — can reduce risk. Regular physical activity is crucial. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking, and moderating alcohol consumption are also recommended.

The Importance of Screening

Screening for CRC is one of the most powerful weapons for preventing the disease. It’s generally recommended to begin screening at age 45. Screening can find precancerous polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. For people at higher risk, such as those with a family history, screening may be recommended earlier.

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Navigating the Rising Trend in Young Adults

The rising incidence of CRC among young adults is a complex issue that involves a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. It’s important for young adults to:

• Be aware of their family history.

• Minimize known risks.

• Incorporate healthy preventative habits into their lifestyle.

• Regularly check for symptoms.

• Discuss screenings with their health care providers if they have risk factors.

Conclusion

As our understanding of colorectal health evolves, it becomes clear that CRC is not just a concern for the elderly. The increase in cases among younger adults emphasizes the importance of awareness and proactive health measures across all age groups. Through lifestyle modifications, regular screening, and early detection, the impact of CRC can be significantly reduced.

WELLNESS NOT SLEEPING WELL? YOU’RE NOT ALONE

It’s hard to read any advice on achieving a happy life without seeing a mention of your recommended seven to nine hours of restful sleep alongside staying active and eating well. From boosting concentration and reducing stress to increasing energy and strengthening our immune systems—not to mention better weight management and brighter eyes and skin—many of life’s problems can be overcome by catching some Zs. Easier said than done, right?

So, while I’d love to tell you that getting a good night’s sleep isn’t necessary or that the benefits are just a myth, I sadly can’t. Here are a few tips that might help you get a better night’s sleep.

Stretch Out

Conquering a tough workout in the morning will get your body more ready for sleep, when it recovers best, later but a few simple stretches before bed could help too, no matter how active you’ve been throughout the day. Yoga poses, foam rolling, and stretching release tension. After as little as five minutes, the combination of movement and breath can help your body relax and drift off sooner.

Eat Right

A full stomach before bed might make you sleepy initially but, as your body attempts to digest the meal, it plays havoc with your

rest. Avoid big meals or snacks for an hour or two before bedtime, especially sugary ones that act as a stimulant. Other stimulants to avoid right before bed include caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. The latter might be surprising as its sedating effects often make you sleepy, but those wear off quickly, leaving you awake and dehydrated after just a few hours. If your hunger gets the best of you late at night, nuts, bananas, herbal teas, and comforting broths like miso are good choices. Stay hydrated throughout the day too, rather than taking on lots of water right before bed and needing a 3 am bathroom break.

Shut Down

It’s hard to resist the temptation of a late-night Instagram scroll or getting ahead with your emails, but countless studies have shown that the blue light from computers, phones, TVs, and other tech has a dramatic (negative) effect on the body’s production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. The in-built night modes can help if your screentime is unavoidable, but only a little. Put your phone down and close the laptop as early as you can before bed. Instead of falling asleep with the TV on, reading or listening to a podcast or audiobook can make a big difference. Simply having your phone near you puts your brain into a constant state of alert that, unsurprisingly, can disturb sleep.

32 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Find Calm

Guided meditation is a great way to clear your mind and relax your body, especially after a hectic day, keep your nightstand clear of textbooks, paperwork, and anything that distracts you. A notepad might help you transfer persistent thoughts or ideas onto paper so you can forget about them until morning, but always try to keep your sleep space clutter-free.

Cool Off

This part is especially crucial in the summer heat, when the temperature in our bedrooms creeps way beyond the ideal 6065°F (16-18°C). Our body temperature naturally drops when we fall asleep, and is at its coolest in deep sleep, so fighting against a balmy night is going to have a negative impact. Ditch the duvet and try lighter sheets or a summer-weight blanket in breathable, natural fabrics. Keeping your feet and hands uncovered can also help your body find its ideal temperature as the lack of hair and specialized vascular structures of our palms and the soles of our feet are perfectly designed to help the body get rid of unwanted heat.

Hopefully you will be getting that elusive shut eye in no time. ZZZ…

DESERT ENSEMBLE THEATRE PRESENTS ELLIE

Desert Ensemble Theater (DET), in residence at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, will present the world premiere production of ELLIE by Palm Springs playwright Bruce Bonafede, March 8–10 and 15–17, 2024: A play about crime, punishment, and how men kill the thing they love.

ELLIE centers on two older men—brothers—who are grieving the death of one of their wives. Their mourning sparks a confrontation that lays bare their life-long love/hate relationship and leads to shocking actions that change their lives forever.

Performances are part of DET’s 13th Season “Off-Center at the Cultural Center.” Curtain times are 7:30 pm Friday, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm Saturday, and 2:00 pm Sunday. Tickets are $37.50 and are available at www.desertensembletheatre.org. For more information, call (760) 565-2476.

DET Artistic Director Jerome Elliott Moskowitz said: “ELLIE is our thirteenth world premiere since the company’s inception in 2011. As a community-based theatre, we are thrilled to bring another Desert-based playwright to the attention of our audience. Bruce Bonafede’s illustrious career spans more than 40 years, including a 1985 win of the Heideman Award for best one-act play at the Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival for New American Plays. Audiences are in for a suspenseful journey as they experience the many twists and turns of his latest work.”

Veteran actor, director and playwright Howard Shangraw makes his DET directing debut with ELLIE. He stated: “I am excited to direct Bruce Bonafede’s gripping new play for Desert Ensemble Theater. Bringing this savagely intimate pas de deux between two siblings is a thrilling adventure for me.”

Two of the Desert’s favorite actors assume the roles of dueling brothers Richard and Warren. Richard Marlow last season

appeared as Agent O’Hara in DET’s critically acclaimed premiere of Do Not Remove Label and is well known to audiences of Desert Theatreworks, Desert Rose Playhouse and the Palm Canyon Theatre. Abe Daniels, making his Palm Springs acting debut in the role of Warren, was a fixture at the iconic Groves Canyon Theatre in Morongo Theatre for more than a decade.

PERSPECTIVE COMPASSION

What is compassion?

One definition is this: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

I am sharing this because of something that happened to me the other day on Facebook. I had shared an article of an interview that was done on me to help those that might not have known me for a long time or the story of how I ended up in Palm Springs as I am fortunate enough to have people believe that I am someone that they see as inspirational. I will continue to say that if that is indeed true that it is a result of my being a channel of knowledge greater than myself.

But nonetheless, I was delighted with all the feedback. It was lovely so read so many positive remarks, comments and feedback. My heart was warmed as I felt that others saw me the same way I would like to be seen. But out of the blue, I received not only one message from what we now refer to as “haters,” but two of them.

It was very early on a Sunday morning that these nasty messages came my way, and I was truly shocked, perhaps showing my naïveté. My body’s reaction was instant, and I felt a rise in my blood pressure and a pang in my heart. I have always been a very sensitive person and feel things immediately.

After the shock wore off, I did something I typically would not do. I wrote about my distress at this person if he or she is actually real and posted about it.

Well, the fallout which came in the form of over 500 comments which I had not expected, looked for or imagined kind of blew me away. Please let me say that for each one of you who took the time to support me, my humblest thanks and appreciation. I always feel grateful and loved but even more so from all the support and love.

But here is what happened for me from responding to every person that sent a message most of whom wanted to harm the person or denigrate them. I found compassion for this person, a response I didn’t expect to have.

I concluded that I must offer love to someone who opts to attack

me without knowing anything about me, because truth be told I know nothing about them either. As a former psychiatric nurse, as well as a person who has been involved in years of both analysis and regular talking therapy, I have a huge heart from those who are empty inside, who suffer from low self-esteem and self-hatred because I know what that feels like.

The big difference is that I turned those feelings inwards and lived as a depressed person for over 55 years of my life. I also took the time, energy and my belief that people are good and not bad to do my own work on the inside and as a result have an inner glow that others are drawn to.

I could see from this person’s words that they were either too afraid to do the work to understand this need to be so judgmental and negative to me, someone he does not know. I chose to take the high road and not only wish the person well, but also to ask if anyone knew who this person was so that they could reach out to him as he was clearly lonely and empty and needed a friend.

I don’t know if anyone knew him for, he could be a troll, an AI account or any other entity that comes with online territory, but I want to thank “them,” for teaching me this invaluable lesson. I also hope it’s a lesson that sticks in the future and is one that I can put to practice daily.

Today my Compassion Bank is full, how’s yours?

XOXO,

Jill, Your sensitive-hearted, Dancing Queen

KOSSISKO

BRINGING A MESSAGE OF EMPOWERMENT

Grammy-nominated R&B/Hip-Hop artist Kossisko (they/them/theirs) released their empowering funk single “Rich Bi$h”, alongside a vibrant music video.

“I went out to Vegas to link with Rick James’s band, The Stone City Band and I played them an early version of ‘Rich Bi$h’ and they all flipped out over it,” Kossisko recalls, “The moment was hella surreal for me as a fan. It felt like the funk gods blessed it or something.”

Formerly known as 100s, Kossisko’s infectious pop track declares, “You better work” and emphasizes, “Money can’t buy love.” “The inspiration behind the song was basically I wanted to make something that would serve as a soundtrack to a moment when a person is at the height of feeling themselves,” said Kossisko. “To me being a ‘Rich Bi$h’ isn’t even about money, it’s more of just a state of mind where you feel empowered, sexy, confident, and wanna shake some ass.”

The Bay Area rapper invites a visual feast in captivating drag, showcasing a fearless and glamorous persona. Drenched in bold colors and energy, the clip is a celebration of self-expression and confidence. “Rich Bi$h” not only delivers a pop anthem that’s sure to get listeners moving but also serves as a statement of individuality and self-love, as Kossisko fearlessly embraces their identity and encourages others to do the same.

Born of African and Jewish blood, Kossisko was raised in the eclectic air of Berkeley, California. Conversely, when Kossisko was a teen their father sent him to live in the Ivory Coast where they spent two hard years bouncing around between boarding schools and family members. The diversity of these experiences contributed

greatly to the singer, songwriter and actor’s unique gifts.

Kossisko is an innovative musical artist, actor and composer in the intersection of film, music and fashion. The gender-fluid artist has appeared in HBO’s wildly successful Euphoria and portrayed themself in two seasons of Netflix’s Sex/Life plus various television licenses and video game features

such as Grand Theft Auto V and Marvel. Additionally, they have been featured in an iPhone 5C campaign and additionally shined as a sought-after model, working for Billionaire Boys Club, Mr. Saturday and Midnight Studios.

Stay tuned for more to come from Kossisko.

KAROL G & TIESTO CELEBRATE LOVE WITH THE RELEASE OF “CONTIGO”

After making history as the first female to win a Grammy for “Best Música Urbana Album” with “Mañana Será Bonito,” Karol G keeps the momentum going with her latest single, “Contigo.” The hypnotizing Pop and EDM fusion nods to the global recording artist’s pop roots highlighting a powerful message: everyone has the right to celebrate love in all its forms. “Contigo” is now available on all digital streaming platforms.

“Contigo” amplifies the success of Karol G’s Grammy-award-winning studio album “Mañana Será Bonito” and “Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season),” she reintroduces an iconic fan-favorite duo alongside global sensation Tiësto. The song features an interpolation of Leona Lewis’ iconic hit “Bleeding Love” with a pop-synth fusion set

to become an anthem. This track’s lyrics “no quiero vida si no es contigo” (I don’t want a life if it’s not with you), echoes the heartfelt sentiment that underscores the importance of celebrating love in all its forms.

Co-created by Karol G and Pedro Artola and produced by WeOwnTheCity, the story woven into “Contigo” is brought to life through a captivating music video starring Karol, Tiësto, and Young Miko. This video dives into a tender story of a couple with a pure and one-of-akind connection, creating an intimate world in which it seems as if they are the only people who exist, isolated from the world’s noise. They live and love intensely celebrating those feelings that cannot be controlled and that are so strong that they overcome all obstacles.

Karol G’s recent achievements stand as a testament to her unparalleled impact on the music industry. Following her recognition as Billboard’s Woman of the Year, Karol

is set to make 2024 another year about shattering the glass ceiling. Recently, she embarked on her Mañana Será Bonito Latam Tour, kicking off in Mexico City with an unprecedented feat: becoming the first female artist to sell out the Estadio Azteca for three consecutive nights, with a remarkable 80,000 attendees per night.

Karol’s remarkable ability to unite her loyal fanbase and transcend borders was demonstrated by their heartfelt gesture—a massive banner bearing the words “no quiero vida si no es contigo,” echoing the sentiment of her latest track. Karol G’s legacy as a pioneering force in the music industry continues to flourish, inspiring generations to come with her unwavering dedication and groundbreaking accomplishments.

TRANSCENDANCE GENDER DYSPHORIA

Gender Dysphoria is a complex phenomenon that impacts the mental health of individuals experiencing it. Individuals with this experience endure an overwhelming contrast between their true gender identity and their assigned sex at birth. Gender is a social construct that’s based on the standards set by society, while sex is a biological construct assigned based on genitalia at birth. That goes way beyond just feeling discomfort; it’s a psychological and emotional struggle of incomprehensible depth that can leave a notable impact on an individual’s mental wellbeing and quality of life.

What is Gender Dysphoria?

Gender dysphoria can be identified as the severe distress an individual goes through because of the discrepancy among their gender identity and the primary sex they were assigned or allocated at birth.

These emotional feelings can over time manifest in various ways, including social discomfort, discontent with one’s own body and severe emotional distress. In some cases, this can lead to self-harm or even suicide. It’s not just about going with a trend or exploring one’s identity. But more so, it’s about an individual’s unique struggle to find themselves from within, how they relate within society and the feeling of acceptance by others including family members, friends, co-workers, etc…

It is important to note that not all individuals who identify themselves as transgender go through gender dysphoria. Some individuals choose to start the process of the physical transitioning and orienting their bodily appearance with their chosen gender identity. Studies have proven that this can lessen the feeling of discomfort and uneasiness of being in a public setting. It also can help in diminishing gender dysphoria itself.

Is Gender Dysphoria a mental illness?

Gender dysphoria by itself is not a mental illness. However, it is a legitimate experience of individuals who are constantly enduring the struggles within their own gender identity, within a social construct designed by which usually abides by the traditional understanding and societal norms of what gender is.

Written in the DSMMD (The Diagnostic & Standard Manual of Mental Disorders, Gender Dysphoria was classified as Gender Identity Disorder. This term that was used in the past has now been corrected in the current edition of the DSMMD-5, to indicate a better understanding and more empathy towards the subject. The change in the terminology brings a greater distinction and pivots towards a better understanding. Individuals living as a transgender person are not suffering from a mental health disorder. While there may be individuals that have more underlying issues it should not be confused between the two. However, the mental discomfort brought

on by the difference between a person’s gender identity and the societal expectations can cause this distress to their assigned sex and exacerbate the mental issues.

Many mental health professionals are most likely to make a diagnosis for their patients if they are experiencing severe distress especially if it starts to interfere with their everyday life and the normal functioning in society. In many cases this can include stress on the family unit, professional careers, loss of longtime friends and the support from all these elements. This helps the individual dealing with gender dysphoria by obtaining clarity and removing the distress, stigma of the experiences of being a transgender individual.

Gender Dysphoria vs. Mental Health

Gender dysphoria on its own is not a psychological disorder. It can however have an adverse effect on a person’s mental well-being over time if not treated either through counseling or even exploring options with the medical health provider of possibly moving toward hormone treatments. Individuals faced with these kinds of conditions with the degree of distress and discomfort can create a whole range of emotional issues. Depression, Low self-esteem, anxiety, etc…

are just some of the symptoms and challenges that can occur. The rejection, discrimination and pressures to comply with the social norms can be exacerbated and cause great harm to the individual to be able to function in everyday life.

It is important that every individual experiencing these symptoms seek out good healthcare and counseling to include therapy. With the increased attention on this subject matter with the general public it is vitally important that we become more aware and gain a better understanding of the root cause of Gender Dysphoria.

Gender Dysphoria and mental health share a close relationship in various ways. Transgender individuals frequently experience a lot of bias and constant ridicule, as well as discrimination which leads to severe distress in the individual. The external factors brought on by public opinion and their lack of knowledge creates an environment of unpleasantness in one’s own life as they try to traverse life itself.

All societies progress with their own evolution. It is the collective responsibility to accept and welcome the diversity of each gender’s experiences and identities. Having empathy and showing kindness to all those when viewing an individual with gender dysphoria.
