Why Tourism? The future railway is expected to bring average 6000 flow of people monthly for Galashiels from 2015, and it is a great opportunity to utilize the town’s geographical advantages and develop sustainable tourism through wellbeing, to offer more working opportunities and achieve economic and social sustainability in the future. Why focus on wellbeing? Wellbeing should be fundamental aspect of sustainable development for a town like Galashiels. What will this project bring? For the town it is a chance to revive itself as central town in Borders region, and to become a tourism hub. For local residents it is a way to improve the quality of life. Tourism will bring economic growth, then more job opportunities, then more social benefits. At the same time, wellbeing consideration might bring a healthier future for residents.

A Transformational Process Stage 1: Current paths The current pathway are disordered and are often of poor amenity, especially in the riverside area. The distance between the two cross-river bridges is too long that inconveniences local residents and vistors. Stage 2: Build new bridge across river Stage 2 involves building a new bridge east of the textiles college and connecting with the main walking route into the town centre, At the same time, reorganise the north side paths, to connect better with local communities. Retain the existing main road to the town centre and the university.

Stage 3: Public transport path and new Pedestrian Route In stage 3, a new axis is now formed. It links both south and north sides of the hillside paths,which can then extend to the starting point to a network of upland trackes and walking routes. Stage 4: The new axis The new axis is developed in the area between the south and north upland walking routes, it is mainly pedestrian (some parts have motor vehicles can pass) which link the two mountain walking departure points. There will be differnet types of amentiy buildings along the axis, We choose to rehabilitate most of them, but also add a significant new development.

A New North-South Route The drawings show how such a new link might be realised. In particular it shows the importance of the new river crossing and how this axis breaks the conventional way in which the town can be explored. It is envisaged as a regeneration vehicle for a part of the town that is overlooked and has little visual amentiy or facilities.

A Reconstruction Process: Fom Factory to Exhibition Centre An existing warehouse building is selected for Adpative Re-use. The existing building footprint and column grid is retained. A new roof structre and cladding is added to reflect the new use of the building and also to provide a variety of different exhibition and support spaces

Building Microclimate Since the main wind direction in Galashiels is southeast both in summer and winter, evergreen trees are planted on the southern slope to mediate summer temperatures and protect the building from the cold wind in winter. Close to the building, deciduous trees are used. In summer in leaf, they will protect the building from sunlight. In winter they allow sunlight on the face of the building A courtyard is designed in the to encourage natural ventilation. In summer, trees will shade, hot air will flow from inside rooms to the middle yard them out of this building. In winter, low winter sun will make it a pleasant place even with lower temperatures.

Environmental Strategy Natural Ventilation: there are sufficient openings on the facade to make sure the much of the building can be ventilated simply especially in summer. Photovoltaic Panels: install solar panels on the roof facing south,transferring solar energy to electricity for the building to use. Daylighting: high levels of rooflighting Ground Source Heat Pump: using PV electricity providing hot water for underfloor heating
