The main objective of the Textile Centre project is to preserve and promote the Scottish textile heritage. The textile industry has been an important part of Galashiels since the 18th century. Also, the industry is relevant for the economy and social life for the habitants of Galashiels. The location proposed for The Textile Centre is situated in an Old Mill in the centre of Galashiels. The location was selected because the area oce featured weaving shops, and a diverse ecosystem of different manufacturers related to the textile industry.

Manifesto The Centre will be focused in different sectors. The concept is to show, develop and preserve the traditions of the textile industry in Galashiels. To Preserve: the Centre will encourage the community to reinforce textile traditions how this adds to the Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sense of identity. To Display: as a tourist attraction to visit interpret and learn about the history and processes of Galashielâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s textile tradition. To Develop To act as a catalyst to improve sectors of economy in tourism, design and manufacture.

Building Programme The Old Mill located at Bridge Street has much potential. The surrounding area has generous space to create a complex that could contain all the requirements of the proposed building programme. The Old Mill will be reused and restored, with new buildings infilling the courtyard to provide specialist functions and built to good sustainable construction principles. Proposal The concept is to show, develop and preserve the traditions of the textile industry in Galashiels. To preserve, the Centre will encourage the community to reinforce their traditions and sense of identity.

The building programme will include a library and archive to store in a temperature and humidity controlled space archival material about the town. At present much of this material is based in Hawick and the centre would allow closer proximity for archival material concerning the town. Attached to this would be workshop and research space. An interpretative museum would be for the general visitor with the intention of providing an additional tourism facility for the town to increase visitor numbers. Attached to this would be a shop and retail outlet.

Design Context The above illustration shows the massing of the heritage centre in the existing courtyard. The plan drawings show the floor plans with the building functions shown. An important aspect of the proposal is the way visitors and residents can circulate easily between Bridge Street and High Street using the newly opened up courtyard. This assists in making new routes and linkages in the town and critically opens up the town more to the riverside frontage.

Energy Proposition The energy proposition for the Textile Heritage Centre should be an integrate sustainable proposal, because the energy consumption in museums and galleries according to de ‘Collection Trust’ could be a 20% – 30% proportion of the total cost. Proposal • Water Neutrality • LED Lighting System • Double Glazing • Biomass Boiler • Improve insulation Each zone of the complex will have different environmental needs.

There are 5 environmental zones in the complex : • Museum • Library • Reading Area • Restaurant • Outdoor Area The colour indicates the maximum temperature in the different areas. For example the restaurant should be at a temperature of 18º. The archive has specific climate and humidity control requirements.

Environmental Proposition The energy proposition for the Textile Heritage Centre should be an integrated sustainable proposal, because the energy consumption in museums and galleries according to the ‘Collection Trust’ could be up to 30% of operational costs of a building. It proposed that this development features: • Water Neutrality • LED Lighting System • Double Glazing • Biomass Boiler • Improve insulation Each zone of the development will has different environmental needs. In some exhibition spaces temperature and humidity require to be maintained to precise limits Construction Proposition The aim of the project is to use low impact materials of low toxicity and embodied energy. This includes the use of locally sourced timber, sheeps wool insulation, and reclaimed materials for flooring and roofing.
